COMMANDANT’S CORNER 1 MARCH 2020 VOLUME 6, EDITION 2 WINTER QUARTER 2019 1 DECEMBER 2019- 29 FEBRUARY 2020 EDITOR TIM MANCHESTER League Officers Commandant Steve Tracy Senior Vice Luis Alers Junior Vice Bob Shannon Judge Advocate Mark Munger Adjutant Bob Shannon Paymaster Robert Rooth Chaplain Mark Munger Sergeant-at-Arms Joe Beam Jr. Historian/ Webmaster/Editor Tim Manchester Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407, P.O. Box 83, Swansboro, NC 28584-8572 Greetings Marines and FMF Corpsmen, I hope this letter finds you all well. I would first like to thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Commandant. It has been an honor to be able to serve a second year. I look back at the things we accomplished this past year and I am very proud of our hard work. The Detachment has been active with the duties we usually perform, memorial ceremonies, helping area Veterans, attending Veteran functions, etc. Toys for Tots was another huge success. A job well done by those that take care of the program. Our Eagle Scout Coordinator, Pat Curley was able to recognized one of Swansboro’s own Eagles Scouts, with a “Good Citizenship Award.” Our liaison between our Young Marines and the Detachment is very good. Dave Burger has done an excellent job keeping us informed on what the young folk are doing. We as a Detachment lost 2 of our own members this past January. Allan Preble and Hurbert Brennen were both good Marines and both worked hard to help those around them. They will be missed by those that knew them and their contributions to the Veteran Community. We are known as the Detachment that gets things done and I am very proud of all who made this a fact. We will continue to strive to be the best and work hard to improve, as we go about our daily routines. My goals for this next year is to get our scholarship program in place. We have the 5K run organized and will have our second run next month. I want to see us to continue to improve our exposure to the general public. I want to continue and work hard on our fund raisers, in order to improve on what we can offer, to assist those in need. I would like to see continued growth in our membership, but not just names on a roster. Let us all work on recruiting one good friend or associate to become a member in our Detachment. Be proud in what we do and what we represent. Marines join things to make a difference and to contribute back. We need to be proactive in what we do and it needs to be done at the highest level of expertise and professionalism. As we go into this Spring, lets us stay safe, be vigilant to the events around you, and look after each other and our fellow Marines and Navy Docs. Semper Fi. Steve Tracy, Commandant, Swansboro 1407

Training for Department/Detachment Adjutants and Paymasters during the months of January and February 2020.

All Departments are to place an increased emphasis on those detachments that are weak or need assistance with the filing of their reports, meeting minutes, ROI, PLM audits, 990 filing or any other administrative procedures.

All Departments should have a professional development training team and use these members to offer assistance to their struggling detachments. Detachments need to be operated like a business entity since they are incorporated and operate under IRS guidelines as a non-profit organization.

HISTORY AND TRADITION

20 December 1989: Operation Just Cause was launched in

Panama to protect American lives, restore the democratic

process, preserve the integrity of the Panama Canal Treaty,

and apprehend dictator General Manuel Antonio Noriega.

One Marine, Corporal Garreth C. Isaak, was killed and three

other were wounded during the operation.

29 January 1991: The first serious ground

fighting of Operation Desert Storm broke

out when Iraqi troops mounted an attack

into Saudi Arabia along a 40-mile front.

Iraqi units centered their efforts on Khafji,

a port city six miles south of the border.

Saudi and Quatari troops, supported by

artillery from the 1st Marine Division and

attack helicopters and other allied

coalition aircraft, recaptured the town

two days later.

1 February 1967: Operation Prairie II was

begun in Quang Tri province by elements

of the 3d Marine Division. During the

46-day search-and-destroy operation

which terminated 18 March, 93 Marines
