Their mission was simple. They had to entertain the audience with improvisational comedy. Mission IMPROVable was a resounding success. Mission IMPROVable is a touring comedy group based in Chicago and Los Angeles. The groups do shows across the country. The Chicago group visits schools from the east coast to the Rocky Mountains while the LA group visits schools on the West Coast. Mission IMPROVable was founded ten years ago by six friends who shared an interest in improvisational comedy. Since then, about twenty people have been involved with the group. Most of them got into acting during college. The group has become so popular that Campus Activities magazine recently voted it best comedy act. For those of you who don’t know, improvisation is the practice of acting, singing, talking, etc. in the moment. Improvisational actors uses only external stimuli such as their immediate environment or audience suggestions to create their act. For instance, one part of Mission IMPROVable’s act had the agents reenacting the founding of Goodwell, and then repeating it in three different accents supplied by various audience members (Texan, Dutch, and Yeti, in case you were wondering). Other parts of the act included writing letters from a soldier in World War II (at the completely fictional 20 Minute Battle) to his sweetheart. The two correspondents worked random words suggested by audience members to fill in the blanks. They also answered questions from the audience giving advice which went from bad to absolutely terrible. This advice ranged from giving your girlfriend or boyfriend meat for Valentine’s Day to buying carpet as an investment to signing up for a correspondence course in magic. There was also a spelling bee in which each member of the group gave one letter rather than spelling the entire word. The agents even showcased their singing talents. The actors sang a song where the last word of each verse had to rhyme with a name supplied by the audience. The group proved their adaptability when one member attempted to rhyme crab with Bob. From that moment forward they used the word ‘crob’ at every opportunity. After the show, the agents put on a workshop. They gave those who were interested tips in improvisational acting. Those who attended the workshop left with a greater understanding of the workings of an improvisational group If you enjoyed the show and want to see more, or missed the show but are interested by what you read here, you can check out the Mission IMPROVable website at www. missionimprovable.com or become a fan on Facebook. A committee was formed to plan various activities to honor the school’s centennial. This committee, which was chaired by Dr. Sara Richter, was made up of faculty and staff members and student representatives including Jerry Mihelic, Evlyn Schmidt, Tito Aznar, David Miller, Dr. Wayne Manning, Troy Morris, Brent Shoulders, Larry Peters, Doris Looper, Eric Begley, Jessica Lofland, and students J.B. Test, Katie Wiggins, and Carlee Schofield. In the past three years, the committee has done much to prepare for the centennial. Some of the activities include designing the OPSU centennial logo which has been featured on banners, pins patches, and even steins, not one but two centennial themed commencements, the development and writing of the building biographies, and the naming of the Centennial Park and Centennial Theater. On Monday, February 1, 2010, OPSU honored these achievements and many more. The reception took place in the lobby of Hughes- Strong. A large group of students and staff showed up to honor the Committee for their hard work and dedication. OPSU President Dr. David Bryant thanked the Committee on behalf of everyone at OPSU. After the ceremony everyone enjoyed some free food courtesy of OPSU, but let’s not forget the real reason we were there. The Centennial Committee has done a lot for OPSU in the last three years, so if you see one of the members of the Committee, stop and thank them for what they have done. Hector Cobos photo

The Oklahoma Panhandle State men’s basketball team had three conference home games over a ten-day period between January 21 and January 31, and posted a 2-1 in the stretch. The Aggies played Lincoln University on January 21, Newman University on January 23, and UT-PB on January 31. On Thursday the 21st the Aggies faced a very athletic and talented Lincoln team. The first half was a back and forth, but in the second half OPSU buckled down even harder on the defensive end and pulled a way to earn a 71 to 57 victory. The Aggies were led by point guard Reggie Lassiter who scored 22 points on the night,

while teammates Marcale Marshall and Kevin Geofroy added in 17 and 15 respectively. Trayvon Williams continued his dominance rebounding the basketball pulling down 9 rebounds on the night. The next game the Aggies faced the number one team in the conference Newman University. OPSU battled hard in the game, but fell in a high scoring affair 102 to 97. Five players scored in double figures for the Aggies who were led by Marshall scoring 24. Mark Bultman added 11 points, Stephan Colvin chipped in 14 points, and Lassiter and Williams each put up 21 points for OPSU on the night.

Next for the Aggies was The University of Texas of the Permian Basin on Sunday the 31st. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but due to weather was postponed till Sunday. This game was a very hard fought game from start to finish, and OPSU came out on top 56-50. The Aggies were once again led by the guard duo of Marshall and Lassiter who scored 17 and 14 on the night. At the end of this stretch the Aggies stood at 5-4 in the very tough Heartland Conference. The Aggies are on the road this week, but will be back at home on February 11 against Arkansas Fort Smith.

…I’m a man of wealth and taste. No, wait. Those are the lyrics for the Rolling Stones’ song “Sympathy for the Devil”. Let me start over. Hello, all you readers of The Collegian. My name is Ryan Bramblett, and I am the newest reporter for this esteemed publication. I am a twenty-year-old junior here at OPSU where I am majoring in English. I graduated from Des Moines High School in Des Moines, New Mexico. I decided to attend OPSU for several reasons. Notably, it was close to home, it was not overly expensive,

and I had heard many good things about the English program here. I thought that writing for the paper would be good experience in my chosen field. I come from the small town of Grenville, New Mexico. “How small is Grenville,” you ask. The town has a population of twenty-three. That’s it. Not 2300, or even 230. I’m not joking. Seriously, the only interesting thing to do in that town is leave. But I digress. As I am sure you all have noticed, The Collegian has a tendency to cover sports and not much else. I hope to remedy that by covering

some of the other events that occur here on campus. I hope that you will all find this change of pace as refreshing as I do.Lastly, I would like to say that I look forward to this opportunity. I am sure that I will meet many of you that I would not have otherwise encountered. I will also enjoy the chance to write (something I have enjoyed since I was in Elementary school) on a regular basis.

Oklahoma Panhandle State University will be hosting a musical, The 25 Annual Putman County Spelling Bee, this upcoming spring. Director Tito Aznar gave some background information about the production itself and all that is involved leading up to opening night. Tito has been a part of the drama department since he was a student at OPSU. After graduating, he accepted a teaching position and agreed to run the drama department. He has directed one production per semester ever since. When

asked why he choose “Spelling Bee” for this year’s musical he replied that it is “cutting edge, new and different.” “Spelling Bee” is not your normal run-of-the-mill Broadway production; unlike most shows performed in the big city, it has no intermission and moves at a fast pace. The professional production opened in May of 2005, and royalties, or rights, were just made available this past September, making OPSU one of the first schools to perform it. The show is a comedy based on a group of kids, highlighting all those awkward moments of

middle school that we have all been through. Getting a production on its feet requires a great deal of work, time and supplies. Over a period of eight weeks in sixteen rehearsals, the cast learns music, lines, where to stand (blocking) and choreography. Tito is also responsible for building the sets, making the costumes and checking the details. Occasionally volunteers will step up and help get things together; even so, with the amount of work

to do, volunteers are readily welcome. The cast includes Alexander Anderson, Michael Ask, Tito Aznar, Theresa Brott, Emily Dye, Angelena Reed, Sara Jane Richter, Josiah Royse, Jacob Whiteley, and understudy Laura Torres. Along with the cast the musical involves the orchestra and multiple people behind the scenes working lights, moving sets, helping performers get ready and working the ticket booth.

Lady Aggies Stay in Hunt for Post SeasonBy Josh Edenborough

The Lady Aggies of OPSU, just like the men’s team, played 3 conference home games in the last ten days. OPSU went 1-2 in this stretch falling to Lincoln in overtime and Newman before beating UTPB this past Sunday. On Thursday January 21, the Lady Aggies faced Lincoln University. OPSU played hard, and the game went into overtime before the Lady Aggies fell in a heartbreaker 56-54. The Lady Aggies were led in scoring on the night by Camille Washington who scored 12 points, and Nicole Candelaria who added in 10. Lauren Cherry and Callie Schafer each had very strong nights for OPSU, pulling down

8 rebounds each. The following Saturday OPSU took on Newman University. The Lady Aggies fell to Newman in what was another close game to the end 73-61. Washington and Cherry led the way for OPSU in scoring, putting up 14 and 11 points respectively, and Schafer had a huge game, pulling down 16 rebounds to go along with 7 points. Sunday, January 31, the Lady Aggies played UT-PB, and OSPU was in search of a much needed win to keep them in the hunt for making the conference tournament. OPSU

pulled out the much needed win 71-60. The Lady Aggies were led by Cherry, who had an outstanding game, scoring 16 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Three other Lady Aggies scored in double figures during the game - Chaney Latham with 14, Cassie Wood with 11, and Kariz Bioni added 10. At the end of this important home stretch, the Lady Aggies stood at 3-5 in conference play, and are still very much in the hunt for making the conference tournament. OPSU will next be in action at home on February 11 against the University of Arkansas of Fort Smith.
