LISAMyDad is a great photographer and he has beenmyinspiration. I started at the Powerhouse lastSeptember, when I enrolled on a digital cameracourse and since Christmas, I have extendedmyknowledge and skills by following a digital imagingunit. I now feel somuchmore confident takingphotographs and I’ve really enjoyed seeing how theycan be improved, by using Photoshop. An additionalbonus has been that bothmy courses are accreditedand so I’ve gained certificates formywork!

CAROLI wanted to improve my English and Maths so that I could help my nieces andnephew. To start off I went to the Powerhouse in Llanedeyrn. It was because therewere more options that I decided to come to the Friary Centre. When you walk intothe Friary Centre you are greeted with friendly reception staff. I like coming to theclass because you have an assessment to see what level you are. Therefore theteaching suits each learner’s ability. I have become a good learner. I feel verycomfortable here. I have improved myMaths and English. My ambition is tobecome amidwife.

MICHAELWhen I started in the Friary I was very old but determined to learn something ofuse and English was one of mymain objectives, as I could not spell a thing. Soto make long story short, I have within two years improved to G.C.S.E. standardand thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I have improved so much I can’t believemyself plus I have got to the equivalent in maths or should I say arithmetic. Ihave to say it is all down to the teachers in the Friary College as without theirhelp I would not have got that far. So a big thank you to the teachers.

Thecourses specifically designed for learners withmental health problems, provided a ‘safe’starting point forme to begin to participate inlearning and life in general and venture out ofmy house! I have completed a number ofcourses including CardMaking and CreativeWriting. I’m now in themiddle ofmy secondchildren’s novel and am looking into sellingmycards on the internet and in craft fairs. CHRISTINE

Hi,my name is Christine. Ihad an abscess on the brainin Christmas 2007, whichhas leftmewith numerousproblems. I have poormemory and concentration.I thought I had losteverything after the injury. Ididn’t even rememberwhat a keyboardwas or a Computer Screen. As part ofmy rehabilitation I started on a Beginners Computercoursewith DART and soon progressed onto CLAiT.Mytutor has been very supportive. These courses havedefinitely helpedme become confident andmyconcentration levels have improved. I havemy ownlaptop and I can nowdo on-line banking, e-shoppingand talk to friends on a social website. I amhaving agreat time learning andmeeting newpeople andmaking friends. I would recommend to everyonewhohas had a brain injury, to have a go, recovery won’thappened immediately, but it will happen, if yougive it time.

FEREIDA

I had just left school withoutany qualificationswhen Istartedmy learning journey atSevern RoadNeighbourhoodLearningCentre in 2010. Istarted by taking an ICTcourse (CLAIT) and thenfoundout about the English classes at the centrethrough a friend. The teacherwas amazing; Iworked hard and tookmyEnglishGCSE andgot agrade B - Iwas only expecting a gradeD so themorning I foundout that I had achieved a gradeB Iwas dancing around the kitchen! I then heard thata newGCSEmaths coursewas starting so I joinedthat andwill be takingmyexam in June; I then planto start a sociology degree in Septemberwith theOpenUniversity. I wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’tfor the centre; coming here has opened loads ofdoors formeandgivenmeopportunities that haveinspiredme to dobigger andbetter things.

PATI joined Helen LloydJones’ yoga class 18months ago becausemy joints were gettingvery stiff and I thoughtit might help to loosenthem up. I was at a point where it was affecting my day today life, and especially my leisure activities.

When I joined, the tutor asked me to complete a shorthealth questionnaire to determine if I had any problemsthat she would need to know about. One of the questionswas about back problems, which applied to me. Helendiscussed this with me and she was able to pinpoint theproblem area. Since starting yoga, I haven’t needed to seeanyone about my back problems!

Helen tailored my yoga with my problem in mind, as shedoes for each individual student and I can’t believe thedifference the class has made to my back and flexibility ofmy joints. Another bonus is the class is so enjoyable!Joining the class at Radyr was definitely one of those littlelife changing decisions!

DANIELIn January 2011 I enrolled at thePowerhouseNLC on a basic computercourse. I hope that by improvingmy ITskills, I will improvemy career prospectsandmaybe eventually I will be able to geta job that is based in an office. I left schoolwith very few IT skills, but since coming tothe Powerhouse I have completed anaccredited computer course, and lastAutumn I enrolled on a EuropeanComputer Driving Licence. I feelmoreconfident about using the computer for allsorts of things and I feel that I’m takingpositive steps to improvemy skillsandmy prospects.

ANDREAAND KARLI have been studyingcomputers for 11 years– I started with CLAIT,moved on to ECDL,completed that andam now studying ECDL Advanced. I like a challenge! I amlearning at my own pace, supported by an excellent tutor,Cathy who is very patient and who has a good sense ofhumour. I amDeaf and partially sighted but with thesupport of my Communication Support Worker, Karl (who isalso in the picture) I am able tomake good progress…he isvital to my progress. It is a bonus that Karl has an IT degreeso he understands the work I am doing! I enjoy the contentof the course – the Spreadsheets module is my favourite – Iam now good at working out budgets linked withmoneyand look forward to coming to class each week.
