Sunday afternoon at Congress is highlighted by the Youth Orations Contest and the Memorial services at a nearby church. This year it was held at the beautiful Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Color

Guard Commander David Hoover carried in the Maryland flag during the ceremony.

During the Congress, members visited the Old Firehouse in Old Town and toured Sacramento City

including lunch on the stern wheeler, Delta King, and then visited Sutter’s Fort, the Stanford Home, the Governor’s mansion and the State Capitol including the office of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

On Monday night the Awards night is a big event with the parade of past Minutemen winners. President R. Duane Tackitt accepted awards on behalf of our State.

Bruce Wilcox passes on the President’s ribbon to newly elected President General David Appleby.

Annual Meeting at Bowie Stables and Mansion

Washington Rochambeau Paintings September 2008 Baltimore

The Carroll Mansion on E. Lombard Street in Baltimore City will be hosting an exhibition of David R. Wagner's Washington Rochambeau Revolutionary Route (W3R) paintings in September. They superbly illustrate the epic story of the Yorktown Victory March. David was also commissioned to make a sketch of the W3R for the MD Stadium Authority and now that work has been turned over to Carol Lee Thompson to complete. You may see other examples of his work at www.davidrwagner.com.

Arrival of the Royal Deux Ponts Regiment in Baltimore

Carol Lee Thompson has been commissioned to complete the artwork for the Wayside Marker at the Stadium at

Camden Yards in Baltimore. It will be a painting of the view of Fites Tavern (the current location of the First Mariner Arena) as viewed from Camden Yards where the French Artillery Camp arrived in Baltimore and encamped. You may see other examples of her wonderful work at www.carolleethompson.com.

W3R Chairman Robert Reyes has plans to commission two more paintings: (1) George Washington at Chester where he received news from Mordecai Gist that the French Gen. DeGasse had defeated the English fleet and were in the Chesapeake Bay and (2) one of Washington in Fells Point where he arrived at the London Coffee House to greet the commander of the advance scout French ship Serpeant.

French Monument Ceremony at St. John’s College

Thu. October 23, 2008 Annapolis

Did you know that French Soldiers are buried on the grounds of St. John’s College? Members of Rochambeau’s fleet died and were buried in Maryland on what is now the grounds of St. John’s College. There is a beautiful Monument to honor these men and each year we hold a ceremony there with other organizations to honor the memory of these men. Representatives of the French Embassy also attend. It is a beautiful ceremony and you are invited to observe.

campaign ribbon has been issued can receive the War Service Medal.

• Members who sign as the first line sponsor on 10 other members’ applications can receive the Liberty Medal.

• Were you a member of our Society in 1999? You are then eligible for the George Washington Bicentennial Medal.

If you are interested in learning more about these or other available medals, please contact our President Duane Tackitt to discuss further.

Have you seen this medal?

This medal is authorized to be worn by anyone who was a member of the Society at the time of our Centennial. Two members of our Society are looking to purchase this medal. Jr. Membership/CAR

We have great news out of National SAR Congress. The Congress approved a modification to the Jr. Membership program which allows males under the age of 18 to join the SAR. The SAR previously required that the applicant also be a member of CAR and maintain that membership, it no longer makes that requirement. Now a male of any age can join the SAR and if under 18, they will be a Jr. Member. This is a great opportunity for you to get nephews, grandsons, young cousins into the SAR at a much reduced rate. The new rate would be $70 per child. If already a CAR member then the rate is $50. If a second child joins using the same Patriot ancestor at the same time and is related within two degrees the second or third is $35. Maryland SAR has had nine youth join under the Jr. Membership program.

MDSSAR Chapters

#1 Sgt. Lawrence Everhart

The Everhart Chapter is taking on a terrific project to document its Chapter's history. It will include information since its forming, members, past newsletters, etc. This will be a great work for future historians of the chapter. We encourage all chapters to do the same. In addition, the Everhart chapter is welcoming 5 new members through DAR Referrals of Mrs. Elizabeth Deering. Mrs. Deering is now eligible to receive the SAR Medal of Appreciation to be awarded at our George Washington Luncheon. Remember any DAR lady who refers three new members to our society is eligible for this award and the Maryland DAR is then eligible for two National Award Contests that offer cash prizes.

#3 Christian Ardinger

At the June State Board meeting, former President Christou made a motion to appoint James G. Ballard Jr. as Chapter President of this long inactive Chapter. The motion carried and President Ballard has called for an organizational meeting on August 4th at Washington County Library, 100 South Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740. All who are interested in helping are invited to attend.

Newly appointed Chapter President James Ballard and newest member of the Chapter George Ballard (President of the Saratoga Battle Chapter NY) attended the 4th of July Citizenship program at the Saratoga National Battlefield Park where 20 new Americans were sworn in, a very moving event!

#4 John Eager Howard

The members of the Chapter and Color Guard honored 5 Patriots at their Annual Old St. Paul’s Cemetery Memorial. This year an additional grave was honored that of George Armistead. Chapter President Bob Lyons spoke on the contributions of this great man and also about the grave site and history of the graveyard itself. The MDSSAR Color Guard fired their muskets at each grave site.

#5 Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore

The Chapter has now contributed a new member to the MDSSAR Board of Officers and Managers in that Wm. Ian Towler is now the new webmaster and has done a remarkable job in putting up a new and more beautiful site in just 2 months. Check it out.

#8 Col. Tench Tilghman

President Tackitt as his first official act as State President attended the chapter on May 3rd to install the new officers at Heron Point in Chestertown. Pictured are Chapter President Dr Jackson Stenger, Secretary Dr. Warren Tewes, and President Duane Tackitt, and VP Dr. B. Conway Gregory.

#9 Col. Aquila Hall

Spencer Hunt has now been added to the Board as the new Eagle Scout Committee Chairman.

MARYLAND 400 PATRIOTS’ FUND

The Maryland 400 Patriots’ Fund commemorates the contribution and sacrifice of the Maryland Line in the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776, some 400 Maryland troops under the command of Mordecai Gist led a rear-guard action to check the British advance and allow the retreat of Washington's greatly outnumbered army. The Marylanders launched six counterattacks and on the last attack Cornwallis' troops were reinforced and the Marylanders were swept to the Gowanus canal. Many were killed, captured or wounded. Like the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, the MD 400 were committed to history for their brave last stand. Although the dead were buried in an unmarked mass grave on a knoll, we remember their sacrifices each year! George Washington

who watched the battle unfold from a nearby hill is said to have exclaimed:

“Great God! What brave fellows must this day I lose”.

If you wish to honor these men and become a member of the MD 400 Patriots’ Fund, for each $100 contribution to the MDSSAR, you will receive a certificate bearing the name of one of these soldiers and a lapel pin to wear on special occasions as a further remembrance of their historic sacrifices. These are presented at our Annual George Washington Luncheon in February each year. If you are interested, please make your check payable to the MDSSAR and mail it to our Treasurer Barrett L. McKown at 3580 South River Terr, Edgewater MD 21037-3245. Those contributing before December 31st will be recognized at the next GW Luncheon.
