ACADEMICS:

Academics remain our priority.

• The outbreak of the Corona Virus is causing a noticeable restriction on academic time. Therefore alternative measures had to be put in place.

• We will be communicating with the Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners via the Paul Roos website. • Grade 10 to 12 learners will receive communication via Google Classroom and/or notes that have been

handed to them. We will be starting with the electronic academic communication on 31 March.• Leerders moet besef dat goeie selfdissipline die suksesvolle afhandeling van hulle akademiese program

FROM THE RECTOR’S DESKBEHEERLIGGAAMWe congratulate our two newly-elected Governing Body members: Mr Johan van der Merwe and Mr Rudi Jansen. Ons nuutverkose voorsitter is mnr. Roelou Slabbert.

Dit was ‘n baie besige en suksesvolle eerste kwartaal. Paul Roosers het hierdie kwartaal op verskeie vlakke groot suksesse behaal.

Ek wil ouers bedank vir hul ondersteuning gedurende die somersportseisoen en veral diegene wat saam met spanne gereis het. Ons is bewus dat die toere ekstra finansiële druk op ons ouers plaas, maar ons is dankbaar dat ons ouers die opofferings maak sodat hul seuns die geleentheid gebied kan word.

The winter season is one that calls for great commitment and all involved must consider the interest of the school and the team. Letasseblief daarop dat elke naweek in die wintersport-seisoen wedstryde gespeel word. Ons vra dus dat ouers asseblief nie reëlings trefom vir naweke weg te gaan nie.

Dokters- en tandartsafsprake asook ekstra lesse moet asseblief nie gereël word vir oefendae/oefentye nie. Dit is onregverdig teenoordie afrigter en ander spanlede.

VANUIT DIE REKTORSKANTOORSPORTBYWONINGWe strongly encourage the entire school’s involvement at our Derby Days, even those that are played at other schools. This will further strengthen the Paul Roos school spirit and foster a feeling of unity among all Paul Roosers. NETHEID EN VOORKOMSOns benodig die ondersteuning van ALLE ouers om die netheid en Paul Roos-trots te alle tye te verseker. Op 14 April sal daar ‘n netheidsinspeksie wees wat skoolsakke insluit. Leerders se hare moet ook op die eerste dag van die nuwe kwartaal volgens haarreëlskorrek gesny wees. Senior leerders moet ook sorg dat hulle elke dag skoon geskeer is.

The major areas of concern at the moment are:

* learners who use earphones to and from school, and* incorrect book bags and sports bags are still being used.

Ons versoek ouers om ons te ondersteun en sodoende te verseker dat die Paul Rooser altyd ‘n jongman is waarop ons almal trots is.

FROM THE RECTOR’S OFFICEVORDERINGSVERSLAEPaul Roosers het hul kwartaal- en vorderingsverslae ontvang. Ons wens diegene wat goed presteer het of na die beste van hul vermoë presteer het, geluk. Ons vertrou dat die ander stappe sal neem vir beter uitslae volgende kwartaal. Die behaalde punt in elke vak mag dalk hoër wees as wat dit in Junie sal wees omdat slegs ‘n klein gedeelte van die werk nou getoets is. The mark indicated in eachsubject is based on a number of tests and assignments that were completed during the first term.

PROJEKTEOns maak goeie vordering met die implementering van die Paul Roos-kampus-meesterplan. Ek wil graag beheerliggaamlid, mnr. Francois Malan, voorsitter van die Infrastruktuurkomitee, bedank vir die ongelooflike harde werk en waardevolle insette. Mnr. Roelou Slabbert, in beheer van Instandhouding, doen ongelooflike werk om ons kampus se standaard te verhoog.

Fase 3 gaan voort en behels die opgradering van die oorblywende 45 kamers in Nova. Die oorblywende kamers word een vir eenopgradeer soos fondse beskikbaar raak. Daar is gedurende die eerste kwartaal van 2020 reeds vier kamers in Nova oorgedoen. Ons het reeds fondse om die volgende 10 kamers ook te doen. Groot dank aan almal wat finansieel bygedra het. We established a third IT Centre to accommodate more learners offering Computer Applications Technology as a subject. We are grateful to the Old Boys’ Committee who assisted us financially with this project.

In the process the library had to be closed with the intent to relocate it to a more accessible position and with a new focus.

Die opgradering van die Markötter krieketfasiliteit by Volkskombuis met plaveisel en bankies onder die bome en die aanplant van gras, is ‘n reuse sukses.

Op die dag (Maandag 2 Maart) van ons 154ste verjaardagvieringe, het ons amptelik blouplaakstatus van die Stellenbosch Erfenisstigtingontvang. ‘n Spesiale geleentheid is gereël vir die onthulling van die Stellenbosch Erfenis Stigting Blou Plaak op ons drie pragtigehistoriese geboue:Die Hoofgebou, Die Japie Krigesaal enDie Laerskool Paul Roos-gebou, alom bekend as die LPR.

EUROPEAN EXCHANGE

Paul Roos believes in the value of extending networks, interaction and mutual learning from groups outside its own school environment. The school has been running a foreign exchange programme with various European schools, every alternate year. Twenty

of our learners have just successfully hosted a group of 22 Dutch learners, accompanied by three educators. In the programme which runs over 14 days, our visitors could see Table Mountain, one of the new 7 wonders of nature, the penguins at Boulders Beach, Cape Point, Kirstenbosch and experience a trip to the southern coast of the Western Cape. The Dutch learners gave presentations to Paul

Roos learners and thereby established valuable understanding and perspective among people and continents.

POOLSE UITRUIL'n Groepie leerders van LOTE-Gimnasium vanuit Cieszyn in Pole het hulle mede Duits-leerders in Paul Roos hierdie kwartaal vir

die vyfde keer besoek. Hierdie akademiese skakeling het sy oorsprong in 2008 toe die twee Duits leerkragte, me Justyna Sobota

en me Alet Conradie, tydens 'n Goethe Instituut opleidingskursus in München ontmoet het.

Vir die eerste vier jaar was die kontak virtueel op die Moodle leerplatform waar gesamentlike projekte en take opgelaai is. In

2009 en 2011 het die twee groepe mekaar tydens die tweejaarlikse Duitse studietoer in Wene, Oostenryk ontmoet en daar 'n

paar dae saam Duitse projekte aangepak. Die droom het gegroei en in 2012 het me. Sobota ons die eerste keer in Stellenbosch

besoek.

Die groepie bestaan elke keer uit slegs 12 leerders om die akademiese aspek sinvol te kan inpas binne die Duitse leerplanne.

Met elke besoek word daar vooraf 'n projek beplan en die leerders woon soggens klas by en werk saam aan die onderskeie

opdragte (grade 10, 11 en 12). Aan die einde van die twee weke word die projekte formeel in die klas aangebied en bepunt.

Alle groepe is gemeng (SA en PL) en die personeel word uitgenooi om die aanbiedings by te woon.

Vanjaar se onderwerpe was: Graad 10 - Jongmense uit SA en Pole: verskille en ooreenkomste

Graad 11: Webquest oor Duitse uitvindsels.

Graad 12: Webquest oor uitsonderlike woonhuise in die wêreld (in Pole en in Suid-Afrika deel van matriekleerplan)

It has been a busy term for Societas as river cleaning, beach clean-up and our Becoming Kids mentorship programmes afforded our learners the opportunity to contribute to their community. Paul Roos learners made quite an impact when they attended the beach clean-up in Strand on 7 March as they were able to pick up over 1200 cigarette butts during a 2-hour clean-up session.

Hierdie kwartaal was ook baie spesiaal, want ons het 'n nuwe projek in vennootskap met SANParke Ereveldwagters se Boland-streek geloods. Paul Roosers het lootjies verkoop en alle ingesamelde fondse word deur PRG Societas se projekte, wat fokus op die bewaring van die omgewing naby ons skool en die SANParkeEreveldwagters se Boland-streek se omgewingsopvoedingsprojek in die Tankwa Karoo Nasionale Park, gedeel. Paul Roos het meer as R88 000 ingesamel en Ronél Botha, ma van Andrew Botha in Graad 8, is die wenner van 7 nagte vir 6 by Shimuwini Bosveldkamp in die Kruger-Wildtuin! Baie dankie aan almal wat bygedra het tot hierdie opwindende projek.

TONEELPaul Roos Gimnasium pak weer twee toneelstukke aan en oefen reeds hard. Die twee stukke hierdie jaar is SKRUM onder leiding van mnr. JH Opperman en Djerassiek Paak Ses onder dr. Danie Stander.

PRG Toneel verwelkom ook oud-skolier en oud-regisseur, mnr. Brink Nelson, terug as hulpregisseur vir SKRUM.

Die eerste kwartaal van 2020 het afgeskop met streng kooroudisies om die huidige 120 koorlede vas te stel. Die koor het reeds op 21-23 Februarie 'n kamp gehad by Mizpah, Grabouw en daar is hard gewerk aan die aanleer van musiek virATKV Applous wat in Mei plaasvind en die PRG AtterburyMusiekfees wat in Augustus plaasvind.

The PRG drum core has gained immense popularity and momentum amongst learners of all ages. Therefore, the motto for this year is “2020 is 20Plenty”. In the first term of this year, the group has grown from twelve to almost thirty members. Paul Roos Gymnasium has made it possible to invest into extra equipment, allowing the drum core to grow to this extent.

Our first big training session for 2020 was the drum core camp held at PRG on 8 and 9 February. The camp enabled the members to prepare thoroughly for the school’s annual Prestige athletics. Our first official performance as a group was on 12 February at the Dal Josaphat stadium in Paarl. The performance was very exciting and full of energy. On 11 March the sectional leaders of the drum core supported the cheerleaders at the rugby evening at Newlands stadium.

Die Paul Roos SanggroepDie sanggroep is tans hard aan die oefen vir die 15de Internationale Bad Ilsch Interkultur-Koorkompetisie. Hulle vlieg op die 24ste April naOostenryk. Hulle is ook gevra om by die opening van hierdiekompetisie te sing, waar slegs een koor gekies word. Hulle neem deelin twee van die katgorieë, Folklore en Youth Choirs. Hulle het reeds twee oefenkampe die jaar gehad om voor te berei.Optredes die jaar sluit in Bloemhof se jaarlikse Gr 12 Pa-en-Dogter-ete. (Foto’s aangeheg)

PRG BAND (aka Maroon Mafia) Die PRG band had multiple performances this term after a successful practice-camp in February. Performances included the Valentine’s Movie evening. The Band also reached the finals in the High School Band Slam, which took place on 13 March at the V&A Waterfront.

Little Shop of HorrorsPaul Roos is performing the famous musical Little Shop of Horrors. This production was scheduled to take place during the last week of the first term. The musical, based on the movie of the same name, is a funny witty send-up of B-grade science fiction movies. The cast includes Ronin Nel, Ghia Hough (Bloemhof) Mr Cezarre Strydom and Luca Calitz.

Youth in Music Excellence FestivalPaul Roos Gymnasium is proud to have hosted the first annual Youth in Music Excellence Jazz festival as part of the Toyota Woordfees in collaboration with The Cape Town Music Academy (CTMA). The Youth in Music Excellence Initiative was a focused workshop in various aspects of jazz and contemporary music presented by top international and local music educators for young developing musicians The course consisted of a series of educational and performance workshops (group lectures, ensemble and individual work) designed to develop, shape and elevate the young person’s musical skills and pursuits. International lecturers included some of Sweden’s top jazz professionals - Fredrik Norén, lead trumpeter and musical director of the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, award-winning sax player Fredrik Kronkvist, also from the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra and considered one of Europe's finest alto sax players and young star drummer, Adam Ross. From Germany, Prof Martin Zenker, lecturer in jazz bass at Munich University and honorary professor in Jazz at the Mongolian State Conservatory. The workshopculminated in an official closing concert in the Japie Krige Hall, where the participants performed in various ensembles. The official YME Band performed as the opening act for Karen Zoid and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in the Karen Zoid 20 Years Pops Concert at the Toyota US Woordfees.

DEBATATKV-debatte se eerste rondte het op Vrydag en Saterdag, 28 en 29 Februarie by Hoërskool Stellenbosch plaasgevind. PRG het een junior en vier seniorspanne ingeskryf en moes die volgende onderwerpe voorberei : JUNIORS: “Geskiedenis behoort (nie) ’n verpligte vak in alle Suid-Afrikaanse hoërskole te wees (nie)” en SENIORS: “Die onttrekking van multinasionale maatskappye aan Suid-Afrika behoort die land (nie) tot voordeel te strek (nie)” .

Twee seniorspanne bestaande uit Nicolas Rust en Jordan Cridland, asook Wihan Meyer en Dirkie Aldrich dring deur na die Wes- Kaap se semi-finaal wat op 8 en 9 Mei sal plaasvind.

Nog ʼn nuutjie was vanjaar die PRG-interklasdebatskompetisie tussen graad 8 en 9-leerders. Dit is op 27 Februarie in die Japie Krige-saal gehou. Die doel was om nuwe talent te ontdek en om massa-deelname te verseker. Die volgende klasse tree as wenners uit die stryd: Gr.8A5 (beste spreker: Jurie Wessels), Gr.8A4 (beste spreker: Ivan Radley), Gr. 8A3 (beste spreker: Johan Slabbert), Gr.9A5 (beste spreker: Jo van Rooyen) en Gr.9A4 (beste spreker: Dirk Guelpa).

Die 2020 atletiekseisoen het op ‘n hoë noot afgeskop op

Vrydag 17 Januarie met die Interhuis Atletiekbyeenkoms.

Dit was ‘n warm dag in Stellenbosch, maar die seuns het op

alle terreine uitgeblink.

The first official event that the athletes participated in was

the HJS Top Boys’ Invitational event. The athletes barely

rested their feet when they got onto a bus to Green Point

Stadium where they competed in Rondebosch’s Invitational

meeting. On Friday 31 January we returned to Paarl to

compete in the HJS Invitational meeting.

Bloemroos 3de eindig. Joshua Acker ontvang die toekenning

vir die beste junior veldatleet.

The Boland events kicked off on 7-8 February with the

Boland Central Athletics. PRG entered 50 athletes and 21

qualified for the Boland trials held on 21-22 February.

Joshua Acker qualified for the Boland team, while 12

athletes were chosen for the Boland District team.

MOUNTAINBIKING2020 started with a bang. Paul Roos Mountainbiking started the season with Oak Valley 24hour challenge. In total, 26 boys took part. We won the fun event and came second in the race category.

Wp XCo Bloemendal was the next race in which various riders participated. PRG did very well. Henning Venter came 1st in the youth 16 category. Rupert Taljaart came 4th in the sub junior category. Matthew Lochner came 2nd in the Junior race.

Sa XCO Cup #Mankele

Three of our top riders took part in the SA Cup event held in Mankele. Rupert Taljaart came 3rd in the sub junior event. Henning Venter came 1st in the youth 16 race and Matthew Lochner came 2nd.

The school’s Mountainbiking season kicks off in a couple of weeks. We hope to raise the bar, and lift the trophies again.

PRG squash started with a few of the players eagerly competing in

various tournaments. Pierre Andro, Robert Lotter, Eon Rossouw,

Liam Swart and Caleb Waugh played Boland Squash trials on 7

March. Caleb played u14 and ended the day as number 2 in his age

group. Robert, Eon and Liam played in the u16 age group. Robert

came 3rd and Eon, still u15, came 5th. Liam ended 8th. Pierre played

u19 and he ended as the overall winner in his age group, and is

now ranked number one in Boland.

Based on their performances during Boland trials and playing the

necessary qualifying tournament, Pierre and Robert are invited to

participate in the South African qualifying tournament.

2020 se gholfaktiwiteite het vanjaar vinnig begin en is goed aan die gang met wedstryde, afrigtingsklinieke en oefenrondtes.GerardHartman en George Botha het albei verlede jaar in die laerskool vir Boland gespeel en is beslis 'n aanwins vir ons skool. Onspubliseer weekliks 'n ranglys om kompetisie onder die spelers te bevorder en spanne op 'n regverdige wyse te laat deelneem.Daar is 4 spanne van 6 spelers elk wat weekliks ligawedstryde op ons tuisbaan, De Zalze, en ook op ander omliggende bane in die Boland speel. Sover vaar ons spanne heel goed en die 1ste span het reeds oorwinnings behaal oor Somerset College, Boland Landbou en Paarl Gimnasium. Ongelukkig het ons Maandag met 2 punte teen Paarl Boishaai verloor, maar sien uit na ons tweede wedstryd teen hulle wat binnekort in die Paarl gespeel word. Verder het ons die ondersteuning van De Zalze Lodges en Thirty6onKaneel gastehuis bekom waarvoor ons baie dankbaar is. Danksy verdere ondersteuning van Adidas gaan dit ons in staat stel om ons spelers se klere op te gradeer.

Later vanjaar gaan 10 van ons spelers ook aan die Westville Boys’ High School uitnodigingstoernooi by Sun City deelneem. Verdere planne vir later vanjaar sluit in 'n o,12- toernooi vir laerskoolleerlinge met die oog daarop om hulle bloot te stel aan Paul Roos-gholf. Die jaarlikse Pa-en-Seun-dag sal ook weer aangebied word en daar sal ook weer meegeding word vir die Rektorstrofee. Boland T20-wennersDie eerstespan is die naweek van 22 en 23 Februarie, in opwindende krieket, as Boland T 20-wenners gekroon.

In die kwarteind-wedstryd is Somerset College vir 58 lopies uitgeboul en PRG steek die totaal verby met slegs een paaltjie plat. Jacques du Toit met 4 paaltjies vir 9 lopies was ons grootste uitblinker

In die semi- finaal klop PRG die sterk span van Hoër Jongenskool Paarl met 69 lopies. Ruben Senekal, met ‚n skitterende 101* van slegs 64 balle en Andy Siebert met 5 paaltjies vir 15 lopies, was die groot uitblinkers

In die finaal is Paarl Gimnasium in n spannende wedstryd met 5 paaltjies geklop. Dewaldt Grove teken 36 lopies aan.

In die Streek-finaal wen ons vir Hoërskool Langenhoven van Oudtshoorn, maar verloor ongelukkig teen SACS en eindig tweede in die Wes- Kaap

Paul Roos Gymnasium 100 Ball Premier League

The PRG 100 Ball Premier League cricket tournament took place on Tuesday 25 and Saturday 29 February at the PRG Oval and Markötter grounds.

Eight 11-a-side teams, with their own name and coloured clothing (18 in a squad) took part in a round-robin format with the final on the afternoon of Saturday 29 February. The final was won by the Stallions in a very close match against Markötter Cavaliers.

Each match consisted of two 100 ball innings (20 x 5 ball overs per side). The tournament was designed with inclusivity in mind, so each team was captained by a 1st XI Grade 12 learner and the remainder of the squad featured boys from all age groups, selected by the cricket coaching staff. Rules were designed to protect the younger players.

Once again, there was a much-anticipated Captains’ Auction on the evening of Tuesday 11 February in the Centre. All parents of participating learners, along with the 100 Ball Premier League teams, were invited to attend to take part in a fun and competitive build-up to the tournament.

Die o.15 Tennisspan het vir die 3de agtereenvolgende jaar koninggekraai by die Boland Landbou Tennistoernooi wat in Februarie in die Paarl plaasgevind het. Die PRG-span het kookwater tennis gespeel en was onoorwonne oor die twee dae se tennis nadathulle Paarl Boishaai (HJS) in die finaal geklop het.

Paul Roos recently participated in 2 of the Boland swimming relay galas. Relay gala 2 on 13 February at

Bloemhof and at Paarl Boys' High School on 28 February.

Paul Roos did exceptionally well at both these galas. We have 6 new u.14 swimmers who participated at

their first Paul Roos gala and they show promise for the future. They won all their relays this season and it is

wonderful to see such great talent at our school.

Definitely the highlight of the term was Paul Roos swimming the fastest times in the respective events.

100m Breaststroke at the Paarl Boys' gala and the 100m backstroke at the Bloemhof gala. These swimmers

were Petrus Truter, Ruben Faure, Righardt Muller and Ruard van Renen.

We are proud of the various achievements thus far and are looking forward to a great season.

Once again, while everyone was enjoying the last week of their December holidays the PRG water polo boys were hard at work at the annual pre-season camp. This camp covered all age groups over six days, with each age group having two sessions a day.The camp is vital in preparing our teams and selected for an action-packed 1st term, which included the following tours: Grey PE All-boys’ festival (23 – 25 January) – 14A, 15A,

Paul Roos has recently embraced the need to tour for water polo and the results thereof are evident. Playing 6 – 7 games over a weekend is more beneficial than our once-off league games played weekly at home. Through all the tours it has been evident how teams have improved. This has been a major improvement to our programme.

The U19B Water polo side toured to Port

Elizabeth to take part in the Pearson

Tournament. We ended 2nd, losing 2-4 to Clifton

in the final.

Oakridge U19A Chukka festival that was played in the Knysna Harbour. We won 3 games, lost 3

and drew 1.

The u14s kicked off their PRG Hockey careers with a festival hosted by DF Malan. The PRG Maroon team went unbeaten at the festival, winning 7 and drawing only 1 game. The PRG Gold team played 7 matches at the festival, winning an impressive 5, drawing 1 and losing only the 1 game, a great improvement on last year’s festival. The u19B side took part in the Milnerton festival, where they played off against first teams from other schools. We have had several of our players excelling on the indoor court over the December period as well as the start of the year. Kent Sheard, Zeke Hougaard and Paul Roos were all selected for the u14 Pro Series Indoor (PSI) All Star sides. Hans Neethling continues his excellence on the indoor court. He was selected for the u18 PSI All Star team and recently was selected for the Western Province Peninsula Men’s Indoor side to participate in the Senior Men’s Inter Provincial.

Moving across to the outdoor version, 3 of our learners (Hans Neethling, MunnikHuysamer and Thomas Sickle) were chosen to represent the SA u18 team to participate in the u21 Inter-Provincial Tournament in April. We are really proud and cannot wait to see them play for the maroon machine when the season begins.

The hockey staff would like to welcome our new coaches to the programme. Special mention to our new u16A hockey coach, Lungile Tsolekile. Lungile is a former national men’s hockey player having represented the country from 2005 to 2016, amassing over 100 international caps and has attended an Olympic Games, as well as numerous World Cups and Commonwealth Games. He also holds a South African Hockey Association Level 3 qualification, which is the highest that can be achieved in the country. We look forward to the expertise that Lungile brings and we are sure he will add tremendous value to the programme.
