July 5, 2015 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Our Law is love.

The Supreme Court decision last week was the capstone to the hardest fought and most divisive social debate since abortion. With the Church’s teaching going from an unquestioned societal truth to a much- maligned minority position in less than a decade, most of us are feeling a little off-balance. What do we do? What can we do? Well, I’ll tell you what we can do. We are Christians. We will do what we always do. We will love.

First, we will continue to model beautiful, faithful marriages. We will not abandon society to the idea that marriage is nothing more than an institution of good feelings that can be abandoned when those feelings are gone. Instead, we will model the better way, the way of complete abandonment to another out of love, the way modeled to us by Jesus. We, through our love for each other and our love for our children, will prove without saying a word that True Love is in our midst.

Second, we will unfailingly love our LGBT children, siblings, family, friends, and co-workers. We will expose the lie that disagreement is the same thing as hatred, and we will shower upon them every ounce of love and affection that God himself wishes for these sons and daughters of his. We will also unmask the lie that love is nothing more than a shallow tolerance for every behavior and preference, instead exercising the most profound love of our God, who did not abandon us to our folly, but who instead challenges us to grow in holiness and virtue every day.

Third, we will heed the words of our Lord, by loving our enemies and praying for those who persecute us. No matter what may come, we will refuse to return evil for evil, returning a blessing instead, knowing that those who remain angry will consume themselves. We will allow whatever martyrdom we may experience, in public or private, in social status or financial circumscription, to be the seeds of a new renewal of the Church.

Finally, we will love the magnificent truths that God has given us, by educating ourselves on the doctrines of the Church. We will be honest with our doubts and reservations, but will give the Catholic tradition a chance to win us over as we read the documents of the Church and ask for guidance from the holy men and women in our community. We will not fall into the trap of desiring a Church created in our own image, but will instead strive to appreciate the inscrutable wisdom of God who created the Church as His own bride.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. May the love of Christ be with you always,

Jeffrey Moore Seminarian

Following up on Jeffrey’s thoughts, in the coming weeks I will include some further reflections on the Church’s teaching about marriage and a few practical ways for answering questions and criticisms. As always, the bottom line is God’s love and God’s definition of love that really matters.

I want to thank all those who attended the Matthew Kelly event last Saturday. It was an extraordinary morning with over 800 people in attendance. It was great to see so many parishioners as well as many others from all over the Northwest and beyond. There was such prayerful excitement and joy during our gathering. Thanks to all who helped in any way to make this event run so smoothly.

I will recap a few ideas Matthew talked about in the next few weeks, so just one thought I’d like to share with you today: He reminded us that our fundamental call as Catholics and as human beings is to holiness, to be the best version of ourselves that God has created us to be. This takes openness to the Holy Spirit and effort on our part to respond to the grace of God. This best version, this “God” version, will not aways looks like the “world version,” the way culture and society will have us act and coerce us to be. Let us not live for the mere immediate but rather for the eternal to which we are called. In Christ, I love you,

stewardship

Shoulder to Shoulder is a ministry of St. Michael Parish based on the premise that parishioners in need can rely on their church family for assistance.

Let’s face it; life sometimes throws us a curve ball – that unexpected medical expense, car repairs that

exceed the monthly budget, a job loss resulting in the inability to make next month’s rent payment. Life happens.

It’s important for parishioners to know that they can turn to their church family in those unexpected times of need.

Established by Fr. Jim several years ago and using a portion of our rebate from the Annual Catholic Appeal, the Shoulder to Shoulder ministry was initially formed to help parishioners through the “Great Recession”. But the need continues.

Parishioners simply fill out an application (available online or on the Good News Stand) which is quickly screened by a committee of five fellow parishioners. Names and identifying information are scrubbed from the application in advance of the committee’s review and all information is held in strict confidence.

The committee forwards its recommendation to Fr. Jim and checks are written directly to the service provider – the utility company, the landlord, the car repair shop – not to the applicant.

If you find yourself in the midst of a financial crisis, the Shoulder to Shoulder ministry is there to help. Simply fill out an application and submit it to Fr. Jim at the Parish Office. And remember, Shoulder to Shoulder is available to our church family thanks to the incredible generosity of our parishioners.

1. Not making a vacation budget. Simply write down how much cash you want to spend on things like restaurants, groceries, souvenirs, entertainment and aloe vera. Right now, not mid-trip, is the time to decide how much vacation you can actually afford.

2. Booking a hotel room instead of a rental property. Renting an apartment, house or condo from a home-owner is a great way to avoid expensive hotel extras. Plus, with a vacation rental, you can use the kitchen to prepare most of your meals and the laundry facili-ties to save room in your suitcases. Double win!

3. Loading up on gas station snacks. Buying snacks on impulse can get out of hand in a hurry. As you pack up the car, make room for a cooler with waters, juice boxes and snacks. Faster pit stops save you time and money.

4. Paying sticker price for theme parks. There are countless ways to find discounts on admission to theme parks and water parks, so there’s really no excuse to pay full price. Watch for Groupon deals, entertainment book deals, AAA discounts or other online offers. Budget for a light snack while you’re there, but plan your main meals elsewhere!

5. Indulging the kids. This is not a second Christmas. This is family time with pretty scenery. So don’t fall for the trap that your kids “deserve” piles of plastic things. The trip is their gift!

6. Buying all the stuff you forgot. Make a detailed list for each family member plus a household list. Two days before you leave, have a packing party and check off items as you pack. Revisit each list the morning of your trip!

7. Eating out too often. Cooking at your home-away-from-home will save you a bundle, especially if you plan your meals ahead of time!

Using your talents in ministryProvided as a supplement to Living Your Strengths: Discover Your God-Given Talents and Inspire Your

Community (pp. 155-222)

Command - You have presence. You can take control of a situation and make decisions!

- If you see a crisis, get involved! Tough times bring out your best.

- Look for opportunities to lead. Your emotional strength will provide confidence to others.

- Speak plainly about sensitive subjects, but also look for ways to soften your approach at times.

- Use your explosive emotional power to move undesirable obstacles out of the way of someone’s faith or ministry. Where could you strategically detonate a leadership explosion?

Summer is here!

Liturgical Ministers – Please be sure to circle the dates or set a phone reminder for the days you are scheduled to serve. With summer travel and activities, we often have many positions to fill because ministers have either forgotten their turn or not gotten a substitute. As you look for a substitute for those times you know you will be away, be sure to give your captain or lead a call so they know not to expect you. We are all grateful for your commitment and service throughout the year.

Keeping this up in the next few months will make the sacristans and captains very happy!

As a special help to us, please take note of what you wear as you prepare to come to Mass. If we need you, we would love to ask you to fill in when you are appropriately dressed for your ministry.

Newcomers Orientation July 12

If you’re new to the parish, please join your hosts Mike and Sharon Rushing next Sunday, July 12th following the 9:30am Mass. You’ll be treated to a full “docent” tour followed by a meet & greet with Fr. Jim. Donuts and some coffee sweeten the offer!

Please meet by the baptismal font immediately after Mass.

Cursillo/ Ultreya

Come share your spiritual journey with us. Our July Ultreya will be Tuesday, July 14th, 7 - 8:30pm in Parish Center Room 6.

All Catholic men and women are welcome.

Secular Franciscan Order (SFO)

Are you looking for a way to follow Christ more closely?

St. Francis of Assisi created an order for laity. This way of life has attracted Christians for centuries! Secular Franciscans orient their lives by “going from gospel to life and life to gospel.” We desire to experience a “radical interior change which the gospel calls conversion.”

An informational meeting will be held on Sunday, August 16, after 11:30am Mass in Room 2. Come and see - the Franciscan way of life may be for you!
