The solution designed by Converteam is based onVariable Speed Drive Systems (VSDS.) We providecomplete systems to drive compressors and pumps,from the network to the electric motor shaft end.With more than 30 years’ experience, our provenVSDS solution uses high performance drive conver-ters connected to synchronous or induction motors.Due to the development of power electronics com-ponents, which allow increased current and voltageratings, drive applications for high power installa-tions such as LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) compres-sion trains are now available.

Always at the cutting edge of technology,Converteam now challenges the sub-sea techno-logy in developing a new gas compression systemdedicated to exploitation at great depths. The elec-trical package of the sub-sea compression stationwill mainly consist of switch breaker modules, pres-sure compensated power transformers, variablespeed drives and high-speed motors cooled by processed gas. In addition, an all-electric controlsystem will be designed to control and regulate the sub-sea compression system, including an unin-terruptible power supply system for critical loads.

Variable Speed Drive Systems (VSDS) step-by-step

Converteam’s electrical solution is based on Variable Speed Drive Systems (VSDS.) It is a complete systemfrom network to shaft end, essentially comprised of:• transformer• frequency converter • electric motor • auxiliaries

From the network

Depending on the type of frequency converter andpower rating, the transformer is designed to mini-mize disturbances to the power network. If requi-red, harmonic attenuation of the system with filtersis added.

Going through the Frequency Converter

Thanks to the use of high voltage semiconductordevices in inverters, all standard medium voltagesare available with a range of frequency converterfrom a few megawatts to more than 100MW. Adrive power of up to 3MW can be implementedwith air-cooled versions; more powerful applica-tions require water cooling.

The fully digital controller is a state-of-the-artpower electronics controller (PEC) featuring vectorcontrol. It incorporates a monitoring system whichensures maximum protection and immediate reco-gnition of irregular conditions.

MV7000 Drive Systems 1 to 32MW

The MV7000 high performance medium voltage drive offers outstanding performance and excellentreliability with a very compact design. Based on powerful press-pack IGBTs (Insulated Gate BipolarTransistors), the MV7000 medium voltage drive often eliminates requirements for filters and neverrequires power factor correction. The MV7000 drive family covers the medium and high power rangeup to 32MW at motor voltages of 3.3 to 6.6kV.

The MV7000 drive is modular and features diff e re n toptions, such as regenerative front ends, dynamicbraking choppers, connection to a DC link. TheMV7000 is water cooled. The MV7000 is suitablefor induction motors but also for synchronousmotors with dedicated high performance vectorcontrol, in all speed ranges from marine low speedpropulsion drives to high speed compressor drives.

The latest generation of IGBTs with more activepower and lower losses places the MV7000 drive asworld class in terms of reliability, efficiency andpower density. The MV7000 is a PWM 3-level neutralpoint clamped (NPC) inverter providing:• excellent output waveforms• very low motor current harmonics• operation at very low frequency, full torque or

operation at high frequency up to 300Hz.

SD7000 Drive Systems up to 100MW

Based on synchronous motor and thyristor technology, SD7000 is the mature and proven solutiondedicated to high power / high speed. This Load Commuted Inverter (LCI) is ideally suited tocontrolling the power in loads where high dynamic performance is required, such as large compressors.This technology offers a very high availability and reliability level for continuous operation 365 days ayear, with maintenance every 6 years and brings operational flexibility.

The SD7000 is a Load Commuted Inverter (LCI)divided into three main parts:• the thyristor rectifier bridge, known as the

“machine bridge”, and • an intermediate DC circuit, whose reactor ensure s

decoupling between the network and the machine bridges.

The SD7000 drive is modular. Our range covers alarge choice from 3.1kV to 7.7kV and from 10MWto 100MW. In addition, Convert e a m ’s compre h e n s i v e

High Speed

Unique expertise in high speed machines

Converteam was the pioneer in the development of high-speed solutions. A series of induction motorshas been specially built to meet most demanding requirements of compressor systems as regards speedand capacity.Our high-speed drive solution now allows direct connection of an induction motor and compressor,eliminating the need for a gearbox. This gives unrivalled improvement in overall drive system efficiency.With the capability to operate at very high speed, up to 20,000rpm, the weight and dimensions of thecomplete unit have been significantly reduced. In addition, the magnetic bearings eliminate the optionaloil lubrication systems for motors and compressors, thereby reducing maintenance costs.

Integrated concept

The high speed induction motor and the compres-sor are installed inside the same pressurized casingdirectly connected to the gas pipeline. A portion ofthe gas is used to cool the motor. No gearbox isrequired. With magnetic bearings, the installation iscompletely oil-free.This arrangement is perfectly suited for gas com-pression and gas storage stations. The integratedconcept is environment friendly, with low noise andemission-free. The replacement of gas turbines byelectric motors significantly contributes to thereduction in emissions and therefore to compliancewith ever more stringent regulations.

Separate motor

This solution is provided when the process gas can-not be used to cool the motor (highly corrosive ordirty gas.)The high speed motor offered by Converteam is atwo-pole induction motor with squirrel cage andlaminated rotor. The cooling medium is generallyair, cooled in a closed circuit in an air-to-air or air-to-water heat exchanger.Lubricated bearings or magnetic bearings can alsobe used. Due to high quality design and manufacturing, thehigh speed induction motor offers excellent per-f o rmance, efficiency and power factor as well ashigh re l i a b i l i t y.

There are many benefits in using an “all-electric drive” instead of a mechanical drive. It is environmentfriendly, both in terms of emissions and efficiency, to use motor drives fed by electrical power producedfrom a larger power plant. The use of a motor drive eliminates the need for a helper motor or otherequipment for starting high power shaft lines. A modern drive converter provides the capability to ridethrough minor line system disturbances and power interruptions.The features of the electric motor are: high reliability, high availability and maintainability. In addition,the converter provides process flexibility with no constraints from the 50/60Hz supply frequency.
