Major Influences in America

Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins (born 1911, died 1973)

-Joined the U.S. Navy at age 19.

-Being exposed to imagery in Southeast Asia inspired his art, and eventually began tattooing while still in the Navy.

-While in his 20’s he opened a shop in Honolulu, Hawaii; mainlyfor sailors.

-Known for creating the “traditional old school” look of Tattoos.

- Don Ed Hardy trained under Norman, was one of his proteges.

Don Ed Hardy

-Born in 1945 in Iowa, raised in Southern California.

-First tattoo artist to incorporate Japanese aesthetic intothe American tattoo look.

-Graduated art school in 1967, began tattooing.

-Mentored by Sailor Jerry, and studied under a traditionalJapanese tattoo master.

-In addition to tattoos, he does drawings, paintings, and prints…now a fashion line.

-2004, Christian Audigier licensed Ed Hardy’s art to be putinto a clothing line.

- Still tattooing and working as an artist today in San Francisco.
