The PACTS Project
§ PACTS - An innovative Primary care program Advancing Competency To Supportfamily violence survivors
June 2015
PACTS MEERG 2
What was the problem?
§ No increase in violence teaching in 20 years
despite growing evidence of health impacts;§ Dispersed student clinical and education
experiences;§ If no champions “falls off” the curriculum;§ Hidden curriculum “too hard” “no expert”
interpreted by students as = “not important”;§ A problem across disciplines.

Overarching Aim
§ This project aims to embed learning and teaching on family violence in undergraduate primary health care curricula in Australia to ensure graduates have the skills to intervene and help survivors of family violence cease to be victims and recover from the trauma

Why BOTHER?
June 2015
PACTS MEERG 10
Rationale
§ 57-82% practitioners felt that they would benefit from
further training in asking questions and supporting
survivors
§ In 2009, the majority of Australian medical schools had
less than 2 hours of teaching (predominately lectures
and small group teaching) on family violence, with the
maximum taught being 4 hours
§ In 2013 WHO released clinical guidelines and identified
violence training as essential for health care providers
§ A challenge
§ Fun to work on a teaching resource with a multidiscipline
team
June 2015
PACTS MEERG 11
Innovation in vocational learning
§ Multi-disciplinary learning model
§ A safe learning environment, before students address
family violence in real world practice
§ A model for other complex areas in health

§ “I want to thank you for encouraging us to do the PACTS program. I did it during my mid semester break, and found it very interesting. It led me to go to the local police station to meet with the 2 domestic violence social workers who work there. Now I am working on an assignment … about the links between domestic violence and health. None of which would have happened without the PACTS program. So, thank you.”
§ Unsolicited student email to course coordinator.

§ “In our classes a few times, we watched a video and I was in tears, and I couldn’t recover for a few days, because content was just too much of a shock. I like having the option of whether you watch video or not, or read text, or sometimes - maybe just going very easy [is important]. Some people might be very sensitive.”
§ Focus group 1 participant.§ *Student attitude data still to be analysed

§ Everything takes longer than you think§ IT was particularly challenging§ Doing this project has been more rewarding than
we ever dreamed!
