The interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects. This is what we strive to create with the talented education leaders, researchers and practitioners we meet, and the innovative ideas they bring to the table.

Every year we have the great fortune of welcoming thousands of education professionals to OISE, University of Toronto. We are often inspired by their plans for education transformation as they innovate within their teaching practices, lead major education changes, and build education systems capacity and capability.

These stories energize the OISE Continuing & Professional Learning team and encourage us to think meaningfully about how we can best support the professional advancement of the learners, organizations, and communities we serve.

In 2015, OISE Continuing and Professional Learning (CPL) began to ‘re-imagine’ continuing education and challenge conventional perceptions of what it means to be an educator. Since then, our professional learning solutions have grown to connect a broader range of education professionals across different sectors and industries.

We are excited to be part of this global education ecosystem. The following pages demonstrate how our connections have propelled our journey in 2017.

Annual Review 2017/20186

OISE Continuing & Professional Learning

Annual reviews are an organizational rhythm which remind us about the various activities we’ve been fortunate to participate in – and there have been numerous OISE CPL activities in 2017-2018. Yet what annual reviews can’t readily illustrate is the commitment, spirit and effort of a team and community; working and learning together to execute on a vision. To really appreciate outcomes, you need to pause and appreciate the ‘how’ behind the ‘what’ – and understand that it’s within the ‘how zone’ where organizational learning happens.

In considering the ‘how zone’, I am reminded of the dart experiment by Kitsantas and Zimmerman (2002) who divided students into two groups of learners: Team Performance and Team Learning. Team Performance was told to throw the darts as close to the centre of the dart board (essentially, dive in). Team Learning started with guidance on how to hold the dart, the position of the arm and body to throw the dart and eventually worked up to target the centre of the dart board. When it came time to assess who could hit the centre of the dart board, Team Learning outperformed Team Performance, and more interestingly, Team Learning also loved the process which led them to achieve hitting the bull’s eye. The lesson of this experiment is a reminder that learning is a valuable process – one where you have to slow down sometimes to reflect, determine a focus, develop a plan and practice. As my dear colleague reminds me “it’s all in the backswing”.

2017-2018 has been a professionally rewarding year with much to celebrate in terms of outputs: new programs, new destinations, new colleagues, new partnerships and new technologies. Yet it’s the inputs and the commitment to learning – the backswing – demonstrated by the enthusiasm, creativity and support of the OISE CPL team, and extended OISE and University of Toronto communities, which inspire.

We’re just getting started!

It’s all in the backswing...

OISE Continuing & Professional Learning

A Celebration of LearningFollowing a six-month professional development initiative, 170 Saudi Arabian educators in the Building Leadership for Change program celebrated their substantial learning achievements with the OISE CPL facilitation team.

On Friday July 7th, 2017 a Celebration of Learning was held at the Desautels Hall in Rotman’s School of Management building to mark the graduation of 170 learners from the OISE Continuing & Professional Learning (CPL) Building Leadership for Change Program.

The Building Leadership for Change through School Immersion initiative, known as ‘BLC’ by all participants, is the result of a collaboration with the Saudi Arabia Cultural Bureau in Canada, and the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), whose initial Request for Proposal for the program was released in May 2016.

With the aim of empowering educators to support the success of the KSA Vision 2030 national transformation plan, the Ministry sought leading universities to develop and deliver a premier professional development experience for Saudi K-12 educators. 42 universities responded to the initial RFP, with OISE emerging as the global partner of choice, selected to host the largest cohort of learners worldwide. Institutions in Australia, Finland, and the UK have also hosted cohorts.

In January 2017, OISE CPL was pleased to officially welcome 170 fellow educators, practicing as teachers, principals and counsellors from Saudi Arabia to the official Hart House launch and orientation to the first six-month Building Leadership for Change program.

As a global leader in education, OISE values all opportunities for international exchange. OISE Dean, Glen A. Jones commented on OISE’s history of leading cross-cultural experiences and peer-to-peer learning opportunities. He said, “We have a history of sharing our knowledge and perspectives about teacher education and the teaching profession around the world…[This initiative is] about providing a great Canadian educational experience, [and] it’s about teacher-to-teacher relationships, which is what we’ve always been a part of.”

Led by a team of outstanding OISE CPL Facilitators, this pioneering cohort participated in three program phases: Orientation, Foundations in Canadian Pedagogy, and Guided Immersion. Structured to provide insights and immersive,

practical experience with Canadian teaching/learning methodology and models, the six-month program was also designed to improve English language capabilities.

Split across eight classes, a caring and collegial culture developed between classmates, the OISE Facilitation and administration teams in our shared learning experience. Facilitators from each class noted the energy, enthusiasm and commitment of learners. Facilitator Judi Denison said “This group has made such an incredible commitment to self-growth and learning – I am thoroughly impressed with the dedication they’ve demonstrated towards their learning”.

Each learner was matched with a mentor teacher in the Toronto District and Peel District School boards, segmented by role (Teachers, Principals, Curriculum Leaders and Counsellors) to ensure successful, rich and meaningful school immersion experiences. The peer-to-peer exchange in school settings was rewarding for all involved. In written feedback, one of the learners reflected on their experience: “I was inspired by how a teacher deals with the differentiation in the classroom, and after the guided immersion part of the program, I realized that fairness is not sameness. I had a great experience and I’m happy to take it back home”.

The Professional Learning Community (PLC) – an effective staff development team approach, and a powerful strategy for school change and improvement – has been paramount for this talented group of educators in effectively managing their learning transition from Canada back to Saudi Arabia.

Now running ‘Cohort 2’ of the Building Leadership for Change program, we are grateful to have had the opportunity to work and learn with such a talented, generous group of peer educators. We wish them every success in their professional and personal lives, and in the roles they will each play toward a successful realization of their national 2030 Vision.

OISE Continuing & Professional Learning

A Great Exchange with OUC In October 2017, OISE CPL was honoured to host a delegation from the Open University of China for future-focused discussions on the emerging needs of learners.

A delegation from the Open University of China (OUC) joined OISE CPL for a four-day visit in October, 2017 to learn and share knowledge of professional learning models and online teaching and learning practices.

Formerly known as China Central Radio and TV University, the OUC was founded in 1979 in Beijing. A university without walls, the OUC is open to all, and provides education to both the urban and rural areas of China using modern information technology to support the vast school network. The University operates through 44 provincial radio and television universities (PTVUs) and is open to all members of society, offering both degree and non-degree education. It currently serves approximately 3.5 million learners each year with average course attendance of 15,000.

Our visit together coincided with the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) World Online Learning Conference in Toronto. In addition to our study visit, the OUC had groups of people attending the conference, which OISE CPL also happened to be attending as event sponsors. It was at this global conference where the OUC was awarded with the ICDE Prize of Excellence, in recognition of their leadership and outstanding contributions to the field of open and distance education.

Alongside OISE PhD Candidate, Sharon Li, OISE CPL Associate Director, Michael Cassidy led our four-day visit with OUC colleagues, and enjoyed speaking with the group about global ambitions and future directions. “We had a lot of future-focused conversations about the emerging needs of learners, the importance of keeping ahead of how to learn, as well as what to learn in a rapidly changing world.”

Michael explained that they designed this four-day visit to be a bit different than others we’ve hosted in the past. While there were opportunities for a lot of discussions at OISE together, this time our group also had the opportunity to visit a number of different digital learning offices in the city and participate in an OISE-hosted digital expert panel discussion on the emerging needs of learners. Throughout the visit, the highly engaging conversations continued at a number of local restaurants each evening, beyond the scheduled activities.

Michael said “…although the OUC is serving learners on a massive scale, there are actually quite a lot of similarities in our interests and in the nature of the work we do. We thought it would be so much more interesting to hear from a wider network of those involved in professional learning during our time together. So while we planned a lot of opportunities for conversations between us, we balanced it with research, as well as visits to the University of Toronto’s Mobile Application Development Lab, Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone as well as LinkedIn’s Toronto office to experience a bit of what’s happening in Toronto’s digital learning hub.”

After such an enjoyable exchange, Michael said that he looks forward to having more opportunities to work with the OUC in the future. “Learning about their personal and organizational commitment to professional development was enlightening – this is without doubt one of the characteristics that make them the leading accessible university in the world.”

OISE Continuing & Professional Learning

Northern Exposure for CPLOISE’s Nicole Elliot travelled to Rankin Inlet to lead an on-site Mental Health Training program for the Department of Health at the Government of Nunavut.

OISE CPL Facilitator, Nicole Elliot, led an 11-day mental health training program for a diverse group of health professionals, affiliated with the Department of Health at the Government of Nunavut. She flew to Rankin Inlet – an Inuit Hamlet on Kudluik Peninsula in Nunavut – to conduct the training, which brought together a group of health practitioners from surrounding communities to reflect on topics impacting the communities in which they work.

An OISE PhD candidate in the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development in the Clinical and Counselling Psychology Program, Nicole reflected on her Nunavut facilitation experience:

“It was such an incredible opportunity to provide training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). As part of the training, I was able to provide clinical support for mental health care providers in Nunavut. The learners who received the training had various backgrounds in social work and nursing, but one thing they all had in common was that they were working with very profound and complex mental health issues. The training not only gave them more therapy tools to utilize in their communities but also provided a space to connect with one another, receive validation and support for the work they had been doing prior to the training”.

Nicole ensured that the training included cultural considerations and adaptations to both the CBT and DBT models to include Indigenous worldviews and healing approaches. The group discussed the historical impacts of colonization and intergenerational trauma, and how that could be conceptualized in their clinical work. Nicole found that this part of the training was valued strongly by the learners.

Nicole’s presence and approach was appreciated by healthcare practitioners, with one commenting, “I enjoyed the time we spent on thought records and liked that interventions

were broken down between cognitive and behavioural. I loved the focus on indigenous clients and use/effectiveness of CBT”. Others appreciated that Nicole was onsite to deliver the training, noting, “It was great you were willing to provide us with information this way, otherwise, we may not receive it at all”.

Many of the learners in the program were coming from remote Inuit communities, and Nicole commented on the value of delivering onsite training in remote locations:

“Training opportunities like this are important and needed, especially for our healthcare providers who are working in remote places, with few resources and supports for people with significant mental health issues. I was very privileged to be with such an incredible group of people who shared their stories of what brought them to Nunavut and what they love about living and working in their communities.”

Following the success of the December program, the Department of Health at the Government of Nunavut requested another Cognitive Behaviour and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy training program for a second group of health professionals, which was delivered by Nicole again in March 2018.

Associate Director, Michael Cassidy is committed to improving access to OISE CPL programming for healthcare practitioners. He says “There are so many remote communities across the country who would benefit from this kind of customized program. We’re planning more initiatives like this and we’re committed to taking more of our programming out to remote areas, so we can better support counsellors and other mental health practitioners in their communities.”

A New Class of MastersThe first group to complete OISE CPL’s Brief Coaching program celebrated their journey during their Coaching Masterclass weekend.

“Please meet the newest class of masters”, were the words accompanying this fun photo (right) in Haesun Moon’s tweet, dated March 17th, 2018. As OISE CPL Facilitator, she was proudly announcing the first graduates of the new Brief Coaching program – a program she created, and found a perfect home for at OISE CPL.

An OISE LHAE alumna, Haesun Moon is one of Canada`s leading educators and advocates for Solution Focused Brief Coaching. Haesun teaches and consults around the world, working with senior managers and executive level leaders on change management, performance evaluation, and strategic thinking.

While working toward her PhD in OISE’s Leadership Higher and Adult Education department, Haesun joined OISE CPL’s Adult Learning & Development program team as a facilitator, and conversations about her Brief Coaching program started to take shape. Having created a full Solution Focused Brief Coaching program, Haesun saw a perfect alignment with OISE CPL’s Workplace Learning & Development professional development programming, and after conversations with Executive Director, Elisabeth Rees-Johnstone, CPL began to test the market and redesign components of the program.

For workplace leaders, applying effective coaching methods can advance the capacity and capability of leaders and teams alike. Elisabeth recognized a gap for quality professional development in this area. With first-hand knowledge of the challenges that organizations face, she commented “At an organizational level, we saw room in the market to support evidence-based professional development on coaching.”

Recognizing Haesun’s program as an answer to solving these organizational gaps, Elisabeth said, “I wanted to ensure that by entering this space, the program would be grounded in methodology, and aligned to the International Coaching Federation, and this program readily meets those two commitments”.

Following a full governance approval cycle, the program welcomed its first learners in October 2017, to the Foundations of Brief Coaching course. The program includes three core courses, taken sequentially – a Foundations course, followed by an Applications-focused course, ending with a Coaching Masterclass – each 24 hours in duration with a blend of in-class and online delivery. Some of the learners were pleasantly surprised about the strength of the online components. In formal learner feedback, one participant wrote, “...my expectations of the online course delivery were exceeded. I loved that we had a webcam on everyone and were able to have breakout discussions. It provided a different and more ‘hands-on’ experience.”

A testament to Haesun’s passion for the subject and warmth as an educator, the first group of graduates from diverse professional backgrounds have shared excellent feedback on their learning experiences, We look forward to congratulating many more professionals to the program in years to come. Future groups may face a challenge, however, in matching the energy and enthusiasm of this first group of graduates!

July 2017JESIE – Future Educators (Foundations in Pedagogy and Counselling Psychology)We are privileged to have worked with SuOn Centre Inc. and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education (JPDE) since 2013 in delivering the Future Educator Development Program to Jiangsu International Exchange (JESIE) learners. JESIE is a non-profit organization that supports international exchange between students in the Jiangsu province of China and International students.

In June, 2017, we hosted a large cohort of Jiangsu University students for four weeks. Split in to two streams of focus – Foundations of Pedagogy and Foundations of Counselling Psychology – these future educators participated in an English language enhancement program designed to enhance their academic learning. They explored either critical pedagogy, as reflected in the province of Ontario Education curriculum, or theories and techniques of counselling psychology in the 21st century.

Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) AccreditationIn July 2017, the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy courses for the 2017-2018 academic year were accredited by the CCPA as continuing education credits. Following this accreditation approval, our learners can now apply any of our Solution-Focused Brief Therapy courses to their continuing education credit requirements to maintain their counselling designation through the CCPA.

November 2017Experimental High School Attached to Beijing Normal University – Building Exemplary High School STEAM Programs Our colleagues in the Department of International Academic Programs and Initiatives at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus contacted OISE CPL in Spring 2017, to develop in-service teacher programming for their contacts at China’s Experimental High School attached to Beijing Normal University. Faculty at the Experimental High School had expressed interest in visiting us to learn more about the success of STEAM education in Ontario.

We developed a customized professional development solution, and were pleased to host a delegation of 11 Experimental High School Faculty members for a seven-day professional learning program. The program focused on developing knowledge and skills that enable educators to build academically rigorous STEAM curricula, assessments and professional staff development. We visited several TDSB schools, participated in a panel discussion, and heard presentations on Ontario’s student achievement success, Arts education in STEAM Schools, Collaborative Teacher Inquiry and Foundational Competencies.

Welcoming 170 Educators from Saudi Arabia to Mississauga and Toronto – Building Leadership for Change Through School Immersion (Cohort 2) OISE CPL is delighted to host a second cohort of Building Leadership for Change educators from Saudi Arabia, who arrived for orientation in November.

A few changes have been made following the first 6-month program, including a program extension resulting in a full 10-month delivery. To accommodate more learners, we

introduced a Mississauga campus in addition to our downtown Toronto campus. We have also worked with this cohort to pilot a new app for the program, which was introduced several weeks before the program start, providing a platform for learners to gain awareness of arrival expectations, helpful logistics, community resources and program information. The app also provided an excellent platform to develop a strong online community, ask questions and share knowledge.

Orientation events were held at the Glenerin Inn in Mississauga and Hart House in Toronto. These events featured an orientation session, as well as an exhibitor session where learners could meet with the Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau (SACB), local area organizations, banks and school boards, so as to alleviate early-arrival anxieties. Both sessions were well-received and much appreciated.

Russia – International Consortium: Global Competencies – A Canada Country Case Report OISE CPL was delighted to welcome a Russian delegation in November for a three-day learning visit focused on 21st Century Competencies. December 2017The Future of Work CollaborationExecutive Director, Elisabeth Rees-Johnstone has been exploring opportunities for collaboration and research funding with Canadian Industry (Financial Services, Telco and Retail) to support a University of Toronto research team on an initiative examining the social implications of technology transformation in the workplace. This Future of Work research collaboration combines the interdisciplinary expertise of Associate Professor, Michal Perlman (OISE/SPPG), Professor Linda White (Political Science/SPPG) and Associate Professor Elizabeth Dhuey (UTSC Management/Centre for IR and HR). With the support of OISE CPL, the goal of The Future of Work initiative is to create opportunities that will serve to forge research collaborations and support the gathering of data to better understand the future of work. Given their areas of research expertise, the research team is particularly interested in analysing these questions from a human capital development perspective, focusing on the implications for education and labour market institutions.

In late November, CPL invited the research team to our Professional Advisory Committee meeting to present their research proposal and join a discussion about marketplace trends and social implications of exponential technology adoption in our workplaces. Also visiting was guest Jake Hirsch-Allen of LinkedIn Canada, who shared fascinating data insights relevant to the Future of Work conversation. So far, several organizations have expressed interest in collaboration opportunities, and conversations are ongoing.

Government of Nunavut, Department of Health – CBT & DBT Training ProgramOISE CPL worked with the Department of Health at the Government of Nunavut to offer an eleven-day Cognitive and

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy training program. On November 29th, OISE CPL facilitator, Nicole Elliott flew to Rankin Inlet – an Inuit Hamlet on Kudluik Peninsula in Nunavut – to conduct the training, which brought together a diverse group of health practitioners from surrounding cities to reflect on topics impacting their communities.

Our Facilitator, Nicole Elliott, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development in the Clinical and Counselling Psychology Program at OISE, provided clinical support for mental health care providers.

The program focused on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and included cultural considerations and adaptations to CBT and DBT models to include Indigenous worldviews and healing approaches. Following the success of the December program, Nicole travelled to Rankin Inlet again in March 2018 to deliver another Cognitive & Dialectical Behaviour Therapy program for health practitioners over six days. (See story on Page 14-15).

January 2018OISE CPL joins RBC Future Launch discussionsOISE CPL Executive Director, Elisabeth Rees-Johnstone was invited to join an RBC Future Launch roundtable discussion in January. These cross-country round tables focus on the future of work, acknowledging the fact that the largest generation of young Canadians are now entering the work force at the same time as a revolutionary age of technological advancement, which is starting to affect every job in the country.

The January discussion centred around the necessity and demand for foundational skills, and the critical role

of PK-12 and Post-Secondary education sectors in advancing these skills. RBC is leading these discussions with education and industry leaders and asking provincial and federal governments to work together to improve the prospects of Canada’s youth as they prepare to lead our country in the decades ahead. They are committing $500-million over ten years to Future Launch – an initiative to better prepare young Canadians for the future of work by addressing three core areas: work experience, skills development and networking. Recent studies led by RBC have indicated that within the next decade, more that than a quarter of Canadian jobs will be heavily disrupted by technology, and more than half will go through a complete skills overhaul.

New Cohort for First Nations Schools Principals’ CourseIn January, OISE CPL was delighted to welcome the fourth cohort of the First Nations Schools Principals’ Course. 21 Principals and aspiring Principals have joined us from across Canada, representing 18 band-led schools. First piloted in 2015-16, the First Nations Schools Principals’ Course is a ten-month, 250-hour course, that is the result of a partnership with the Martin Family Initiative (MFI), OISE scholars with expertise in Indigenous education, and an advisory board of Canadian First Nations leaders and educators.

OISE LHAE Associate Professor Jean-Paul Restoule worked with Associate Professor Joseph Flessa and Lecturer Coleen Scully-Stewart to design the professional development course. The blended-learning class addresses the specific needs of school leaders working in band-operated First Nations schools, and includes a 30-hour practicum for principals to work on an initiative that will remain in the community, such as writing a new policy for responding to a crisis situation or implementing a plan to help with leadership in the school. Throughout the course, principals build a strong professional network of peers, and many have remained in contact with one another. A number of past participants have also become course mentors and instructors to support new cohorts of learners.

Antwerp, Belgium – Sharing the Success of Ontario’s Education SystemVice-Mayor of Antwerp, Claude Marinower, is driving a 2028-focused vision to reform education in the city, to become ‘Antwerp Education Capital’. To kick off the 2017-2018 Academic Year, we welcomed more than seventy Continuing & Professional Learning (CPL) sessional facilitator team members to our annual Fall ‘Welcome Back’ event, held on September 9th, 2017 in the OISE Library. As always, it was wonderful to meet our new facilitators and re-connect with our veterans.

As a team, we discussed the OISE CPL commitment statement and explored what it means to “Engage the world’s educators and empower one another to create environments where learning thrives”. We shared how we all collectively and individually contribute to

this commitment as OISE professional educators. Creating safe environments, Personalizing learning, Challenging one another, Collaborating and Setting expectations were featured highly in the discussion.

We took time to review all of our achievements from the 2016-2017 academic year, and focused on the year ahead, highlighting new programs, events, and our commitment to improving our online/blended learning environments. To close, we broke into smaller groups to join sector-focused discussions and a Blackboard Workshop to gear up for the start of term.

Each year we look forward to gathering our community of professional educators together to recognize our collective and indivdual achievements.

We continue to expand our direct enrollment reach with new markets and online delivery.Once almost completely reliant on Additional Qualifications (AQs), our direct enrollment courses continue to expand in new directions. While the Ontario market for AQs has declined, we are seeing substantial growth in other sectors, within our Community and Workplace Learning & Development (WLD) portfolios.
