SUSTAINABLE SOCIETIES

Programme organizer: Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

Moderator: Professor Rolee Aranya, Vice Dean, Faculty of Architecture and Design, NTNU

India has over the last decade made a strong commitment for transition toward a Smart Sustainable

Society, through national missions such as the Smart Cities Mission, Clean India Campaign, National

Water Mission and the National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency. Academics, policy makers,

research institutions and industry representatives represent key stakeholders along with citizens and

civil society agencies in a quadruple helix model for innovation and knowledge development for a

transition to a smart sustainable society. The seminar takes up four key areas to showcase ongoing

cooperation and explore future collaborations among Indian and Norwegian Institutions. It brings to

the table these stakeholders to discuss quadruple helix models for a joint commitment to transition

to a Smart Sustainable Society in India and in Norway.

RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ENERGY SYSTEMS

Programme organizer: Smart Innovation Norway (SIN)

Moderator: Dieter Hirdes, Smart Innovation Norway

With a target of 227 GW of renewable capacity by 2025, India has emerged as one of the world’s most

attractive destinations for RE investments. In addition, India’s smart grid mission is fast gaining

momentum with new opportunities in transmission, distribution and digitization of energy assets.

However, renewable energy and digitization of electricity grids are emerging technologies with both

basic and applied research resulting in innovative products, reducing economics and wider application

across the sector.

Norway has been a pioneer in global research and, in particular, in the domain of clean energy. This is

evident by the fact that Norway today generates 99,9% of its electricity (33 GW grid size) through clean

energy and boasts of one of the most advanced electric grids across the world. Norway is also well

recognized as the battery of Europe for its contribution towards hydropower generation. Norwegian

researchers and industry work very closely thus reducing the time and cost in the commercialization

of emerging and new technologies. Norwegian research is well known for a focused approach on public

issues and in-process producing innovative solutions leading to business success. Lately, there has

been a surge in collaboration between Indian and Norwegian academia and research institutions and

Norwegian researchers have found high value in collaborating with leading Indian technological and

business institutions. Norwegian researchers and spin-offs are keen to further engage with Indian

Industry for further applied research and commercialization.
