Pam’s PosiesEach month as I write this article I marvel at the

accomplishments of our volunteers. You truly over-whelm me in your generosity, enthusiasm, passion for your projects, dedication to OSU Extension, cre-ativity and willingness to “get the job done!” Thank you for all you do.

I can’t believe how fast this month has gone. We started the month with a very successful Diagnostic Workshop for over 50 MGVs from all around, includ-ing ours. Many were very impressed with the scale and scope of our garden project. We have had some challenges in the gardens with water lines broken and the hot weather but we have managed to get through these issues. The field trial adopt-a-bed volunteers have been busy weeding and getting the beds ready for Carolyn to put down the treflan (done on June 26); this will help prevent a lot of the extra weeding. Dennis Latimer and Baylee Bennett are the summer assistants sharing the 40 hour job at Snyder Park and we are contracting with the 3 Musketeers (Deb Dean, Marilyn Hinderer and Donna Myers) to keep Utzinger looking good. The Fair Flower Beds group recently spent a morning cleaning up the en-trance garden to the fairgrounds and added mulch. If you haven’t been by there recently, this perennial bed is spectacular. The Garden of Eatin’ crew as well as the Early Ohio Settler’s Garden crew have been busy keeping their gardens looking great. Ed Wozniak and his Victory Garden crew have a pretty amazing garden with cabbage heads bigger than I have ever seen! The Garden of Eatin’ even provided eggplant to be grilled at the picnic; thanks to the group that put the picnic together. It was a lovely evening in the garden.

The Fair Flower Show is quickly approaching and all are busy getting ready for it - including garden-ers who are hoping for a blue ribbon! This activity is such a great service to the Senior Fair Board and the MGVs have been responsible for the increase in entries. Great work.

I am looking forward to our 2nd Wine Event in the Garden! July 8th is the date and we hope that many of our MGVs will support this event as well as tell their friends. The money raised from this goes back to the gardens. Please come! And Steve Broidy promised that the Weather committee will do a much better job than the last time. Each time I think of that event I feel the sweat dripping down my back! Phew - I loved it!

President’s MessageWell, here we are talking about July and I do

not know about you but I have had enough hot temperatures and high humidity days already. The month of June was a busy month in the gardens and I know July will be as busy. We have a Wine Event in the Park on Saturday, July 8th and if you do not want to work you could come as a guest. Please look on the VMS for more information. We also will be doing our first SPGA Jubilee in the park on Saturday, August 5th and we will need lots of help. Pam Bennett is “guesstimating” around 1,500 people coming. So, please sign up for jobs. Utzinger gardens in Madison County is working hard to get ready for the Farm Science Review in September and Becky Menozzi is warming up for the County Fair on July 21-28th. Some of us have been working in the gardens and turf plots in the park and again, watering is the big item. Dennis Latimer and Baylee Bennett, our interns, are doing a great job. I hope to see you in the gardens. I think this is probably the best way to become acquainted with your fellow gardeners – weeding together makes for friendships and a few good laughs.Jean Rickards

Janet’s JunipersDear Master Gardener Volunteers,

According to George Bernard Shaw “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

Cell Phones, Texting, Facebook, Twitter, Linke-din, Instragram, Snapchat, YouTube, Reddit, Pin-terest, Yelp, Blogs, e-mails and on and on and on......................

Is it possible we have so many methods of com-munication that we aren’t quite certain who we sent it to, when we sent it out, what we sent it through, is the information current, or if we even sent it? Yikes! What’s the answer? It’s Hort! Happenings!!

Hort! Happenings!! is not taking the place of VMS and/or the way we communicate through VMS. How-ever, it is an additional weekly communication tool which is on the front page of VMS as soon as you open it up. Check it out to find out what’s coming up, going on, being planned, changed, updated or new!

Following are some highlights you will want to know about:Springfield City Police Non-Emergency Dispatch Phone Number:

Please remember to stay safe and alert any time you are volunteering as a MGV, especially at SPGA which is our new community and garden location. If you think something is an EMERGEMCY, dial 911 IMMEDIATELY. If you find someone or something to be suspicious, a concern of yours, want someone to check it out and you do not feel threatened, you can call 937.324.7680. This will connect you to the Springfield City Police Non-Emergency Dispatcher.Adopt-a-Bed:

A special thanks to the following MGVs who are helping with the upkeep of the Research Trial Beds: Loretta Blazer; Missy Hawley; Claudia Jones; Karen Titone; Roger Franks; Wendy May; Dennis Latimer; Joyce Studebaker; Jane Skogstrom; Theresa Greg-ory; Anne Joyce; Vicki Stalbird; Carolyn Allen; Nancy Hobbs; and LaDonna Lowe. Wine in the Park: An Ohio Wine Event:

Committee RepoRts

UTZINGER GARDEN COMMITTEEUtzinger Gardens are merrily blooming: a little too

early, but beautifully! The Container area is getting a new look, and the Monarch Garden is moving right along! Donna Meister is the Landscape Designer for this new Garden, and she is a genius in de-sign! Keeping ahead of the weeds is a process, but we are confident that we can overcome. The Utzinger Garden is open weekdays from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM, so drive through and stop by when you are in the area. Viva la Utzinger! Marilyn, Donna, Deb and Utzinger Committee.

EARLY OHIO SETTLERS GARDENWe Settlers were in the garden this morning work-

ing once again on cleaning pig weed out of our beds. We will keep at it but back in the 1800’s they prob-ably added the weed to their stews or greens. The beds are looking good and we have added a few new plants to the medicinal and herb beds. Our one hop is very happy in its new bed but the other two are strug-gling but growing. The cardoon is extremely happy and we should see flowers this fall. Our first garden walk was on June 22 and we hope the public enjoyed our garden. Please stop by whenever you are in the park and check us out.Jean Rickards, Chair

Straw VoteThe new By-Laws have changed the month

on when the straw vote takes place. We now will do the nominations in July. You should have a form in the Blades and Blooms or find it on the VMS. You are to choose one (1) person you feel would make a good President-Elect, one person for Secretary, one person for Treasurer and one person for At Large. Linda Asebrook has served as secretary for 2 years and cannot run again for one year and Donna Myers cannot run for At Large for one year. Again, do not choose more than one person for each office. Steve Broidy will be looking for three members in our general membership to serve on the nomination com-mittee. This committee needs to be in place by September. The committee members will call the people nominated, see if they will run, set up our ballot. collect ballots and count votes in November when the election takes place. Please participate by passing in your straw vote at the General Meeting on July 12 at the Clubhouse at the SPGA or you can pass in to Jo Brown at OSU Extension. The votes will be handed to Steve Broidy, President-Elect, and he will tally them and give the names to our nomination committee. If you get asked by Steve to serve please answer yes as it takes all of us to make our Clark County Master Gardeners the greatest.

Thanks.Jean Rickards, President

HELPLINEWe have all of our volunteer days filled for

our Helpline this season. A big thank you goes to Carrie Moore, Lola Walston, Mike (Robert) Russell, and Steve Broidy. FIELD TRIP COMMITTEEWe had such a lovely and interesting day on our

field trip Friday, June 16, 2017. We had 29 people carpool to tour The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, lunch at BrewDog Dog Tap in Canal Win-chester, & then tour The Gardens at Gantz Farm in Grove City. It was a full day learning about our Ohio history & seeing so many fascinating artifacts at the Sherman House Museum and the beautifully de-signed gardens at Gantz. MGV have projects at both locations and gave us our garden tours. We are so grateful we had so many MGV friends to share this day together.Field Trip Committee Terry Reid, Janet Heater and Sally Day

SOCIAL COMMITTEE Thanks to all who attended and participated in the

organizing of the Annual Picnic. (Especially Chef Donna Myers: she’s the person to blame if your brat or burger was not cooked to your satisfaction!) A good time was had by all!

The July Meeting at SPGA Clubhouse theme will be “Keep it Cool”. The Social Committee will provide cold submarine sandwiches, and if you feel moved to contribute a dish to the festivities, please make it a cold one. Anything that does not have to be heated or plugged in will be a welcome addition. So, Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 5:30 PM at SPGA... Cool, Baby! Natheta Mercer, Deb Dean and Social Committee

Thank you for considering signing up for this program.

Fund-raising Committee, Fabenne Brandenburg Chairperson.

PERENNIAL COMMITTEEJune has had its highs and lows. Temperatures have

been really high! Because of the unusually high temper-atures, and lack of easy access to water for irrigation, the Perennial Committee wisely decided to postpone planting daylilies and ornamental grasses until early September, when the chances for successful planting will be more ideal.

The spent daffodil foliage has been removed from the “River of Daffodils” and plans are in the works to plant a few large containers to help beautify the north side of the Clubhouse area.

June activities continued with Favorite Garden Power Tools program. Special thanks to our participants and to Janet Myers, who facilitated the program on Kathy’s behalf.

July Garden Cleanup on July 5th will be an important one as we want our SPGA garden area to look its best for the Wine Event in the Park on July 8.

The Perennial Committee will meet at 4:45 p.m. at SPGA on Wednes-day, July 12, preceding the General Meeting.

Thanks to those who helped guide the folks from Downsize Farm in garden chores and activities. Down-size Farm serves people with special needs. Our friends came on June

28 to help with simple garden chores while Perennial Committee volunteers worked side by side and talked about weeds, insects and general gardening.

Our friends from Downsize Farm will come again on July 19 for a little work and more learning & fun in the gardens.Kathy McConkey, Dot Burkholder and Fabenne Brandenburg

VICTORY GARDEN COMMITTEEAll’s well in the victory garden with the warm

and moist weather creating excellent growing conditions. Weeds are always a problem but the veggies have outgrown the weeds so far. This should be another good harvest year. In another two weeks we will be harvesting onions and garlic. So thanks to all who helped pull weeds. Ed Wozniak

Pam’s Posies cont. from pg. 2

I am also really looking forward to our annual Sny-der Park Gardens & Arboretum Jubilee! The commit-tee has been doing a great job of brainstorming ideas and planning this event for August 5th. The sky is the limit with what we can do because of the space! Thanks to all for pitching in to help organize the first-ever Jubilee at SPGA.

We will kick off our fundraising in earnest in July. I will be working with Annie Colliflower, representing Kiwanis which is raising money for the Children’s Garden for their 2019 100th Anniversary Celebration. Annie is dedicated to helping raise the infrastructure for the gardens as she realizes that we need side-walks, irrigation and the basics to get people around the garden. I will have more information for you at the general meeting.

Again, I must thank you for all of your hard work that you give to the OSUE MGV program! I am off to Oregon in July for the International MGV Conference where I hope to pick up many more good ideas for our program.PamSPGA Committee Meeting

The next SPGA Committee meeting will be held on July 20th at 1:00 p.m. at the SPGA Clubhouse. The Agenda will consist of garden committee chair up-dates and any other updates that need to be shared at the time.

Just a reminder that anyone can serve on this com-mittee. All you need to serve is a desire to see this project happen. This committee has several sub-committees and all are invited to provide feedback, ideas, enthusiasm and excitement.

If you are on the committee and haven’t made this change to the VMS, please do so. If you would like to be on the committee, sign up on VMS so that you receive notifications of meetings and activities.

One of the sub-committees is the Donation Accep-tance Policy. This sub-committee is determining the process to follow when someone wants to donate something (other than money) to the garden. We will be having a meeting on July 6th at the Clubhouse at 1:00 p.m. I will be sending out the updated draft of the document to you prior to the meeting. We will also be discussing levels of donations and what the donor receives. This will be critical in the future as we move forward with fundraising. Pam

Montgomery County MGV Tour of the Garden and Picnic in the Garden

Please join the Montgomery County MGVs on Tuesday July 18th at 10:00 for a tour of our gardens followed by a picnic bring-your-own lunch. You will have the opportunity to meet MGVs from Montgom-ery County and learn about their projects. In addi-tion, after we picnic lunch, we will be heading to Hart-man Rock Garden for a tour. You are also welcome to join us there. No need to RSVP - just show up. If you are a garden chair and want to talk about your garden, please let Jo know that you will be there. If you or a representative from your committee can’t make it, I will gladly talk about the garden. Pam

Plant of the MonthAEGOPODIUM (ee-goe-POE-dee-um)Goutweed, Bishop’s Weed, Snow On the MountainLet me just say right off the bat, this plant may not

be one you will want to plant. So why am I writing about it? I believe you need to know how a plant grows so you can decide if you do or do not want it.This is a perennial that is easily grown in average,

dry to medium well drained soil in sun or part shade. Part shade is probably the best option. Aegopodium podagraria, commonly called goutweed in its varie-gated form, is a ground cover that will quickly cover a large area. It will quickly form a continuous mound of attractive foliage growing about 8 inches tall with an indefinite spread. Once it gets going it can be difficult to contain. ‘Variegatum’ has basal foliage that is light green with creamy white margins. It is less aggres-sive than the species but plants can revert back to all green leaves and greater vigor. To keep the variegated form, remove any plants that revert. One of the most

difficult things about grow-ing this plant is keeping it from spreading into areas where it isn’t wanted. The plants spread by means of underground rhizomes, and digging them up can cause them to spread even more as the bro-ken bits of rhizomes quickly form new plants. Ask me about plants I grow with this same habit. You can install an edging that sinks a few inches

under the soil around the bed to contain the plants. If it spreads beyond a desired area using an herbicide may be the only solution. The plant will only re-spond to herbicides when there is new growth on the plant. Use the herbicide only in early spring or mow down plants to allow new growth before spraying the plants.A relative of mine living in Wayne County, OH (God’s

country) planted this plant in a perfect location and it looked great! It was planted on the north side of her house up against the foundation of the house and surrounded by the driveway and sidewalks. It did not escape where it wasn’t wanted. Sometimes even an

invasive plant can be a good thing in the right loca-tion. As they say in the real estate business, “loca-tion, location, location.”Dot Burkholder

THE HISTORY CORNERGreetings Master Gardener Volunteers!

Summer is now with us, as the month of June always promises to bring. In July, we see summer come into full blossom...back yard barbecues, sun tanned faces, the sounds of children swinging on swing- sets filtering through the air, and, of course, Master Gardener Volunteers getting together to chat and paint the joy of a garden with living color. There are just so very many joys of summer to experi-ence and to be thankful for. The monarch butterfly with their ethereal movements and enchanting flight darting about the dappled color would certainly be counted among them. Understanding all the incredi-ble challenges they encounter to be among us makes them all the more dear to summer loving garden-ers. Approximately 99% never make it to adulthood. They are a significant food source for birds and other insects as is noted in the film, Flight of the Butter-flies. It takes two to three generations to make the journey from Texas to southern Canada though only one generation to make that trip back to Mexico. So, considering the innate strength and beauty they bring in those tiny magical wings, it really is no wonder that so many are working so hard to protect and keep that magic around for us all to admire as they bounce around in the dance of pollination. There are three prominent threats to the existence of that power-ful surviving 1%. Climate change, illegal logging in Mexican sanctuaries, and, of course, the loss of their milkweed habitat. Planting milkweed is where we can pitch in and make an impact. They are totally de-pendent on milkweed as both afood source and place for laying eggs. A study at Michigan State University points out the nexus between the widespread use of herbicide glyphosate and diminishing populations of monarchs (see:http://makewayformonarchs.org/i/archives/2682) and (http://makewayformonarchs.org/i/archives/2674). “The loss of milkweed,” writes the staff at Make Way For Monarchs: a Milkweed But-terfly Recovery Alliance, “can be seen as a collateral damage that has resulted from the newer farming practices of using genetically engineered corn and soy crops that are resistant to the herbicide glypho-sate, aka Roundup which allows the product to be applied much more broadly.” Carrie Moore

An appeal from your Blades & Blooms newsletter editor

As the saying goes “A picture is worth 1,000 words” or something to that effect. I am asking all of you MGV’s that put on an event or attend an event of interest to MGV’s could you think of the newsletter and take a couple of pictures (hopefully of people having a good time) and then emailing them to me. If they are to accompany a report great, but they can just be a picure from an event without a report. It would also help if you can identify people at the event and tell what the event is.

I know everyone likes to see pictures of what is happening with our group, especially if you aren’t able to attend a particular event. Also people in our community that receive our newsletter can see what we are doing and what things we are doing for our community.

Thank you from your newsletter editorLinda McCann
