Dear Friends...It is with honor that we write to you about the American Nurses Foundation (ANF). As a 501(c)3

organization, ANF gives nurses opportunities to explore warning signs of stress-related high bloodpressure; discover how diabetes can be monitored improving the life of someone who has diabetes;delve into the stages of infant development; examine alternatives to ending the obesity trend; enhance skills to communicate with populations from babies, to the elderly; teach prevention of foodborne illnesses; and test new methods to handle addictions, such as smoking.

But, that is not all. ANF also gives nurses the opportunity to uncover the value of caring; understand the effects of lifestyle habits on the human body; reach out to assist our own; improvequality of nursing care; and realize dreams in the nursing profession!

As the philanthropic arm of the American Nurses Association (ANA), ANF has given nurses opportunities to advance the profession, enhance the public health, and become nurse leaders, since 1955.Close to 1,000 nurses have taken that opportunity through our flagship program, the Nursing ResearchGrants Program. ANF is principally known for providing seed money to beginning nurse researchers, enabling them to begin their research careers and go on to receive national funding.ANF has awarded nearly $4 million to beginning and experienced nurse researchers over the past 54 years. The findings of these nurse researchers have made a substantialpositive impact on the lives that surround us. Many of the ANF Scholars havegone on to be leaders in nursing research who advance the scientific foundation forpractice, leaders in nursing, and leaders in their communities. That is why wethank all of our donors for supporting the Annual Fund and mission of ANF!

Financial commitment to ANF opens doors not only for nurse researchers, but for those nurses who dream of impacting lives by conducting their ownstudies that may lead to change in health care policies and procedures. Justthink of the lives that have been impacted by the work of ANF Scholars. PamelaMitchell, PhD, RN, FAAN, conducted original work on the effect of nurses’activities on intracranial pressure that led to a program of research on neurologicalresponses and neurobiology. Barbara F. Piper, DNSc, RN, AOCN, FAAN, aleading expert on fatigue and pain management, received her original ANFfunding for research on the effect of exercise on fatigue and mood states inwomen with breast cancer. She is a co-investigator on a $3.7 million studydesigned to translate the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s pain andevidence-based guidelines into practice through innovative ways to improve carefor patients with cancer. (Her instrument, the Piper Fatigue Scale was selectedfor use in a 10-site cancer clinical trial by Sigma -Tau Pharmaceuticals, Inc).Susan B. Meister, PhD, RN, FAAN, who has devoted her career to child healthpolicy, worked on innovations in the care of children with serious chronic illnesses and examined the contributions of cost-effectiveness analysis, decisionanalysis, and technology assessment in policy analysis.

ANF scholars such as these have created a legacy of leadership and havepaved the way for a new generation of nurse researchers and leaders. All tax-deductible contributions to the ANF Annual Fund, whether from individuals orcorporations, acknowledge the work of nurse researchers today, and those whowill follow in their footsteps tomorrow.

We thank our many donors who support ANF’s mission and ensure thatnurses always have the opportunity to personify the value of compassion; develop more competencies to advance the profession; improve communicationsto promote the public health and better serve patients; and learn techniques to aid the healing process. We ask everyone to grow or begin your financialsupport to the significant work of ANF today.

Marla J. Weston, PhD, RN, ANF Scholar“The ANF grant aided in my examination of variables that enable orconstrain control over nursing practice. My subsequent work hasfocused on concept analysis and review of instrumentation related toautonomy and control over nursing practice.” Weston’s current researchis a qualitative study examining the process for increasing nurse satisfactionand professional practice.

Weston’s nursing research career has led her to a career in nurse leadershipexemplified by her commitment to advancing the nursing profession. In 2009, Dr. Weston will begin her tenure as chief executive officer ofANA/ANF. Prior to joining the enterprise, Weston served in leadership positions including deputy chief officer of the Workforce Management andConsulting Office at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington,

D.C.; program director, workforce development, Office of Nursing Services, at the Department of Veterans Affairs, where she was responsible for improving the overall work environment for VA nurses, retaining and rewarding a skilled workforce, and improving the image of nursing while promoting nursing as an attractive career choice throughcollaboration with external partners; and executive director at the Arizona Nurses Association, a constituent memberassociation of ANA.

Contributions made to ANF impact lives daily through the researchand results of the ANF Scholars and through grant partnerships.

Vicki Hines-Martin, PhD, CNS, RN,FAAN, ANF Scholar

“The grant not only provided essential support for my doctoraldissertation, it also validated the importance of understandingcultural perspectives on how clients and their families viewhealth. Being an ANF grant recipient functioned as a foundationfor my program of research supported by such entities as NINRand NIDDK, my teaching with graduates and undergraduatestudents, publications and the development of my multiculturalhealth information web site, www.colorofhealth.org.”

Dr. Hines-Martin is pleased to see her career come full circle by supporting future researchers through her service on the NursingResearch Grants Reviewer committee (NRGR).

M. Katherine Hutchinson, PhD, RN, FAAN,ANF Scholar“One of my first research awards was a $3,500 grant from ANF for mystudy, ‘Sexual Risk Perceptions and Protective Strategies of Hispanic/LatinaYoung Women.’ That early funding was critical in launching my researchtrajectory and developing the track record needed for federal funding.”“Beyond my early ANF funding, it has been a privilege to be involvedwith ANF for a 3-year term as a NRRC member and to be able to playa role in promoting the development of the next generation of nurseresearchers.”Kathy Hutchinson’s research focuses on family influences of adolescent sexual risk and other risk behaviors and family-based risk reduction interventions. She is currently testing a mother-daughter HIV risk reductionintervention in Kingston, Jamaica.

Graham J. McDougall, Jr., PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN, ANF Scholar“The American Nurses Foundation has been an instrumental com-ponent of both funding and recognition for my 20-year programof cognitive aging research. My program of research is inextrica-bly bound to ANF and NIH. Funding through these entities pro-vide crucial sources of funding at critical points of developmentfor serious research in the nursing profession.”

In 1990, McDougall’s doctoral proposal, “Metamemory Knowledge asa Cue to Act in Older Adults”, received the Lucille Joel Fund Scholaraward. In 1991, as an assistant professor at Case Western ReserveUniversity’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, NIMH awarded him three years of additional funding to continue his research program.

At the beginning of his intervention research in 1996, the Germaine S. Krysan, RN, Scholar funded his study“Mnemonic Training to Improve Self-Efficacy in Cognitively Impaired Older Adults.” NINR continued to support his research as he developed the Cognitive Behavior Model of Everyday Memory. After moving to TheUniversity of Texas at Austin, the NIA funded a five-year R01 at $2.4 million to test the intervention model in alarge scale randomized clinical trial from 2001-2006.

McDougall also proudly serves on the ANF Nursing Research Review Committee (NRRC).

Patricia Flannery Pearce, MPH, PhD, FNP-BCANF Scholar“Receiving an ANF grant during my PhD studies was a powerful experience.Knowing the reviewers thought my proposed study had merit boosted my confidence as a PhD student to do the research. And the funding was sufficient to complete my initial study in exploring middle school adolescents’understanding of physical activity and working with the adolescents to design the Children’s Computerized Physical Activity Reporter (CCPAR).This foundational research catapulted me into successful intramural andextramural funding, which established psychometrics for the CCPAR, andfurthered our understanding of physical activity. Currently I am developinginterventional research related to physical activity and underserved middle-school adolescents, and am utilizing the CCPAR within that research.”

Pearce is honored to serve on the Nursing Research Review Committee (NRRC).

ANA and ANF partnered with the Robert WoodJohnson-funded Tobacco Free Nurses Initiative. As thelargest group of health care professionals, nurses havetremendous potential to effectively implement smokingcessation interventions and advance tobacco-use reduction goals proposed by Healthy People 2010.Nurses must be equipped to assist with smoking cessation, prevent tobacco-use, and promote strategies to

decrease exposure tosecond hand smoke.

ANA and ANF promote the mission ofTobacco Free Nurses tothe nation’s registered nurses through its constituent associations, members, and organizational affiliates. VisitTobaccoFreeNurses.org for more information about quitting!

BIOMONITORING STUDY:Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) invited ANA to

participate in a campaign called “Confronting Toxics.” ANA’sCenter for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH),Health Care Without Harm, and the State Alliance for FederalReform of Chemicals Policy (SAFER) states worked togetherwith PSR to conduct a biomonitoring project. The project deter-mined the body burden of a panel of eight chemicals by testingnurses and physicians for presence of the selected chemicals intheir bodies. The chemicals tested for included triclosan, bisphe-nol A, polybrominated diphenylethers, pthalates, pesticides, mer-cury, lead, and perfluorocarbons. The campaign highlights the chemicals that health care professionals are exposed to and assists with advocacy “chemical trespass” issues.

In total, nine nurses and 11physicians were selected to be participants in the study. Participants agreed to becomespokespersons on the issue of “body burden” and related chemical exposure issues. All participants received media training on chemical policy and chemical reform to preparethem for this role.

The available results of the project will be reported on May 18, 2009, at Clean Med 2009 in Chicago, Ill., during a pre-conference session entitled “Health Care Providers andEnvironmental Exposures: We Live and Learn.”

ANA’s recruitment of the nurses for this project was partially funded by the Beldon Fund.

STATE ADVOCACY MINI-GRANTS:ANA Government Affairs (GOVA) expanded its chemical

policy reform campaign by awarding mini grants to seven constituent member associations (CMAs): Ala., Conn., Del., N.J.,Ore., Penn., R.I., enabling them to hire a nurse dedicated tochemicals policy issues and related activities (for example, education, outreach, and briefings). GOVA staff offers monthlyconference calls as well as weekly group e-mail communications(opportunities, updates, and availability of advocacy tools) tofacilitate advancement of the work in the states.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF STATELEGISLATORS (NCSL)

GOVA staff interacted with several hundred legislators andtheir staff, including five nurse legislators (Ind., Md, Tenn., Texas,Utah), during the annual Legislative Summit for the NationalConference of State Legislators (NCSL) held in New Orleansfrom July 21 to 25, 2008. Safer toys legislation was a major focusof the ANA exhibit booth outreach and education at the meeting.

Additionally, ANA co-sponsored a breakfast briefing with theNational Conference of Environmental Legislators (NCEL),“Toxics in Toys.” The briefing provided an opportunity to engagelegislative leadership in a chemicals policy discussion and to garnersupport for the introduction of a 2009 NCSL policy statement andresolution on chemicals policy reform. As part of the briefing, onsite testing for evidence of toxic chemicals in toys was conducted.

INCREASE NURSE INVOLVEMENT INCHEMICALS POLICY REFORM

ANA has partnered with several professional nursing organiza-tions (e.g. Health Care Without Harm Nurses Working Group) andother environmental interest groups including the following: TheCampaign for Safe Cosmetics, the Environmental Health Fund,Earthjustice, OMB Watch, and Mercury Policy Project, in varioussign-on letters to campaigns/issues supported by the 2006 HODChemicals Policy and 2008 Food Safety resolutions (e.g. Campaignfor Safer Cosmetics, removal of rGBH from dairy products).GOVA has also discussed chemicals policy reform efforts duringpresentations at professional nurses association conferences (forexample, the Hispanic Nurses Association and Midwest AdvancedPractice Nursing Society annual conferences). ANA is currentlyparticipating in the development of a platform for safer chemicalspolicy in schools, and will engage the National Association ofSchool Nurses in the campaign.

COEH administers the RN No Harm speakers’ bureau listserv. Key environmental health invitations and announcementsare forwarded onto the listserv members.
