2020 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL • HILLENBRAND INVITATIONAL 2

NEWCOMERS STEPPING UP• Oklahoma’s newcomers have quickly become one of the top storylines for the 2020 Sooners. OU has started eight fresh faces across the lineup in the early part of the season.

• Freshman Kinzie Hansen out of Norco, Calif., has shown power at the plate for OU. Out of Sooners that have played at least five games, Hansen ranks second on the team in batting average (.448), first in hits (30) and RBIs (23) and boasts a .672 slugging percentage and .493 on-base clip.

• In the circle, three freshmen have started games for the Sooners: redshirt frosh Brooke Vestal and true freshmen Macy McAdoo and Olivia Rains. McAdoo is second among OU pitchers with five wins, while Rains is second in strikeouts (20) and opponent batting average (.222) among those with five or more appearances. Another true freshman, Allana Thiede, out of Carlsbad, Calif., has made three appearances, striking out two in 3.0 innings pitched.

• Junior transfer Taylon Snow has made an impact at second base in her first season at OU. Snow is batting .351 on the year in the leadoff spot (11 starts) with one home run and has contributed in the field with 13 putouts and 16 assists.

THREE NAMED TO POTY WATCH LIST• Senior pitcher Giselle Juarez, junior utility player Jocelyn Alo and sophomore utility player Grace Green are among the 50 student-athletes on the USA Softball preseason Player of the Year watch list. Juarez was named an NFCA First-Team All-American in 2019, while Alo was a second-team selection and Green was a third-team honoree.

• OU’s three selections tie Alabama, Arizona, Texas and Washington for second most nationally. UCLA leads all programs with four on the list.

• The top 25 finalists for the 2020 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 22. While an athlete does not have to be on the Watch List to be considered for the top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the top 25 finalists. The top 10 finalists will be announced May 6 and the top three announced May 20. The 2020 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 26.

• Oklahoma alumna and current USA Softball team member Keilani Ricketts was a two-time recipient of the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award (2012, 2013).

BIG 12 PRESEASON FAVORITES AGAIN • Winner of the last eight regular season Big 12 championships, the Oklahoma softball team topped the 2020 Big 12 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. For the fourth year in a row, each of the other six head coaches selected the Sooners as No. 1. This marks the eighth straight year and 11th in the last 12 that OU has topped the conference’s preseason poll.

• Last year, the Sooners became the first program to finish Big 12 play undefeated in back-to-back seasons. OU is undefeated in its last 54 conference series (50-0-4 in that span) and has not lost a conference series since 2011. Overall, the Sooners finished 2019

with a 57-6 record as they made their 13th Women’s College World Series appearance, culminating with a national runner-up finish.

FRESH FACES• The Sooners have featured a new look in 2020 with nine newcomers having already taken the field for OU.

• The pitching staff includes three true freshmen in right-hander Olivia Rains, right-hander Macy McAdoo and left-hander Alanna Thiede, plus right-handed redshirt freshman Brooke Vestal.

• Junior Taylon Snow, a transfer from Auburn, has contributed early at second base in her first year with the Sooners. As a sophomore at Auburn, Snow started 52 games and her .324 batting average was third-highest on the team.

• Freshman OF Rylie Boone out of Owasso High School and INF Mackenzie Donihoo of Mustang High have found spots in the outfield. Both earned 6A all-state honors in Oklahoma. Another all-stater, Raylee Pogue, out of Mustang, Okla., has served as a dynamic utility player to start 2020.

• Continuing OU’s California pipeline are freshmen Kinzie Hansen of Norco, Alycia Flores of Colton and Alanna Thiede of Carlsbad. Hansen, listed as a catcher, has started 12 of OU’s 14 games at first base, while Flores, younger sister of junior Eliyah, has seen time at designated player and in the outfield and Thiede has contributed early for the Sooners in the circle as a lefty.

HOME SWEET HOME• After playing 37 of their 52 regular season games away from home in 2019, the Sooners will play more than half of their regular season matchups inside the friendly confines of Marita Hynes Field in 2020.

• OU will play 12 games against teams that reached the 2019 NCAA Tournament, including four Super Regional participants and three Women’s College World Series qualifiers.

2020 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL • HILLENBRAND INVITATIONAL

In her 26th season at the University of Oklahoma, NFCA Hall of Fame head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a national power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country.

Oklahoma has won four national championships, all under Gasso: 2000, 2013, 2016 and 2017. OU is one of just three programs in NCAA history to win more than two national titles. She’s reached the Women’s College World Series 13 times during her tenure and advanced to the postseason in each one of her 25 seasons.

With 29 seasons as a head coach to her name, Gasso has a career collegiate coaching record of 1421-392-3 (.783) and holds an overall record of 1272-334-2 (.791) at the University of Oklahoma.

She has won more Big 12 games (343-85; .801) than any coach in the league’s history and has more than twice as many overall wins as any other coach in OU history. OU has claimed 12 Big 12 regular season, including an unprecedented eight straight since the 2012 season, and six championship titles under her direction. Gasso’s Sooner teams have finished second or higher 20 different times in the 24 years since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996.

Numerous Sooner players have prospered under Gasso’s tutelage and garnered national, regional and conference recognition. Keilani Ricketts was the two-time USA Softball National Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013, becoming just the third player in history to win more than once. Gasso has also directed 65 All-Americans, 141 All-Region honors and 100 first-team all-conference selections.

In the Big 12 era, Sooners have been named Big 12 Player of the Year a total of 13 times and Big 12 Pitcher of the Year seven times, while eight have been selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year and one as Big 12 Newcomer. In 2010, Amber Flores became the first player in league history to earn Player of the Year honors twice, while Shelby Pendley joined her in 2015.

The OU softball success under Gasso has also spilled over into the classroom where the Sooners have been honored with 141 academic all-conference honors. Nine of those have gone on to become Academic All-Americans, including Lana Moran, the 2000 Academic All-American of the Year.

Gasso and her staff have consistently been recognized for their efforts on and off the field. The staff was awarded three consecutive Speedline/NFCA Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year awards from 1999-2001 and received the national honor in 2000, 2013, 2016 and 2017. Gasso and staff have claimed the regional honor in 13 of their 25 seasons with the most recent award coming in 2019. In addition, Gasso has been named the Big 12 Coach of the Year 12 times: 1996, 1999, 2000, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
