MONEY IS MEANT TO BE USED RIGHTLY. THOSE WHO LIVE ONLY FOR GAIN AND MAKE MONEY THEIR MASTER

WILL NEVER REACH HEAVEN.

St. Dominic Church, B rick, N J

As we slowly put away our summer clothes and start to bring out our sweaters and jackets, we turn our attention to this beautiful fall season. One of the great festivals that we can enjoy in this season is brought to us by the German people. Soon we will be celebrating our own Oktoberfest

here at our parish. One might ask why this is such an important event for a Catholic church. To much surprise of many revelers, it is indeed a Catholic holiday!

On Oct. 12, 1810, Bavaria’s crown prince Ludwig (late King Ludwig I) married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Everyone in Munich was invited to attend festivities held in the fields outside the city. It was very important to the king that everyone sit, eat and drink without rank or file. The hard-working peasants were to sit and mingle in with the nobility. All were to be equal on this Catholic wedding feast day! Clearly this was a direct link to Christ’s continual use of the wedding feast as an image of eternity and our equality as heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. They enjoyed the celebration so much that they did it again the next year — and every year since. It soon became the “Oktoberfest” we know today. It was moved into the end of September and earlier October months simply to increase tourism due to the warmer weather.

Whether you are able to join us or not next week it is still a great reason for us to pause and be thankful to Almighty God for our faith and traditions, both spiritual and temporal!

Please Lend Me Your EarPeople who are grieving have a real need for someone

to listen while they tell their stories. Grief recovery, in

fact, can begin with the telling and re-telling of the

painful experience. Often bereaved persons are trying

to make sense of a sequence of events that led up to the

loss of their loved ones. Hearing themselves recount all

the details can be helpful in putting the pieces of such

painful events together.

Those who want to help a

grieving friend can best do so by learning to listen. The

person who is grieving is not looking so much for answers or solutions, as they are

for a kind, empathic attitude and an “ear to cry on”. Giving advice can be risky

unless you are a professional. Even if you, too, have lost a loved one, your

experience has been an individual one and so is your friend’s experience.

Listening is a true art. It can be of great therapeutic value in any time of crisis.

Anyone can do it -- it takes no special skill or learned technique. 1It does take a

little patience and a lot of heart. The results can be most rewarding.

Come and experience God’s love and compassion as you meet with people who

are on a similar journey. We have day and evening groups. We will meet for six

weeks and there will be a specific topic for each meeting. Please call 732-840-1410

and let us know which group you plan to attend.
