Oil falls overnight

U.S. stocks advanced, after the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fell to its

lowest in a month, as Yahoo! Inc. led a rebound in technology shares

before Friday’s labor report.

Alibaba Group Holding Inc. jumped 7.5 percent after reporting a 45

percent increase in quarterly revenue naming a new CEO. Yahoo,

which owns a stake in Alibaba, added 5.3 percent.

The S&P 500 added 0.4 percent to 2,088 at 4 p.m. in New York, near

its average price during the past 50 days. The Dow Jones Industrial

Average gained 82.08 points, or 0.5 percent, to 17,924.06. The

Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 0.5 percent.

Airlines jumped the most in more than three months amid oil’s decline,

with a Bloomberg gauge on U.S. carriers up 3.5 percent.

German equities swung to gains from losses, helping erase an intraday

decline in European stocks.

The Stoxx Europe 600 Index added less than 0.1 percent to 388.98 at

the close of trading, after plunging as much as 1.8 percent. A drop in oil

and metal prices sent commodity shares tumbling, while travel

companies gained. The Stoxx 600 has fallen 6.1 percent from a record

in April, when valuations were at the highest in at least a decade.

The ASX was down 46.5pts, or 0.80 per cent, at 5645.7pts on

Thursday. US markets fell again after disappointing jobs data and a

warning from Fed Chair Janet Yellen concerning high equity valuations.

The US losses sent ripples through international markets, including

Australia. The ASX fell sharply in the opening minutes of trading, but

partially recovered soon after. The Utilities and Metals and Mining

sectors led the selloff, falling 2.2 and 1.43 per cent respectively. The

Australian dollar has been making gains over the past few days. After

briefly rising above $0.80, it retreated later in the day and is floating

around $0.7987 as of 4:30pm (AEST).

Caltex Australia (ASX:CTX) was down 40c, or 1.16 per cent, at $34.00

per share. The company announced a significantly improved profit of

$162m for the March quarter, compared to the $96m profit from the

previous corresponding period.

Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) was down 58c, or .98 per cent, at $58.54 per

share. Rio’s Chief Executive Sam Walsh has defended the company’s

iron ore expansion, saying it is not to blame for the falling price of the

commodity.

Two Months of Gains

The Australian employment data showed that the job

market weakened in April after making two months of gains

previously. The country’s employment fell by 2,900 jobs,

missing the projected 5000 job increase by a significant

amount. The unemployment percentage ticked up 0.1 per

cent to 6.2 per cent. The data released on Thursday also

showed a fall of 21,900 in full-time employment and a

19,000 increase in part-time employment. The March

employment figures were revised to a gain of 48,200 jobs,

following the 38,000 job gains in February. Australia’s

participation rate was unchanged in April at 64.8 per cent.
