Three veterans of the classic 1970s sitcom the Mary Tyler Moore Show have found their groove again on the prime-time TV sitcom landscape. Betty White, 88, Cloris Leachman, 83, and Ed As- ner, 81, are proving that old is the new funny. White, who has rarely been out of work since playing the man-hungry TV cooking show hostess Sue Ann Nivens on MTM from 1973 to 1977, will be back in series two of Hot In Cleveland next year. Asner, who is currently performing on stage in Los Angeles, has been signed to the upcoming sitcom Working Class, playing the crusty neighbour of a sin- gle mum (Melissa Peter- man). He is best-loved as cranky news editor Lou Grant in MTM and the spin-off Lou Grant, as well as voicing the grumpy Carl in the animated hit Up. But it’s Leachman’s re- turn to prominence in the sitcom Raising Hope which has critics in stitches. Leachman played Mary’s downstairs land- lady on MTM and in the spin-off Phyllis until 1977. In Raising Hope she plays Maw Maw, the senile, bra-discarding chain-smoking great- grandmother in the dys- functional Chance family. Raising Hope, Ten, Wed- nesday, 8pm
