joined the prestigious 1,000-Point Club on Jan. 4 vs. Fort Wayne. Tyus was the 37th UNO player to reach the 1,000 points milestone, and over four active seasons (2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17), he has amassed 1,142 career points to rank 17th in school history. Omaha’s active career leader for 3-pointers, Tyus moved up to 10th on the triples chart Jan. 28 vs. South Dakota State. His career total of 143 sits just behind Alex Welhouse (2008-13), who had 151.

History-Making Hollins Senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins is Omaha’s all-time leader for both career and single-season steals. He joined the top 20 for career steals on Feb. 6, 2016 and finally claimed the career mark in his 52nd game as a Maverick, vs. Denver on Jan. 18, by passing Calvin Kapels (2002-06), who had 191. Hollins now has a career total of 197 swipes as he continues to add to his record mark. Hollins’ 196 assists last season were the second-highest single-season mark in school history. He broke into the top 20 for assists Nov. 19 vs. Rice and is now eighth all-time with 340, having passed Thad Mott (1988-92), who had 328. Hollins now needs four more to pass CJ Carter (2011-15), who had 343 for seventh. Last season, Hollins claimed Omaha’s single-season steals record (then 81) vs. Fort Wayne on Jan. 16, 2016, clearing the previous mark of 80 set by Vernon Manning (1981-82). Hollins was also the first Omaha player in six years to record a double-double off points and assists, finishing with 23 points, 13 assists and eight steals against the Mastodons.

Tracking Tre’Shawn Midway through the 2016-17 campaign, junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman sits at fifth on Omaha's career blocks list with 85. The Omaha Central product recently passed Levy Jones (2003-05) on the chart, who had 83, and his next hurdle is Frank Cypress (1993-95), who had 94. Thurman inked his name in the Omaha record books for career rebounds earlier this season, joining the top 20 in school history on Dec. 21 at Pitt. He currently sits at 13th on the list with 541 boards, having passed Glenn Moberg (1975-79), who had 531. Thurman's next target is Dennis Forrest (1973-77), who grabbed 557. Thurman is also the second Maverick this season to join the 1,000 Point Club, joining Marcus Tyus. Thurman became the 38th 1,000-point scorer in school history on Jan. 28 vs. South Dakota State, and he now owns 1,006 career points to tie for 35th all-time with Pat Roehrig (1971-75). Thurman needs 10 more points to pass Paul Sieczkowski (1968-72), who had 1,016 for 33rd.

Stacking Up Nationally As a team, Omaha ranks 14th nationally for free throws made (411), 20th for scoring offense (82.8), 25th for free throw attempts (550), 32nd for 3-point percentage (.389), 39th for steals per game (7.8), 41st for 3-pointers made (201), 43rd for 3-pointers made per game (9.1) and 44th for free throw percentage (.747). with five 3-pointers. Hahn was the first Maverick to knock down at least five triples in a season opener since former Maverick Jeff Martin did so in 2009-10.

Road Warriors Omaha has played 13 of its 22 games this season on the road and traveled 21,527 miles so far. The Mavericks had a challenging start to Summit League play, with four of their first five games away. Senior guard Marcus Tyus has led the charge for Omaha in road battles with an average of 13.6 points per game, while junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman pulls down 8.1 rebounds and 12.7 points per game in those contests. On the road, Omaha is a .755 free throw shooting team, up from .738 at home. The Mavericks also average 37.8 rebounds per game in away games compared to 31.3 at Baxter Arena.

Second-Half Success Omaha has averaged 43.0 second-half points this season, up from 39.0 first-half points per game. The Mavericks have seen second-half success from 3-point range, shooting .433 (109-of-252) in the second stanza compared to .346 (91-of-263) in the first. Senior guard Marcus Tyus has been particularly effective in the second half, shooting .534 (63-of-118) from the field compared to .408 (49-of-120) in the first. Tyus is bolstered by .509 (27-of-53) 3-point shooting in his second-half performances, an improvement from .387 (24-of-62) in the opening half.

Solid at the Stripe Omaha has been strong at the free throw line this season, hitting at a .747 clip. The Mavericks have shot over .700 14 times, and Jan. 7 at South Dakota State went an unblemished 21-of-21 at the line in the second half. Earlier this year, Omaha fired at over .900 in back-to-back games -- .923 (24-of-26) Nov. 26 at Eastern Michigan and .926 (25-of-27) Dec. 30 at Cal State Fullerton. The last time a Maverick team shot .900 or better at the stripe in back-to-back games was 2007-08 vs. York College (.926 on Jan. 12, 2008) and Nebraska-Kearney (.900 on Jan. 14, 2008).

Marcus Making His Mark Senior guard Marcus Tyus tallied his fourth 30-point game of the season Jan. 18 vs. Denver. Previously, Tyus had a career-high 37 points Dec. 10 vs. Montana State, which tied for the sixth-best scoring performance in school history with Calvin Kapels vs. St. Cloud State (Jan. 26, 2006) and Devin Patterson at Duquesne (March 16, 2016). Tyus also dropped 33 at USC on Nov. 13 and 34 at South Dakota State on Jan. 7.

Action Jackson Sophomore guard Zach Jackson is third on the team for rebounding with 4.6 boards per game and fifth for scoring with 11.0 points per game this season. In Omaha’s season opener Nov. 12 at UCSB, he scored 14 points and pulled down a career-best and eight rebounds and has matched the rebounding performance twice more -- Nov. 15 at Kansas State and Dec. 3 at Iowa. Jackson also put up a career-high 21 points against the Hawkeyes, and he has scored in double figures in all but seven games this season. Jackson started 24 games in his freshman campaign in 2015-16, averaging 3.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest. A native of Wichita, Kan., he was the first Omaha freshman to start a season opener since CJ Carter in 2011. Jackson also had the distinction of making the first basket in Baxter Arena history, nailing a jumper 52 seconds into last year’s season opener vs. UC Santa Barbara.

Double the Trouble, Double the Fun Senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins (20 points/10 assists) and junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman (15 points/12 rebounds) both had double-doubles Dec. 18 vs. Cal State Fullerton. It marked the first time this season UNO has had two double-doubles in a single game. In 2015-16, Omaha had three such showings, with double-doubles from two Mavericks vs. Fort Wayne (Jan. 16, 2016), vs. Simpson (Dec. 16, 2015) and vs. Eastern Michigan (Dec. 1, 2015).

Looking to the Bench Omaha’s bench outscored Buena Vista’s bench 60-28 on Nov. 22. The last time the Mavericks’ bench enjoyed a scoring margin of 30 or more was March 1, 2014, when UNO outscored Fort Wayne’s reserves 59-26. The 2016-17 Mavericks are averaging 26.7 points per game by bench scorers, the highest of any Derrin Hansen-coached team. The next highest average is courtesy of the 2013-14 squad, which had 26.6 bench points per game. Over the last six games, Omaha has held a 178-123 bench advantage and averaged 29.7 bench points per game.

Erickson Granted Sixth Year of Eligibility by NCAA Senior guard Kyler Erickson was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA to play in 2016-17, it was announced in May. The waiver was granted after the university submitted a request for an extension of eligibility beyond Erickson’s five-year window. Erickson began his collegiate career at Northwest Missouri State, redshirting in 2011-12 before playing the 2012-13 season. Upon transferring to UNO, he sat out the 2013-14 season in compliance with the NCAA’s one-year residency requirement for transfers. Erickson then played in 2014-15 and 2015-16 for the Mavericks, moving into a starting role in the middle of the latter season. As a senior at Millard South High School, Erickson had witnessed a shooting in his school’s administration office on Jan. 5, 2011. Nearly a year and a half later, he suffered the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and since undergoing successful treatment, he has become a vocal advocate encouraging others to seek assistance for mental health issues. Erickson runs a website, KylerErickson.com, that details his story, and his videos have garnered widespread attention with over 120,000 views in 114 countries. Erickson’s message of “turning tragedy into testimony” encourages people in all walks of life to confront mental health challenges they may be facing. For his dedication to community service, Erickson was named to the 2016 Allstate NABC Good Works team. Over the last five years, he has served as a speaker, member and volunteer for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and spoken to over 20 elementary, middle and high schools in Omaha and San Diego. He also starred in an episode of “The Harbor TV,” a hope-filled homeroom program for high schools across the country and has mentored several mentally ill students and residents in the Omaha area. Additionally, Erickson has volunteered with multiple local charities, organizations and schools.

Man of Steal In 2015-16, Tra-Deon Hollins led the nation in both total steals (127) and steals per game (3.97), well ahead of the second-ranked player, Hameed Ali of Texas A&M Corpus Christi (88; 2.67).

Hollins finished one steal shy of averaging a full 4.0 steals per game, and he was the first player in more than a decade to tally 3.5 steals per game while appearing in at least 25 contests. If Hollins can surpass last year’s steals output in his senior campaign, he can become just the 12th Division I player to average 4.0 steals or more for a season. The last time it happened was 2002, when Alabama A&M’s Desmond Cambridge averaged a nation-leading 5.52 spg and Providence’s John Linehan had 4.48 spg. Hollins has long been regarded for his defensive prowess and is no stranger to pacing the nation in steals, as he led all players in the NJCAA with 4.1 swipes per game while playing at Central CC in 2013-14.

Omaha Overseas Five former Mavericks have gone on to play professionally overseas in the last two years: forward Mike Rostampour (Slovakia), guards CJ Carter (Macedonia), Devin Patterson (Lithuania) and Tim Smallwood (Italy) and guard/forward Randy Reed II (Tunisia). Carter and Rostampour, both 2014-15 graduates, won league championships with their respective teams last season. Carter’s MZT Skopje Aerodrom team captured the Prva Liga title, while Rostampour’s BC Prievidza squad won the Slovak Extraliga crown. Three members of the 2015-16 graduating class have also signed professional contracts. Patterson joined the BC Šiauliai club, which plays in the Lithuanian Basketball League and Baltic Basketball League, while Reed signed with Jeunesse Sportive d’El Mensah in Tunisia’s Ligue 1. Smallwood signed most recently and joined Manerbio GoodBook in Italy's Serie C Gold league last weekend.

Welcome to the Good Life Omaha’s roster includes six players from the state of Nebraska: senior guards Tra-Deon Hollins and Kyler Erickson, junior forward Tre’Shawn Thurman, junior guard Alex Allbery, sophomore forward Mitch Hahn and redshirt freshman forward Ben Kositzke. Hollins, Erickson and Thurman -- all three Omaha natives -- tote previous starting experience, as Hollins and Thurman started every game in 2015-16, and Erickson got the nod in the last seven games of the year.

Fly, Eagles, Fly Omaha's starting lineup includes senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins and junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman, who were previously teammates at Omaha Central High School. The duo played three years together at Central, winning a trio of state championships (2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13). Hollins and Thurman are the first pair of former high school teammates to start a game at UNO together since John Karhoff and Caleb Steffensmeier (Creighton Prep) in 2013-14.

Transfer Trio Brings Past Division I Experience Omaha’s roster includes a trio of transfers with previous Division I playing experience with junior guard Daniel Norl, sophomore forward Mitch Hahn and senior guard Renard Suggs. Norl began his collegiate career at Eastern Kentucky in 2014-15, appearing in 11 games in reserve for the Colonels. Last season, he played at Mineral Area CC, where he averaged 10.5 points per game and shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent at the free throw line. Hahn, a Fremont, Neb. native, sat out in 2015-16 in accordance with NCAA transfer rules after playing his freshman season at Holy Cross. He averaged 4.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game and shot .447 from the field. Suggs joins the Mavericks after playing at Washington State in 2015-16. He appeared in 25 games for the Cougars, averaging 5.4 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists over 12.6 minutes per game minutes per game. Suggs scored in double figures in the first three games of the season and posted a career-high 14 points off the bench in WSU’s upset of No. 25 UCLA. He will sit out in 2016-17 in accordance with NCAA transfer rules.

Robinson’s Ready Freshman guard KJ Robinson is the only true freshman on Omaha’s roster this season, and he comes armed with a list of prep accomplishments. At Blue Springs South High School in Blue Springs, Mo., Robinson received a three-star rating from Rivals and helped the Jaguars win their first state championship in 2015. He was a three-time first-team all-conference, all-area and all-district selection over his career and earned all-state accolades as a senior after averaging 25.0 points per game. Robinson made his career debut for Omaha in the Nov. 12 season opener at UC Santa Barbara, finishing with seven points on 2-of-3 shooting off the bench. In UNO’s win over Buena Vista on Nov. 22, he tallied a season-high 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting with three 3-pointers.
