Plan B

Raising money…

Tough Exhausting Time Consuming Distracting But victory is very sweet!

15/04/2023 5

Plan B

The Australian Venture Capital sector is relatively small

In the US, VCs manage billions, in Australia the biggest would manage around $300m

15/04/2023 6

Plan B

Despite our size, Australia has had some successes

15/04/2023 7

Plan B

The of success of digital start-ups has inspired a whole new generation of Angels, Incubators and VCs.

So, what does all this mean for you?

Remember when pitching…

Plan A Plan B

Investors generally see lots of ‘pitch-decks’ or Information Memorandums

Investors also have their areas of interest or focus. Might be due to experience or investment theme

Rule of thumb of investing 1 in 100 is generally right

Assess the investor / VC firm

15/04/2023 10

Plan A Plan B

Portfolio / Investment track record

Track record of Directors / Partners (have they grown a business themselves)

Size of fund (do they have money for follow-on rounds).

Speak to their other investees (understand how hands on the team is and how good their network is)

Generally… the process is..

15/04/2023 11

Plan A Plan B1. You send in a ‘pitch-deck’ which gets reviewed

2. In most instances, you’ll at least have the chance for a one-on-one or a phone call (I always meet/speak)

3. If there is interest, DD starts (start to end can be 6 weeks to 6 months). Make sure you are clear on process so you don’t get ‘strung along’

4. Angels less likely to have a formal process

Our approach

15/04/2023 13

Plan A

We don’t manage a fund. Its all ‘Principal

Money’

Means we are pretty flexible

Can invest $0.5M - $10M (generally in stages)

Must be cash generating (not necessarily

profitable)

We invest where we can add value so our

approach is generally ‘high touch’

What we look at…

15/04/2023 14

Plan A

People. People. People. (can’t stress how important this

is)

Problem being solved

Growth opportunity (how big can this business get)

What do we need to believe for this to be a success (and

test the assumptions)

Thank you…
