3. Except in the case of a new service or where a tenderfor an altered route is accepted the route to be travelledshall be the approved road or route followed in the conveyanceof mails under the contract expiring on 30th June, 1935.

4. All tenders must be submitted on the printed formsupplied by the Postmaster-General's Department. 5. In the preparation of tenders, care should be exercisedto give all the particulars for which the form provides. Indescribing the route of the service on the tender form thedescription given should coincide with that appearing in thelist of services hereunder. 4. The successful applicant will be appointed OrdnanceMechanical Engineer with the rank of Lieutenant (pro-visionally). He will be on probation for a period of eighteenmonths and may be sent to England for training.

His salary will be £446 (L409) per annum with annualincrements of £26 (£23) to a maximum of £550 (£500).The figures not bracketed indicate nominal salary and thosein brackets actual salary after deductions under the FinancialEmergency Act have been made.

The rates of pay are subject to variation in accordance withthe cost of living determinations.

Selected candidates undergo a course offlyin training at Point Cook for a period of approximatelytwelve months commencing about the 15th July, 1935, andon taking up duty after graduation are appointed PilotOfficers in the General Duties Branch:

4. Successful candidates will be allowed free travelling toPoint Cook to take up cadetships. During the currency ofthe Financial Emergency Act an allowance of 8s. 3d. per diemi, made and ls. 6d. per diem towards the cost of messing.Singe quarters are provided free. The salary of a singlePilot Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force during thecurrency of the Financial Emergency Act is £316 per annumwith free single quarters, and £36 per annum deferred pay.Within 3i years after appointment to cadetships such officerswould normally be receiving a salary at the rate of 1419 perannum after promotion to Flying Officer, and £45 12s. 6d. perannum deferred pay.

Subject to good conduct, diligence and efficiency, every adultwill be entitled to annual increments until a maximumof £170 is reached.. Where the remuneration specified in thisnotification is varied by the operation of Public Service Regu-lation 106a, the varied amount will replace the specifiedremuneration.

An officer required to live away from home may be paid aminimum remuneration of £98 per annum.

Application forms are obtainable from thePostmasters at the examination centres named above, andapplications should be completed and lodged with the Post-masters at the New South Wales centres not later than 12 noonon Monday, the 25th February, 1935, and at the Queenslandcentres not later than 6 p.m. on Thursday, 28th February,1935.

In the case of the New South Wales centres, applicationsreceived after 12 noon on 25th February, 1935, will be rejectedunless the applicant has advised the Postmaster at the selectedcentre by letter or telegram prior to 24th February, 1935, thatshe is forwarding an application and actually posts her applica-tion prior to 24th February, 1935.

Vacancies.It is anticipated that during the twelvemonths in which successful candidates will be eligible forappointment only one vacancy will occur at each of the centresof examination.

Eligibility. Successful candidates will, during the period oftwelve months following upon the publication of the resultsof the examination in the Gazette, be eligible for appointmentin their order of merit to the centre for which they qualify,provided there are no telephonists already in the Common -

Where two uí' more candidates secure the same total ofmarks, their order of merit shall be determined by marksobtained for (a) Arithmetic and (b) Spelling, and wherethose ma rks are equal, then by lot.

'Appointment Subject to Certain Conditions. A successfulcandidate must, upon appointment. produce evidence of thedate of her birth and a medical certificate, satisfying theBoard in such particulars as it may determine, of sound bodilyhealth end freedom from physical defects. These certificatesshould not be obtained by a successful candidate until she isinstructed to furnish them. Upon the confirmation of berappointment, an officer will also be required to contribute tothe Commonwealth So perannua tion Fund.

Qualified candidates who on appointment are already tem-porarily employed, or who take up duty within fourteen daysof the date of notification by the Chief Officer of their appoint-ment, will be regarded for seniority purposes as having enteredthe Service on the date of the Public Service Inspector'sappointment certificate.

Refusal of Appointment. If a successful candidate declinesto accept an appointment offered to her, or fails to replywithin seven days to a communication from the Board or aPublic Service Inspector,. or the Deputy Director, Posts andTelegraphs, respecting her nomination to the Public Service,her name may be removed from the " Register of PersonsQualified for Appointment. ".

Practical Testa Subsequent to Appointment. Every personappointed to the position of Telephonist shall, after the expira-tion of three months from the date of appointment, be testedhi clearness of speech and acuteness of hearing over a tele-phone line and in poetical efficiency in the operation of a tele-phone switchboard. If an appointee fails to pass this testher appointment will be annulled.

A PPLICATIONS are invited from officers of the Fourth11 Division in New South Wales, whose age does not exceed

30 years at last birthday, for temporary transfer for trainingfor the position of Lineman.

The following conditions will apply:Selection of applicants will be made on the basis of

seniority, subject to medical examination by theCommonwealth Medical Officer as to physical fit-ness for Lineman's duties and suitability in otherrespects.

(ii) Temporary transfer as Lineman will be for a periodof six months, with payment of higher duties allow-ance under the prescribed conditions.

( iii) Where it is necessary to transfer a successful appli-cant from his head - quarters for the purpose ofundergoing training, the prescribed travellingallowance will be paid, but the applicant will berequired to pay his own fare to the location oftraining. The amount involved in payment ofsecond -class fare will- be reimbursed upon applica-tion upon

(a) the officer's permanent allocation as Line-man after passing the prescribed test, or

(b ) discontinuance of training for medicalreasons only.

( iv ) An officer who does not display the necessary aptitudefor the duties of Lineman may be retransferred tohis former or an equivalent position at any timeduring the period of training.

(v) At the expiration of six months, trainees will besubjected to a practical test of the standard of theprescribed examination for appointment as Line-man, and those who pass the test will be eligiblefor promotion as Lineman under section 50 of theCommonwealth Public Service Act.

Applications should be lodged not later than 28th February,1935, with the Deputy Director, Posts and Telegraphs, Sydney.
