The University of Oklahoma was founded in 1890. The University's first president was David Ross Boyd, who was elected in August 1892, 15 years before statehood.

In 1893 the first university building was built. In 1903 that building built in Norman burnt down. However according to records, President Boyd continued education in the University.

In 1953-1957 OU held a 47 game winning streak under Bud Wilkinson.Oklahoma athletics have been dominant, winning many championships in all sports, especially football.

In 1932 ,167 acres was added to Oklahoma University. This land is the South Oval, and was added under William Bizzell, many important buildings are on this land including Bizzell Library.
