I use to believe in Cinderella and the fairy tale princess. I fantasized that one day my knight in shining armour will come and sweep me off my feet

and we will live blissfully happily ever after, for the rest of our lives. I even sometimes pictured what I would be wearing and the clothes changed according to the latest fairytale I just read.

Fast forward several decades later. Such dreams have long been forgotten and replaced with stark reality on ground that life brings with its various challenges. But that is not my point today. My point is that fairytale endings do still happen but unlike my childhood fantasies

where you are swept off your feet, reality just demands that you work hard to achieve it! When our cover subject, Elohor Isiorho first started her

Beth Modeling agency, one presumed the best she could get were a few jobs now and again for her models. That was probably the case at the time

until she signed on with the globally acclaimed Elite Model Agency. Since then, a few of her models have moved on to greener pastures and are making waves on catwalks all over the world. The most spectacular one to date is Mayowa Nicolas who recently got chosen to feature in the next iconic Victoria Secret fashion show! The first Nigerian model to be given such privilege! This is the ultimate dream for every model worth her salt and our very own Mayowa is one of them! So who says fairytales cannot come true huh? But without her agent, Elohor’s dedication to hard work and perseverance Mayowa’s journey to her fairytale would have been nothing but a dream! Bottom line...nothing is impossible if it is your destiny or more realistically, you also work very hard to achieve it. The sky is literally the limit. It can be done.

Sophisticated yet trendy, Elohor Isiorho is everything you’d expect from a high-flying CEO of one of the industries’ most respected modeling agencies. From her early days as Miss Nigeria UK 2001, she delved into the world of modeling and today holds her pride of place as one of the most sought after modeling agents in the country. Of late, when she s not conducting photo shoots and model searches, she’s meeting up with A list clients on behalf of her recently launched luxury event company.

Earlier this week, she hooked up with KONYE CHELSEA NWABOGOR and talks about her career, starting the agency, what it takes to be a successful model and lets us in on her journey with Prive Luxury Events.

Beth Model Management has been a key player in the fashion and modeling industry for over ten years now. What are the values you stand by that has helped you achieve this?

Persistence, patience, commitment and honesty are the core values of beth Model Management and I try to imbibe this in every model we represent. you know, it is the energy you put into what you do that determines the end result.

How did you get started?beth Model Management was established

after I moved back from England in 2004. I used to model back then in England and I also won a beauty pageant, Miss nigeria Uk 2001. at the time, I had no idea what I wanted to do but I was getting a lot of offers from different designers, clients and brands to model for them. naturally the next step was to find an agency to start my career, I made my findings and got to know there was no good modeling agency in nigeria with international standard. I saw the need for this and decided to start up my modeling agency, 13 years later, here we are. In 2007, I got the franchise for Elite Model look. I was contacted by Elite Paris, one of the biggest modeling agencies in the world. This year marks 10 years with Elite and we have had so many success stories from winners to past contestants.

10 years is a long time. When did you eventually get a break?

yes it is, but as we all know all good things take time.

I have had several big breaks but the most remarkable ones include, securing the franchise to organize Elite Model look in nigeria, the nigerian representative emerging as the overall worldwide winner at the Elite model look world finals in 2016, the first african in 33 years and most recently, Mayowa nicholas being casted for Victoria’s secrets fashion show.

You’ve helped launch the careers of some major names, what was it like to watch them grow?

seeing that little boy or girl grow from a regular boy to a global super model, seeing them change, physically, mentally and seeing all they eventually do. There’s really no word that can adequately describe the feeling. It’s been amazing, remarkable, exciting and astonishing. Trust me, It’s a lot of feelings put together.

Regardless of its recent successes, the modeling industry isn’t taken very seriously in Nigeria. Why is that so, and do you see this changing?

13 years ago, it wasn’t as good as it is now, I believe it’s work in progress and eventually we would get there. People are beginning to understand how important models are today. The major challenge is uncertainty. People do not know yet how lucrative and promising the modeling industry is. They do not realize how much of a game changer it is, not just for the

economy but also for tourism and a whole lot more. I must however commend a few people who understand this and like me, are striving for a change in the industry.

Overall, what is a model’s benefit to being signed to your agency?

It’s a total life changer. Modeling jobs, money, fame and a whole lot. however we all know what works for a might not work for b, someone might get signed to the agency today and begin to make big bucks and your life changes from there, you become a regular face and clients favorites while some other person gets signed and it’s a totally different story. It’s all grace, luck and favor but it is an amazing platform.

How can a model know if an agency is reputable or not? What are signs to look out for?

The models they represent, the jobs the models partake in, their clientele, reviews from individuals and industry favorites, and their impact in the industry.

With increased competition and social media being more prevalent than ever, many models are turning to other creative outlets to do more and to stand out. How important is it for a model to have their own voice?

It is great for them to be vocal about all that happens around them, this is also one of the elements that have helped the modeling industry so far.

What has been your most proud moment in the 13 years of your career as a model agent?

seeing what all my models have achieved in this short space of time. It’s been from one level of excitement to the next.

What advice have you given to any upcoming model as regards working and being successful in the industry?

In all you do as a model, remember that

humility is key. also, do not forget where you are coming from. be consistent, dependable and punctual. be prayerful; say little or nothing because you do not know what the next person wishes you.

You recently delved into luxury event planning? Why the switch and what has it been like so far?

It’s not a total switch, my businesses are all inter related some way. Privé luxury event was borne out of the desire to meet the needs of some of my clients. I have always loved planning and organizing parties so I decided to launch my event company. Privé is an international luxury wedding and event company. we offer luxury and bespoke planning services for weddings, Events, private parties and corporate events.

Considering the state of the economy, is it a lucrative business?

yes it is. In nigeria there are so many parties, events, weddings everyday. so it’s a big market.

What does luxury mean to you?luxury can be a divisive word. Traditionally,

luxury denotes something that is enjoyed by certain people and not by others. It speaks of the privilege and exclusivity enjoyed by a select elite few. luxury does not necessary mean expensive but good taste.

If you could plan an event anywhere where would it be?

capri Italy. one of my favourite cities.

How do you manage to handle both businesses effectively?

It is challenging sometimes, especially when I have events lined up, but I am always able to tackle it, by having everything under control and making proper arrangements and schedules. also I have a great team.

So what’s a typical day like for you? Emailing my partners around the world,

Introducing new faces, meetings with clients and models

To what do you attribute your success as a business owner?

First and foremost, my god. he has been the one behind my success and I won’t be who I am or where I am without him. also my mother has always been there and has being very supportive in my journey.

What are your business goals?I would like the raise the bar for women in

business. I want to attain a level of success that will serve as a beacon or a lighthouse to encourage and inspire other women to break barriers. I want a situation where women are given the same respect and kudos as their male counter parts. also specifically, I want to build a global brand, where Privé and beth not only become household names around the world, but also are also synonymous with excellence.

Dear

WhO WIll ANSWER OuR CRy?

The short video was a chilling display of what can happen when idle hands have found service in the devils workshop. standing half naked, surrounded by men in military fatigues, a frightened look on their young faces, where men who but a few moments before were caught up in the euphoria of a nascent rebellion. as they were forced to lie face down in muddy water, humiliated, debased and what seemed later to be lifeless, I recalled another short video, more brutal in its act and much more graphic in its suppression of opposition, were a group of what can only be described as “prisoners” sat in hopeless abandon beside an open mass grave and one by one they stood up, walking like lambs to a slaughter, lay down at the edge of the grave, to have their throats slit.

Man’s unending brutality to one another has never ceased to amaze me but I have always wondered if there was a point in the journey to destruction when a timely intervention could have turned away wrath. as our nation strives to come to terms with all the various cries for self actualization, regardless of what name or guise they appear under, whether in yoruba land or amongst the people of the niger Delta, or be it the Igbos or the herdsmen of the north, one thing seems to stand out the most, the voices of a nation cannot be suppressed for people need to and must be heard but a soft word, timely spoken, can not only prevent war, it can also heal deep old open wounds.

The one living god understanding the base nature of the unsanctified heart, described it as desperately wicked. capable of conjuring the most despicable acts of terror, the unchecked soul is irrational in the actions it takes against perceived slights and will unleash a reign of violence upon its rivals. For this reason god raises leaders, men and women of righteous mien who have the heart to stare down evil and inspire ordinary men and women to extraordinary acts of courage. all nations come to a crossroad in time when they need someone, anyone, to step into the crosshairs, listening to the cries of the downtrodden, attentive to the injustice of history past and being a voice to the voiceless. now is the time, for a leader to arise who is capable of bridging the divide of diversity and uniting our people to the greatness we were created to attain.

will you answer the call?May god stir our hearts to do what is right for our

people.

holiday party season is upon us. you’ve got the dress, shoes and bag sorted, so the last thing to do is to decide what beauty look you want to go for as the finishing touch. sure, you could go for a bold, trend-inspired look (graphic eyeliner or glitter lips, anyone?), but personally, we’d opt for a classic, tried-and-tested party look.

by MOJIsOlA Allen

reD liPs Is there anything more glamorous than red lips? The bright scarlet shade has the power to make anyone look like a movie star (it’s one of our hangover secrets - seriously, try it), but only when applied correctly. be sure to prime your lips before hand by buffing away any dead skin with an old toothbrush or lip scrub, and don’t forget to seal with lip conditioner.

vamPy liPs If you’re looking for a more daring lip colour, opt for a dark vampy hue like burgundy, berry or even black if you’re feeling brave. It’s a tricky look to pull off and requires confidence - be sure to keep your eye makeup subtle and natural to avoid looking too ‘halloween’.

smoKey eyes To achieve the sultry look, be sure to use a dark grey, brown or black eyeshadow

blended across the eyelid, with a creme-based shadow on the brow bone to maximise the effect. Don’t forget to line your eyes too, and a few lashings of mascara will also add to the look.

METALLIC EYES nothing quite says festive like shades of sparkly gold, bronze and silver, particularly if there’s also glitter involved. The party-ready hues look great swept on the eyelids to dramatic effect - make sure you brush some into the corners of the eye socket and underneath the lash line too for the ultimate glam look.

BOMBSHELL WAVES often paired with a statement lip of sorts, retro waves are a classic beauty look for a reason - they’re universally flattering and really easy to create with a good pair of straighteners. Just wrap a section from the bottom to the roots, hold for a few seconds, then slowly pull down through the length of the hair. seal with plenty of hairspray. you’re welcome!
