A NEW COMPANY TO MANAGE

PROSUB

A new company was formed

to make the Brazilian submarine

program feasible: Itaguaí

Construções Navais (ICN), the result

of a partnership between DCNS and

Odebrecht.

The union was formed with the

participation of the Brazilian Navy,

which holds golden share over

issues associated with the company’s

operations. ICN will be responsible

for building the five submarines.

The site chosen for the program

installations was Madeira Island, located

in the municipality of Itaguaí in the

metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.

According to the ICN timeline, the

inauguration of the Metal Structure

Manufacturing Unit (UFEM) will take

place in November 2012, the conclusion

of the shipyard is scheduled for 2014

and the naval base should be ready six

months later.

During the construction work,

PROSUB will generate more than

9,000 direct job opportunities

and 27,000 indirect ones. For the

submarine construction period,

some 2,000 direct and 8,000 indirect

permanent job opportunities should

be created in the naval military

construction area.

A ceremony held on

August 18 marked the

inauguration of the Hertha

Odebrecht Library at the

Organization’s head office

in Salvador, Bahia.

During the event, Hebe

Meyer, Adviser to the

Presidency of the Odebrecht

Foundation Board of

Trustees, presented the

new cultural space to the

members of the Odebrecht

S.A. Board of Directors and

the three generations of

the Odebrecht family that

succeeded one another as

the Organization’s leaders,

During the inauguration ceremony, Hebe Meyer presents the new space to members of the Odebrecht S.A. Board of Directors and Organization leaders

The library’s name is

a tribute to Norberto

Odebrecht’s mother.

Hertha Odebrecht played

an important role in

the education of the

Organization’s founder,

and dedicated to a type of

learning for her children

based on principles and

values, she contributed

decisively to establishing

what would come to be

the bases of Odebrecht

Entrepreneurial Technology

(TEO) in the future.

The new library emerged

as a result of the donation

of Norberto Odebrecht’s

personal archive and also

that from Members of

the Organization. It also

features a set of permanent

works, consisting of books,

magazines, catalogs,

almanacs and other

publications from different

areas, in addition to a space

for temporary thematic

exhibits.

The first topic, chosen

for the inauguration,

narrates the life of Hertha

Odebrecht and the

places she lived. In one

of the published quotes,

Norberto Odebrecht

explains his family values:

“At home, under the

leadership of my mother,

Hertha Odebrecht, we

lived in an educational

and religious environment

marked by trust. From very

early on, with discipline

and organization, my

sisters and I were prepared

for life and for work. The

teachings always prompted

us to seek the truth and

what was right and best for

everyone.”

SPACE DIRECTED AT THE

PUBLIC

Designed from a

pragmatic viewpoint, in

which the book is not

treated merely as the

object in a collection, but

rather as an instrument

designed for man and

society, the Hertha

Odebrecht Library is part

of the Odebrecht Cultural

Center, also located at the

Organization’s head office.

The dynamic environment

is designed for social-

cultural events focused

on education – a bridge

between people and

knowledge.

On August 30, the library

hosted its first event

open to the public. The

professor Mabel Velloso

presented the lecture

“Family Education for Moral

Values” for members of the

head office, members of

the Study and Educational

Advisory Center (CEAP) and

other guests.

extremely rare happened. The

needle caught a blood vessel

is the way that Mario Cravo

artists, opens the book Exu

yet another work of reference

to join Odebrecht’s archive of

cultural publications.

about his life and work.

The site chosen for the

launch ceremony was

decorated with Cravo Jr.’s work.

After displaying the

FROM THE MODERN

ARTIST’S HANDS

In his studio, located in the

Pituaçu Metropolitan Park

in Salvador, Mario Cravo Jr.

gives shape to unique works

of art that are part of the very

identity of Bahia’s capital.

The artist, who has been

producing his works since

1940, received from writer

Jorge Amado the nickname

“Exu’s Blacksmith:” the

messenger who works

with iron, bronze and other

materials by melting them,

transforming them into art

and placing them once again

into movement.

His historical sculptures

include Cruz Caída (“Fallen

Cross”) in Pelourinho, and Cristo

Crucificado (“Crucified Christ”),

located at a high point in the

city of Vitória da Conquista in

Bahia’s Southwestern region.

The marks of the modern artist

include the sculptures of Exus –

inspired in the African Orixá of

communication that represents

“movement” –, sculpted in

metal, rubber and wood.

“First, ‘I flirt’ with the piece.

Some 700 people attended the launch of the book and video documentary that describe the life and work of the modern artist

Page 17: ON 265 ing5

17odebrechtnoticias.com.br / no. 265 / september 2011

With the approximation,

I begin to touch the work

and things start happening.

I like to work with two or

three materials at once. I

temporarily need to renew my

relationship with them. I think

that each one has a soul,” said

the artist. He points out that

his latest passion is graffiti, the

“the soft brother of diamond

carbon.”

Also known as the

“Poet of Materials,” Cravo

rigorously puts into practice

the motto that “nothing is

lost.” According to him, all

materials can be recycled

and transformed into art.

“I use rubber, wood, metals

and plastics to build my

structures, for example. I

acquire this content with

suppliers from Salvador, such

as junkyards. I try to maintain

an experimental technique

that gives me a sensorial

construction of the work,” he

explains.

EXU ILUMINADO

The idea for Exu

Iluminado was born out of

an initiative by filmmaker

André Luiz Oliveira, who

wanted to complete a

trilogy about the modern

artist. Oliveira had already

produced two movies

about Mario Cravo Jr.:

A Fonte (“The Source”)

during the 1970s, and

O Cristo de Vitória da

Conquista (“Christ of the

Victory of Conquest”) in

the 1980s.

Péricles Palmeira,

from the film company

Berimbau Filmes, was the

producer of the project,

which also involved a

partnership with the

artist’s daughter, Kadi

Cravo, responsible for the

research coordination,

and Mario Cravo Neto, an

internationally recognized

photographer, who

passed away during the

elaboration of the book

and video and is also

honored in the work.

With the death of Cravo

Neto, his son Cristian

Cravo joined the group to

conclude the work.

The book, produced by

Versal Editores, features

quotes by Brazilian artists

such as Carybé, Jorge

Amado, Ildásio Tavares

and Jorge Valladares, as

well as a large archive

of photos, engravings,

sketches and paintings.

The publication also

includes a timeline with a

biography on the sculptor,

contextualizing the reader

in the space and period

in which the events took

place, and describing his

interaction with the world,

The name of the book was based on the name author Jorge Amado gave to Cravo: “Exu’s Blacksmith,” the Messenger who works with iron, bronze and other materials by melting them, transforming them into art and placing them once again into movement

his family and the city

and his vision, ideas and

choices.

“We felt that it was

a time to honor Mario

Cravo Jr., one of the

greatest artists of

Bahia and Brazil,” said

Márcio Polidoro, the

professional responsible

for Communication at

Odebrecht, during the

launch ceremony for the

project.

of the crowd, someone says: “The

Zambiapunga group is heading

this way!” Masked men, coming

from three Bahia municipalities –

Nilo Peçanha, Cairu and Taperoá

– joined together for a major

celebration: the meeting of

Zâmbias. There are hundreds of

said Master Deco, responsible for

the Taperoá group.

The cultural expression is

part of the programming for

the Cultural Parade, an event

designed to celebrate the

Historical Heritage and Folklore

Days in the Bahia Southern

Lowlands on August 17 and

22, respectively. The action

was coordinated by Bahia

Southern Lowlands Sustainable

Development Institute (IDES), one

of the institutions supported by

the Odebrecht Foundation, and

involved the entire region, which

also includes the municipalities

of Maraú, Presidente Tancredo

Neves, Ibirapitanga, Camamu,

Piraí do Norte, Igrapiúna, Ituberá

and Valença.

The initiative was designed to

raise the communities’ awareness

as to the importance of material

and immaterial heritage and the

preservation of cultural identity.

“Recognizing the expressions

and natural wealth of our region

is essential, since it reinforces

the relationship between the

past and present,” said Elder do

Rosário, a student of the Training

Course in Agroforest Systems

held at the Agroforest Family

Home.

For two days, presentations,

seminars, walks, theater

and conversations with the

community were the highlights.

The activities were supported

by the city governments,

Municipal Departments of

Culture, Education, Social Action,

Tourism, Agriculture, Sports and

Communication, local teaching

units, the Industry Social Service

(SESI) - Valença and the Bahia

Artistic and Cultural Heritage

Institute (IPAC). “The celebration

indicates to us that a society’s

soul is found in its culture and

that every citizenship process

takes place through social living,”

said Liliana Leite, Executive

Director of IDES. “I congratulate

the entire team involved in

promoting this cause.”

DAYS OF CELEBRATIONS

The event began in Maraú,

where, on the morning of

August 17, the party earned

new dimensions with Mandu,

a local performance group,

which was accompanied by the

Lira da Conceição Philharmonic

Orchestra. In Presidente

Tancredo Neves, residents began

Page 22: ON 265 ing5

their activities with a “Folkloric

Breakfast,” consisting of foods

made from manioc, such as

cookies and the traditional beiju.

Organizers of the project “I Love

Being a Child” livened up the

younger public from Ibirapitanga

and, in Camamu, a crowd

participated in a guided tour to

the Historical Site.

At the start of the afternoon,

Piraí do Norte hosted the Heritage

Education Seminar, with lectures

on the municipality’s history and

its cultural wealth, in addition

to presentations of the musical

genres Terno de Reis and Samba

de Roda. Finally, Igrapiúna sparked

the interest of the local youth

with the auditorium program

Young Art, which promoted

debates on heritage and social

vulnerability. “These actions

help build citizenship, especially

among youth,” said Gilson Santos,

Principal of the Luís Rogério de

Souza State High School, located

in Camamu.

Cairu began the programming

for the second day with the Gosto

de Álcool (“Taste of Alcohol”)

Philharmonic Orchestra, which

invited the community to dance

and sing traditional Carnival songs

and walk along the city’s historical

streets. “Even the cobblestones

themselves showed the culture

of the municipality of Cairu,”

said Antônio Isaías do Rosário

Ribeiro, Secretary of Culture. In

Ituberá, participants visit the Jesuit

Walking Trail, which dates back

to 1759. Interesting facts and

discussions were part of the walk.

Taperoá and Valença closed the

Cultural Parade with seminars and

educational walks.

“Valuing our history strengthens

us to consolidate the sustainable

development of a people who

know how to recognize the past to

construct the future,” said Pedrina

Belém do Rosário, communication

coordinator at IDES and a direct

supporter of the event.

The Cultural Parade is an event

on the calendar of activities

promoted by institutions

associated with the Bahia

Southern Lowlands Environmental

Protection Area Mosaic Integrated

and Sustainable Development

Program (PDIS). The idea is to

build the relationship between the

different PDIS communities and

communicate the main results

and challenges. This year, there

will also be celebrations for Tree

Day, Children’s Day and Black

Awareness Day.

Braskem signed an agreement with

BASF to supply propane and soda for

the global scale production of acrylic

acid, butyl acrylic and superabsorbent

polymers (SAP) in Brazil. BASF will

invest over US$ 750 million in the

construction of factories in the

Camaçari Pole in Bahia, which will

be the first to produce acrylic acid

and SAP in the country and South

America. Braskem plans to invest

some R$ 30 million in the project.

Propane will be the main raw material

for the production of the acrylic acid,

used in paints, the textile industry

and in the mining sector, as well as

butyl acrylate, a raw material for the

textile industry and civil construction,

as well as superabsorbent polymers,

used to produce diapers, for water

treatments and oil extraction, among

other applications.

Through the agreement, the product

will be consumed in the domestic

market. Furthermore, the project will

make use of the high technological

content belonging to BASF, helping

boost the competitiveness of the

national sectors that manufacture

diapers, paints, textiles and products

for civil construction in the country.

“The agreement will maximize the

potential benefits for the entire

acrylic acid production chain due to

the project’s production capacity and

size of the investment,” said Carlos

Fadigas, Business Leader at Braskem.

“It will also promote the emergence

of a new cycle of investments in

the Camaçari Pole, attracting new

manufacturing companies to Bahia,”

he said.

“The investment reinforces our local

and global leadership in the acrylic

value chain, guaranteeing the supply

of our products to consumers from

the region and contributing toward

the country’s development,” said

Alfred Hackenberger, president of

BASF South America.

With estimates for installation still

this year, the project is promoting

the creation of an Acrylic Complex

in the Camaçari Pole and is set to

start operating in 2014. During the

construction work, some 1,000 direct

jobs will be created.
