It’s cold and rainy now, but soon it will be summer and we’ll meet at the 2011 OMTA Conference where we’ll enjoy warm, sunny days filled with fascinating talks and fantastic music in the company of our friends and colleagues. What could be better?

After last year’s conference, many members requested that we partner once again with Portland Piano International (PPI) and we are pleased to be able to do so. For the pedagogy sessions, PPI Artistic Director, Harold Gray is bringing Dennis Alexander, an artist who will be of interest to OMTA mem-bers. Gray is always on the lookout for artists to bring to his series and he says he has heard many wonder-ful things about Alexander.

All members will receive registration packets and detailed conference information in the mail by early March. However, a brief schedule is shown below so that you can begin planning. All events will take place at the Forestry Center in Portland, unless otherwise noted.

President’s Corner

Dear Colleagues,

I send happy mid-winter greetings to all of you as I look out the window at the warm and cheering sunshine. What a blessing to live in Oregon! I count among my blessings the opportunity to know and work for all of our OMTA members.

Thank you to all who put in tireless hours for all OMTA activities. Our Ensem-ble Festival was a great success and Jr. Bach Festival is fast approaching. Congratula-tions to students and teachers who will be participating in the Final Event on March 6 in Hood River, and congratulations, also, to all other students who participated along the way and experienced the wonders of Baroque music.

An important administrative note: on February 8, we will be moving our OMTA office to Portland. Our new administra-tive assistant, Robin Power, will assist you with your needs for materials and commu-nications. I will soon send more detailed information to each of you. We are working for a seamless transition and I will formally introduce you to Robin in the next Music News edition.

Don’t forget to check out the MTNA National Conference at www.MTNA.org. Joan Gathercoal will be honored as MTNA

Foundation Fellow at the Gala. If you plan to attend, please let me know. I have reserved tables for the Oregon contingent at the Gala. Congratulations, Joan!!

Please remember that Music News will now be published monthly. What a fine opportunity for us to share items from all of our members. If you’ve attended a workshop, read an inspiring book, had an epiphany at a lesson—please write an item for publication in the newsletter. We all want to hear from you all! Send your articles to Linda Hansen. Her information is listed in this edition of Music News.

Warm regards,Fern L. McArthur, NCTMPresident, OMTA

State News MTNA Student Competitions

The NW Division Competition was hosted by Boise State University January 14–16. OMTA members Marilyn Reischke, Salem, and Jean Hinkle, Roseberg, were division coordinators and helped facilitate the event.

Oregon was well-represented in the competition, with participants in piano, strings, voice, and winds. Congratulations to all students who participated, and especially to the winners, alternates and honorable mentions listed below. Their parents, teach-ers, and all of OMTA are proud of them!

Winners will go on to compete at the National MTNA Competition in Milwau-kee, Wisconsin this March.

Best of luck to them!

State News Opportunity for OMTA Piano Students

The second annual In Good Hands concert will be held at the Portland Piano Festival In-ternational in July, 2011. This concert (July 13 or 14) will feature music, levels 6–10, written by composers who are members of Cascadia, the local chapter of The National Association of Composers, USA. The per-formers will be students of OMTA teachers.

A call for scores has gone out to Cas-cadia composers asking for solo, duet, or trio piano music in levels 6–10. The call included the following informational guide:

Examples of music in level 6Samuel Barber: Gradus I: Nos. 7, 14, 17

Bartok: Mikrokosmos book 3: # 82, 83, 85, 87, 100

Bernstein: For Susanna Kyle

Jan Mittelstaedt, NCTMSvoboda: Children’s Treasure Box, Book 3 #44, #48

The other levels are in the process of being updated. However, they gradually get harder. The Cat and the Mouse (Copland) is a great favorite in level 10 as are the Ger-shwin Preludes. Music much harder than these examples is rarely used by pre college students. Most of the students will be in Middle or High School.

Music under 4 minutes in length will be given first preference.

This performance is open to students in any area of the state who are studying with OMTA teachers. Until we see how many teachers/students are interested, we will limit the number of students to one per teacher (except if the teacher programs a duet or trio).

There will be two meetings for teach-ers to select music for their students. It is assumed that teachers will select a student who is diligent, is interested in learning new music, and is an excellent performer. If a teacher lives outside of Portland and will not be able to attend either meeting, they may send me information about the stu-dent’s level, age, and contemporary music recently studied (and enjoyed.) The teach-ers at the meetings will then select a piece for the student. The meetings will be on Sunday, March 6 at 3:00 p.m. and Monday, March 7 at 10:00 a.m. at 4485 NW 187th Ave., Portland 97229 (my studio).

Please contact me if you are interested in having a student participate in the PPI con-cert. Let me know whether or not you will attend one of the meetings, the level of your student, and whether you will be interested in a solo, a duet, or a trio. If you have a sec-ond student who would like to play, please add her/his name in case we have room.

This is a great opportunity for students, teachers, and composers. Last year’s recital was a huge success. I hope to hear from you.

District News Linn-Benton

Joy ByersDistrict President

Greetings from the Linn-Benton District! Dr. Susan Chan just gave our district a won-derful presentation on January 25, entitled, “An East-West Encounter with Contem-porary Chinese Piano Music.” This was a multi-media presentation, incorporating beautiful Asian art. The compositions that she performed included works by Doming Lam, Tan Dun, and Alexina Louie. I would definitely recommend this presentation to other districts.

Dr. Chan is also giving our district a lecture and master class on Impressionist compos-ers on April 30 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 4515 West Hills Road in Corvallis. The lecture begins at 10:00 a.m., and the master class will begin at 11:00 a.m. Other districts are invited to attend.

PIANO SYLLABUS with Virginia Hawley BuhnA Professional Course of Study on DVD

The OMTA Piano Syllabus is an outline of study de-signed to provide students with a thorough background in keyboard skills, musical understanding and perfor-mance ability. The DVDs offer ideas and methods for implementing the syllabus as a basis for learning and performance.

The original VCRs were developed by Virginia Buhn in 1996 and have sold more than 1,200 copies. The new DVDs follow the course outline of the OMTA Syllabus Book and are designed to help piano teachers prepare students for a successful evaluation.

JAZZ PIANO SYLLABUS with Gary RuppertA Professional Course of Study on DVD

The OMTA Jazz Piano Syllabus was developed by Gary Ruppert in the mid 1980s. A revision, done in the summer of 2003, was based on feedback received from teachers, students, and adjudicators who used the first version. Their comments and encouragement have been of inestimable value

This DVD is meant to help teachers and their stu-dents navigate the various levels of the Jazz Syllabus and discover the joys of studying jazz piano.
