It was fabulous to see our students participating so wonderfully at yesterday’s faction athletics carnival.
The inclusion of a number of new events including hurdles this year made for a real spectacle. The final

Congratulations to all students, I was extremely proud of the way they participated throughout the day
with good sportsmanship as well as lots of competitive energy. Our Champions for the day were:

Well done to the school staff who worked to ensure the carnival ran smoothly. A special thank you to Mr
Stubbs for his organisation and leadership of the event. Running the carnival off-site requires a significant
amount of effort and Mr Stubbs does this without equivocation.
Thank you also to our wonderful parent community who once again supported our students with their
amazing energy and enthusiasm. Special thanks to Jodie McIntosh and Camilla Rea for their coordination of
the parent volunteers without whom we would not be able to run such an inclusive and interactive carnival.
From the Principal
In Health this term Room 4 are learning about Protective Behaviours and that 'we all have the right to
feel safe at all times'
One of the great attributes of our school is the way the whole school community pitches in and our carnival was an exam-
ple of this, with school staff and parents collaborating through the planning and running of the event to give great oppor-
tunities for our students.
Developing Partnerships
To further enrich opportunities for students at our school, in line with our school Business Plan I would be interested to make contact with any parents in the school who have connections with educational or other organisations who may be willing to partner with the school especially in the areas of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathe-matics) and/or sustainability. If you have specific expertise to offer in these areas, please contact me via email [email protected] Parent Survey
Our Annual Parent Survey will go out next Monday. You should receive an email from [email protected] con-taining a link with your unique access code to this year’s Parent Survey. Please take the time to complete the survey as it provides us with important information regarding our school and our on-going planning and improvement.
Expert Review Group (ERG) 24 Month Review Process As part of the ERG process, over the next few weeks, the school will complete a self-review against the 10 Find-ings of the ERG report, providing evidence of our work over the past 2 years and the continued development and sustainability of improvements made.
This review is considered by the North Metropolitan Education Region Assistant Executive Director and the Di-rector of the ERG who may in turn seek further clarification or information to verify this assessment. The Direc-tor of the ERG then makes recommendations to the Director General regarding this self-assessment and the school’s ongoing improvements. We are submitting our evidence on the 14th September and will inform the school community of the outcome as soon as is possible. Production
A reminder that our year 6 Production, Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits will be staged at the Subiaco Arts Centre on Tues-
day 28th and Wednesday 29th August. Our pre-primary to year 2 students will attend a matinée performance during the
school day on Tuesday 28th August, however the older classes do not attend the matinée but are encouraged to purchase
tickets and come along in the evening with their parents.
Tickets are still on sale in the office for $25 each. This is always a great night and it is a wonderful opportunity to see the
talents of our students on show.
Open Night
Along with Athletics practice, Bookweek activities and Production rehearsals, staff and students are busy preparing for our
Open Night on Thursday 6th September. The evening will have staggered times with pre-primary to year 3 classes open
from 6pm – 7 pm and year 4 to 6 classes from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. The school choirs will perform from 7.30 to approxi-
mately 7.45pm to round off the evening. Please note this evening is not designed for parent interviews, rather it is an op-
portunity for students to show their parents around their classes and explain some of their work.
I would like to thank all members of the school community for your ongoing support of our school in so many ways!

SCHOOL BOARD MATTERS
The Board have finalised the content of the School’s 2018-2020 Business Plan. It is currently with the designers/printers and will be released to the school community shortly. The areas covered in the Plan are already in the process of being implemented by the school.
Representatives of the Board continue to work with the Town of Cottesloe to devise a safer slip way solution which has less detrimental effect on the road users. To this end there is a trial time limited parking arrangement for the car park opposite school along the railway and the Town are funding a traffic survey.
Board elections have been held and 2 new parent representatives will be announced shortly. Our community representative, Mr Steve Carre, is finishing his term. If anyone knows of an appropriate person to join our Board as a community representative please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected]

P&C MATTERS
North Cottesloe Primary School P&C Planning Session
3 September 2018
6.30pm
School Library
YOUR P&C is looking for ideas – BIG and small – about what we can do in the future to make our school and our kids’ educational experience even better!
We are running a facilitated planning session at 6.30pm on 3 September 2018 in the school library and hope to hear from as many parents as possible about what they see as important and where the P&C’s resources could be directed.
We are particularly keen for the parents of kids in the younger years to come along and share their ide-as and dreams, as their kids will be in a position to benefit directly from any improvements we can make.
Come along, meet some new people and let’s get inspired to make a difference.
If you have any queries, please contact P & C President John Livingston [email protected]
Thanks to Room 12 & our parent choppers & peelers for participating in August’s Nourish Soup Kitchen. From your kindness and generosity roughly 80 homeless men, women and children enjoyed a beautiful, hot beef stew & frittata with a healthy fruit salad on the side last week!
In case you haven’t heard, Nourish has kicked off a new program at North Cott. Each month a participating classroom will provide food to be cooked and served for homeless people via the Homelessness; We Care group. Homelessness; We Care is a non-profit organisation that provides hot meals and necessities to people who are struggling in Perth and in Fremantle. We have seen first hand how grateful these people are to receive a warm meal and some necessities to get them by. This program is teaching our children about the wider Perth community and how to show empathy and give back to those less fortunate. It truly is an amazing service our children are helping to provide and they have all been so excited and eager to give back!
Here are some photos from last week’s meal service. Thank you so much to everyone involved. If you would like to be involved in this program please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any one of our Nourish committee members. There’s always lots of chopping to do!

On Tuesday the 21st of August Room 11 and 12 visited Perth Zoo. All of the students participated in activities about ways in which they can individually prevent flora and fauna becoming extinct in and around Western Australia. The students braved the rain to learn about all different species of animals from around the world. They will be relating this to their work in Science and HASS. A great day was had by all.
Did you know that the giraffes tongue is blue to prevent it from getting sun burnt?
Did you know that an African elephant eats 150kgs of food per day?
Did you know that a numbat eats 20,000 termites per day?
On Tuesday August 21st the year 3 cohort ventured to The Fisheries Department in Hillarys to extend our
biological science learning. Whilst there we took part in two fun filled activities.
The first activity taught us about the importance of ‘fishing for the future’. We learnt about the fishing
rules that apply along the coast of WA and the importance of not over fishing a species or catching them
too small.
Our second activity had us sorting through beach matter. We extended our developing classification knowledge and sorted marine animals from marine plants, learning the scientific names for much of the
animal and plant life we see on our beaches.
Art Bites year four
Students have been exploring the work of
Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement.
They have been challenged to create a silk
screen print of an iconic person in their lives.
year three
Students have chosen a native animal to
draw and paint, focusing on colour theory
and painting skills learnt last term.
year two
With the theme, My Special Place, students
have focused on applying their understand-
ings of colour theory and pattern to their art.
These colour trials in texta will be transformed
into paintings over the next few weeks.
year one
Year one students have been exploring the structure,
texture and patterns of banksias during art class. Here are
some of the budding botanical artists at work
Art Bites
Last Wednesday 15 children from Years 1 to 3 engaged in some Nature Art activities. Their task was to collect things from the environment to create a circular pattern. All were highly engaged and eager to explain their creations.
