I have attached a couple of photos to the newsletter. One is the swearing in of our officers for 2021. The other is of an afghan crocheted by NARFE member Jean Bell with assistance from Linda Kirkland pictured in the photo. The afghan, as you can see is of the American flag and is a real work of art. We wanted to find a deserving veteran to present it to. The recipient was Karin Miller, pictured in the photo. I was introduced to Karin by a friend of mine who works for the Veteran’s Center in Sarasota. The center provides counseling for veterans experiencing various service-related issues. Karin is a veteran who served two deployments, is the single mother of two teenagers and is a registered nurse who works for the VA in St. Petersburg. At the presentation she shared her life story with us and we feel we couldn’t have made a better selection of a vet to receive the afghan. Thank you for your service Karin. As we move into a new year we are confronted with our ongoing problem of a shrinking membership. We are doing our best to continue to hold the group together but really need your help. If you know of any active or retired federal workers please introduce them to NARFE and talk up the benefits. ~Ron Cibolski

They wont believe this happened but it DID Harry amp Bess

(This seems unreal)Harry Truman was a different kind of President He probably made as many ormore important decisions regarding our nations history as any of the other 32Presidents preceding him However a measure of his greatness may rest onwhat he did after he left the White House The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in which was in

Independence Missouri His wife had inherited the house from her mother andfather and other than their years in the White House they lived their entire livesthere When he retired from office in 1952 his income was a US Army pensionreported to have been $1350772 a year Congress noting that he was payingfor his stamps and personally licking them granted him an allowance andlater a retroactive pension of $25000 per year After President Eisenhower was inaugurated Harry and Bess drove home toMissouri by themselves There was no Secret Service following them When offered corporate positions at large salaries he declined stating Youdont want me You want the office of the President and that doesnt belong tome It belongs to the American people and its not for sale Even later on May 6 1971 when Congress was preparing to award him theMedal of Honor on his 87th birthday he refused to accept it writing I dontconsider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any awardCongressional or otherwiseAs president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on thePresidency resulting in untold wealth Today too many in Congress also havefound a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their officesPolitical offices are now for sale Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed My choices in lifewere either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician And to tell thetruth theres hardly any difference We ought to have cloned him Enjoy life now -- it has an expiration date
