OIL PASTELS

Oil pastels are very different from the pencils and colored pencils you have been working with this semester. Oil pastels are made to blend very easily—they are soft, oily and designed to be mixed and spread together on the paper. They are used by professional artists especially for these qualities

Page 18: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

• Arrange a still life of 3-5 items. You may bring a printed photo (you will not look up photos), bring items, or use items provided in class.

• You will then sketch the still life lightly.

• Lastly we will begin coloring with oil pastels. You will need to follow the steps provided.

OBJECTIVES

• You will:

• Implement your knowledge of contrast and value by creating a still life drawing using oil pastels.

• Make a draft and make revisions to your work so that you have the best possible artwork.

PRACTICE!!! BE SURE TO LISTEN & FOLLOW ALL STEPS

• You will be receiving a small piece of paper.

• First: LIGHTLY draw an apple in the center.

• Second: LIGHTLY draw a line for a table.

Page 21: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Use a light blue to color in the entire wall.

• Use a darker blue to color about an inch and a half around the apple.

• Use a purple to color next to the apple.

ALWAYS LIGHTLY COLOR

Page 22: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Using only one finger, smudge the background so that the colors blend together.

• If you used too much pastel—you’ll notice it beginning to clump.

SMUDGE THE BACKGROUND

Page 23: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Add another light layer of the same colors in the same places.

• Smudge it again.

• This step will fill in the light or missed areas.

Page 24: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Lightly color the table with an orange and a brown.

• Smudge it with a different finger (so you don’t mix the blue in).

Page 25: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Add more brown and orange.

• Smudge again.

Page 26: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Finish smudging the table.

Page 27: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Lightly color in the apple with yellow.

• Don’t smudge it yet.

Page 28: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Go over the darker side of the apple with a light green. Notice a circular shape is used.

• Smudge the apple.

Page 29: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Be sure to smudge the apple so that the green makes a circular shape.

Page 30: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Go over the light green with more green.

• Smudge it.

Page 31: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Should look similar to this.

Page 32: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Add dark green in a circular shape.

• Do not go all the way to the edge of the light green.

• Do not put a lot of dark green by the stem.

Page 33: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Smudge it.

• Maybe add more & smudge again.

• Use green & brown to add a stem. This is tiny so you won’t be able to smudge it unless you use a folded piece of paper/tissue/paper towel.

Page 34: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Use red to add a small shadow to the table by the apple.

• Then put a TINY amount of black in the shadow in the area closest to the apple.

• Add a white highlight to the apple.

• Smudge it.

Page 35: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Touch up the areas around the apple so no white is showing.

• Wipe it with a paper towel

• You may take your drawing with you. Keep it or give it to a friend or family member.

• NEXT TIME—

• Bring 3-5 items or a photo of these items.

• Choose items that don’t have tiny details or that can be simplified.

• Try to find items that are meaningful to you or express who you are.

• You will not have time to look for these next time.

AGENDA FOR DAY 2

• Get out your 3-5 items or your photo.

• Lightly sketch the items on any paper that you have.

• Begin the final drawing.

• Color the background with oil pastels.

• GREAT JOB last time! I saw a lot of wonderful drawings so I know you’ll do well today!

• Some of you weren’t happy with your finished product but remember—you still learned what to & not to do so that you can do a great job today

MAIN TIPS FOR OIL PASTEL• Work background to

foreground.

• Work light to dark.

• Do not use black until the end.

• Do not apply too much oil pastel when building colors!

Page 41: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 1: DRAWING THE STILL LIFE• Draw the contours of

the objects.

• Be fully aware of the shape of each individual form and its position in relation to the other forms.

• Use a light color or a pencil.

Page 42: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

•The foreground and background were colored using a dark and light green.

Page 43: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

•A tissue was then used to soften the texture of the pastels and blend the color more smoothly.

Page 44: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 2: APPLYING TONE AND COLOR• Next some blue was

lightly applied to create the areas of shade.

• Use the tissue to blend the colors together and to refine the merging tones of the shadows.

Page 45: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 3: COLOR THE STILL LIFE FROM BACK TO FRONT

• Move on to the objects at the back of the still life.

• A basic brown crayon was used to draw in the dark tones of the bottles.

• The lighter tones and reflections were left as the white of the paper.

• A tissue was used to smooth out the texture and blend the tones more gradually into one another.

Page 46: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 4: COLORING THE VASE

• The form of the large vase on the left was built up with broad layers of yellow, red and blue.

Page 47: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• These colors were blended together with a white crayon.

•A tissue was then used to smooth and unify the overall tone.

Page 48: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 5: ADDING THE REFLECTIONS TO THE SILVER CUP

• The distorted shapes of the reflections on the silver cup were carefully drawn, however, they were loosely colored exercising care not to overdo the darker tones.

• These reflected colors and tones were mixed by various combinations of red, blue and dark green.

• The lightest tones were achieved by allowing the white of the paper to shine through.

• No black was used in the creation of the darker tones.

Page 49: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 6: COMPLETING THE BASIC COLORS AND TONES

• The final step in completing the basic colors and tones of our still life was to shade in the green apple.

• It was initially colored using a bright yellow.

• The areas of darker tone on the apple were suggested by smudging a light green into the yellow.

Page 50: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 7: ADJUSTING THE COLOR AND TONE FOR DRAMATIC EFFECT

• Adjust tone to create contrast.

• In the background, a dark blue was blended into the green base color to deepen the darkest tones behind and below the objects.

• A layer of white was also applied to subdue the luminosity of the green.

• In the foreground, the subtle variations of tone and reflected color were suggested with blended layers of white, blue and yellow.

Page 51: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 8: BUILDING UP THE FORM OF THE VASE• The form of the vase on the

left is built up using a thin layer of white to strengthen its lighter tones and a blended mixture of red, yellow and blue to deepen its darker tones.

• A small line of reflected light is highlighted down the right side of the vase to increase its contrast with the background.

Page 52: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 9: INTENSIFYING THE COLOR AND TONE OF THE BOTTLES

• Continuing the process of working from back to front, the colors and tones of the two bottles are now intensified.

Page 53: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

• Blues and reds are blended into the brown of the bottles to deepen the density of their dark tones while a full spectrum of light colors including pinks, yellows, oranges, greens, blues and violets is used for their reflections.

Page 54: Oil Pastel Drawings - msjonesartclass.files.wordpress.com · •We will be looking at contrast & oil pastel drawings. •One person per table will get pastels for your table. OIL

STEP 10: POLISHING UP THE FINAL IMAGE

• To complete the still life, the tonal contrasts of colors in the silver cup and the apple are exaggerated by dramatically darkening the reflections and shadows on both objects.

• Various mixtures of blue, red, dark green and brown were blended to create the darkest areas of tone in these objects, while a little white was applied as highlights and to sharpen contrasting edges.

• Finally, some small amounts of black were used to deepen the very darkest tones.
