A newcomer pupil is one who has enrolled in a school but who does not have the

satisfactory language skills to participate fully in the school curriculum, and the wider

environment, and does not have a language in common with the teacher, whether that

is English or Irish. This has previously been referred to as English as an Additional

Language. It does not refer to indigenous pupils who choose to attend an Irish medium

school.

Within schools in Omagh LGD in 2013/14 there were 70 pupils from the Travelling

Community, 58 attended primary schools and 12 attended post-primary schools.

There were also at least 30* Looked After Children, at least 20* from primary schools

and at 10* from post-primary schools. (*Figures suppressed in some cases due to small

numbers).

Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measures (NIMDM)

The Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure was published in May 2010. The

report identifies small area concentrations of multiple deprivation across Northern

Ireland. The results for Omagh LGD are highlighted below.

Omagh LGD has an Extent of 7%, this means that 7% of the Omagh population live in

the most deprived Super Output Areas (SOA) in Northern Ireland.

The Income Scale highlights that there are 13,291 people in Omagh LGD experiencing

income deprivation, while the Employment Scale shows that a total of 4,285 people in

Omagh experience employment deprivation.

Both the Income and Employment Scales can be presented as rates of the relevant

population, 26% have been identified as income deprived and 14% as employment

deprived.

The following tables illustrate some of the levels of derivation that exist in Omagh LGD.
