Chinas Protein Meal Use Comparatively Strong

Protein meal use in China (on a soybean meal equivalent (SME) basis) is expected to nearly

double the level of just 7 years ago, driven by the growing use of commercial feed in the

expanding swine, poultry, and aquaculture sectors. Small-scale swine operations have

become more specialized, sophisticated, and larger. These operations are also now using

more commercially-produced feed that contains a higher percentage of soybean meal.

By comparison, protein meal use in the EU and the United States has been relatively stable.

In the EU, the availability of feed grains, particularly feed quality wheat, has limited the

growth of protein meal use. In the United States, increasing availability and use of

competitively priced distillers dried grains, continues to displace some soybean meal.

OVERVIEW

Global soybean trade is raised this month reflecting larger U.S. exports resulting from increasedexportable supplies. Global production is higher on gains in the United States, India and the EU.Global demand for soybean meal and oil is expected to be strong. U.S. season average price is at arecord.

SOYBEAN PRICES

U.S. export bids, FOB Gulf, in Augustaveraged $530 per ton, continuing atthe level seen since March. Dryweather in parts of Midwest andconcerns over crop prospects havesupported prices.

As of the week-ending September 1,U.S. soybean commitments(outstanding sales plus accumulatedexports) to China totaled 25.6 milliontons, compared to 23.2 million a yearago. Total commitments to the worldare 42.3 million tons compared to 41.3million for the same period last year.

2011/12 TRADE OUTLOOK

U.S. soybean exports are raised 400,000 tons to 38.5 million reflecting a larger crop. Canadas rapeseed exports are up 200,000 tons to 6.8 million on a larger crop. Brazils soybean meal exports are cut 500,000 tons to 14.4 million to reflect reduced crushing. Indias soybean meal exports are up 500,000 tons to 4.4 million supported by larger crushing.
