July 12, 2015 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

From Fr. Charles: An Introduction!

I am very grateful to Father Jim for giving me the opportunity to write a little about myself, my family, my country, and my priestly vocation. I was born and raised in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Africa. The Congo, formely known as the Belgian Congo, and later as Zaire, is a country of over 71 million people. It is almost as vast as the United States east of the Mississipi. The country sits in the very heart of Africa, on the Equator. Former U.S. President John Kennedy used to say that Africa has the shape of a revolver, and the trigger is in the Congo. Even though the history of the country has been marked by much civil unrest, which explains the poverty of its population, the numerous mineral, human, and agricultural resources of the Congo could turn the country into an affluent one if we had responsible political leaders.

I am the oldest of four boys and have four sisters. Both my parents, Jean Marie and Cecile, are alive. My name, Mbuyi, is generally given to a twin, but my twin sister passed away at age 10. My middle name, Banduku, means brothers. From this middle name, I am called to share life with others because people are more important than things.

My vocation to the priesthood started from my childhood, mainly because of the good work that I saw performed by priests who were assigned to my home parish. I was fascinated by their good hearts, their kindness, and their deep spirituality. In 1985, I was admitted to middle and high school seminary in the Congo. I graduated from high school in 1990 and the next year entered the minor philosophical seminary. I entered major seminary in 1993 and was ordained to the priesthood on July 19, 1998. I worked for four years in a parish in the Congo as a Parochial Vicar and two years as rector of a middle and high school seminary . At the end of my first term, I was sent to Kinshasa, the capital city, for further studies. It was there that the ordinary of my diocese asked me to go to Milwaukee under an agreement between our respective dioceses. Given that we do not speak English in the Congo, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee asked me to study English and American social and religious cultures in preparation for my ministry. From 2008 to 2011, I served in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee as a Chaplain at Dominican High School. The end of my tenure in Milwaukee coincided with an unsafe political situation in the Congo. My bishop decided it would be in my best interest to remain in a safe environment during this time. He allowed me to go Cardinal Stritch University and acquire further knowledge in Religious Studies for my future pastoral ministry. Now, with the help of the Archdiocese of Seattle, my bishop wants me to acquire some direct experience in a parish setting.

I am very grateful to Archbishop Sartain for allowing me to do pastoral work in the Archdiocese of Seattle. I thank Father Jim Lee, and the whole Saint Michael Parish community from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me so warmly. I ask God to continue to pour all his heavenly blessings upon this parish.

From Fr. Jim: An International Church

It is a joy to have Fr. Charles introduce himself to you as he begins his ministry here with us. He is a reminder to us, as were Fr. Dwight and Fr. Michael, that the Catholic Church is truly “universal.” The Gospel has been spread throughout the world at the command of Jesus. We, too are sent by Jesus to bring the “joy of the Gospel” as Pope Francis reminds us so often. We are all called to be “missionary disciples” who are the good news of Jesus in the world today.

As I write this, Pope Francis has begun his apostolic journey through Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay. He is going to some of the poorest and smallest of countries in Latin America. He is once again reaching out the “periphery” in order to spread the Gospel. Let us follow his example and reach out to those who have no church home, who don’t believe or who have drifted away from the practice of the faith.

A simple entry point for many can be the Parish Picnic next Sunday. We will begin at 5pm with “Mass on the Grass” outside under the covered play area, followed by an evening of foods, family fun activities, an adult beer garden and finally celebrating with Lake Fair fireworks. No hassle parking! No worry of fireworks setting off wildfires! Please plan on joining us. Bring your friends and neighbors. May they see our faith in action.

In Christ, I love you,

Page 4: Olympia, WA · sending thank-you notes more regularly, you’ve got to make it easy on yourself. You can do that by having a set of thank-you cards on hand at all times—in your

stewardship

Gratitude with Grace.Writing thank-you notes seems to be a lost art. Most of the time, thanks can expressed in person, with a quick text or email, or even through a post on social media. Some occasions, though, warrant a handwritten note. You should pen your appreciation for each of the following: gifts, job interviews, free overnight stays in someone’s home, free help from a professional, and any relationship moments that are especially meaningful to you.

Why writing is better than saying. Writing a thank-you note takes a little bit of time. It requires getting a card, grabbing a pen, and processing your thoughts. That’s probably why most stick with a verbal thanks—it’s quick and easy. The very act of sending a thank-you note acknowledges that the person you’re sending it to sacrificed time for you. Your note makes the warm fuzzies they felt when picking out your gift or lending a helping hand come full circle.

How to keep it simple. If you’re really going to start sending thank-you notes more regularly, you’ve got to make it easy on yourself. You can do that by having a set of thank-you cards on hand at all times—in your purse or stashed in an easy-to-grab location at your house. Then as soon as one of the occasions men-tioned above takes place, grab a card and get to writing. Keep your message simple and don’t overdo it. If your gushing sounds like too much, it probably is.

A few etiquette tips and tricks 1. Challenge yourself to begin the note with anything but “Thank you.” Instead use words that express the why behind your thanks. You might start with “We had such a wonderful time staying with you and your family” or “How did you know that dark chocolate is my absolute favorite treat?” 2. Be sure to appreciate the person and the time you spent with them, not just the material items you received. 3. Have your kids participate in sending thank-you notes for birthday gifts. Depending on age, this might mean they write out the entire card or just sign their name. For kids who love art, a drawing is a perfectly acceptable way to say thanks. There is, of course, one exception to all of these rules: If you have a new baby and a friend tells you you’re off the hook for sending her a thank-you card, by all means, please take her up on the offer. For the rest of us, there’s no excuse. Jotting a quick note of gratitude takes time but not much of it. Keep thank-you cards nearby and be on the lookout for a reason to write.

FPU Update

Our spring classes were a huge success and we would like to recognize the hard work the participants did to improve their financial well-being. At the end of nine weeks they had cumulatively paid off $40,191 of non-mortgage debt and saved $46,715! And, 22 credit cards were cut up! If you missed this session, we will be offering these life-changing classes again in the Fall. Dates and times will be posted as soon as we have them finalized. Hope to see you there!

If you have flowers to contribute for Mass at the Westside Chapel please call Benedetta Reece by Saturday at (360) 489-7634. We will need to receive them before 8am Sunday morning.

Secular Franciscan Order (SFO)

Are you looking for a way to follow Christ more closely?

St. Francis of Assisi created an order for laity. This way of life has attracted Christians for centuries! Secular Franciscans orient their lives by “going from gospel to life and life to gospel.” We desire to experience a “radical interior change which the gospel calls conversion.”

An informational meeting will be held on Sunday, August 16, after 11:30am Mass in Room 2. Come and see - the Franciscan way of life may be for you!

Help us begin to transform the annual picnic into Olympia’s biggest block party! It’s the perfect occasion for outreach, hospitality, community, and evangelization! We want SMP to become a real family alternative to the often “colorful” envirnoment of Lakefair. Make plans now to bring friends and join the fun!

The St. Francis Pledge is a promise and a commitment by individuals, families, parishes, organizations and institutions to live our faith by protecting God’s Creation and advocating on behalf of people in poverty who face the harshest impacts of global climate change. We commit to act on each of the five elements of the St. Francis Pledge.

We Pledge to:

PRAY and reflect on the duty to care for God’s Creation and protect the poor and vulnerable.

LEARN about and educate others on the causes and moral dimensions of climate change.

ASSESS how we-as individuals and in our families, parishes and other affiliations-contribute to climate change by our own energy use, consumption, waste, etc.

ACT to change our choices and behaviors to reduce the ways we contribute to climate change.

ADVOCATE for Catholic principles and priorities in climate change discussions and decisions, especially as they impact those who are poor and vulnerable.
