COLLEGE PRAYER

Risen Lord, We thank you for all the blessings we have received over Holy Week and Easter. May the Risen Christ remain alive in our hearts, our words and our actions through these coming weeks. We thank you for loving us so much that you would send us your only Son, so that we might truly know your love and power. Amen

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear O’Loughlin Community,

I hope this finds you rested and refreshed after the Easter break. Here at O’Loughlin, we are all ready to work with renewed energy over the next two weeks to complete a successful term.

The times for Parent Teacher interviews have been changed and I think that they will give us all more of an opportunity to meet with our childrens’ teachers. The times are:

Thursday 12 April (Week 11, Term One)

Thursday 3 May (Week 2, Term Two) - Both nights go from 3:30pm to 8:00pm

We will be sending out the booking forms and instructions via email this week. I am looking forward to meeting with as many families as possible over the two nights. (I am also excited about meeting my daughter’s teachers to discuss her progress in Year 12.)

Congratulations to all our students, and their incredibly supportive families, who played in the AFL finals. It was really wonderful to watch many of the games, to hear all the stories (whether the players won or lost) and to see all the beaming faces in the Premiership photos published in the NT NEWS. Commitment, hard work and determination get teams into a Grand final and I know that all players have benefitted from their involvement in the sport. Success in school is exactly the same - commitment, hard work and determination will give our students the best opportunities to do well.

Our students have also been involved in school sport and there have been many excellent reports regarding school spirit, fair play, sportsmanship and teamwork demonstrated by our teams. Within the context of the ‘cheating’ by our Men’s Cricket Team, it is great to hear that our young people do understand the importance of these values and we will continue to encourage and foster them at O’Loughlin.

All the best.

Rhett Bowden

HARMONY WEEK – CROQUEMBOUCHE DISPLAY As part of Harmony Week celebrations a number of students helped to assemble a traditional French Wedding cake (Croquembouche). The individual pastries (made from choux pastry) were filled with Chantilly cream and decorated with chocolate and toffee strawberries.

Congratulations to the students involved (Therese Hockey; Mackenzie Bunn; Teaghan Coutts; Allanah Joyce) in assembling and decorating the croquembouche to such a high standard. Their efforts were appreciated by the many students and teachers who sampled the pastries with all donations going to Caritas Australia.

Ancestors (Gender: Both)

Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: A3

The Ancestors should have strong focus as they are observing the action throughout. They also need to be strong actor/singers that can carry solo work. It is helpful for them to match what they represent in either manner or physical type. Laozi (pronounced LAU-tsi) represents Honor and is the leader of the group. Lin represents Loyalty and is the hardest on Mulan; Lin does not appreciate any challenges to the old-world belief system. ZHANG (ZANG) represents Strength, the strong silent type. Hong represents Destiny and is Laozi's right-hand man. Yun (YOON) represents Love and is Mulan's greatest advocate from the beginning - the mother figure that eventually encourages the others to support Mulan for who she is.

Fa Zhou (Gender: Male) Fa Zhou (fa ZOO), Mulan's father, should be cast with a confident and calm performer who has a strong presence and can sing, at least a little. Without playing "older," his calm strength contrasts with Mulan's frenetic energy at the top of the show. We see that Mulan is truly her father's daughter when she grows wise through her journey.

Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: C4

Happening Week 1 and 2 Term 2.

Casting – Mulan Jr (character breakdown)

Page 10: OLoughlin Catholic College · play around while dressing up like maidens during the show's climax. Vocal range top: A5 Vocal range bottom: E4 Ling (Gender: Male) Yao, Ling and Qian-Po

Fa Li (Gender: Female)

Fa Li, Mulan's mother, is someone who also possesses strength but understands her place in her generation and culture. There is a definite wisdom that she passes on to Mulan, so use a smart actor who is able to carry a tune. Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: C4

Grandmother Fa (Gender: Female)

Grandmother Fa - again, age is not the concern here, but cast a performer who can covey wisdom and humor. Grandmother sees greatness in Mulan, but still wants her to achieve it through tradition. Although she does not need to be a strong singer, an actor with mischief in her eye will work well here. Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: Bb3

Mulan (Gender: Female)

Mulan should be your strongest performer. She is on stage for most of the show and needs to carry a great deal vocally while telling the story. This young performer needs to have strength and courage in her performance and be convincing in her passion and determination to protect her father and family. Casting against a leading-lady type may help your show deliver the story in a surprising and profound way. Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: G3

Mushu (Gender: Both)

Mushu (MOO shoo) - although comedy is very important for this character (a talking dragon), remember that we have to feel sympathy for Mushu's struggle to get back into the Temple. Don't just cast your funniest performer, but one that is comfortable talking to and connecting with your audience. Vocal range top: F5 Vocal range bottom: D4

Page 11: OLoughlin Catholic College · play around while dressing up like maidens during the show's climax. Vocal range top: A5 Vocal range bottom: E4 Ling (Gender: Male) Yao, Ling and Qian-Po

The Matchmaker (Gender: Female)

The Matchmaker provides comic relief through the "straight man" approach. Cast someone with an overbearing presence who can maintain her composure through a comic scene.

Chi Fu (Gender: Male)

Chi Fu (chee FU) is your typical "bad guy," the quintessential political character, manipulative and proud to a fault. Casting someone with tremendous confidence will help you set up Chi Fu's authority early on. It might be fun to have him model a famous political leader. Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: E4

Shan-yu (Gender: Male)

Shan-Yu (shawn YU) - You want an actor who can command of the stage here - someone with tremendous presence who can convince the audience that he can lead an invasion. Casting an actor of size may be helpful, but is not a necessity.

Shang (Gender: Male)

Shang needs to have strength, but also the openness to learn from Mulan. Casting a brawny guy with no heart will weaken the relationship between Mulan and Shang. Remember he is general's son but has a brain too. He needs to be a strong vocalist and should a good stage presence. Vocal range top: F5 Vocal range bottom: D4

Page 12: OLoughlin Catholic College · play around while dressing up like maidens during the show's climax. Vocal range top: A5 Vocal range bottom: E4 Ling (Gender: Male) Yao, Ling and Qian-Po

Yao (Gender: Male)

Yao, Ling and Qian-Po (cheeann-PO) - "the Guys" - should be able to work as a team but be diverse in type to help distinguish them from the other Chinese Soldiers. Yao considers himself to be a big tough guy; he has a bark and bite, but all in all a good person. Casting a trio of actors who are willing to have fun is important. They need to be misfits in the army, like Mulan, and able to really play around while dressing up like maidens during the show's climax. Vocal range top: A5 Vocal range bottom: E4

Ling (Gender: Male)

Yao, Ling and Qian-Po (cheeann-PO) - "the Guys" - should be able to work as a team but be diverse in type to help distinguish them from the other Chinese Soldiers. Ling is a bit of a scam artist, and not the brightest guy in the world. Casting a trio of actors who are willing to have fun is important. They need to be misfits in the army, like Mulan, and able to really play around while dressing up like maidens during the show's climax.

Vocal range top: A5 Vocal range bottom: E4

Qian-po (Gender: Male)

Yao, Ling and Qian-Po (cheeann-PO) - "the Guys" - should be able to work as a team but be diverse in type to help distinguish them from the other Chinese Soldiers. Qian-Po is a real sweetheart of a monk who would rather have a good meal than a battle scene. Casting a trio of actors who are willing to have fun is important. They need to be misfits in the army, like Mulan, and able to really play around while dressing up like maidens during the show's climax. Vocal range top: A5 Vocal range bottom: E4

Ensemble (Gender: Both)

The Ensemble provides sound effects throughout the show, but also steps into the action when needed to play Fathers, Mothers, Daughters, Sons, Dressmakers, Hairdressers, Groomers, Young Hsaio, Older Yi, Young Yi, Magyar, Subar-Tu, Chen, Liu and the Cheongsam Salesperson. The featured roles vary in size and vocal requirements, but the Ensemble will be needed to provide vocal power throughout and dance in the production numbers, so be sure to cast performers with a wide base of ability. DISHING UP DARWIN - OCC

The annual Dishing up Darwin cooking competition is just around the corner and congratulations go to Therese Hockey (Year 10) and Mackenzie Bunn (Year 8) who have been selected as O’Loughlin College’s representatives.

During Week 9 students who had expressed an interest in participating in the competition competed against each other by preparing a Chicken and Cheese Quesadillas dish. Students were required to prepare tortillas, a chicken and cheese filling, along with a salsa, and to present their finished dish.

All students are to be congratulated on the range of skills demonstrated and the quality of their food presentation.

Heats are to be held on Saturday 21 April at Darwin High School, with the final being held at Darwin Waterfront on Sunday 22 April. The team will spend coming weeks refining their kitchen skills in readiness for the competition.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL COMPETITION Congratulations to our Middle School boys and girls who represented O’Loughlin Catholic College at the Interschool Basketball competition held Thursday March 22nd. O’Loughlin sent two Middle School boys’ teams and one Middle School girls’ team. The competition was fierce and our students played hard, determined, and demonstrated their high level of skill and outstanding sportsmanship.

The girls trained hard in the lead up to the carnival and this was evident in their team play. They worked hard in every game and often played against older and more experienced players. Overall their fighting spirit was impressive.

The middle school boys team two played hard and showed great skill, especially while playing hard full court pressure defence. The boys showed great sportsmanship and team spirit, encouraging and cheering for each other on and off the court. The boys eventually came 1st in their pool undefeated.

Photograph: Undefeated Boys Team 2

The middle school boys team three played in pool B. The team improved as the day progressed due to an increase in their confidence, and students who had never played before beginning to learn the rules. In total the team of ten students won a game and finished fourth overall. They had a fun day and I was proud of their behaviour and sportsmanship on and off the court.

COMMUNITY NEWS

2018 BIG BIKE RIDE

The Big Bike Ride is a 100+km ride undertaken by students, teachers, parents, and members of the O’Loughlin Community that both challenges the riders and raises awareness for a chosen cause.

In previous years, the ride has gone around the northern suburbs, out to Berry Springs, and Mandorah. This year a challenging route has been set for Adelaide River for a total of 105km. The date of the event will be Tuesday 24th April 2018 to precede ANZAC Day, and we will ride in support of Legacy.

The Australian Defence Force Regiment 8/12 is supporting our ride and will provide logistical support and a vehicle escort for the riders to Adelaide River. NT Police are also in support of the event and will provide further assistance.

This year there is an option for riders to stay overnight at Mount Bundy Station, an additional 5km from Adelaide River, and attend the Adelaide River ANZAC Day Dawn Service on Wednesday 25th April before returning to Darwin. This is an additional part of the event and transport options back to Darwin will be provided for those returning on either Tuesday 24th or Wednesday 25th April.

For those staying overnight, and attending the ANZAC Day Dawn Service, we will camp at Mount Bundy Station with an option of borrowing tents from school or the ADF. Riders will need to provide their own sleeping equipment, either swags or camp mats and sleeping bag. Dinner will be provided as well as transport to the dawn service the following morning. Following the Dawn Service, a community breakfast is held at the Adelaide River Race Course. Participants will attend the breakfast before returning to Darwin.

Legacy is a charity that provides services to Australian families suffering after the injury or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service. The Big Bike Ride will support and raise awareness for Legacy. Further information and donations can be found at http://www.legacy.com.au

Due to Easter Monday, an additional training session will be held on Friday 6th April (Week 10), from 3:15 to 5:30pm. Additionally, during the holidays, two morning sessions will be held; on Monday 16th April and Wednesday 18th April. These will be longer sessions and will go from 8:30am until 12:00pm. Students are strongly encouraged to attend at least one of these sessions in the holidays to have at least one extended ride before the day.

On Wednesday 11th April (Week 11) there will be a Parent/Guardian information meeting held after the training ride in room MK1 at the College. This will go from 5:30 – 6:00pm and will cover the essential logistics and final preparations for the day.

Please contact Mr Max Jones at the College for additional information.
