SUPERLINK 3™ POLYETHYLENEThe Superlink3™ hull used on our

Discovery® canoes is produced by arotational molding process developedhere by Lew Gilman. The best-sellingcanoe line in the world, Old TownDiscoverys®, offer exceptional valueand advanced designs of superiorstrength.

Our process produces a superiorhull, which provides superior abrasionresistance over non-polyethylene ma-terials. In addition Superlink3™ is astiffer material than other polyethyl-enes, resulting in a stiffer, better per-forming hull.

POLYLINK 3™ POLYETHYLENEBy using our three layer rotomold-

ed process, we now offer Polylink 3™kayaks. Our technology allows us toproduce a stiffer kayak than traditionalsingle layered kayaks and omits theneed for a keelson. The foam coreprovides such exceptional stiffness,less material is needed in the hull thusreducing the weight.

LINEAR POLYETHYLENEOur linear kayaks are rotomolded in asimilar manner as our Discovery canoes,only in a single layer of polyethylene.Polyethylene allows us to produce adurable hull at a reasonable cost. Analuminum keelson is added to providestiffness. (Except Sandpiper & Puffin).

OLTONAR / ROYALEX®Oltonar is Old Town’s exclusive version of Uniroyal’s Royalex ®, amulti-laminate of ABS, ABS foam andcrosslinked vinyl. Our Oltonar lami-nates are tailored to each of ourRoyalex® canoes, giving each a bal-ance of stiffness, durability and light-ness of weight.

The production process begins by spraying gelcoatinto a highly polished mold. After curing the gel-coat, resins and cloth layers are meticulously hand-laid into the mold. After curing, the mold is openedand the hull is removed ready for trimming.

WOOD CLASSICSPremium grades of mahogany, red cedar, whitecedar, and ash are the primary woods. The exteriorof the hull is covered with traditional canvas orfiberglass. Marine enamel gives a bright painted finish or urethane is used for a clear fiberglass exterior.

As beautiful as your new Old TownCanoe or Kayak is, it is meant to beused. To enjoy it to the fullest, you’llpaddle it through shallows, play inwhitewater, and beach it on gravel. Yourkids will play in it all day and you’ll storegear under it at night.

As you pursue your favorite pad-dling activities, your Old Town will col-lect a history of your adventures. A littlenick here, a scratch or scrape there. It’s

all part of the experience and for themost part of no consequence.

Whether your Old Town is made ofpolyethylene, Royalex ®, fiberglass orwood you can keep it looking beautiful.

HULL EXTERIORSTo clean, wash with mild soap and

water. To beautify, we recommend anyvinyl protectant products or a polishsuch as Pledge. These products offer

protection plus they bring out the deep,rich color. Please keep in mind theseproducts will not remove scratches orgouges in the hull. See repair on P. 8 &9 for the latter.

We do not recommend waxingyour hull with a paste wax such as mostcar waxes. The wax fills in any scratchesor gouges, dries to a white color, andmakes the scratches or gouges moreapparent.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

7HULL INTERIORSTo clean, wash with mild soap and

water. We DO NOT recommend usingthe above mentioned products or pol-ishes on the interior, as the floor of yourboat may become slippery.

Wood canoe interiors are finishedwith a tough spar varnish. Touch up asneeded with spar varnish.

WOOD PARTS MAINTENANCEAll of our canoes have some parts

made from wood. Whether it’s seats,thwarts, yokes, gunwales or dowels; thewood gives strength as well as beauty.

Maintenance of wood parts is fairly sim-ple. Most of our parts are coated withpolyurethane for protection from the el-ements. Any areas that become chippedor worn need only to be sanded andtouched up with a quality polyurethane.We recommend you give your canoe agood inspection and touch-up prior tostoring for the off-season.

SYNTHETIC PARTS MAINTENANCE

Many synthetic parts are used inOld Town Canoes and Kayaks for dura-bility. Vinyl gunwales, polyethylene

seats and decks, and ABS decks are easily maintained with the above men-tioned products for hull exteriors.

REPAIROld Town Canoes and Kayaks are

built to last. With the proper care andmaintenance, as described on the previ-ous pages, your boat should give youand your family years of enjoyment.

Though our Canoes and Kayaks arebuilt to withstand years of use andabuse, mishaps can occur and your boatmay at some point become damagedand need repair. In the event of a prob-lem, we recommend you contact yourlocal Old Town dealer for the appropri-ate repair kit or parts. Many of thesesame dealers may be able to repair theboat for you or give you assistance ingetting started in the right direction. Alisting of additional repair shops is alsoavailable by writing or calling the facto-ry. Following is a basic overview of therecommended repair options availablefor Old Town products.

SUPERLINK 3™, POLYLINK 3™AND LINEAR POLYETHYLENEDENTS: Many small dents in the hull will workthemselves out with the heat of the sun. Large

or deep dents may require heating with a hairdryer or light bulb. CAUTION: Do not over-heat. The surface should not become too hotto touch. Apply heat by alternating the heatsource inside and outside. This will slowlywarm the area. Pressure should be appliedfrom inside to aid the material in returning toits shape. With severe dents exact originalshape may not be obtainable.

DEEP GOUGES: Old Town repair putty (part#1332.2300). A 2-part epoxy putty to fill ingouges and cuts that do not go through theboat.

BREAKS/CUTS/PUNCTURES: Discovery re-pair kit (part #1331.0641). Contains a 2-partpolyurethane resin system, nylon cloth, sandpaper, brush, and instructions. Repairs of thisnature normally require a patch both insideand outside of the hull. The patch will be ap-plied very much like fiberglass, however thisresin is superior in that it is very durable aswell as flexible.

FINISHING: Roto spray paint (part#1331.1880). Use to cover any repairs.Colors available to match Discovery canoes.Please keep in mind that your hull’s color mayhave faded somewhat over time and may notmatch perfectly.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR ALL SUPERLINK3™ POLYLINK 3™ AND LINEAR

POLYETHYLENE HULLSPOLARIZATION

All polyethylene hulls need to be polar-ized prior to any attempted repair or bond-ing. No material will permanently bond topolyethylene as it is before polarizing. Youmust first be sure the area is roughened withsand paper and clean. To polarize you willneed a hand-held propane torch. The torchwill have a flame about 3 inches long. Insidewill be a smaller, brighter blue flame. Thissmaller flame must contact the hull in thearea to be bonded. Simply wave the flameacross the hull like you were painting it witha small brush. This process does not involvemelting, blackening, or even getting the sur-face hot. What is important is having thegases given off in the bright blue part of theflame oxidize the surface to be repaired. Donot touch the area with your bare handsafter polarizing as oils from your skin will re-verse the process.

OLTONAR/ROYALEX ®

DENTS: Many small dents in the hull willwork themselves out with the heat of thesun. Large or deep dents may require heating with a hair dryer or light bulb. CAUTION: Do

not over-heat. The surface should not becometoo hot to touch. Apply heat by alternatingthe heat source inside and outside. This willslowly warm the area. Though this kitwas originally developed for repairingDiscovery canoes, it works equally well onour Oltonar/Royalex ® hulls. *NOTE: Omitthe polarization step needed for polyethyl-ene. Using a torch on Royalex ® will meltthe outside skin. Kit contains a 2-partpolyurethane resin system, nylon cloth, sandpaper, brush, and instructions. Repairs of thisnature normally require a patch both insideand outside of the hull. The patch will be ap-

plied very much like fiberglass, however thisresin is superior in that it is very durable aswell as flexible.

FINISHING: Oltonar spray paint (part#1331.1870). Use to cover any repairs. Mayalso be used to cover areas where outer vinylskin has been worn through to restore UVprotection. Colors available to match Oltonar/Royalex ® canoes. Please keep in mind thatyour hull’s color may have faded somewhatover time and may not match perfectly.

FIBERGLASSDEEP GOUGES: Gelcoat repair kit (part#1331.1955) contains 2 1/2 oz. colored gel-coat, hardener, sandpaper, polishing com-pound, and instructions. Use to fill in gouges,chips, breaks in the gelcoat. Please keep inmind that your hull may have faded over timeand match may not be exact.BREAKS/CUTS/PUNCTURES: Fiberglass re-pair kit (part # 1331.1917). Contains poly-ester resin, hardener, fiberglass mat, fiberglasscloth, sandpaper, brush, and instructions. A

fiberglass patch needs to be applied to regainstrength of the hull.

FINISHING: Spray enamel. (part #1331.1930).Use to cover any repairs. Colors available tomatch canoes. Please keep in mind that yourhull’s color may have faded somewhat overtime and may not match perfectly.

WOODCUTS/PUNCTURES IN CANVAS: Wood/can-vas repair kit (part # 1331.1960). Containsambroid cement, pieces of canvas, tacks andcolor enamel. CUTS/PUNCTURES IN FIBERGLASS:Fiberglass repair kit (part # 1331.1917).Contains polyester resin, hardener, fiberglassmat, fiberglass cloth, sandpaper, brush, andinstructions. FINISHING: Enamel on painted models.Polyurethane on clear, natural models. Repairto wood canoes can be extensive. We recommend you contact your Old Towndealer or Old Town direct for assistance.

PROPERLY STORING YOUR OLD TOWN

DAY-TO-DAY STORAGECANOES: Should always be stored

upside-down, even over night. Set onsaw horses or blocks, if at all possible, asthis will allow the gunwales to carry theweight.

KAYAKS: Should be stored on theirsides or standing on one end, if at allpossible. If stored outside we recom-mend an Old Town kayak cockpit coverto prevent the possibility of water get-ting inside. Another option is to store itupside-down, preferably in slings or oncradle type saw horses. This will keepthe decks from being distorted.

If you live or frequent areas wherethe wind blows hard and you store yourboat in the open, we recommend youtie it down.

LONG-TERM STORAGEAt the end of the season, clean your

canoe/kayak and give it an inspection. Ifyou notice a scrape or wear spotthrough the exterior color layer, touch itup with Old Town paint. This will protect

the sub layers from the harmful effectsof ultraviolet light.

Ultraviolet light from the sun mayfade the color in time. If possible, storeyour boat out of the sun. A garage isperfect.

If you must store your canoe orkayak outside, do not cover it by layinga tarp directly on it. With the heat of thesun, the tarp creates an oven that candamage, distort, or discolor the hull. Atarp, properly suspended above theboat, will protect the boat from ultravio-let light. Simply leave an air space toallow for air circulation.

Canoes should always be stored up-

side-down. Put on garage rafters, sawhorses, blocks or in slings suspendedfrom the ceiling.

Kayaks should be stored standing onone end or on their sides. If stored out-side with the possibility of water gettinginside, we recommend an Old TownKayak cockpit cover. Another option isto store it upside-down. Upside-downstorage should be in slings or “cradle”type saw horses to help prevent hull dis-tortion.

If you must store your boat outside,we recommend you tie it down. Strongwinds can catch the underside, flip it,and cause damage.

Paddlesports can be very dangerous and physically demanding. The userof this product should understand that participating in paddlesports mayinvolve serious injury or death. Observe the following safety standardswhenever using this product.

•Get paddlesport instruction from a licensed or certified instructor. •Obtain certified first aid and rescue training and carry first aid

and rescue equipment.

•Always wear a nationally-approved personal flotation device.

•Always wear a helmet where appropriate.•Dress appropriately for weather conditions; cold water and/or cold

weather can result in hypothermia.•Check your equipment prior to each use for signs of wear or

failure.

•Never paddle alone.•You must not use alcohol or mind altering drugs prior to using this

product.

•Do not paddle in flood conditions.

•Be aware of appropriate river water levels, tidal changes, dangerous currents and weather changes.

•Scout unfamiliar waters; portage where appropriate.

•Do not exceed your paddling ability; be honest with yourself.

•Consult your physician prior to beginning your paddlesport training.

•Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the use of this product.

•If additional outfitting is added to this craft, use manufacturer’s approved materials only; do not impair entry or exit access.

•Read owner’s information package prior to using this product.
