Connecting OMNI tester to computer • Connect computer to OMNI tester unit via Ethernet patch cable. Any port will work

• Connect ET pigtail to EDDY CURRENT connector or the RFT pigtail to the DRIVER PICKUP connector (only use the corresponding pigtail that is meant for the tester. Example: DO NOT USE OMNI-100 pigtails on the OMNI-200)

• Turn on the tester

• Ensure that the computer has a compatible IP address (not identical)

The Acquisition expects the tester IP address to match the value displayed in the upper right part of the TESTER CONFIG screen

Tester IP address can be changed by selecting UTIL – IP SETUP from TESTER CONFIG menu

o Make sure that this value is the same as the one displayed in the upper right side of the TESTER CONFIG screen

o If you must change the IP value on the OMNI-200, edit the IP address field and toggle the SET field to YES to confirm the change and then press OK

Computer IP address should contain the first three octets as the tester (192.1.6.xxx)

Subnet mask on computer must be 255.255.255.0

• Select TEST LINK button in the TESTER CONFIG dialog box

Green bar at bottom should appear saying “TEST LINK GOOD”

NOTE: ALWAYS POWER DOWN TESTER BEFORE REMOVING OR CONNECTING PIGTAILS

Configuring the Tester

 Coils

o Coils 1 and 3 are used for ET on the OMNI-100

o Coils 1 and 2 are used for ET on the OMNI-200

o Coils 2 and 4 are used for RFT on the OMNI-100

o Coils 5 and 6 are used for RFT on the OMNI-200

o Must choose DIFF or ABS by right clicking on the coil number button

• A single Coil must be either all DIFF or ABS

 Frequencies

o In the multiplexed mode there can be up to 8 timeslots for the OMNI-100 and 16 timeslots for the OMNI-200

o Using simultaneous injection (OMNI-200 Only) allows up to 4 frequencies per timeslot

o Changing frequencies can be accomplished by:

• Left or right clicking on the frequency button

• Left click increments and right click decrements

• SHIFT left or right inc/decrements by 10

• CTRL left or right inc/decrements by 100

• SHIFT/CTRL or right inc/decrements by 1,000

• The left side of the frequency button changes the frequency value on the left side of the decimal

• The right side of the frequency button changes the frequency value on the right side of the decimal

Coil Gains (actually coil excitation voltage)

o In the ET mode the percentage represents a percentage of the coil excitation voltage. The max value (100%) is 12 Vpp for the OMNI-100 and 20 Vpp for the OMNI-200

 Coil Input Gain (OMNI-200 only)

o This value represents the final amplification stage

o Typical values for ET are 14-20DB for coil 1 (DIFF) and 8-14DB for coil 2 (ABS)

o Typical values for RFT are 8DB for coil 5 (DIFF) and 2DB for coil 6 (ABS)

 Dynamic Gain (OMNI-200 only)

o Allows OMNI-200 to function as a 21 bit tester (32-bit mode eneabled)

o Most effective when 32 bit data mode is used

o Requires longer delay times

Page 4: Omni Tester Setup

OMNI-100/200 Guidelines Page 4 of 25

 Delays and over sampling

o Delays and over sampling affect signal quality

o Auto Config should be used to set the delays, filter, and over sampling for the OMNI-100

o At a minimum, the delay on the OMNI-200 should be set high enough to allow for settling time

o As much over-sampling as possible, this reduces noise

• Lower frequencies do not permit as much over-sampling due to time constraints (OMNI-200)

o The value will turn RED if there is not enough time in the time-slot (OMNI-200)

o Press the EXPLAIN button when the values turn RED, it will describe problem and tell you what to set the values at (OMNI-200)

 Internal Reference (OMNI-200 Only)

o This is an optional feature that generates absolute reference data without requiring an absolute probe

o It is enabled by activating the toggle button on the upper left side of the TESTER CONFIG dialog box called Internal Reference

o REF NULL must be selected once the probe is in a defect area of tubing

o Some noise may be present at high frequencies

• The noise is easily eliminated by creating a channel with a smoothing or bandpass filter

Basic Steps for Acquiring ET Data • Power down tester and connect ET pigtail to the EDDY CURRENT connector on

the front of the tester

• Connect test probe and reference probe to ET pigtail. If using the internal reference feature of the OMNI-200, there is no need to connect a reference probe.

• Perform a TEST LINK function to verify that the tester is connected to the computer

• Adjust frequencies to desired values

• Make sure that driver 1 is selected for all time slots (OMNI-200)

• OMNI-100 will use coils 1(diff) & 3(abs)

• OMNI-200 will use coils 1(diff) & 2(abs)

• Put the probe in a clean section of tube and press BALANCE (OMNI-200)

• If you have selected to use the internal reference feature of the OMNI-200, put the probe in a clean section of tube and press REF NULL – wait for the software to null all channels

• Save configuration to file (use FILE-SAVE AS from menu)

• Close the TESTER CONFIG dialog box and start the tester

Basic Steps for Acquiring RFT Data • Power down tester and connect RFT pigtail to the DRIVER PICKUP connector on

the front of the tester

• Perform a TEST LINK function to verify that the tester is connected to the computer

• OMNI-100 will use coils 2(diff) & 4(abs)

• OMNI-200 will use coils 5(diff) & 6(abs)

• Make sure that driver 3 is selected for all time slots (OMNI-200)

• Adjust frequencies to desired values

• Save configuration to file (use FILE-SAVE AS from menu)

• Close the TESTER CONFIG dialog box and start the tester

The operator must choose the DIFF or ABS by right clicking on the coil number button. A single coil must be either all DIFF or ABS. Up to 4 ET impedance coils can be used.

Coil gains (actually coil excitation voltage) in the ET mode, the percentage represent a percentage of the coil excitation voltage. The max value (100%) is 12 Vpp for the OMNI-100 and 20 Vpp for the OMNI-200

Page 12: Omni Tester Setup

OMNI-100/200 Guidelines Page 12 of 25

The value of the COIL INPUT GAIN represents the final amplification stage for the OMNI-200. Typical values for ET are 14-20DB for coil 1 (DIFF) and 8-14DB for coil 2 (ABS). In the example above, they are set to 14DB for coil 1 and 8DB for coil 2. This is the best starting point. Typical values for RFT are 8DB for coil 5 (DIFF) and 2DB for coil 6 (ABS).

Page 13: Omni Tester Setup

Dynamic Gain allows the OMNI-200 to function as a 21 bit tester. It requires 32 bit data mode and longer delay times. Delay times and over sampling can affect data quality if the operator is not careful. Ideally enough delay is needed to use the dynamic gain feature. Use as much over sampling as possible. This will help reduce noise.

Page 14: Omni Tester Setup

The DELAY value will turn RED if there is not enough time in the time-slot.

Press the EXPLAIN button when the values turn RED and it will describe the problem and tell you what to set the DELAY values at.

Press OK and then enter in the delay numbers required in the appropriate time slots.
