Welcome to OASIS

Mike ZimmermanFriends of OASIS President

Greetings to all our valued members. I’d like to report that things have changed, but unfortunately we are still in a holding pattern at OASIS. As I said before, the City sta is in every day, and our Friends oce is open for business every day as well. The City has planned numerous Zoom videos for our membership, and many people are participating in this eort to bring you some enjoyment. August

had Zoom programs on topics like Coee Talk, Best Vacation I Ever Had, Making Your Own Spices, and Basic Car Care Tips, with yours truly. Check out the full list for September at newportbeachca.gov/oasis.

We have had a great response to our 2020 Friends Fund Drive so far. The brand new donation signs are now up for the community to see. We have a long way to go, but I need to thank the many members that have unselshly given to this great cause. I ask that those of you who have yet to give to Friends please take a minute and write a check, for it is badly needed. I personally go in every day and make sure our obligations such as our Visa bills, oce supplies, insurance premiums, and other day to day expenses get taken care of.

Our Board of Directors now meets on our appointed day via Zoom. It is business as usual for Friends. We discuss future programs and things we all decide as a group to support. All of the Travel Department trips have been cancelled until 2021, and the Sailing Club will eventually open up for limited member sails, while the Garden Club members still work the soil, and are planning for an upcoming Election of Ocers.

Walking the grounds and looking inside at all the empty classrooms makes me sad. We have such a beautiful facility that we are blessed with. Take a drive by and notice we have just completed a fresh new paint and varnish upgrade to the entire facility. I am really trying to keep everyone updated with our monthly Eblasts that are sent to each of you free of charge. Know that this inconvenience is not forever, and soon we will be back up and running once again.

Until next month. Always at your service, Mike

OASIS is closed until further notice. Our website has the most up-to-date information on a reopen date, along with many resources to help you through: www.newportbeachca.gov/oasis

Celeste Jardine-HaugOASIS Senior Center Manager Here we are at the end of the summer and I still want to say, “WHAT IS HAPPENING”. What I can tell you is that our OASIS Sta have worked so hard to bring you creative ways to stay involved and entertain you while you are staying at home. If you have passed up the opportunity to chat with us on our virtual coee chat or travel around the world with Nino Mohan and his virtual travel

presentations, then you have missed out. Additionally, we even have cooking shows with sta and some Board members posted on our webpage. We have developed lots of Zoom activities as well as videos that will be sure to keep your attention. Besides being creative, fun and entertaining, they are FREE. We have been blessed to have the Friends of OASIS who have helped us by paying for any supplies that are needed in order to produce these activities. If you are apprehensive to use your computer, please call us. We even have Zoom tutorials with a sta member who can talk you through how it works.I cannot tell you how much we miss everyone and the vibrant hustle and bustle of people at the Center. I think small critters like bunnies, squirrels and birds have taken over the courtyard. Although it is very hard to do the right thing, I know it is important for us to keep our distance, wear our masks and use that darn sanitizer. So please follow the guidelines so that we can all be together again soon!!!Stay well, Celeste

2020 – GREAT YEAR TO GIVE CASH TO CHARITY!!

The Cares Act provides tax benefits for 2020 only to encourage all taxpayers to give to charities:

(1) Taxpayers who take the standard deduction can claim a $300 above-the-line deduction on their 2020 income return for cash contributions to a qualified charity (Cares Act § 2204, IRC 62(a)),

or

(2) For taxpayers who itemize deductions, the limit on claimed cash contributions to qualified charities is raised from 50% to 100% of their AGI (Cares Act § 2205, IRC 170(b)).

Please consult your tax advisor; however, the Friends of OASIS especially needs this year all you can give to sustain the Center’s soon reopened programs and services.

Thank you,

FRIENDS and Seniors

YOUR LEGACY
