a note From the artistiC direCtor
shortly after D-Day in June 1944, my 17-year old Dad enlisted in the army (that’s his Army photo in place of my own). As he was donning a uniform for the first time, a bunch of talented 25-year olds – Leonard bernstein, betty comden, Adolph Green and Jerome Robbins – were working on their own war effort: writing a broadway show about three sailors on 24-hour liberty in New york. by the time my Dad finished training less than six months later, On the Town had opened to rapturous reviews, catapulting the foursome to the top of American musical theater.
On the Town celebrated the freedom that millions of Americans were fighting for in europe and the Pacific. The script doesn’t mention the carnage Gabey, Ozzie, and chip might have witnessed before sailing into the brooklyn Navy yard (though we know Gabey received a medal for saving his two pals, who now consider him a hero). Whatever darkness they encountered, though, evaporates with the show’s first pizzicato chord. Riding the waves of bernstein’s sublime score, the boys plunge into the city looking for love, and a reminder of why they’re fighting. As bernstein said, “the subject matter was light, but the show was serious.”
As i look back on this, our 80th season, so many of the shows we’ve shared – Our Town, Every Brilliant Thing, In the Heights among them – asked us as audience members and creators, what do you do with the precious time you’re given? On the Town answers with brash ebullience: pursue a human connection, and when you find it, hold onto it tightly for as long as you can.
i’m thinking about this lesson a lot since my Dad passed away last month, at the age of 91. He was a Depression baby, attended college through the Gi bill, and raised a family working six days a week as an accountant. When we kids found our careers, my Dad and stepmother moved to Arizona where, for the better part of eleven years, he lived his best life, taking advantage of every precious moment he was granted. so i’m dedicating my work on this show to his memory, in hopes i’ll learn to do the same every day.
This production commemorates two other precious moments: we’re celebrating Olney Theatre center’s 80th birthday with this show, and the world is celebrating what would have been bernstein’s 100th birthday. it’s right we should honor these milestones with On the Town, a gift of maximum delight to its audience.
i’ll close by saying that i wanted this show to be a gift to myself, too! Not only is this the 50th show i’ve produced at Olney, but i turn 50 this summer! so i gathered some of my favorite artists in Dc (who also happen to be close friends) to bring this wonderful script to life. in addition to beloved collaborators chris youstra, Tara Jeanne Vallee, and the rest of the creative team, we have a murderer’s row of local stars: evan casey, sam Ludwig, Donna Migliaccio, Tracy Lynn Olivera, bobby smith, and Rachel Zampelli are just six of the amazing twenty-two actors with whom i’m blessed to work. i hope the joy and delight of our time together communicates to you across the footlights.
Olney’s 80th birthday is an amazing milestone that you’ve helped us to reach (you can join us for our free open-house-birthday-party, summerFest, on July 28). in the meantime, let’s remember to make the most of every precious moment we’re given. i look forward to hearing what you think about On the Town and your favorite shows of the 80th season at [email protected].

Jason Loewith (Artistic Director/Director of On The Town) grew up in Fairfield, connecticut, and on weekends he took the train to New york with his family to see shows. His dad was the comptroller of a Formica manufacturing company, and his mom was the first woman in the state to be president of a conservative synagogue. After her parents became ill, she took over their dress shop in a now sadly derelict part of bridgeport. Jason particularly enjoyed hiding in the poufy dresses on the rack, and selling costume jewelry during the store’s annual sidewalk sale. He inherited his father’s love of numbers, working part-time as a bank teller, and leading Math Team in high school and as a bookkeeper for various nonprofit organizations as an adult. From his mother he inherited a dedication to Jewish causes, joining the international board of united synagogue youth and working at the Jewish Home for the Aged during high school, and serving as chair of brown university’s committee for soviet Jewry as an undergraduate. Jason seriously considered studying to become a rabbi, but the theater intervened, taking him to santa barbara, Los Angeles, New york city, chicago, and finally the Washington, Dc region, where he’s been for eight years. Jason has directed some 30 plays, written a handful, managed or produced hundreds, and done just about every other job there is to do in a theater--all of which has helped him learn the value of a dollar, the importance of honesty, and the fact that you do not put a silk suit in either the washing machine or the dryer. On days off, Jason loves to cook (ask him how he learned to make bouillabaisse), hang out with his twelve nieces and nephews, play Civilization, bike and jog (just don’t ask the last time he did either), vacation in faraway places, and listen to music written between 1950 and 1986. He volunteers for local and national arts organizations, and has just begun volunteering for a youth mentoring organization in Dc. He lives on capitol Hill with his partner Ned and their dog Mortimer in a teeny but charming Victorian row house that is majority-owned by citibank. Jason has been the Artistic Director of Olney Theatre center since 2013.

debbie ellinghaus (Managing Director) was born in Washington, Dc. Her mother was a Montgomery county Public school math teacher and her dad was a college professor. she can trace her mother’s family back to the 1500’s when they were ousted from spain because they were Jewish. Other family ancestry connects her to eastern europe. in 1976, her parents moved to columbia, MD, where she was raised in the “new planned city” built to encourage racial, ethnic and religious harmony in a suburban utopia. Debbie, the eldest of two, did not inherit her dad’s speed on the football field, her mom’s quick serve on the tennis court, or her sister’s strength in the swimming pool; instead she found her feet in the theater, thanks in large part to her grandmother, who took her to see Annie at the Kennedy center in 1978. but also thanks to her parents, who spent sunday mornings listening to broadway show-tunes on the record player before turning on the football game. Despite her suburban upbringing, Debbie longed for the city life. so, upon graduating from the university of Maryland, she moved to New york. in the big Apple she had many jobs and met many interesting people, including Andrew, whom she married. After getting hitched, they moved to New Haven, connecticut, where they had their kids, Madeline and Griffin, and spent some years enjoying life in New england. career and family twists and turns eventually brought them to Howard county where they now live in an old farmhouse with a backyard view of a cornfield. Debbie volunteers in the community where she lives: as chair of the Downtown columbia Arts and culture commission; and in the community where she works: as a member of the board of Medstar Montgomery Medical center and the Olney chamber of commerce. she’s frequently found applauding loudly for her daughter, who’s got the “performing bug”; cheering wildly for her son at track meets; grooving to her husband’s music (he’s a drummer in a band); and spoiling her dog, a 75 lb pit-bull rescue. in her down-time she likes to run, swing kettlebells, and do the occasional yoga from the privacy of her own home. Also, thanks to her kids’ interests, she’s attempting to learn to bake and build cities with legos. she’s been employed since age 12 when she had a paper route; thankfully, gigs at universities and non-profit organizations followed. she’s been Managing Director of Olney Theatre center since August 2014.

On The TOWNin October 1943, Jerome Robbins approached Leonard bernstein with the idea of making an “immediately American” ballet. A twenty-five year old dancer for the American ballet Theatre, Robbins had been approved to choreograph the story of three sailors on leave, but he needed a score. bernstein, also twenty-five, was a composer and conductor (who would, in just a few months, skyrocket to fame after stepping in to conduct a live broadcast of the New york Philharmonic with no rehearsal when the primary conductor took ill). Robbins told bernstein the story he was pondering, based on Paul cadmus’ painting The Fleet’s In!, to which bernstein responded by humming a tune he’d written on a napkin at the Russian Tea Room earlier that afternoon. As bernstein says, “We went crazy. i began developing the theme right there.” bernstein called this meeting the beginning of “the year of miracles.”
it certainly was a year of miracles for these two artists. Robbins’ story and bernstein’s music became the ballet Fancy Free, which opened on April 18, 1944 to rapturous reviews, just six months after they first met. Robbins immediately realized the theatricality of the piece and thought of reshaping it as a combination of dance, singing, and acting, but scenic designer Oliver smith was the first to suggest that it could become a broadway musical.
A musical of that scale, naturally, needed other collaborators, so bernstein and Robbins sought out a comedic writing team: betty comden and Adolph Green, who had seen moderate success as part of The Revuers, a group of satirical writers whose shows, composed of songs, dances, and skits, were a precursor to Saturday Night Live. The following December, six months after their collaboration began, bernstein, Robbins, comden, and Green attended the opening night for their new musical on broadway: On the Town.
The average age of the four writers of the hit musical was twenty-seven, and the piece crackles with youthful energy, from Robbins’ choreography to bernstein’s score to the witty banter of comden and Green’s book and lyrics. Robbins described bernstein’s music as always having “a kinetic motor… a power in the rhythms… which had a need to be demonstrated by dance.” it is a piece in motion, as the sailors travel around New york city on their twenty-four hours of shore liberty, and all of the elements of the show worked “as an integrated unit, with story, song, and dancing all growing out of one another,” as Green’s son says.
On the Town set the stage for more and more fruitful collaborations. comden and Green became an exclusive writing team, penning the book and lyrics for musicals on stage and screen, most famously the 1952 classic, Singin’ in the Rain. in 1953, they approached bernstein with an “impossible” task: they had a story and part of a score, but needed a new composer. The impossible part? The show was set to open in four months, a challenge which bernstein readily accepted. Wonderful Town opened on broadway right on schedule. bernstein and Robbins had similarly been collaborating on another project: a contemporary Romeo and Juliet. After several attempts, this piece became West Side Story, arguably the most famous piece of musical theatre of the twentieth century.
These artists each were geniuses in their own right: bernstein’s conducting and composing career covered opera, chamber pieces, orchestral music, and more; Robbins choreographed ballets and musicals until he was nearly eighty; and comden and Green wrote more than a dozen musicals. but their careers began in collaboration, as artists in their late twenties who believed they could make something truly magnificent.
Olney Theatre center celebrates this youthful energy. This current class of National Players, our acclaimed touring company, marks its 70th tour, each with their own team of early career artists taking theatre to communities across the nation. OTc also houses sixteen apprentices, who work together in a variety of departments to contribute to and ensure the success of the theatre as a whole. These artists, of similar age to bernstein, Robbins, comden, and Green, are also at the beginning of their decades-long collaborations. Perhaps for them this, could be the beginning of their “year of miracles.”
– Timothy Huth, Dramaturg
Timothy Huth: Leonard Bernstein is one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth century. What do you think contributed to that success?
Christopher Youstra: Bernstein was a clas-sical composer who tapped into the Ameri-can common man. He was able to straddle into popular music with songs that were on the charts. Though European and Russian composers were heavily influential to him, he was very American. At the same time, he was doing a pastiche of Latin rhythms, French impressionism, Russian romanti-cism, all with an American twist.
Without West Side Story, we’d probably be talking more about him as a conduc-tor and an educator. He really caught lightning in a bottle with West Side Story though. At least half a dozen songs from it are in the American canon. Even people who don’t often go to theatre know “I Feel Pretty,” “America,” even “The Jets Song” and “Officer Krupke.” West Side Story brings up everything around it: Candide, On the Town retroactively, Fancy Free and some of the ballets.
1002018 marks the centennial of two artistic geniuses: Leonard bernstein, born August 25, 1918, and Jerome Robbins, born Octo-ber 11, 1918. Their careers start-ed when they collaborated on Fancy Free (which became On the Town) in 1943. Dramaturg Timothy Huth sat down with Mu-sic Director Christopher Youstra and Choreographer Tara Jeanne vallee to discuss the impact and legacies of bernstein and Rob-bins’ decades-long careers.
Bernstein (top) and Robbins in 1980.By Martha Swope/Billy Rose Theatre Collection,The New York Public Library.
TH: On the Town was Bernstein’s first musi-cal. Later in his career, as you mentioned, he caught lightning in a bottle with West Side Story. How do you see this show as a pre-cursor to that?
CY: You see so many motifs, rhythms, and styles in On the Town that he fleshes out in West Side Story. For a modern compari-son, you see so much of Hamilton in In the Heights. Hamilton doesn’t happen without In the Heights; Lin Manuel Miranda had to learn what he could do, infusing the differ-ent rhythms: hip hop, Latin, samba, all of that. It’s the same thing with Bernstein.
This is one of the first really jazzy scores. With this show, he was like, “This is how I can use swing, this is how I can use sax-ophones.” He’s starting to tiptoe around with swing, boogie-woogie rhythms, blues; he’s fleshing out those different mid-twenti-eth century popular music styles and put-ting them into a score, which you see more in West Side Story. It’s not like this was a dress rehearsal; it was him just starting to test the waters.
TH: Speaking of musical styles, you have the gargantuan task of orchestrating this score. What were some of the things you learned or were surprised by?
CY: There are so many polyrhythms in this show. Traditionally, all the pit is in one rhythm, but in this, there are all sorts of things going on, so many independent pieces at the same time. It makes it difficult for the piano to capture them all, because you don’t have a full pit to do it. That’s been the most interesting thing, the rhythmic com-plexity of it.
TH: This was also Jerome Robbins’ first Broadway musical, followed by many more. Why do you think Robbins was so influential in the choreography world?
Tara Jeanne Vallee: He brought a style that was more relatable. It’s a bit more pedes-trian, a heightened reality, which he uses here and again in West Side Story. He was one of the first people who really came from the ballet world and brought that into his choreography.
TH: At our first rehearsal, you mentioned that you’ve been inspired by the city, by what you see on the subway. Can you elab-orate on how the city inspires your work on this piece?
TJV: This show is a Valentine to New York, so I would be remiss if I didn’t pay homage to that. I love living in the city, I love the ener-gy of it, the drive of it all. There is a treasure trove of rich inspiration from just observing the city. You can sit in a Starbucks, watch people walk by, and witness the tempo, the character of the city, or sit on a subway and watch the way people react to movement in our everyday lives. The characters in On the Town ride the subway and walk the streets; what does that look like? That is often harder to choreograph than actual steps. You have to create the reality of New York.
TH: In addition to the city, of course, Robbins’ original choreography is iconic. How much of that has inspired you over this process?
TJV: All of it. I studied Fancy Free and I’ve seen many different productions of this show, some of which used Robbins’ choreography and some of which didn’t. When I did The King and I, I learned that you have to bow to the original and do some of the things that

people expect: they expect to see the sailors with their arms open, there are pictures they want to see. If you don’t fulfill that, whatever they have in their mind, then you’ve failed. But you also want to make it your own. You have to adapt it for this stage, for this au-dience, and for this time. Our tastes have changed over time. People have so many distractions now; they’re used to TV cul-ture and instant gratification, so you have to work harder to keep people’s attention. Jerome Robbins could hold the audience’s attention with those traditional 1940s mu-sical things, meaningful looks and the like. The style needs to be a bit snappier than it used to be.
I take Robbins’ choreography as gospel. Not the steps, necessarily, but the energy. And On the Town is such an open script; it gets to a dance number and there’s really nothing written. The “Times Square Ballet,” which is like a six minute song, gets four lines of stage directions. I’m like, “Six min-utes and that’s all you’re going to give me?” You have to write your own story in a lot of ways, which makes this show so different every time I see it. I’m trying to tell a story like Robbins did. He was very much a writer
in his own respect. I think really good chore-ography equates to telling a story. You have to serve what is happening on the stage and not interrupt it.
TH: In classical 1940s musical theatre, there’s all sorts of choreography, including the famous dream ballets. Building off your last point, how do you shape those stories?
TJV: There’s no ABC in choreography. Per-sonally, I work better when I have a story. When I’m just doing steps, it feels empty to me. I would much rather come up with some-thing in my head. The more specificity I have in that story, the easier it is to create. Looking at that “Times Square Ballet,” for in-stance, what I’ve come to is that “New York, New York” is the city happening around them, but by this finale of Act One, they’re with the city. That’s the story that I’ve creat-ed, that they’re now pulsing with the city. At the same time, I’m bringing back the char-acters and bits we’ve seen, bringing back elements from Act One. These boys are cen-tral in New York now, and all these people have become connected to their story. Even in a crazy big city like New York, we are all connected.

National Players, a program of Olney Theatre Center are about to begin rehearsals for their 70th tour, which will take their three-play repertory of Around the world in 80 Days, the crucible, and twelfth night all around the country to schools and universities, perform-ing arts halls, community centers, and correctional facilities. The ensemble of 10 theatre-makers will not only perform these three, very different plays, they will also drive thousands of miles, load in-and-out their own sets, set-up their own lights, run post-show discussions, lead workshops, and masterclasses. Through their tour, National Players will continue empowering learners of all ages to build stronger communities through artistic collaboration, and bring the mission of Olney Theatre Center across the country.
