Dear Parishioners,
“for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”
These stirring words from this weekend’s passage from the Prophet Isaiah, has so much power during this time of pandemic. Our beautiful church, which for all of us has been a “house of prayer,” has been limited in its access as a result of Covid precautions.
We have all needed to discover and recognize alternative, “houses of prayer”. Some have come upon the Hellerman Garden here at OL. Perhaps an early morning coffee on your deck or a walk in the neighborhood have become a new spiritual space as we continue to adjust to the “new normal” at this challenging time.
I believe the Prophet is calling us to be open to the reality that we are surrounded by the sacred. Gradually we are reopening. For all of us a new appreciation for our beautiful church and the blessed gift of the Eucharist has emerged during this time of deprivation. I long for the day when we can all
return to our “house of prayer” here at OLPH.
It is hard to believe it has been over 6 months since the WHO declared Covid 19 a pandemic. I can’t thank you enough for your
changes to our lives and daily patterns.
Over the past six months I have seen so many people at their very best. The temptation is to brood in the grip of resentment,
comfort and hope in the sentiment, “we are all in this together”!
I am so grateful to our staff here at OLPH that have had to carry on with their responsibilities under unprecedented situations:
Mike Hrvojevic and his staff have gone out of their way to ensure the safety of us all. With 10 buildings this is no easy task. With Mike’s advice we have methodically proceeded through the shut down and the reopening process. Mike has done remarkable research on the most cost effective and Covid prevention equipment. OLPH has been exemplary in this regard.
Terry Luc our Communications Director has led us to ways of communicating that would have been unimaginable 6 months ago.
collaborative efforts with Jim Geldemann and Rob Orr have been game-changing.
Laura Kearneytrying to establish consistent procedures. The sign-up process and safety protocols are all meant for our communal safety. We are
Randy McGraw stepped up to the plate when we needed an Interim Director of Religious Education. He oversaw an inventory of our religious education supplies, launched the registration process and helped us schedule almost 20 services so that all our children in sacramental programs could receive their sacraments. In recent weeks, his wife Geri helped to get things in order to assist Margaret Waldron in her transition as our new Director.
Russel Stern has been so helpful as we adjust to ever changing protocols regarding music at liturgies. His ability to adapt has maintained our excellent music ministry because it will be quite a while before we have choirs at our masses.
Amy Mills has been tremendous in preparing the school for in house student learning. This is extremely complicated, but she and her staff will have everything in place for a safe and proactive opening. I also appreciate the efforts the faculty is going through to prepare. Just about every aspect of a typical day at school is no longer typical!
Jim DollardDirector, Mary Lynne Januszewskimid-March.
Margie Andre has been so patient in dealing with the ever-changing schedules as situations call for new schedules.
My brother priests have been a tremendous support at this time. It is inspiring to me to see their openness to some of the limitations imposed on our public ministry. Fr. Patrick and Fr. support of the parish during this time. In addition to dramatic decreases in fund raising and other sources of income, we have had to make a substantial investment in equipment and products related to providing a safe environment considering Covid. We must make investments in infrastructure and technology. We had to purchase over 30 portable sinks for the school to minimize the surfaces children need to touch. The technology requirements
investments because the current realities suggest we are going to be dealing with all of this for several months if not years.
We are trying to do the best we can in terms of communicating schedules, events and services. I encourage you to always check the parish web site for the latest information. If you are not on our Friday e-blast, please send us your email. I know it can be confusing and frustrating when you Google OLPH and rely on information that can be several years old. The challenge for all institutions and businesses is dealing
because of state and diocesan restrictions.
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Maria Nieto who passed way this week. Gregoria as we knew her, served as the housekeeper and cook at OLPH for 18 years. She was a blessing to us all.
Don’t forget our back to school drive by blessings next Sunday between 10:00 and 11:30 am.
