A classic among all ages! Ideal for four or more players.

    WHERE:Outdoors (backyard, park, woods)

OBJECTIVE:To capture the flag of the opposing team and make it safely back across the border.

    NUMBER OF PLAYERS:Four or more

    GET READY:

    1. Split your group into two teams.

    2. Divide the terrain equally among the two teams, with a clear border in the middle to divide thetwo teams territories.

    3. Each team gets a flag or other type of marker (e.g., a bright T-shirt) and mounts it in their basesomewhere in the heart of their territory.

    4. Each team determines where their jail is, usually somewhere close to the base.

    HOW TO PLAY:

Each player is safe in their own territory. Once you cross the border, the other team can

tag you, sending you to their jail. You can be freed from jail by a member of your own

team running into the enemys territory and tagging you without getting caught. The first

team to carry the enemys flag back to their own territory successfully wins!

FUN TIP: Ramp up the team spirit with team apparel! Find ways to signify and unite your

teammates. For example, blue vs. red face paint, bandanas, or headbands vs. wristbands.

    Get creative!

SPICE IT UP: Got more time to play? Try using several flags (or sticks with markers

on them, e.g., black vs. white socks tied to the top)! This prolongs the game as well as

requires the team to strategize about where to mount their sticks.

Inside are a few activities to help promote family time.

    1. One person is assigned to be it and gets the ball.

    2. All the other players crowd around the player with the ball.

    3. It tosses the ball straight up in the air as high as they can, while all the other players run away.

    4. As soon as the ball reaches the top of its toss, it calls out a number, then runs away, as well.

    5. The player whose number was called must run back and catch the ball. Once caught, that playeryells SPUD! and all the other players must freeze!

    6. The player with the ball must try to tag one of the other players with it. If they do, the new

person gets a letter (first S, then P, and so on), and is now it. If they miss, the player with the

ball gets a letter, and is now it for the next round.

    7. A player with the letter D is out. The last man standing wins!

This is a fun outdoor game that can be played with as few as three people! All you

    5. Repeat the process until only one person is left. The winner then becomes the next person in

    charge of the music.

    hiding spot.

    4. When it finishes counting, they yell Ready or not, here I come!

    5. It then searches about the premises, until they find everyone.

    6. Once everyone is found, make a note of how much time it took.

    7. Repeat the process where a different person is it. The player with the lowest time wins!

    NUGGETS OF ACTIVITIES DATE

In a long car ride, take a 15 minute pit stop to stretch and play a quick

game of tag. Increased blood flow increases concentration and ramps

    up your metabolism.

Walking makes a difference! Take a walk with the family after dinner.

Its good for digestion and fosters community.

Keep it clean! Recruit the family to help out around the house. Even just

30 minutes of yard work can burn as many calories as playground games!

Visit a farm! Farms are great outdoor destinations to stay active

and play games in the fields. They also teach kids how life changes

    through the seasons.

Hit the trails! Go for a family walk or hike together. Its not only a fun

change of scenery, but a great workout as well!

Homework break! Studying is most effective with breaks. In between

subjects, have the kids get up and see who can do the most jumpingjacks in 1 minute before continuing their work.

Cant pry the kids away from their favorite TV show? Have them see

how many push-ups or sit-ups they can do between commercial breaks.

Make a game out of it!

Organized sports. Nothing beats the real thing! Enroll your kids in a

local team. Theyll get into a rhythm of regular exercise, learn about

    teamwork and make friends.
