1 PROJECT COMPLETION AND PRE-FAIR JUDGING AND COUNTY FAIR EXHIBITION In an effort to make project work easier to prepare for junior fair, the following information deals with requirements for project completion and pre-fair judging and county fair exhibition. A brief description of the project, additional guidelines for completing, suggested age levels, plus eligibility for Ohio State Fair competition can be found in the current Ohio 4-H Family Guide. Click here for State Fair Requirements and complete details. These projects will be judged prior to the county fair. Judging schedules will be sent out to all 4-H Families. ALL projects need to be displayed at the fair to be eligible for county and state awards. In an effort to make project work easier to prepare for junior fair, the following information deals with requirements for project

completion and pre-fair judging and county fair exhibition. A brief description of the project, additional guidelines for completing,

suggested age levels, plus eligibility for Ohio State Fair competition can be found in the current Ohio 4-H Family Guide. Click here for

State Fair Requirements and complete details.

These projects will be judged prior to the county fair. Judging schedules will be sent out to all 4-H Families. ALL projects need to be

displayed at the fair to be eligible for county and state awards.

Pre-fair Judging: Saturday, June 24, 9:00 to 1:00 p.m. (see judging schedule)

Project check-in: Saturday, July 8th, 10:00 am to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

4-H Special Interest Projects

Black, blue, brown, or khaki cotton or corduroy dress pants, jeans (No rips, tears, or holes), dresses, or knee length skirts (2 inches above knee) as well as a collared button down shirt, polo shirt, or blouse that must be tucked in. Any length of sleeve or color is acceptable. No shorts, No leggings, No yoga pants. Closed toe and closed heel shoes are to be worn. No discriminations will be made for religious beliefs.

91 Discovering 4-H Project Completion: 1. Complete all of the interest areas in the project book. 2. Complete all of the activities in each interest area. 3. Write a summary about this project & what you learned. Review your project book & the summary with a parent or project helper. Participate in at least two learning experiences, at least two leadership/citizenship activities and project review. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring completed project book and activity record. Create and bring an educational display on your workforce preparation experiences or accomplishments (e.g. as a camp counselor, CARTEENS facilitator, Jr. Fir Board Member, job, etc.) What have you learned, what skills have you gained and how will you use them. Be prepared for a personal interview with a judge answering questions about your project experience including general 4-H knowledge, project book knowledge and activities, your educational display.

383 Club Leadership 2 (new for 2017) 500 Science Fun with Physics (beginner)

Project Completion: Complete all tasks (all 12 experiments) as outlined in the project guidelines’ section. Participate in at least two learning experiences, at least two leadership/citizenship activities, and project review. experiments to judging. Create and bring an educational display on a topic of our choice from the project. Be prepared for a personal interview with a judge answering questions about your project experience including general 4-H knowledge, project book knowledge &

activities and project exhibit. 501 Rockets Away (2 liter) Project Completion: 1. Complete the “Planning Your Project” section of the project book. 2. Explore all of the interest areas. Complete all of the activities. “Going Beyond” and “Digging Deeper” activities are optional. 3. Construct 1 or more 2-liter bottle rockets and launch them at least 2 times. Keep a record of the launch results. 4. Take part in at least 2 organized project activities and at least 2 citizenship/leadership activities. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book, a display, and be prepared for a personal interview. 503 Rockets Away (Estes-type) Project Completion: 1. Complete the “Planning Your Project” section of the project book. 2. Explore all of the interest areas. Complete all of the activities. “Going Beyond” and “Digging Deeper” activities are optional. 3. Construct and launch an “Estes-type” rocket (from scratch or kit). At least 4 launches must be recorded in the Flight Data section on pages 19-22. 4. Take part in at least 2 organized project activities and at least 2 citizenship/leadership activities.

Be prepared for personal interview. 504 Electric Radio- Controlled Vehicles Project Completion: Complete the member project guide on page 8, at least 2 learning experiences and at least 2

leadership/citizenship activities. Complete the Safety checklist on page 11, all 10 Project Activities, at least 1 of the “More Challenges”

activities plus the Financial, Maintenance & Practice records on pages 50-53. After completing the records complete the Project

summary on page 10. You will purchase and assemble a radio controlled car or truck.

Pre-Fair Judging and County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book, assembled radio controlled car or truck and display

of what you have learned. The display can be a scrapbook, poster, 3-D display or any creative display. Be prepared to discuss your

project and exhibit with the judge.

507 Robotics with EV3

learned. The display can be a scrapbook, poster, 3-D display or any creative display. Be prepared to discuss your project and exhibit

with the judge.

508 Robotics 1 w/ EV3N More

512M Robotics Master (Advanced) Project Completion: Complete one major robotics project. Complete at least 2 learning experiences and least 2 citizenship activities. Project records including interview, budget, and photos. Pre-Fair Judging and County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book and display. Contestants are required to bring their own test surface to demonstrate their robot’s completion of a task of their choosing along with a printout of the program. 517 Bicycle for Fun, Level 1 Project Completion: Select a project helper. Be sure the helper initials each section as it is completed and signs the book after the

project is completed. Complete the Member Planning Guide on page 3. Complete at least seven activity sections including the Pit

Stop and 4 Pedaling Harder activities each year. Complete the Achievement program on page 4 within two years.

Pre-Fair Judging and County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book, bicycle, protective gear, and an educational

display of what you have learned. The display which includes at least one of the following: poster, kit, model, exhibit board, collage,

mobile, story board, scrapbook, notebook, journal, diorama and/or other creative means determined by you. Your bike and protective

gear may be taken home after judging; however your educational display must remain on display. Be prepared to discuss your project

and exhibit with the judge.

518 Wheels in Motion, Level 2 Project Completion: Select a project helper. Be sure the helper initials each section as it is completed and signs the book after the

Take part in at least 2 leadership activities. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book. Bring an example of at least one completed experiment or plans derived from one of the activities from your project book. The exhibit should be neat and organized to include anything it may be mounted upon. Be prepared for a personal interview. 528 Investigating Electricity, Level 2 Project Completion: 1. Choose an electronics project helper. 2. Complete all 4 steps of the planning guide on page 4 of the project book. 3. Complete at least 3 required & 4 optional activities each year. You must complete different required and optional activities when taking this project a second or third year. 4. Take part in at least 2 leadership experiences each year you take this project. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book. Bring a display of a circuit or switch from your book. The exhibit should be neat and organized to include anything it may be mounted upon. Be prepared for a personal interview. 529 Wired for Power, Level 3

Project Completion: 1. Choose an electronics project helper. 2. Complete the “Planning Guide” on page 4 of the project book. 3. Complete at least 3 required and 4 optional activities each year. You must complete different required and optional activities, if taken a second or third year. 4. Take part in at least 2 leadership activities. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book. Bring a poster or scrapbook on

what you have learned. Complete the project book. Be prepared for a personal interview. 530 Entering Electricity, Level 4 Project Completion: 1. Choose an electronics project helper. 2. Complete the “Planning Guide” section of the project book. 3. Complete at least 3 required & 4 optional activities each year. You must complete different required and optional activities, if taking this project a second or third year. 4. Take part in at least 2 leadership activities. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book. Bring an example of at least one electronic project derived from the activities, experiments or plans in the project book. The exhibit should be neat and organized to include anything it may be mounted upon. Be prepared for a personal interview. 531 Science Fun with Electricity Project Completion: Complete the planning section on page 5 in the project book. Explore each of the project interest areas. Complete the experiments for each interest area selected along with journal entries. Digging deeper activities are optional. Complete project summary. Take part in at least 2 project activities. Become involved in at least 2 leadership/citizenship activities. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Prepare a display that shows the judge and fair visitors what you learned and accomplished in your project. Your display can be a scrapbook, poster, item you created, or any method of showing what you have done. 540 Not Just for Knots Project Completion: 1. Complete the “Planning Your Project” Section of the project book (pg. 3 and 4). 2. Explore all 7 Interest Areas. Complete the recommended number of activities. 3. Take part in at least 2 learning experiences. Take part in at least 2 citizenship/leadership activities. 4. Write a one page report telling what you’ve done and learned through this project.

Bring a 3’ piece of ¼” or 1/3” sash cord to demonstrate knowledge of tying knots. Be prepared for a personal interview. 541 Crank It Up Project Completion: 1. Choose a project helper. 2. Complete the “Planning Guide” section of the project book. 3. Complete at least 7 activities each year. You must do different activities each year you take this project. 4. Make a portfolio to save all your notes, drawings, pictures, other things you create. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book. Explore all areas of your project book answering all questions. Prepare a poster or display of engines listing maintenance schedule for: air cleaner, oil filters, spark plugs, and blade sharpening. Be prepared for a personal interview. 542 Warm It Up Project Completion: 1. Choose a project helper. 2. Complete the “Planning Guide” section of the project book. 3. Complete at least 7 activities each year. You must do different activities each year you do this project. 4. Make a portfolio to save all your notes, drawings, pictures, other things you create. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book. Prepare a board of the parts of cranking system including, crankshaft, pistons and valves, and be ready to explain the intake and exhaust functions of an engine. Be prepared for a personal interview. 543 Tune It Up Project Completion: 1. Choose a project helper. 2. Complete the “Planning Guide” section of the project book. 3. Complete at least 7 activities each year. You must do different activities each year you do this project. 4. Make a portfolio to save all your notes, drawings, pictures, other things you create. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book. Explore all areas of your project book answering all questions. Prepare a display of the carburetor and electrical system of an engine. Be prepared to explain how each operates. Be prepared for a personal interview. 548 Lawn Care Project Completion: 1. Complete the “Planning Your Project” section of the project book. 2. Explore interest areas 1-5. (Area 3 is optional) Complete suggested number of the activities in each Interest Area. If taking this project multiple times, you must complete different activities. 3. Take part in at least 2 organized project activities and at least 2 citizenship/leadership activities. 4. Write a one page report telling what was done and learned through this project. Pre-Fair Judging & County Fair Exhibition: Bring your completed project book. Prepare a display (diorama) relating to the project. Be prepared for a personal interview. 550 Young Engineers in Solar Energy (new for 2017) 551 Tractor 1: Starting Up Project Completion: This project is the first in a series of 4 about agricultural tractors and equipment. This project is for those with little or no experience w/ agricultural tractors and equipment. Activities include using the owner’s manual, tractor parts, starting, and stopping a tractor. Basic tractor safety and more. Choose a project helper. Complete all the activities in the project book. Take part in an evaluation activity.
