1971 has its first first. Vikki Carr's first Columbia

single is here. "I'll Be Home." It's a Randy Newman song that gives Vikki a chance to show what she can do.

And she does it so well, Bill Gavin has picked it. He called it

"a powerful performance...candidate to cross over the top 40 barrier."

We're pleased to have Vikki Carr as an exclusive Columbia artist.

And happy to be able to start the new year on such a good note.

Unnecessary Escalation On Price Of Deals

Most labels see in big money deals for artists major publicity value. After all, if a company is willing to put gobs of cash on the line for a new pactee then it must have considerable faith in the act's impact, hoping that in making public announcements of a general money deal, the trade thinks so, too. (Columbia Records, on the other hand, has made deals known on the basis that the act was offered more by another company, but took the deal with the label because it was felt Columbia had more important things to offer that, evidently, would eventually realize greater income).

We wonder if companies are doing more harm than good in making what are usually vague declarations of major money deals. Acts, of course, are entitled to negotiate any kind of financial arrangement they are cap- able of finalizing. But, what are these six or seven figure deals really like? Company announcements along these lines rarely specify the exact nature of these signings, such as the terms of payment and the fact that such a figure could be reached if an act comes through with hit product. Yet, there they are-big figures without detailed meaning that can do a lot to point the way to other acts in their

negotiations. More realistic figures in starting negotiations are thus hard to come by. "If such and such signed with this label for this amount-and we read this in the trades-we feel we deserve this kind of deal, too, reason the acts or their representa- tives.

As a trade paper that reports on and thus disseminates big money deals, we bear a certain responsibility in perpetuating this contractual "es- calation clause." While we can't expect that every detail of every major deal be made public, we feel that labels will make a strong contribution to their own well-being by spelling out signings in terms that show the com- pany has not gone mad in bringing an act into its stable. A major deal can still look good for a label and its pactee even if such matters as ad- vances against royalties or other con- tingent items are made public along with that big general figure.

But, the point that all labels (and others which may make producer - writer pacts) should be aware of is that by putting deals into proper pro- spective they can avoid an unneces- sary escalation of financial terms, es- pecially at a time when the industry can least afford it.

Woodstock was an event in American history. Matthews' Southern Comfort's "Woodstock" is an event in English history. Number 1 for six weeks there and now it's here.

Ian Matthews' Southern Comfort's members read like a Who's Who of English rock groups with musicians from "Fairport Convention," "Spooky Tooth" and "Marmalade."

When you hear them you'll understand why "Woodstock" was such a smash hit in England and now it's here. Matthews' Southern Comfort on Decca Records.

Fantasy Moves

To Berkeley HQ;

A/V Capability SAN FRANCISCO - Fantasy Rec- ords staff has moved into the nearly - completed new company headquar- ters, outfitted for TV and video cas- sette production, in Berkeley from its West Oakland building a few miles away.

The new building, two stories, 32,- 000 square feet, on a three acre city block, houses the first complete rec- ord company operation in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to Saul Zaentz, president. Building and land represents a $1,500,000 invest- ment.

Zaentz, one of the first to arrive in the new headquarters, moved into his office and began operating with a folding chair and desk made from two saw horses and a plank. Interior finishing touches are expected to be completed by the first of the year.

The company's newest acquisition, a latest model Neumann mastering lathe, has been set up and is in oper- ation. Zaentz pointed out it is the only mastering equipment in the San Francisco Bay Area and the only new model Neumann lather outside of

FRONT COVER:

MCA Records has come through with two major attractions in 1970, with expectations that their impact is going to continue. "Jesus Christ/Su- perstar" is Decca's contribution to the MCA family of labels, with an RIAA gold record just earned for the 2 -LP rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, creators and producers of the ambitious work. Uni Records is the outlet for the per- formances of England's Elton John, a major find this year. He's got a hit LP, "Elton John," and single, "Your Song." Coming soon is a second LP, "Tumbleweed Connection." John is shown in performance on the cover (left). Webber, who wrote "Super- star's" music, and Rice, book and lyr- ics, are also in the montage.

Softness, Simplicity To Key Sound Of Pop Music In 1971? NEW YORK-Shortly before Elec- tion Day, Jerry Ragovoy commented that newer groups working on mate- rial in his Hit Factory studios were showing an increasingly "conserva- tive" bent. Musically, he meant that the performers were cutting back on their volume, trimming down the use of distortion and lengthy instrumental breaks and tending to reduce the ap- plication of electronics. Their choice of material, he added, was also show- ing a movement away from the "ex- treme." And acts were becoming more involved in traditional, rather than radical forms and themes.

In large part, Ragovoy attributed the change to a growing boredom on the part of both performers and pub- lic for revolutionary music that had become almost formula.

He likened this to the jazz decline that resulted from endless small groups and orchestras that copied the successful pattern of solo breaks and musical developments and worked the same proved ideas to death.

"Innovators and artists in that area, and in the contemporary music," he said, "are always copied and gain their own recognition. But, the people emulating them usually destroy the public's taste for their sound." He added, though, that the originators

are generally returned to years later for refreshed inspiration.

Thus, with the young performers in search of a different direction, Rago- voy found that they were turning to the experimenters and sources of music that is already regarded as "traditional." The country/western. blues, classical and even pop standard giants (writers and performers) have become their models-all pointing to softer, simpler patterns of melody and lyric forms.

As a side comment, Ragovoy also expressed the opinion that this re- evaluation was an almost direct re- sult of the conservative mood of the country. "Tastes," he said, "in cloth- ing such as the midi style; art re- flecting the taste of the '20's and '30's; and now music, are showing the influence of conservative think- ing."

Opinion Borne Out In the space of two months since

he made those comments, Ragovoy's opinion has been borne out, not only in the showings of new artists, but also in a marked change on the part of established names.

Returns to the roots have unearthed renewed interest on pop levels of folk and country blends such as offered by

All per share amounts have been adjusted to reflect the special 10% stock divi- dend paid in Oct. 1970.

Operations in the current fiscal year resulted in earnings of $1,506,- 000 or $1.23 per share compared to earnings of $315,000 or 260 per share for the prior fiscal year.

ABKCO also announced a special 3% stock dividend on shares of its common stock, payable on Feb. 11, 1971 to shareholders of record as of Jan. 15, 1971.

Extraordinary income for the cur- rent fiscal year amounted to $400,- 000 or 33e per share, as a result of the utilization of available tax losses carried over from prior periods. Ex- traordinary income was reduced $100,000 from the amount previously reported due to the limitation of prior period tax losses to specific subsidi- aries. For the prior fiscal year, extra- ordinary items aggregated $477,000 or39e per share.

ABKCO is engaged in the manu- facture and distribution of records, motion picture production, music pub- lishing and business management services.

James Taylor LP From Jubilee's Euphoria Label NEW YORK - Jubilee's "free -form" Euphoria label is releasing an album by James Taylor on Jan. 1.

According to Steve Blaine, presi- dent of Jubilee, the LP, called "James Taylor & the Original Flying Machine, 1967," contains a recording session made by the star when he was lead singer of the group, includ- ing out -takes, false starts, in -studio conversation and alternate takes.

Deal was made between Chip Tay- lor and Al Gorgoni, who produced the set for their Rainy Day label, once distributed by Jubilee, and Micky Eichner, Jubilee's exec vp and director of A&R and promo. LP, run- ning 24.50, consists of seven sides, six of which were written by Taylor, who sings lead vocal on five cuts. Odd cut is an instrumental track featuring Taylor's lead guitar. Tay- lor, who now records for Warner Bros. Records, developed into a ma- jor act in 1970.

Gordon Lightfoot and James Taylor, both of whom were comparatively un- recognized a year ago; or the turns on the part of Mike Nesmith or Cros- by, Stills, Nash & Young toward c&w inspiration.

The Gospel influence on Judy Col- lins, George Harrison and others; Elvis Presley looking into old coun- try hits; and the resurgence of stand- ard -styled hits such as "Close to You" or "It's Impossible" as well as pop sales showings for Ray Price and Jim Ed Brown further support the tend- ency toward traditionalism.

In that same time span, the politi- cal atmosphere has also eased. And with quiet on the campuses, and vocal opposition calmed, the atmosphere feels conducive to continued ease at the wellsprings of tomorrow's hits.

RIAA Lauds Bill On Protection Of Records & Tapes NEW YORK - The Recording In- dustry Association of America has expressed its "delight and total en- dorsement" of a Bill (S.4592) intro- duced last week by Senator John McClellan (D. -Ark.) amending the Federal Copyright Law to grant copyright protection to records and pre-recorded tapes.

Noting that the widespread unau- thorized duplication of recordings is causing irreparable injury to the rec- ord industry, performers and the publir, Senator McClellan urged the Congress to act on this issue inde- pendently of the general Copyright Revision Bill which is still pending before the Senate. He observed that the earliest feasible effective date for the implementation of a general reci- sion bill would be Jan. 1, 1973.

Senator McClellan declared that in- formation supplied to the Senate Copyright Subcommittee indicates that an estimated 18,000 illegal tapes are being produced daily, and depriv- ing the record industry, its distribu- tors and performing artists of an estimated $100 million annually. He also noted that the musicians lose out on moneys contributed by the legitimated industry to the Music Performance Trust Funds and that federal, state and local Governments do not receive tax revenues which they would otherwise get from the sale of legitimate products. And, he said, "Because the illegal duplication of recordings is rather simple, it affords a lucrative activity for orga- nized crime."

Individuals or groups having views on the subject were invited to express their comments to the Senate Copy- right Subcommittee.

Pope's Radio

Tc Broadcast `Superstar' HOLLYWOOD - The Pope's own private radio station will broadcast, in full, the controversial "Jesus Christ/Superstar" rock opera, which is the story of the last seven days of Christ's life.

Radio Vatican will present two special programs of the best selling Decca album with comments by its two authors Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber which will be taken from a previously recorded interview with the young writers by some Ro- man Catholic dignitaries.

A spokesman for the Pope's pri- vate radio station said, "Nothing like this has ever been broadcast on Ra- dio Vatican until now, but we feel that this is a work of considerable importance."

Tim Rice said: "When we contem- plated Jesus Christ Superstar, we thought that there might be resis- tance in Roman Catholic countries. But oddly enough it has been better received there than in some of the Church of England areas. We think that it must be that they have height- ened awareness of religious subjects- as opposed to what can only be de- scribed as apathy in England."

In Hollywood, Robert Stigwood, chairman of the board of the Robert Stigwood Organization, was finaliz- ing negotiations for a stage show version and the filming of the rock opera.

Finn Exits GRT SUNNYVALE, CALIF. - Larry Finn has left his post as national sales promo/merchandising manager of GRT Music Tapes. He joined the company last March after serving as merchandising manager with E. J. Korvette in New York. Finn can be reached at (408)-245-1563.

London VP's Goldfarb, Maguire NEW YORK-Herb Goldfarb, Walt Maguire and John Stricker have been named vice presidents of London Rec- ords, according to D. H. Toller -Bond, president of the company. The new appointments are of particular signi- ficance since the company has had no vice presidents on its executive team for nearly 10 years.

These key moves have been made as the company is completing the big- gest calendar year of sales in its his- tory, during which time London -affili- ated artists have accounted for 10 gold records.

The appointments, specifically, are as follows: Goldfarb as vice president, sales and marketing; Maguire as vice president, pop A & R; and Stricker as vice president, finance.

Both Maguire and Goldfarb are just now completing 20 years of serv- ice for London Records. Stricker joined the London staff as treasurer in 1962.

Maguire, a native of Germantown in Philadelphia, began his music busi- ness career in the radio field, as a disk jockey on WIP, Philadelphia; WCAM, Camden, and later with WNAR in nearby Norristown, Pa. From radio, he moved more directly into the disk scene by joining The Kaylor Company, an indie distribut- ing firm, in 1948. During this period, he also conducted his own daily sport show on WFIL-TV in Philadelphia.

In 1950, Maguire moved to New York to accept a sales post with Lon- don Records, which was being distri- buted in the Quaker City area by the Kaylor firm. Two years later, Maguire added limited A&R functions to his

& Stricker duties, and later became the instigator of a series of highly successful deals under which London became exclus- ive distributor for various outside labels and producers. During this period, the Felsted label was estab- lished to accommodate the works of American indie producers. Later, the firm acquired national distribution for both Hi Records in Memphis and Monument in Nashville.

Goldfarb, a native of Dorchester, Mass., in suburban Boston, began his career in records in 1941 as a sales- man with the Decca Records branch in Boston, actually during the time he was also attending Boston Uni- versity.

Goldfarb learned the business "from the ground up," performing all the basic jobs around the branch until becoming a New England area sales- man, travelling all six of those states. Later he served for two and a half years as a sales executive with Mutual Distributors of Boston which was one of London Records charter distributors when the company was formed in 1947.

He left his post as sales manager at Mutual Distributors to accept a call from London in New York, where he became New York branch man- ager. He held this post until 1962, when he became national sales and distribution manager for the firm, a role he has filled until now. Goldfarb lives with his wife and three children in College Point, Queens, New York. He is past president of the Music and Performing Arts Lodge of B'Nai B'Rith. He is also a past director of the music industry wing of the United Jewish Appeal.

Grammy Voting Gets Underway

Active members of the Record Aca- demy (NARAS) are currently en- gaged in the first round of voting for this year's Grammy Awards, follow- ing their receipt of official ballots and an Eligibility List covering more than 4,000 entries spread through 43 dif- ferent categories. As in previous years, members are limited to the number of fields in which they may vote, and have again been reminded to base their selections upon artistic creativ- ity rather than on popularity or any other influences.

Deadline for receipt of all ballots by Haskins and Sells, the independent accounting firm that has been tabulat- ing the Grammys ever since their in- ception, is Tuesday, Jan. 5. This round of voting determines the finalists, to be announced early in Feb. Winners of the 13th annual Grammy Awards will be revealed on Tuesday, March 16, many of them on a nation-wide telecast, others at the various presen- tation ceremonies to be held in the Academy's chapter cities.

Following last year's procedures, arrangers are receiving special ballots this year, with voting in this field lim- ited to those actively engaged in it. Finalsts in three other craft cate- gories-engineering, album covers and album notes-will be determined again by special committees in each of the chapter cities. The entire member- ship will be offered opportunities to vote in the final round in these craft categories.

Ready Hill's LP On Atlantic LOS ANGELES-Atlantic Records is readying the debut album release for Joel Scott Hill, a singer -guitarist who is presently filling in with Canned Heat on their current tour. The LP is produced by Paul Rothchild, who is well known for his production work for the Doors. Joining Hill on the set are drummer John Barbata who has been playing with CSN&Y, bassist Chris Ethridge, and keyboardist Spooner Oldham. Making guest ap- pearances throughout the album are such musical luminaries as Dr. John, Booker T., John Sebastian, and Merry Clayton. The music is reported to have a "tight Stax-like sound, much like Otis Redding's." The 1p is sche- duled for early Feb. release.

Classics IV Record Solo Album For UA GEORGIA-Buddy Buie, president of BBC Productions, has announced the signing of four members of the Lib- erty recording group Dennis Yost and The Classics IV to a recording con- tract of their own with United Artists Records. The yet unnamed group con- sists of Classics IV members Sam Traina on lead guitar, Bill Gilmore on bass, organ player Danny Ramos, and drummer Chris DeMarco. Steppenwolf Sues Dunhill HOLLYWOOD-Steppenwolf has filed suit in Santa Monica Superior Court against Dunhill Records and six John Does for "breach of contract, oppres- sive, threatening and unfair conduct, for termination of contract, for an ac- counting, for imposition of trust, and for an injunction". The suit was filed Dec. 17 by Steppenwolf's attorney Sy R. Cohen.

Members of Steppenwolf acting as plaintiffs are: Joachim F. Krauledat (John Kay), John Goadsby (Goldy McJohn), Jerry McCrohan (Jerry Ed- munton) and Larry Byrom.

Charges of the suit allege that: Dunhill computed royalties at a

lower rate than provided for in the plaintiff's contract.

An audit of sales from Jan. 1, 1968 to Dec. 31, 1969 shows that Dunhill owes said plaintiff the unpaid sum of $104,312.81 plus legal interest of 7% for that time period.

Failure to render a true accounting amounts to breach of contract.

Damages, to be determined later, are due the group.

Royalties, due the group, from Dec. 31, 1969 would amount to a sum sub- stantially in excess of $100,000.

The conduct of Dunhill president Jay Lasker toward the plaintiffs has been, for the past 6 months, "Threat- ening, menacing, and oppressive".

The suit also seeks a court order to "enjoin & restrain" Dunhill and Lasker from "interfering and pre- venting plaintiffs from entering into and engaging in talks, discussions and negotiations with other produc- tion companies, record companies and record distributors for the production, release, distribution and sale of all future recordings heretofore to be made and recorded by the group.

The suit also seeks a preliminary injunction and permanent injunction enjoining Dunhill and Lasker from instituting any law suits or other legal action against any company who may enter into or engage in any talks, discussions and negotiations with plaintiffs in regard to new production, recording or distribution contracts.

Steppenwolf first joined Dunhill on Aug. 15, 1967 with an exclusive writ- ten recording contract. The group, to date, has recorded 7 albums and an unspecified number of singles.

Court Denies

Injunction Re:

`Diana!' TV'er NEW YORK - Motown Produc- tions, Inc. won a legal decision last week in Winters/Rosen Productions' attempt to prevent airing of Mo- town -"Diana!" TV special starring Diana Ross, when Judge Jerry Pacht, in Los Angeles Superior Court, De- partment 65, denied Winters/Rosen's motion for an injunction which would have kept "Diana!" from being released and distributed.

In denying the injunction, Judge Pacht stated that Winters/Rosen had not presented a strong enough case to warrant an injunction. Motown was represented by Albert F. Smith of Loeb & Loeb, and Winters/Rosen by Robert Thau of Rosenfield, Meyer and Susman.

"Diana!", which in addition to Miss Ross stars Bill Cosby, he Jackson 5, and Danny Thomas, was taped in Los Angeles the weekend of December 5, for airing on ABC-TV in March.

Last October 15, Winters/Rosen brought suit against Motown, ABC and Berry Gordy, Motown's Pres- ident, claiming 50% ownership in the project via verbal agreements with Motown. Motown, in turn, said that only exploratory and incomplete con- versations had taken place. The spe- cial was consequently taped after the court denied Winters/Rosen applica- tion for a temporary restraining or- der on Dec. 4.

MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, NYC-Grand Funk Railroad. Many have called them the hype group of the decade. Others have called them great musicians. They are neither. Grand Funk is talented in a way that no other American group before them were talented. They play loud, funky, down to earth, tap your feet, clap your hands music. Music that dares you to sit still, lyrics that invite your attention and the kids love it. Golden children. Platinum children. Children of all ages.

THE ABERBACH GROUP 241 West 72 Street, New York, N.Y.

Grand Funk played two weekend shows at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 11 and 18, and to the passerby, it must have looked like a conven- tion. The response to the shows were incredible. Tickets were sold out al- most as fast as they were put on sale, and the evenings of the shows, tickets were being sold for as high as 30 dollars each on the streets.

I despise rock shows at the Garden, but I just had to see what makes Grand Funk, funk. Once on stage, Grand Funk Railroad had the 20,- 000 screaming fans in the palms of their hands. THEY were in control. No violence. No injuries. No disorders. Just music. "Are You Ready," "Mean Mistreater," "Heartbreaker," "Para- noid," "Closer To Home," and the crowd went dancing down the aisles -enjoying. Enjoying-that's what it's all about. Now I think we all under- stand.

Mark Earner, Don Brewer, and Mel Schacher will never become the new Beatles. No one will. But as long as they remain Grand Funk Railroad, they'll continue to make millions of music lovers happy by bringing them all closer to home.

Opening the Dec. 18 show at the Garden were A&M recording artists Humble Pie, who were probably playing before their largest crowd ever. Nevertheless, they performed an unusually tight hard rock set with plenty of movement on stage by the performers. Though their album sales aren't indicative of their reception, Humble Pie will soon emerge as one of England's finest rock groups. They offer everything that can be expected, and always give their all.

Judy Collins CARNEGIE HALL, NYC-Midway through her recent Carnegie Hall con- cert and during a particularly lengthy tuning break, Judy Collins remarked that this might be the last time she worked with electronic instruments. Though the comment had been made humorously, it was met with a hearty round of applause.

A Judy Collins concert is always something of an event in New York. Her last appearance here, at the Schaefer Festival in Central Park, was a memorable one and there was no reason to think that this one would not be equally fine and endur- ing. That it was not to be was appar- ent almost from the start.

A freshness, even a childlike en- thusiasm, is usually a hallmark of Judy's concerts. It seems as if she approaches each song with a won- derfully surprise -able spirit and, as the piece unwinds, we find ourselves caught up in a similar way. At Car- negie Hall it was a different case. Something akin to weariness was in the air and through Judy dispersed it at scattered intervals of the even- ing, it never really managed to blow away.

Several items from her most re- cent album ("Oh Had I A Golden Thread," "Song For David" and "The Patriot Game") proved particularly effective as did familiar favorites such as "Someday Soon" and "Chelsea Morning." The singer encored with

"Both Sides Now" one of her strong- est selections.

Naturally, Judy will continue to work with electrics, as well she should. And to do exceptional concerts. Through her Carnegie appearance was not in that category, we can expect that next time out, she'll be back in top form.

Janus Signs Cissy Houston NEW YORK - Marvin Schlachter, president of Janus Records, has an- nounced the signing of Cissy Houston, formerly lead vocalist in the Sweet Inspirations, to an exclusive, long- term recording contract.

Cissy Houston has arranged, per- formed on, or acted as musical con- sultant on over 300 single records to date, backing such artists as Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Shelley Manne, Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick (who just happens to be her niece), Connie Francis, Bobbie Gentry, Leslie Uggams and Wilson Pickett among others. Last Septem- ber, while appearing with Elvis Pres- ley at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, Cissy decided to strike out on her own as a soloist. Since that time she has made several appearances on the Tonight Show, and became a popular guest on a host of other TV talk and variety programs.

WHERE'S LUCY?-Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun visits with members of Juicy Lucy backstage at the Whisky A Go Go following their open- ing at the Los Angeles club. The British group recently completed their first American tour. Their second 1p, "Lie Back and Enjoy It," was recently released on the Ateo label.

Hodes, Linda Schoenfeld and Motown Records.

HOLLYWOOD-ENTERTAINMENT-FOR MEN. As Jimmy Durante constantly reminds, everybody wants to get into the act.

About six years ago we began our "west coast girl of the week" segment in this column. We won't go into a complete history of the brain storm or the reasons behind it. Except to say we figured it might help our circulation. And the maga- zine's.

Our first west coast gal was a model/billboard gal on Hollywood Palace who was trying to break into films. We're told she finally did. Her name was Raquel Welch.

Another was a dancer and part time songwriter who played us a few things she had written months before signing with a record label. One of the songs was titled "Ode to Billy Joe."

On occasion we've even had "West coast guys of the week," though few were very attractive as Welch or Gentry. Bob Levinson and Tony Richland, maybe. But not many others.

Now, we're told, there's to be a "Playboy of the Month" in the record trade. The idea was dreamed up by Petagram Records partner Bobby Applegate who has put his talented actress -artist wife. Nancy Priddy to work caricaturing the staff at Pentagram. It is being inserted into a newsletter going out to jocks, distribs and manufacturers.

In promoting the firm this way, Applegate feels he can humanize the com- pany and create interest in what it's up to. Once the plattery execs have been

cartooned Nancy will go to work on D.J.'s and distributors. Others partnered at Pentagram are Al Schmitt and Steve Douglas. Apple-

gate is currently functioning as g.m., v.p. and exec producer for the firm. harvey geller

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?-Last March, Joe Cocker assembled the largest rock group ever to hit the American stage. With the help of Dee Anthony of Bandana I lanagement, and Shelter Record's Leon Russell, a group known as Mad Dogs & Englishmen emerged. The entourage of 36 included musicians, soundmen, secre- taries, road managers, managers, wives, lovers and other strangers, children and animals.

With financial backing from A&M Records, the tour was filmed. It started in

Detroit, and wound up in California. Soon, a feature depicting the travels and travails of those memorable 57 days will be released.

Meanwhile, what of those daring, diehard, dirty three dozen? Cocker is cutting an album at Muscle Shoals, under producer Denny Cordell.

Russell, who with Cordell produced the "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" album, is

producing product for his own Shelter Records, including material for Capt. Mac- Donald and Claudia Linnear, both of whom toiled with the traveling sideshow.

Rita Coolidge is with Roxy, making a big name on the concert circuit. Carl Radle, Jim Gordon and Bobby Whitlock joined Eric Clapton's Derek & the Dominoes. Chris Stainton and Chuck Blackwell are doing sessions with Cocker, and Cordell is back at Shelter. Ron Moore is producing Atlee on the Dunhill label, with Buzz Clifford, and Nicole Barclay is with Reprise's all -girl group, Fanny.

The others are scattered with the musical winds, and there will never be a

reunion. But at least, there is a feature film to mark the journey of one of the greatest rock odysseys in modern day history. Joe Cocker Bobby Applegate, Al Schmitt Mad Dogs And Englishmen

IT'S AN HONOR-Loretta Lynn, ap- pearing on the David Frost Show, presented the host with an honorary membership in the Country Music Association. The Decca artist was making lier second appearance on the Frost program. Presentation was ar- ranged by Dick Broderick, v.p. of MCA Records International Division, who was recently named chairman of the board of the CMA.

LP In The Making Aired On KMET-FM LOS ANGELES - KMET-FM has begun a nightly series tracing the recording techniques used in the pro- duction of a contemporary record. The show, broadcast on the B. Mitchell Reid timeslot, traces the steps in pro- duction and recording of a new album by Spencer Davis and Peter Jamison, recently signed to the Mediarts label.

Jay Senter, who is currently pro- ducing the album, has been giving KMET tapes of each recording ses- sion as it progresses, starting with a basic acoustical guitar track, pro- gressing through the overdubbing process and additions of other instru- mentation onto the tracks. Reid ex- plains the process and terminology as each tracked is aired.

The concept, believed to be a radio first, was devised by Senter and KMET general manager Nat Asch. Initial audience response has prompted other Metromedia stations.

NEW SEEKER POWER-Elektra artists, the New Seekers, taped their sec- ond Andy Williams Show and are seen here with the host. Show will be aired nationwide on January 9. The group, whose latest single is "Beautiful People," also guested recently on the Ed Sullivan TV'er. Their first LP is due in Febru- ary.

SALISBURY-Uriah Heep-Mercury SR 61319 Second release from Uriah Heep (dem little

Dickens) finds them smack dab in the middle of mainstream progressive British music. They come from the genre of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple who all thrive, very well thank you, on tight controlled 'heavy' sounds from both electric guitar and organ. In those categories Uriah has Mick Box and Ken Hensley respectively and they're both ex- cellent. Tunes are all group of Hensley - penned and all interesting. Most of side two is devoted to the extended title track which employs brass and woodwind ar- rangements by John Fiddy. Particularly com- pelling are the slower, though no Ness 'heavy' tracks, like "The Park."

Newcomer Picks MCGUINNESS FLINT-Capitol-SMAS 625

First off, there's more to McGuinness Flint than dat 'ole man Hype would have us be- lieve. While "When I'm Dead And Gone" is both fascinatingly good music and instantly commercial, Flint is far from the preprocessed teenybopper music crowd. They're in the van- guard of the 'British Highlands Rock' brigade that includes Brinsley Schwarz, Bronco, and Cochise. It's a delight to listen to. The Ip is varied. Besides the single there's "Brother Psyche," "Dream Darling Dream," "Lazy Afternoon," and "International." 1971 has its first new hit group.

I THINK, THEREFORE I AM-R. Dean Taylor- Rare Earth RS 522

Those of us who knew of R. Dean Taylor from the days of "Gotta See Jane" (a super - smash in Britain, but a miss here), eagerly anticipated his first album after his first singles blockbuster of "Indiana Wants Me." Yet after the two songs just mentioned, "Wo- man Alive," and "Love Your Name" there's nothing really outstanding in the set. It's very competent top forty material. "Gotta See Jane" is such a brilliant record that it's hard to believe that Taylor would settle for this rather unspectacular debut. Still it's instantly commercial and chock full of good radio play cuts. Could be Motown has found its own Neil Diamond.

Pop Best Bets SISYPHUS-Cold Blood-San Francisco-SD 205

This is the second album release for Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, and it's getting better all the time. Lydia has a powerful voice and is capable of performing driving rock songs and soulful blues tunes with great ease, as the band takes off in many directions with their own brand of original material. Side one of this LP seems to be greatly influenced by Santana, whose conga player lent a hand on two of the tracks. Highlighting the album are "Shop Talk," "Funky On My Back," and "I Can't Stay."

ROAD-The Winter Consort-A&M SP4279 For a long time, musicians have been say-

ing that they don't like to put labels on their music. If you've been wondering why, listen to this album. It's good music, and that's all! The six men who comprise the Winter Con- sort are all brilliant musicians and tslented songwriters. They don't need labels, they need your attention. The Winter Consort makes use of cellos, oboes, and classical guitars, and uses them to every possible advantage. Al- bum contains eight absolutely unforgetable cuts.

BACHARACH BAROQUE-The Renaissance- Ranwood RLP 8084

Here's package of eleven Burt Bachar- ach/Hal David compositions given unusual readings by the Renaissance. Everyone who saw "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid," for which Burt did the score will be familiar with the arrangements here. The vocals are done in the same way as a couple of the tunes in the film, notably the chase sequences in Bolivia. It's an excellent MOR album. Best cuts include "The Look Of Love," "Walk On By," and "I Say A Little Prayer." Nicely done.

Minsky, Kirshner Form Film Company NEW YORK - Howard G. Minsky, producer of "Love Story", and Don Kirshner have formed a picture com- pany, Minsky -Kirshner, Inc. They will start production on their first prop- erty, "Gangster", by mid -1971.

"Gangster" is an original screen- play by Thomas Thompson and it will be followed immediately by another original screenplay by novelist George Mendoza, "You Show Me Yours, And I'll Show You Mine."

Kirshner, chairman of the board of Kirshner Entertainment Corp., re- cently developed a new worldwide music publishing company with Great Britain's ATV, that includes control of the Beatles' American pub- lishing rights. Minsky is the former head of the film department of Wil- liam Morris which he left two years ago to produce "Love Story", based upon the best selling novel by Erich Segal.

Interrobang Inks John Wells Group NEW YORK - Terry Cashman and Tommy West have signed the John Wells Delegation of Washington, D. C. to Interrobang Productions.

The four musicians, John Wells, Tom Merther, Tom Garber and Ben Mason are native Washingtonians. They recently achieved national prominence on NBC's American Rain- bow Series (scoring and playing) and creatively blending folk and rock into a danceable music form of folk rock.

With all four singing lead on vari- ous songs, the four are musicians on 10 instruments, as well as writers.

They shall be under the personal management of Showcase Manage- ment Corp. and Neil Simmons and will be published by Blendingwell Music, Inc., Interrobang affiliates. A label deal is in the works.

Cashman and West are also the producers of Maury Muehleisen for Interrobang Productions. An LP is released on Capitol Records.

George Jones Stays w/ Musicor NEW YORK - George Jones long- term exclusive pact with Musicor Records is still in force and does not expire until 1973, label counsel has reported. Announcement is designed to squelch rumors of a label change by the country star.

JIM NESBITT (Chart 5112) I Love Them Old Nasty Cigarettes (2:10) (Yonah Music, BMI-J. Nes- bitt) Staying well within the confines of novelty material, Jim Nesbitt, who gave us the controversial "Spiro" single is back again with another offering. Disregarding the surgeon generals warnings, Nesbitt still loves them nasty cigarettes. An instant hit with the tobacco industry, this record could come from left field and made the charts. Flip: "Nice Guys Always Finish Last" (2:05) (Same Credits)

RUSS RUSSELL (Renegade 1205) Hillbilly Waltz (2:24) (Adventure Music, ASCAP-G&R Russell) Al- ready breaking in many country mar- kets, it looks as if Russ will have a sizeable hit on his hands. With all the airplay it's been getting, don't be surprised if "Hillbilly Waltz" hits the charts. Flip: "If She's On The Menu" (2:03) (Same Credits)

DANNY HARRISON (Deneba 7614) Just Because You Go To Church (2:45) (Lonzo & Oscar Music, BMI- D. Harrison) A fine vocal per- formance on this ballad by Danny that could make this single a giant record in the weeks to come. Flip: "Go On In" (2:29) (Same Credits)

DICKEY LEE (RCA) Special (2:36) (Jack & Bill Music, ASCAP-B. Rice, J. Foster This rec- ord is somewhat special, as it con- tains a fine lyric and a beautiful mu- sical accompaniment. Flip: There's Nobody Home To Go To (2:40) (Jack Music, BMI-Lee-Reynolds- Addington)

CECIL NULL AND ANNETTE (BJB 1001) God Bless You Girl (Cedarwood, BMI-Cecil Null) This soft ballad by Cecil has plenty of country feeling and is worth listening to over and over again. Flip: "Crazy Love" (Same Credits)

GEORGE LEWIS (LSI 001) Do Right Woman, Do Right Man (2:48) (Press Music, BMI-Moman- Penn) This country tune with tricky syncopation that adds to the overall enjoyment, has plenty of hit poten- tial. Flip: "Heaven Can't Wait" (3:18) (Leson Music, ASCAP-G. Lewis)

DOC WILLIAMS (Wheeling 1045) Daddy's Little Angel (2:35) (Time Being Music, BMI-W. H. Jackson) Daddy's Little Angel is a soft and tender ballad superbly performed by the good Doc Williams. Lots of chart prospects with this one. Flip: "My West Verginia Home" (1:55) (Crown Vetch, KAPAC-D. Williams, B. Kempf)

ELTON BRITT (Certron 10019) Step Into My Soul (2:54) (Mayhew, BMI-A. Mayhew, J. Paycheck) El- ton Britt delivers a vibrant per- sormance with this ballad that also features excellent backing vocals and string arrangements. Flip: "These Things I'm Not" (2:28) (Same Cred- its)

JOHNNY WRIGHT (Decca 32770) Where The Heart Aches Hang Around (2:19) (Blue Crest Music, BMI - D. Frazier) This record is country all the way. Catchy melodic qualities will insure its success in the weeks to come. Flip: "Something To Come Home To" (2:24) (Fred Rose Music, BMI - F&A Thomas)

BRIAN COLLINS (Mega 615-0012) Your Kind Of Man (2:55) (Hall - Clement, BMI - Foster, Rice) Terri- bly powerful vocal performance on this ballad with excellent use of re- cording dynamics and background vocals. Flip: "Walkin'" (2:08) (Arawak, ASCAP - B. Collins)

BOBBY G. RICE (Royal American 27) Lover, Please (1:52) (Lyn -Lou Mu- sic, BMI - B. Swan) A great revival of this tune that could start the ball rolling all over again for the country fans. Flip: "You're So Easy To Love" (2:15) (Birmingham Music, BMI - Riis, Rice, Fields)

DARRELL DODSON (Show Land 101970) I'll Cry Tomorrow (2:51) (Grand - wealth Music, BMI - B. Hess) A pretty ballad all about the predic- tions of a fortune teller. Could be a big record. Flip: "Here Comes That Heartache Again" (2:37) (Same Credits)

MARY ANN CRIDER (TAD 0001) The American Dream (3:10) (Lake Forrest Music, ASCAP - C. Crider) Although many people consider it to be a fantasy, the American Dream does exist. Pay close attention to Mary Ann's version. Flip: "Going Back To Nashville" (1:39) (Same Credits)

MANHATTAN TRANSFER (Capitol 2968) Rosianna (3:00) (Blendingwell Mu- sic, ASCAP - Picardo, Minogue, Pistilli) This is basically a pop rec- ord with enough country flavoring to go both ways. Nowadays, that seems to be the trend, and this record could keep the ball rolling. Flip: "Care For Me" (2:20) (Gigunda, ASCAP - M. Nelson)

BEN SMATHERS (Cartwheel 191) Busin' Them Younguns (2:12) (Green Grass Music, BMI - B. Smathers) An up tempo banjo recital by Ben that should he attracting lots of at- tention because of the importance of the topic. Flip: "Common As A Shoe" (2:48) (Same Credits)

CHUCK WOOD (Ambertone 45 - 104) The Bottle In The Hand (2:44) (De- mand Music, BMI - R. Mack) An interesting point of view as Chuck feels that the bottle in the hand is much stronger than the man. Worth listening to. Flip: "She's There When I Come Home" (2:40) (Jack & Bill Music - ASCAP - Foster, Rice)

BETH MOORE (Capitol 3013) Put Your Hand In The Hand (2:29) (Beechwood Music, BMI-G. MacLel- lan) A good story line and fine vocal effort highlight this new release from Beth. Record should be getting lots of extra spins that could put it in contention. Flip: "I'm Losin' My Man" (2:34) (Tree, BMI-Tom Hart- man)

UA Radio Hotline Gives Country News NASHVILLE - News of Nashville and the world of country music is being provided free, three times per week by Liberty/UA, Inc., via a tele- phone "hot line". Service is the brainchild of Biff Collie of United Artists Nashville office, who also acts as commentator, being an ex radio announcer himself.

Each Monday, Wednesday, and Fri-

day, for twenty four hours, area code 615, phone number 256-635 is open, and radio stations throughout the nation are responding enthusiastical- ly by taping the news via the tele- phone. Service is of five minutes dur- ation and Collie has subsequently be- come well known all over the coun- try, and is being beseiged by requests to tape personal station intros and promos to go hand in hand with the "Inside Nashville" Liberty/UA pro- motion.

"Five Easy Pieces"was almost called "Stand By Your Man" "Stand By Your Man" was actually

one of the original working titles of the current motion picture "Five Easy Pieces." But the song is more than just part of the background music. It's the story of a whole life- style, and Tammy Wynette has been singing about that life-style and those people since she began to sing.

:,ri.' . .

Richard Schickel of Life magazine said: "If you see nothing else this year you must see 'Five Easy Pieces."

Archer Winsten of the New York Post called it "a marvelous picture."

Gail Rock of Women's Wear Daily has hailed it as "one of the best films of 1970."

"Five Easy Pieces": the original soundtrack from the motion picture. (And also Tammy Wynette's latest album.)

The leading German music trade journal "Der Musikmarkt" has just published statistics of a recordbalance for the year 1970, which shows that opposite to the preceding year Eng- lish and American authors could gain in the German charts. The reason is not easy to find. Perhaps it might be the fact that in the single-, as well as in the LP-hitparades-, rock, Underground and most of all pro- gressive music could assert themself. The most prominent group in 1970 was Creedence Clearwater Revival. They scored with 6 singles and 5 LP's in chart the absolut German record. Also successful were Jethro Tull, Frijid Pink, Free, Led Zeppelin, Ten Years After and many others. To re - marke is also the success-mainly on the single sector-of German stars as Roy Black, Michael Holm, Peter Maffay and Chris Roberts.

In 1970 about 2,500 single new re- leases came on the German market. 234 titles of them reached the top 40. They split up to the following record firms: 1. Electrola, 48 titles = 20,51%, 2. Teldec-Telefunken-Decca, 39 titles = 16,67%, 3. Ariola, 35 titles = 14,96%, 4. Deutsche Gram- mophon/Polydor, 34 titles = 14,53%, 5. Phonogram Tonges., 26 titles = 11,11%, 6. CBS, 21 titles = 8,98%, 7. Bellaphon, 11 titles = 4,70%, 8. Metronome, 10 titles = 4,27%, 9. Liberty/United Artists, 6 titles 2,56%, 10. Deutsche Vogue, 3 titles = 1,28%, 11. Cornet, 1 title = 0,43%. Especially interesting is to explore of which authors the 234 hitparade titles

are descended from. The result is as follows: a) from English and Ameri- can authors: 143 titles - 61,11%, b) from German authors 69 titles = 29,49%, c) from several foreign au- thors 22 titles = 9,40%. The music publishing houses, which are repre- sented 1970 with 7 or more titles in the single-hitparade are: 1. In- tro = 36 titles, 2. Gerig = 32 titles, 3. Melodie der Welt = 22 titles, 4. Aberbach = 21 titles, 5. Budde =- 19 titles, 6. Global = 12 titles, 7. Accord = 8 titles, 8. Montana = 8 titles, 9. Arends = 7 titles, 10. Slezak = 7 titles.

The successful producer and author Fred Weyrich, who was busy until now exclusive for Philips (Phono- gram), will produce from January on Ivan Rebroff and the Jugoslavian woman singer Dunja Rajter. The con- tract between CBS and Weyrich was even signed.

The popular hit singer Heino con- cluded a 10 years contract with his record firm Electrola. Heino is one of the top sellers of his firm and was shortly awarded with the "golden dog" of Electrola for more than one million sold singles in one year.

Simon & Garfunkel plans for the spring 1971 a tournee through Europe and will also visit Germany and Aus- tria. Paul Simon is descended on his father's side from Austria. Both mu- sicians created in Germany with "El Condor Pasa" the hit of the year .. .

Next week we will bring an annual report about the single and LP best- sellers as well as about the most suc- cessful interprets in Germany.

The Beach Boys played in Paris last week, but due to very bad pro- motion, only a handful of people turned out for the show. Further- more, the group got all their instru- ments held up at customs, and had to play with borrowed instruments. A poor show in every way. It is ri- diculous to witness failures in France of such big names in the world of pop music only because someone is not doing his job the way it should be done.

Barclay's best sellers: Mireille Ma- thieu, Maurice Dulac, Marianne Mille and Phillippe Lavil all on singles. For LPs: Michael Delpech, Guy Bedos, Sophie Daumier and Léo Ferré .

Barclay is still heavily publishing The Poppys, a young children's group singing a revolutionary Christmas song: 40,000 copies sold in over a fortnight ... "Musidisc" is releasing a three LPs set of Charlie Mingus at the Theatre des Champs Elysées .. .

RCA is releasing a single by the

Checkmates from the A&M label. The Phil Spector produced album is to be released soon.

CBS will release the new single by T. Rex doing big business in Great Britain. They will be in Paris on De- cember 22nd for a TV and back in February for a concert . . . CBS Masterwork has signed an exclusive deal with Hector Miranda manager of the group of Los Calchakis to release in France a booklet on how to play the indian flute . Richard Anthony is to record a French cover of a French hit sung in English by the Aphrodite's Child: "Mr. Thomas"

Jean Jacques Tilché (manager of les Editions Tutti and Harry d'Arc Auerhaan (International Department of Tutti's went to Hamburg for the annual congress of Intersong pres- ided by Georges Meyerstein Maigret. SEGA/Toho To Expand Arcade Program At the opening last week of a 125 -

game arcade on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido, Toho Film Stu- dios President Tatsuo Matsuoka and SEGA director Noboru Hirohara re- vealed plans for an expanded pro- gram of joint -venture arcades. The projected "family fun centers" will follow the general pattern of SEGA/ Toho arcades now located in Japan's major cities.

SEGA director Noboru Hirohara (left) with Toho Film Studio presi- dent Tatsuo Matsuoka at the new Toho Leisure Bldg.'s 125 -game arcade on the second floor.

The newly opened arcade in Sap- poro City is divided into 2 large rooms which occupy the 2nd floor of the large Toho Leisure Building. The next "family fun center" scheduled under the new program will be a 70 game operation to open this month in Nagasaki. Others will follow shortly under the speeded -up pro- gram.

Hirohara and Operations Division Director John Kano carried a con- gratulatory message to the official opening from SEGA's Ray Lemaire. Inaugural ceremonies were high- lighted by the presence of several Toho film stars.

EDITORIAL: The Grass

Is Getting Greener Last Tuesday, the Chase Manhattan Bank an-

nounced a reduction in its prime interest rate from 7% down to 63/4%. The move was immediately fol- lowed by several other large banking concerns and financiers looked to Washington to move down its discount rate.

While this high level move won't immediately filter down to the industry's strata, it is indicative of better times ahead for all. The prime rate reduction men- tioned above is actually the third since mid -November, when it sat at an uncomfortable 71/2%, and it clearly shows the financial braintrusts are seriously trying to move the economy off the soft shoulder and back on the highway.

Hopefully, the recession will begin relaxing the first quarter of 1971, as many predict. Surely, we're bound to see some light before the pending year is out. But will a return to "normalcy" bring a return of prosperity for all in the music and amusement ma- chine industry? Not unless every tradester takes the hint of the big bankers and moves in a more positive way.

The segment of the industry most seriously affected by the recession thus far has been the manufacturer - distributor complex. The operator, while suffering a dip here and there in his collection pot, hasn't been badly hurt by a long shot. But never -the -less, many an operator has hedged against a feared drop in collections by cutting back on his machine purchasing, directly creating the soft machine sales mentioned above.

We said "most seriously affected . . . thus far" advisedly, with the accent on thus far. Because, if those operators continue to lay back on upgrading their stops with better earning equipment long enough, the word "earning" will eventually disap- pear. And as those earnings trickle off, so does the op's buying power. The dawning of a viscious cycle, no?

Therefore, the ticket is to put aside the gloom clouds as 1971 approaches and think not only pro- gressively but courageously. If there are machines you know in your heart you really need, well go out and buy them, and buy them now. The industry, your industry, needs a shot of adrenalin and you the oper- ator have the medicine in your hand. No denying it, every industry has suffered from this tight money thing, but this is our industry, and your business is a vital part of it.

Dealers and factories can move out aggressively themselves. There are numerous ways of merchan- dising extra equipment sales through promotional pro- grams or just plain sales savy. Dealer salesmen in particular must start drumming and drumming loud. Operators with any sense of business savy will listen to that drumming.

Toward this end, for what it's worth, may we at Cash Box wish you that happy and especially pros- perous New Year.

Ca4h b0x/ Round The Route EASTERN FLASHES

IFS THAT TIME AGAIN-New Yorkers "welcomed" winter last Tuesday with clenched fists and a "here we go again" attitude. The dreary season started off in grand style with a swirling snowstorm, which quickly turned to filthy slush, putting a crimp to anything resembling normal route traffic. Metro area routemen can count at least one blessing in that their distance between stops is nothing compared to that faced by upstaters and New Englanders. Well, there's nothing to do except grin and bear it and let's hope the cold outside keeps the customers inside the warm watering spots and their coins warming up the industry's hungry cash boxes.

AROUND TOWN-Ben Chicofsky at the association says the town's operators are really showing that holiday spirit by digging deep for the Cardinal Spellman Servicemen's Club drive. Ben's mailing went out to MONY members couple of weeks back and already checks are coming thru nicely-very nicely. Association prexy Al Denver, who announced the drive at last MONY meeting, had said: "our members have always contributed generously to this worthy undertaking. Fortu- nately, there are dedicated men and women who offer their time, efforts and ener- gies for the happiness and good cheer of our boys and girls in the service." Al also info's that about 13,000 servicemen and women visit the Spellman Club in midtown Manhattan each month. Bet there are plenty who found the place a welcome oasis during the busy, bustling New York holidays . . . Another fund drive going well these days is operator Iry Fenicel's push for support of his 67 precinct Auxiliary Police group. Iry mailed an appeal to MONY'ers about a month ago. Extra promotional kick in Irv's appeal was complimentary movie tickets for contributors, good at most Lowe's theaters up to Jan. 31st.

Winter weather engulfed the eastern states as far souh as Northern Florida causing all of the usual service problems . . . Heard from Rock -Ola distrib Gene Wallace in West Virginia that icy roads kept his service truck trapped in the high country around Granville for 20 hours . . . at the same time, NSM distrib Tommy Greco called to say that for an old-fashioned Christmas picture post -card, snowmen and all, just take a trip to his town of Glasco in the hills of New York State . . . and right close by, to fill out this weather report, John Bilotta says: "the warm weather is fine, but when it's Christmas, we all like the snow." .. . he's not alone . . . talked to Mickey Greenman just back from a sales swing through the southeast visiting NSM distribs talking up the new Prestige 160-B and Consul . . . word from New Jersey has it that ARA's Silco music division under guidance of Harry "Juke Box" Goldman busily updating their giant route with new Seeburg's, Rowe AMI's and NSM Prestiges . . . Big dilemma growing on New York City's 10th avenue these days over growing urban renewal program and shrinking of good industry space; more about this in a later tissue .. - the word is out about that new and revolutionary photo machine exhibited by International Mutoscope and prexy Larry Galante says he's swamp- ed with requests for equipment. Delivery promised late winter early spring.

CHICAGO CHATTER Here's to 1971-hope it will be a very good year for everyone .. - You might

mark the dates March 19-21 on your new calendars. The NAMA Western Con- ference and Exhibit will be held during this period at the Anaheim (Calif.) Con- vention Center . . . Something new and very exciting from Chicago Dynamic Industries. 'Mark Ill', patterned after the fabulous Speedway, is making its debut this week. Got the word from Mort Secore that sample shipments com- menced on Tues. (22nd) . . , ICMOA's executive director Fred Gain, in his latest newsletter to members, spells out the "value of association membership". He quotes from a recent Small Business Administration survey which revealed that, generally speaking, "trade association members enjoyed more business than non-members." What better incentive for joining! . . . Bally Mfg. Corp's Herb Jones says the factory's biggest items of the day are 'See Saw' and 'Target Zero'. Both are doing extremely well.

Mort Levinson of National Coin Machine Exchange was happy to receive his first shipment of the new Gottlieb 'Snow Derby', which has been very promi- nently displayed in the showroom-attracting plenty of operator attention, along with the Wurlitzer Zodiac, of course . . . The recent Seeburg Musical Bandshell service school hosted by World Wide Distrib was quite a successful event. Session was held in the evening and, from what Howie Freer tells us, a record number of operators and service personnel attended ... New Member of the sales staff at Empire's Chicago headquarters is Jim Segerson. Welcome aboard ... By the way, received word from Murph Gordon that the Empire -spon- sored Wisconsin -Illinois 8 -ball pool tournament will bet going right after the first of the year. Distrib's hoping to hold the April playoffs at the Lake Geneva Playboy Club.

Among operators participating in the tournament are Ken Seaver (Central Vending Service), Red Jacomet (Red's Novelty), Lou Alberfonte and John Chris- tiani (Northshore Novelty) Wayne Hesch (A&H Entertainers), John Bailey (Gene- ral Music), Ralph Winquist (Winquist Automatic) and Charles Merek (Star Music), ... 'My Mother-in-law Came Out of Retirement' is the title of the new Eddie and Dutch single on Ivanhoe Records. You'll recall their success with 'My Wife the Dancer'. Label prexy Eddie Mascari tells us operators are showing a lot of in- terest in the new side, which was released about a month ago.

The Gottlieb family had quite the blessed event to celebrate recently when Roberta Kaye, Alvin Gottlieb's younger sister, gave birth to her first child, a 7 lb. 4 oz. baby girl named Dana Gabriel. This brings the total number of Gottlieb grandchildren to seven. Our congratulations . . . Gus Tartol of Singer's One Stop gave us a list of several singles which are attracting local operator at- tention: '1900 Yesterday' by Liz Damon's Orient Express on White Whale, 'Georgia Sunshine' by Dean Martin on Reprise, 'Feelin' Kinda Sunday' by Nancy and Frank Sinatra on Reprise, 'Bein' Green' by Frank Sinatra on Reprise, 'Sweet Carloine' by Bert Kaempfert on Decca, 'Stoney End' by Barbara Streisand on Columbia and 'Toy Piano' by Jerry Smith on Decca.

MILWAUKEE MENTIO S Next week at this time it'' be

1971! Happy New Year every dy! . . . The annual holiday party h sted by Hastings Dist. Co. was heft, last Tuesday at Burries Supper CI' b in New Berlin-and a mighty gala affair it was. Employees and their wiv s en- joyed cocktails, dinner and a the trimmings! Routeman Roy Gierl a at- tended the party, of course, anc then prepared to head for sunny California to spend the holidays with his child- ren . . . We were deeply saddened by the news last week of the sudden death of Mel Melchore (Mel's Coin in Green Bay). He suffered a fatal heart attack just minutes after visiting his wife in the hospital. Mel was a very prominent operator in the area for many years and will be missed by his multitude of friends in the coin ma- chine industry. Our condolences to the Melchore family . . . The Milwau- kee Coin Machine Operators Assoc- ciation has scheduled its first meeting of the New Year for January 5. It will be a general membership ses- sion, at The Chalet in West Ellis. As-

sociation secretary "Red" Jacomet is

hopeful everyone will be fully re-

covered from the hectic holiday sea-

son to be on hand . . . Clint and Marie Pierce (Pierce Music) extend their holiday greetings from Brod- head, Wisconsin. Both have been pretty much involved in the pre -

Christmas rush. Marie says they're kind of looking forward to a couple of days off . . . Local operators are showing quite a bit of interest in the following new singles, according to John Jankowski of Radin Doctors: "In The Mood" by Ray Anthony (Ran -

wood), "Theme From Love Story" by

Henry Mancini (RCA) and "Flesh And

Blood" by Johnny Cash (Columbia).

CALIFORNIA CLIPPINGS Jimmy Wilkins of Portale Automatic Sales says that this Christmas has

been nothing short of sensational with flipper type pin balls leading the way to big sales for amusement game for the home. Jimmy told us that the home sales have been the best ever. "Snow Derby is living up to all ex-

pectations and they are presently awaiting a shipment of "Flying Circus" which is due to arrive at any mo-

ment. This game is where a plane flies through loops. And Jimmy calls it. "another exotic quarter machine". We hear through the grapevine that Rock -Ola will be coming out with something brand new within the next month or two. From what we are told no one knows for sure exactly what it will be, or if they do they're not telling. Another major event over there last week was the celebration of Bob

P.'s birthday. 39 you say? Bob Jr. is

on vacation and back working at the office. Brother Tom P. is also in town on leave from Fort Ord for the holi-

day's.
