    a nima ls. He also told them to ea t t he food th a t

    grew in the ga rden and to have kids so the

    ea rt h w ould be full of people (G enesis 1:24-31).

    G od looked at everything H e made

    a nd sa id tha t it w a s good. Then G od rested

    (G enes is 2:1-3).

    The first two chapters of the Bible

    describe how God created the world.

    Here is what He did on each day.

    G od ma de light. H e ca lled th e light

    da y, and H e called the da rkness night

    (G enes is 1:3-5).

    G od ma de wa ter. He separa ted the

    wa ter so tha t there was w ater on the ear th

    a nd w a ter in th e air. The wa ter covered th e

    sky a nd w a s like a big cloud th a t y ou could see

    th rough (G enesis 1:6-10).

    The first 2,000 years of the Old Testament were covered in the first12 chapters of Genesis. The second 2,000 years are covered in thefollowing 12 events.

    Of a ll of his sons, J a cob liked J oseph t he best, so his brothers w ere

    very jealous. They sold J oseph a s a slave into Egy pt. While he wa s th ere, the king ha d a dream ,

    an d J oseph told him tha t his dream m eant t ha t t here would be 7 years w ith a lot of food a nd 7

    years w ith n o food. So the king put J oseph in charge of collecting an d sa ving extra food during

    th e first 7 years. Then dur ing th e second 7 year s J osephs brothers h a d to go to Egy pt to get food.

    When J oseph sa w th em, he forga ve them a nd ga ve his brothers a nd h is fat her food (G enesis 45).

    J osephs fam ily sta yed in Egypt. After J oseph died, the Egyptia ns ma de

    th e Isra elites their sla ves. After 430 yea rs t here w ere 2 1/2 million Isra elites in Egy pt. G od then

    picked a n ew lea der na med Moses w ho led th e Isra elites out of Egy pt. They crossed th e Red Sea

    on dry lan d a nd w ent to a mounta in called Sina i (Exodus 320).

    G od ga ve the Isra elites the Ten Comman dments a t Mt .Sina i. They w ere

    w ritt en on tw o stones and w ere the first rules the Isra elites had t o follow. G od a lso gave th em the

    plans t o build the ta berna cle and t he Ark of the Covena nt . The ta bernacle w a s a big tent G od told

    th em to build. The Ark w a s a w ooden box covered w ith gold. The Isr a elites put t hings in t he box

    th a t r eminded them of wha t G od ha d done for t hem (Exodus 2040).

    The Isra elites then w ent ba ck towa rd th e la nd G od prom-

    ised to Abra ha m, w hich w a s Ca na a n (Deut eronomy 1:64:43). There th ey sent in 12 spies to see

    w ha t it w a s like. J oshua a nd Ca leb were the only spies who believed tha t G od w ould give them

    back the la nd. When t he Isra elites disobeyed G od a nd decided not to go into th e land, G od ma de

    them w a nder in t he w ilderness for 40 yea rs. Everyone who w a s 20 years old or older died during

    tha t t ime except Moses, J oshua , and C a leb.

    When th e 40 years w ere over, Moses led th e people back to t helan d a ga in. He ma de a long speech, reminding th e people to obey G od, a nd t hen he died. God

    ma de J oshua t he new leader. J oshua led the Israeli tes across the J ordan River a nd into Cana an .

    They conq uered J ericho, Ai, an d most of the promised lan d of Ca na a n (J oshua 212).

    After J oshua died, there were ma ny different lea ders ca lled

    judges. One judge wa s Sa mson. He wa s a st rong wa rrior with long ha ir. Another judge wa s

    Debora h. She w a s a w ise woma n (J udges 116).

    The leaders a fter t he judges w ere the kings. The first t hree kings of

    Isra el were Sa ul, Da vid, an d S olomon. They each ruled for 40 years.

    This section covers the period after David (1,000 B.C.) to Daniel (500s B.C.)and the end of the Old Testament (400s B.C.). The first 2,000 years of theOld Testament were covered in the first 12 chapters of Genesis. Thesecond 2,000 years are completed with these 5 events.

    (1 Kings 12) After King Solomon died, t he kingd om split in tw o. The

    Northern kingdom w a s ca lled Isra el a nd th eir first king wa s na med J eroboa m. He wa s Solomons

    w a rrior. The Southern Kingdom w a s called J uda h. Their first king w a s Rehoboa m, S olomons

    son.

    (2 Kings 1225) The Nort hern King dom of Isr a el ha d 19

    kings. They w ere all bad beca use they did n ot obey G od. After 200 years t his kingdom w a s ca p-

    tured by a na tion ca lled Assyria a nd t he Isra elites beca me slaves aga in. The North ern Kingdom

    Isra elites did not return to the la nd un til 1948.

    (2 Ch ronicles 1236) The S outhern King dom w a s ca lled

    J uda h. They ha d 19 kings an d 1 queen, w hose na me wa s Ath a liah. S ome of the kings of the

    Southern K ingdom w ere good a nd some were bad. After 300 yea rs t hey w ere ca ptured by th e

    na tion of Ba bylon a nd beca me slaves.

    (2 Chr onicles 36:5-21) The J udea ns (J ew s) w ere in

    B a bylon for 70 yea rs. Da niel lived during t his t ime. Da niel loved God very much. Ba bylon w a s

    captured by a more pow erful people ca lled th e Medes an d th e Persia ns w ho let t he J ews return

    to the Promised La nd.

    Zerubbabel returned wit h t he first group of J ews w ho rebuilt the Temple tha t t he B a bylonia ns

    Kingdom J ews returned to J udah, but they were under the control of otherworld empires. In the 500s B.C., Daniel wrote about those empires, each onerepresenting a part of a mans body (Daniel 2:31-45). These are the names

    of the world empires who ruled over the J ews in J udah.

    Mary a nd her husba nd J oseph left th eir home in Naza reth beca use

    they h a d t o enroll in B ethlehem for a census. While they w ere there, Mar y ga ve birth to baby

    J esus, w ho is G od th e Son (Luke 2:1-7).

    Some Wise Men went to J erusa lem looking for J esus so they could

    w orship Him. When King H erod learned t ha t t he Messiah w ould be born in B ethlehem, Ha rod

    directed th e Wise Men to go there. Herod plan ned t o kill J esus beca use th e Wise Men called

    J esus the King of the J ews. When Herod could not find J esus, Ha rod had a ll the boys 2 yea rs

    old an d younger killed. J oseph w a s wa rned by an a ngel in a drea m, so he fled with h is fa mily to

    Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15).

    After King H erod died, an a ngel appea red in a dream to J oseph in

    Egy pt, telling him t o return to the lan d of Israel (Ma tt hew 2:20). So J oseph, Mar y, an d J esus

    w ent ba ck to their home town of Na za reth (Luke 2:39).

    When J esus wa s 12 years old, He went w ith J oseph and Mary to

    J erusalem. When they w ere on th eir w a y back home to Na za reth, they realized J esus wa snt

    w ith th em or their rela tives, so th ey return ed to J erusalem an d found H im teaching in the

    Temple (Luke 2:41-52).

    When J esus wa s a bout 30 yea rs old, He bega n t o tra vel a roundtea ching people a bout G od. One of the first things J esus did aft er He left h ome wa s to be ba p-

    tized by J ohn t he B a ptist in t he J orda n River (Ma tt hew 3:13-17).

    G od (th e Holy Spirit) led J esus int o the w ilderness. After 40

    days, H e wa s tempted by Sa ta n. One of Sa ta ns temptat ions wa s tha t he w ould give the king-

    doms of the world to J esus if J esus would w orship him. J esus said th a t w e are only supposed to

    w orship God. Then H e mad e Sa ta n leav e (Ma tt hew 4:1-11).

    J esus went back to wh ere J ohn w a s ba ptizing people. There He met

    J ohn a nd Andrew w ho were disciples of J ohn the B a ptist . They bega n t o follow J esus. Next,

    J esus chose Pet er, P hilip, a nd Na th a niel to be disciples (J ohn 1:35-51). J esus left wit h H is new

    disciples a nd w ent to a w edding in Ga lilee. While they w ere there, J esus turned wa ter into

    w ine. This is t he first mira cle J esus did t ha ts recorded in th e B ible (J ohn 2:1-11).

    J esus and His disciples tra veled back to

    J erusalem to celebra te the J ewish holida y called P a ssover. While they w ere there, a ma n na med

    Nicodemus, who w a s a J ewish religious leader, ca me to J esus in secret to a sk Him a bout

    salvat ion. J esus told Nicodemus that he must be born a gain. Wha t H e mean t w as tha t , even

    J esus a nd H is disciples stay ed in J erusalem for a w hile

    baptizing new believers. On their wa y back to G a lilee, J esus stopped at a w ell and t old a w oma n

    th a t H e wa s th e Messiah promised in the Old Testam ent (J ohn 4).

    J esus did a lot of His t eaching a nd h ealing of people in G a lilee.

    While on t op of a mount a in, He ta ught a g roup of people, w ho ha d been following H im, how t o

    live a good life by obeying G od (Ma tt hew 57).

    The P ool of B ethesda wa s a pool of wa ter in J erusalem w here sick

    people would go to try a nd get bett er. When J esus tra veled to J erusalem from G a lilee, He visited

    th e pool an d hea led a ma n w ho couldnt w a lk. The ma n jumped up and w ent a w a y rejoicing

    (J ohn 5).

    J esus tra veled to a pla ce called P hoenicia. While He wa s

    th ere, He ca me across a G entile w oma n w ho had a very sick da ughter. J esus healed her, proving

    th a t it w a s not just J ews w ho were being hea led but th a t everyone could come to J esus for help

    and salvation (Mark 7:24-30).

    J esus took some of His d isciples to a huge mount a in. While they w ereth ere, His fa ce beca me bright like the sun a nd His cloth es looked like a bright light . This w a s t he

    tra nsfigurat ion. When the disciples sa w this, they underst ood how a w esome God w a s (Mat thew

    17:1-13).

    At t he beginning of the fourth year of J esus tra veling a round

    tea ching a nd hea ling people, He left G a lilee for th e last t ime and headed for J erusalem

    (Luke 9:51-56).

    While in J erusalem, J esus friend na med Laza rus died and

    J esus ra ised him from th e dea d (J ohn 11). Lat er, J esus wa s passing thr ough a city na med J eri-

    cho. He sa w a short ma n na med Za ccheus up in a t ree try ing to see J esus in the crowd. WhenJ esus saw him, He told Za ccheus to come dow n from the tr ee. J esus sta yed wit h Zaccheus in his

    house, h elping h im to become a believer (Lu ke 19:2-10).

    During t he last w eek of J esus life, He rode into J erusalem on a donkey

    w hile crowd s of people cheered a nd pra ised Him, la ying pa lm bra nches on t he ground in front of

    H im (Ma rk 11:1-11). J esus th en a te supper wit h H is disciples for t he la st t ime before H is dea th .

    While ea ting w ith t he disciples, J esus explained t o them how t hey should remember His dea th

    by ta king Communion. Soon a fter this, J esus w a s ar rested and crucified (Ma tt hew 2627). His

    body w a s placed in a tomb for th ree da ys, then J esus rose from t he dead (Ma tt hew 28).

    new H elper for t hem, who w a s G od the Holy Spirit . While th e disciples were wa tching J esus, He

    rose up int o the clouds. This is called t he a scension (Acts 1).

    - A few da ys la ter, the H oly S pirit cam e to the disciples in

    J erusalem with t he sound of rushing w ind. Fire a ppeared above them a nd th ey bega n to speak in

    ma ny different langua ges, so tha t a l l who had ga thered w ould be a ble to understa nd w ha t t he

    disciples were t eaching a bout J esus. After t ha t, t he H oly S pirit a lso helped 3,000 people become

    Ch rist ia ns (Acts 2).

    - When P eter a nd J ohn continued t eaching people a bout J esus, they

    w ere a rrested by the J ewish religious lea ders. Ma ny J ews did not wa nt people teaching a bout

    J esus beca use they did not believe tha t J esus wa s G od (Acts 35).

    - Every spring J ews came to J erusalem to remember an d celebra te G od

    sa ving them w hen they w ere slaves in Egypt. This J ewish holida y w a s ca lled th e Pa ssover. There

    w ere at least 8,000 new believers w ho were in J erusa lem for th e Pa ssover. To help in gett ing

    supplies t o everyone, the a post les chose some men to serve w ho w ere ca lled d eacons. On e of

    th em wa s St ephen, wh o wa s lat er killed for tea ching th e J ews a bout J esus (Acts 68).

    - A young J ew na med Pa ul did not believe J esus wa s G od. He w a nted

    believers in J esus to be a rrested an d killed. J esus appea red to Pa ul in a bright light, a nd a sked

    P a ul why h e wa s being so mean t o J esus. P a ul then believed in J esus a nd decided to spend the

    rest of his life serving Him. B ut before Pa ul began to teach about J esus, he went a w a y for a bout

    10 yea rs t o st udy a nd lea rn m ore a bout G od (Acts 9).

    - During t his t ime, Peter w a s teaching th e J ewish believers. G od

    showed him in a dream th at the J ewish Law wa s over, so he could now eat meat tha t used to be

    illegal t o ea t . At this t ime J esus ha lf brother J a mes w rote the book of J a mes (Acts 10).

    - A good believer n a med B a rna bas w a s sent by t he believers in

    J erusalem to a new gr ow ing church in a city called Ant ioch. B a rna bas chose Pa ul to go w ith him

    to help teach t hem tha t J esus w as G od. The new believers ra ised money for P aul a nd B ar na bas

    to ta ke back to J erusa lem wit h t hem t o help the believers w ho were suffering th ere (Acts 11).

    - Another H erod, th e king of the J ews a t t his t ime,

    bega n a rresting a nd killing the believers. H e ha d t he Apostle J a mes (th e broth er of J ohn) killed.

    to th em. In th e B ible they a re t he books of 1 an d 2 Thessa lonia ns (Acts 1618).

    After visit ing J erusalem an d Antioch a gain, P a ul bega n his

    la st m issionar y journ ey w ith Timothy. They spent m ost of th eir time in t he city of E phesus,wh ere Pa ul wrote the books of Romans a nd 1 a nd 2 Corinthia ns. Then P a ul revisited some

    G reek cities before ret urn ing t o J erusa lem (Acts 1921).

    While in J erusalem, Pa ul wa s ar rested and t a ken to the city of

    Ca esarea , where he wa s put in prison for two years. P aul w as then sent to Rome for his tr ia l

    before Ca esar. While on t he w a y t o Rome, Pa uls ship cra shed. He w a s OK a nd cont inued on t o

    Rome, wh ere he wa s put in prison a ga in for a nother tw o yea rs. While he wa s in prison, he wr ote

    th e books of Eph esian s, P hilemon, Colossia ns, a nd P hilippia ns (Acts 2228).

    The Apostle J ohn moved to Ephesus a nd w rote th ebook called the G ospel of J ohn a nd t he sma ll books of 1, 2, a nd 3 J ohn.

    J ohn w a s a rrested an d sent to live on th e islan d of P a tmos. While

    there he w rote the book of Revela tion wh ich describes w ha t w ill happen t o the world a fter J esus

    comes dow n in t he clouds to ta ke all the Chr istian s up to heaven.
