Concept Note

Gandhi, a man of holistic personality, was a political activist, social reformer, and an ideologist in the history of India. This influential character needs no formal introduction actually, as related to his contribution to the socio-economic and political setting of the country. Even spiritualism found place in his thought in relation to Indian freedom struggle. Over the past decade and more, intellectuals and researchers are making studies on different ideas put forward by the legend. One interesting among a bunch of his ideas is his notion of ‘Swaraj’ in democracy. ‘Swaraj’, the concept, Gandhi implied is “Self-rule” and the term is a Vedic one. With this very basic connotation Gandhi conjoined the concept of Swaraj with multiple senses at a time. It is to him is national freedom; freedom from English rule and realizing the power of self-rule that comes from ‘within’ ensuring self-governance. On other occasions spiritual freedom of individuals dominated his mind; in other words, it is ‘self-rule’ in religious or metaphysical context. Therefore, he actually developed a vast domain of thought including socio-political and economic freedom of individuals through a process of self-realization or rule in a democratic setup. Democracy in Gandhian ideology is a stateless version which is dominated by village communities on voluntary basis of cooperation and in a non-violent way. Democracy thus associates with several features viz. non-violence, equality, decentralization of power and like this. With these various means a true Swaraj is possible. Gandhi thus aimed not to achieve political freedom of individuals rather to attain liberation and self-rule for them which is Swaraj in actual sense for him.

Objectives of the Seminar

1. To understand, evaluate and implement the Gandhian Model of Development and Conflict resolution in present context.

2. To spread the thought and philosophy of Gandhi among the young generation in particular and society at large.

3. To promote and carry on research in various aspects of Gandhian thought on scientific basis.
