    Dear Parishioners,

“you shall love your neighbor as yourself”

We are beginning to enter the final weeks of the liturgical year that concludes on Nov. 22nd with the Feast of Christ the King. The readings begin taking an ominous tone as we reflect on the “end times”. There is a foretelling of an accounting that will be taken as to the way we have lived, the choices we have made, the witness we have given.

The readings are filled with invitations and challenges as to how we should live our lives. The readings challenge us to reflect not only personally, but to reflect on the community we live in and the larger society we are part of.

I would invite all of us to take time to reflect on all three readings, they present a moral foundation out of how we might make our choices as we prepare to vote. Beginning with the first reading from Exodus, to St. Paul’s Letter to the Thessalonians, to the Gospel of Matthew, we are invited to be “imitators of the Lord”.

The Gospel is a succinct statement of the whole of Jesus’ teachings, to love God and to love one another. It sets the standard out of which we can live out our lives.

We had a wonderful meeting this past week of the Parish Pastoral Council under the leadership of Susan Logan. The next major project is the Annual Summit on November 7th. The Summit gathers all those involved in ministerial leadership. This event will be by Zoom and will feature Fr. Steve Katsouros SJ, former President of Pedro Arrupe College of Loyola University. It will be a great gathering and I hope many can attend.

Last weekend’s celebrations of First Communion were terrific. Special thanks to Dr. Amy Mills and her staff that planned a beautiful liturgy for the four celebrations.

Thank you for your generous support of our “Catch Up” appeal. We are closing the gap with our budget and collections received.

Considering all the protocols, many spaces on campus are being repurposed to keep us safe. People have been asking about how we are celebrating the sacrament of confession in light of the protocols of social distancing. We hear confessions Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. After you enter Lady Chapel off Grove Street, the greeter will lead you to the chapel to await an available confessor. We have converted the old baptistry to a Reconciliation Room. You can have your confession heard face to face or behind a screen. There is plenty of room and it is very private. It will be a long time before we will be able to return to confessionals so this room will serve in this capacity. Considering the liturgical reforms, baptistries are discouraged because of the theological shifts to highlight the sacraments of initiation; baptism, eucharist and confirmation. The font should be visible to the worshipping community. We also convert the sacristy on the other side for confessions as well.

This past week we were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Fr. Matt Gamber SJ. He suffered a heart attack. Fr. Matt was raised here and graduated from Loyola Academy. He was just 61 and recently marked his 25th anniversary of priesthood. Reading his obituary revealed what an extraordinary priest he was. He touched the lives of people all over the world. Our hearts go out to his mother, Ruth, and all the Gambers’ at this time of loss. May he Rest in Peace.

    Sincerely,

    Fr. Jerry Boland

    Thoughts on the

Sunday ScripturesThere is one command that summarizes this weekend’s Gospel: to love.

For Jesus there is no distinction between these two commands of loving God and neighbor. One naturally flows from the other. In fact, for Jesus, these commands constitute a way of life for Christian stewards; a unique approach to life and to their relationship with others.

Our neighbors include everyone with whom we come into contact: family members, friends, people we don’t like, strangers and particularly those most in need of our love and compassion. Love calls us to open our hearts and do more to help others grow closer to the Lord. How might we follow Christ’s love command more fervently?

The Sharing MinistryPlease remember: The Sharing Room remains closed during the Covid crisis. Do not drop off items outside of the Sharing Room. We CANNOT ACCEPT DONATIONS at this time.

Food DonationsShould you want to donate non-perishable food, please donate directly to the Northfield Township Food Pantry, 2550 Waukegan Road (rear of building) while the Sharing Room remains closed due to Covid.

You can also make a monetary donation directly to our sharing parishes so that they can purchase what is most needed in their pantries. Mail your donations to:

St. James Social Care2907 S. Wabash, Chicago, IL 60616Attn: Cathy Moore

Our Lady of Tepeyac Food Pantry2226 S. Whipple St.Chicago, IL 60623Attn: Donna Oborski

A Befriend a Family Appeal…"The Corona pandemic has affected my life in many ways. Me being a barber, I have lost many clients. My wife and mother of my kids has lost her job. Bills are overdue, rent overdue, can’t afford to get our car fixed. We are in danger of it going out. Unemployment hasn’t kicked in yet."

We are looking for donors to provide holiday support for needy families, such as the one featured in the letter above. We are looking to support as many as 175 families from our sharing parishes as well as local families served by Sr. Paulanne. This year all giving will be through gift cards for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

We assign families based upon your preference for family size. You can also decide if you want to support a local family or one through our sharing parishes. You will receive a family profile. Giving is done anonymously. Contact Stacy Dolan, [email protected], for more info.

Volunteer to Serve Homeless at Catholic Charities/Des PlainesCatholic Charities continues to feed the needy on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. In lieu of a sit-down dinner, guests are provided a To Go meal. OLPH will be providing this meal on Nov. 5 and we are looking for volunteers to help make this happen. Contact Kathy Quinn, [email protected] if you can participate.

Clothing and Housewares DonationsThe Sharing Room remains closed due to Covid. In the past, clothing donations we received were carefully sorted and most donated items were sent to agencies which serve the needy. Higher end items and items with tags were sent to the Glenview Community Church Resale Shop. This resale shop then gave Sr. Paulanne 50% of the proceeds from OLPH items they were able to sell. Items not sold were donated to Salvation Army. This resale shop sent the balance of their funds to charities which they support; all proceeds effectively benefitting charity.

While the Sharing Room remains closed, consider donating your new or very gently used, in trend, clean items to the Glenview Community Church Resale Shop, New to You, located at 1000 Elm St. They will be open and accepting donations on Wed., Fri., and Sat. between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm and on Thu. from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Please mark your donations OLPH, so that Sr. Paulanne will receive 50% of proceeds for her work with the needy. Wear a mask and observe social distancing during donation drop off or shopping.

Shop Jewel For Turkey Dinners for SharingJewel Foods (Patriot and Lake) is once again collecting for holiday dinners for Sharing. We will receive fully cooked turkeys and side dishes for Thanksgiving and Hams and sides for Christmas. We will distribute to Sr. Paulanne's Needy Family Fund clients, our sharing parishes as they express need and other outlets we serve.

Please consider shopping at the store and donate at the registers.

seek, share, rejoice - domestic violence awareness month... The OLPH Domestic Violence Awareness MinistryThe OLPH Domestic Violence Awareness Ministry shares the following statistics relating to domestic related incidents occurring in Glenview in 2019 and 2020. This information was provided to share with our parish by Julie Fleckenstein, LCSW with the Village of Glenview Police Department.

There are 2 domestic violence report classifications the police can take:

Domestic Battery: is when a person causes bodily harm to any family or household member or has contact of an insulting and provoking nature with any family or household member putting the family member in fear of a battery. This type of behavior can result in an arrest.

Domestic Trouble: is when there is conflict within a family unit that does not rise to the level of physical violence- typically this is a verbal argument between family members.

Date Domestic Battery Reports Arrests Domestic Trouble Reports

    Jan 1- Dec 31, 2019 176 22 224

    Mar 1- Sept 1, 2019 91 13 118

    Mar 1- Sept 1, 2020 98 7 121

    Covid-19 (2020)

    Stay at home- phase 4

    Mar 21- June 26, 2020 55 5 68

    June 27- Sept 1, 2020 29 2 50

Glenview, Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2019: There were 176 Domestic Battery Reports, 22 were severe enough to end with an arrest, with 224 Domestic Trouble reports during this same period.

The Covid-19 shut down was concerning to many domestic violence programs as there was concern if victims would be able to call to report domestic incidents.

Glenview, Covid-19 pandemic Mar. 1, 2020- Sep. 1, 2020: There were 98 Domestic Battery reports resulting in 7 arrests, and 121 Domestic Trouble reports.

For the same time period in 2019 there were 91 Domestic Battery reports with 13 arrests and 118 Domestic Trouble reports. Specifically, when looking at the time period of the Stay at Home order on Mar. 21 - Jun. 26, there were 55 Domestic Battery reports, with 5 arrests and 68 Domestic Trouble Reports. The most recent period of Jun. 27 - Sep. 1, there were 29 Domestic Battery reports with 2 arrests and 50 Domestic Trouble reports. We can see that there was an increase in domestic violence reports during the Covid-19 Stay at Home Order.

For our families, may they know God’s love and may they share this love with the kindness and consideration for one another, free from abuse and controlling behaviors, we pray to the Lord.

“It doesn’t matter how rich or poor a person is, what gender or social class, or how much fame or education she possesses. Verbal, mental, and physical abuse can happen to anyone. It doesn’t matter what a woman’s ethnicity is because the only distinguishing color of abuse is black-and-blue.” - La Toya Jackson

MYTH: Victims provoke their partners’ violence.

FACT: Whatever problems exist in a relationship; the use of violence is never justifiable or acceptable.

There is NO EXCUSE for domestic violence.

MYTH: Domestic Violence can occur in older women, but it is quite rare.

FACT: Approximately half of all elder abuse in women is thought to be domestic violence “grown old.” Older battered women are less likely to seek and receive help.

Respect Life MinistrySmall Change—Big ImpactHelp young mothers who find themselves in difficult circumstances.

The OLPH Respect Life Ministry will continue to support local crisis pregnancy centers with the Baby Bottle Project during the month of October. Due to Covid related issues we will be holding a Virtual Baby Bottle collection.

Instead of returning a bottle full of coins, bills and checks, we are asking supporters to use our OLPH GiveCentral portal to support mothers in crisis situations. Your gifts will help those served by Aid for Women and The Women’s Center, who counsel and support mothers considering abortion. Financial and material support for these women has continued without interruption throughout the Covid crisis.

Go to Givecentral.org to make your donation. On the electronic version of this Bulletin, click the baby bottle image below.

Project Rachel Post-Abortion HealingUnderstanding Abortion’s Aftermath

Since 1973, there have been more than 45 million abortions in the United States. While some women report relatively low trauma following abortion, for many, the experience is devastating, causing severe and long-lasting emotional, psychological and spiritual upset

Many women who have walked a path of grief and hopelessness after abortion feel a deep spiritual wound. Sadly, they also are likely to believe that they have committed ‘the unforgivable sin’ and fear God’s anger.

Women who have had an abortion often have many questions, the answers to which are indispensable to beginning the healing journey. Can God ever forgive me? Can my child? Can I ever forgive myself? Will the Church let me stay when I confess this sin? Will this horrible pain ever go away? Is healing possible?

The answer to all these questions is, of course: Yes.

For more information on the Project Rachel Post-Abortion Healing, on the electronic version of this Bulletin, click the yellow Project Rachel icon here.
