It seems almost a cliché to put the Crimson Tide No. 1 to start the season, but do you want to bet against Nick Saban’s team? We didn’t think so. Even if the usual collection of outstanding talent has left Tuscaloosa in search of NFL fame and fortune, you just know the campus is blooming with all sorts of talent ready to step in for those who have left town. Even if some holes exist in the secondary, and Calvin Ridley’s departure has left the receiving corps lacking experience, don’t worry about the Tide.

Not that there isn’t any drama around the program. It begins under center, where Tua Tagovailoa’s National Championship Game performance established him as the fan favorite — and perhaps the coaching staff’s choice — at quarterback. He’s a better passer than Jalen Hurts and has the potential to be an extremely dangerous weapon.

ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE

The Tigers are clearly the class of the ACC, and each season Dabo Swinney and his staff lure even more talent to campus. It’s not just because of the beach volleyball court, mini-golf and casino (okay, there isn’t a casino) in the school’s bazil-lion-dollar football building. Clemson wins big, and that’s go-ing to continue this year.

Quarterback Kelly Bryant was strong last year, but he may not be able to beat out true freshman Trevor Lawrence, now that everybody thinks it’s okay to play newcomers under cen-ter. Travis Etienne and Tavien Feaster are strong backs, and Hunter Renfrow is back for his ninth season (or so it seems) to lead the receiving corps. The middle of the line needs some fortifi cation, but fi ve-stars are waiting to step in.

On the other side, ends Clelin Ferrell (18 tackles for a loss, 9.5 sacks) and Austin Bryant (15.5, 8.5) are frightening, and linebacker Kendall Joseph is a tackling machine.

Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs fell just short of a national championship last season, but it won’t be the last time this program reaches the CFB Playoff. Georgia is primed for another run at the top four in 2018, as Smart’s team is likely to be favored in all 12 of its regular-season games.

The defense was the strength of last year’s team, holding opponents to 16.4 points per game. This unit has a few holes to fi ll, namely at linebacker following the departure of Roquan Smith to the NFL. Thanks to elite recruiting classes, the cupboard is stocked with promising talent at every level.

Until the defense jells, Smart can ask more of his offense. Jake Fromm returns under center after a promising freshman campaign, but he could be pushed by fi ve-star freshman Justin Fields. The tailback position remains loaded despite the loss of all-time greats Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.

GEORGIA BULLDOGS

You can bet the Buckeyes are still stinging after last year’s snub by the playoff Selection Committee, despite an 11–2 record and the Big Ten title. Certainly, that 31-point pasting at the hands of Iowa sullied OSU’s résumé, but Urban Meyer’s team had a pretty solid argument for inclusion and no doubt heads into 2018 with plenty of motivation to leave no doubt about whether it belongs.

J.T. Barrett is no longer running the show on offense, but the Buckeyes remain loaded at the QB position. Dwayne Haskins, who shined in limited duty as a redshirt freshman, will be a star in the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes’ loaded defense will get a boost from new co-coordinator Alex Grinch, who has been nominated for the Broyles Award three times. He’ll really like working with end Nick Bosa, who had 8.5 sacks and 16 tackles for a loss last year and is poised to be one of the nation’s best defensive linemen in ’18.

MICHIGAN WOLVERINESThis is a pivotal season for Jim Harbaugh, whose struggles against his three main rivals are well-documented. His fourth Michigan team will once again be outstanding on defense. If the offense shows any improvement, this team can compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

MIAMI HURRICANESThe Hurricanes elbowed their way into the College Football Playoff discussion in November only to get thrashed by Clemson in the ACC title game. No one in Coral Gables will forget that feeling, and confidence is high on campus that Miami is building the type of team that can compete with the top dogs in any conference.

WISCONSIN BADGERSThe defense has been the star for the first three years of the Paul Chryst era. Now, the Badgers might have to light up the scoreboard if they’re going to make a run at the Big Ten title. Expect a heavy dose of tailback Jonathan Taylor, who might be the best running back in the country.

OKLAHOMA SOONERSIn Norman, they’re used to replacing Heisman quarterbacks and multiple All-Americans, and continuing to win — and win big. So downgrade the Sooners with caution. Since 2000, Oklahoma has claimed 11 Big 12 championships, responding to roster overhauls emphatically, with regularity.

AUBURN TIGERSGus Malzahn faces some lofty expectations. The Tigers’ sixth-year head coach recently signed a seven-year contract extension for $49 million, with $36.75 million guaranteed, after a 10–4 season in which he won the SEC West and defeated both National Championship Game participants (Alabama and Georgia). His task this year: Do it again. Good luck, Gus.

WASHINGTON HUSKIESThe Huskies take a back seat to no team when it comes to game experience. They’re positioned to run with college football’s elite again this season, and expectations are through the roof in Seattle. Washington may never have a better chance of reaching the National Championship Game. All Chris Petersen’s club needs to do now is stay relatively healthy — and win.

PENN STATE NITTANY LIONSDespite the loss of All-America running back Saquon Barkley and offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead, Penn State is going to get its points. But can a graduation-depleted defense stop opponents from getting theirs? That’s what will determine whether this team earns its third consecutive New Year’s Six bowl berth.

MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANSOrder was restored in East Lansing last season, as the Spartans bounced back from a 3–9 season to reach double-digit wins for the sixth time in eight years in 2017. With 19 returning starters from a team that went 10–3, the Spartans are a dangerous contender in one of the best divisions in college football.

FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLESFlorida State fi gures to be more fun with the swapping of Jimbo Fisher’s plodding pro-style offense for the up-tempo, spread attack new coach Willie Taggart employed at Oregon and South Florida. Will more fun result in more wins? Stay tuned.

MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGSNew coach Joe Moorhead, the highly respected former play caller at Penn State, inherits a roster loaded with talent. And with that talent come expectations that are much higher than normal in Starkville. If the Bulldogs stay healthy and catch a few breaks, they could contend in the SEC West.

VIRGINIA TECH HOKIESJustin Fuente’s fi rst two seasons at Virginia Tech have been a rousing success, and while the 2018 team is very young — three-quarters of the roster being sophomores or younger — the Hokies are good enough to challenge Miami for the ACC Coastal title.

NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISHHere’s the big question about the Fighting Irish: Was last year’s September-October run for a playoff berth a more accurate depiction of Notre Dame moving forward, or does the collapse in November at Miami (41–8 loss) and Stanford (38–20 loss) say more about the up-and-down Brian Kelly regime?

FLORIDA GATORSDan Mullen appears to be the right coach at the right time in Gainesville. Most aren’t expecting much in Year 1, but the Gators have enough talent — especially at wide receiver, running back and cornerback — to surprise if Mullen can coax productive play from the quarterback position.

STANFORD CARDINALFor years, Stanford has led with its defense, which it backed up with a rugged, run-fi rst offensive attack. That could change this year. The Stanford offense hasn’t eclipsed 40 points per game since 2011, when Andrew Luck lined up behind center. It could in 2018. And it might need to thanks to a defense in transition.

BOISE STATE BRONCOSBoise State is poised to reclaim its position as the top Group of 5 team in the nation. The Broncos boast a top-flight quarterback in Brett Rypien and an elite defense that returns nine starters. A second straight Mountain West title and a spot in a New Year’s Six Bowl are the expectations.

TEXAS LONGHORNSTexas improved from five to seven wins in Tom Herman’s first season. Getting to a bowl game was a nice first step. To challenge Oklahoma for supremacy in the Big 12, the Horns will have to show significant improvement on offense and hope that the defense doesn’t drop off too much despite key personnel losses.

USC TROJANSClay Helton has won 21 games in his first two full seasons — with a Rose Bowl win in Year 1 and a Pac-12 title in Year 2. Yet, not all USC fans believe he is the answer long term. This year, he will have to win without Sam Darnold under center.

OREGON DUCKSNow on its third head coach in three years — with Mario Cristobal stepping in for Florida State-bound Willie Taggart — Oregon is seeking continuity as it looks to return to contender status in the Pac-12. The key to the Ducks’ fortunes in the short term is keeping QB Justin Herbert healthy.

WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERSWith All-America quarterback Will Grier throwing to perhaps the nation’s best receiving corps, WVU will score plenty of points. The only question is whether it will have to score 50 per game to cover for a defense that has significant issues.

TCU HORNED FROGSThe defense will be stout (it always is), and there is an outstanding collection of talent at running back and wide receiver. The only unknowns at TCU are at quarterback (is Shawn Robinson the answer?) and on the offensive line (where four starters must be replaced).

TEXAS A&M AGGIESNew coach Jimbo Fisher inherits 15 returning starters and some top-flight talent. But the Aggies have lacked the physicality and depth to compete for championships in the rugged SEC. If significant strides are made in those areas, A&M could make a legitimate run at exceeding the eight-win plateau.

Playing against an option team is never easy, especially when it’s the fi rst league game for a heavily favored national title contender with everything to lose. Clemson’s peerless defensive front looks up to the challenge, but a Tech upset could throw the conference race into chaos right out of the gate. And Georgia Tech quarterback TaQuon Marshall has the ability to give any defense fi ts, no matter how formidable. Things don’t get any easier for the Tigers from here — the matchup with Tech is the fi rst of four relatively challenging ACC road games for the league favorites.

We seem to say this every year, but this is the Game of the Year in the ACC, and one of the best matchups on the national schedule. One of these two teams has won the ACC Atlantic Division in each of the past nine seasons, and this year promises more of the same. Florida State will be the most talented team that Clemson plays until the College Football Playoff. In fact, the Noles are probably the only team in the conference that can match Clemson’s talent level at most positions on the fi eld.

The top two teams in the ACC Coastal meet in a late-season game that fi gures to determine which team represents the division in the ACC Championship Game. The Canes were a little bit ahead of schedule in Mark Richt’s inaugural campaign, and they look to take another step toward returning the swagger to South Beach. Justin Fuente’s Hokies have traditionally been a thorn in Miami’s side, winning 14 of the last 23 matchups in the series, although the Canes have taken three of the last four.

Nothing is more rewarding for TCU fans than beating old rival Texas — and fans of the Horned Frogs have been pretty satisfi ed of late, as TCU has won four straight in the series, including a workmanlike 24–7 win in Fort Worth last season. If the Frogs can win this league opener on the road, it will send a signal to the rest of the league that TCU is good enough to make Oklahoma sweat in the Big 12 race. TCU is breaking in a new quarterback, so expect a steady diet of running back Darius Anderson in this one.

The OU-Texas game is traditionally the biggest game in the Big 12, and this year, it pits the top two teams in the league according to the Athlon Sports predictions. Two of the top young coaches in the game — Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley and Texas’ Tom Herman — meet for the second time, after Round 1 went to Riley in last season’s 29–24 Sooners win. Oklahoma will still be adjusting to life without quarterback Baker Mayfi eld, giving Texas a possible opening against the league favorites, although the Longhorns have offensive concerns of their own.

Expect a frenzied atmosphere in Morgantown on the Friday after Thanksgiving, particularly if the Mountaineers are still alive in the conference race. West Virginia, which features one of the top offenses in all of college football, is a popular dark-horse pick to win the Big 12 title and will put the ball in the hands of its All-America pitch-and-catch combo of quarterback Will Grier and wide receiver David Sills, who will test a Sooners defense that has proved vulnerable to the pass of late. Expect a thrilling, high-scoring affair that will provide a nice exclamation point to the Big 12 regular season.

The top two teams in the Big Ten West meet in Iowa City, and you can expect some classic grind-it-out Big Ten football. A win by Iowa, which plays only one of the top four teams in the Big Ten East (Penn State), would put the Hawkeyes in the driver’s seat in the division race, but the Badgers are riding a four-game winning streak in Kinnick Stadium, including a 17–9 win in their most recent visit in 2016. Last year, the Badgers held Iowa to only 66 total yards in a 38–14 rout in Madison.

Penn State plays Ohio State and Michigan State at home in a brutal two-game stretch that will determine whether the Nittany Lions can contend for the Big Ten East title. Fortunately for James Franklin’s club, there’s a bye week sandwiched in between those two matchups, which means that the Lions will be rested for their encounter with a Spartans squad that has won four of the teams’ last fi ve meetings, including a 27–24 thriller last season. Penn State will still be adjusting to life without star running back Saquon Barkley, but 100,000-plus screaming fans will help.

What’s not to like about this one? It’s one of the best rivalries in all of sports; it features the top two teams in the Big Ten East; two of the most prominent coaches in the sport are on display; and one of them, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, really, really, really needs a win over his team’s most bitter rival. Harbaugh will try to avoid becoming the fi rst Michigan coach to begin his tenure 0–4 vs. the Buckeyes, and he has the horses to get it done, especially on defense.

>MAYHEM MATCHUPS TO WATCH IN 2018

This late-season matchup fi gures to be the toughest Pac-12 game for Washington, the preseason favorite to win the conference title. Two of the top running backs in all of college football — Stanford’s Bryce Love and Washington’s Myles Gaskin — will share the spotlight in what should be one of the marquee head-to-head encounters of Heisman contenders in college football this season. Think this rivalry is important? The winner has gone on to play in the Pac-12 Championship Game in each of the last three years — Stanford in 2015 and ’17 and Washington in ’16.

The Trojans and Utes are Athlon Sports’ picks to fi nish fi rst and second, respectively, in the Pac-12 South. Adding intrigue to an already-crucial matchup, the Trojans will likely be starting a true freshman quarterback in JT Daniels. This will be Daniels’ fourth diffi cult road test of the season, following trips to Stanford, Texas and Arizona. How seasoned will he be for this trip to Salt Lake City? The Utes’ tough league slate — they don’t play Cal or Oregon State — makes this essentially a must-win for Kyle Willingham’s club if it wants to stay in the division race.

This once-great rivalry could be great again if new Ducks coach Mario Cristobal can return the program to national prominence. Oregon won 12 straight against UW between 2004 and 2015, but Chris Petersen and the Huskies have reclaimed ownership of the series. This year’s renewal features two great quarterbacks — Washington’s Jake Browning and Oregon’s Justin Herbert, the second- and third-team All-Pac 12 quarterbacks, respectively, according to Athlon Sports. Browning, a senior, has a slight leg up in experience, and the Huskies have a slight leg up in overall talent, although the Autzen Stadium environment could provide a nice equalizer for the Ducks.

Former Nick Saban assistant Jimbo Fisher takes his fi rst Texas A&M team to Tuscaloosa for the Aggies’ SEC opener. That’s some kind of welcome to the league. A&M fi gures to be one of the most talented teams Alabama will play in the regular season, and the unlikely event of an Aggies upset would throw the SEC West into chaos. It’s a tall order, though; the Tide remain the most talented team in the nation, with an embarrassment of riches at every position, including quarterback, where Tua Tagovailoa is likely to continue carrying the banner he picked up from Jalen Hurts in the National Championship Game.

Florida, under fi rst-year coach Dan Mullen, could emerge as the biggest threat to Georgia in the SEC East. The Dawgs will be the favorites, but weird things always seem to happen when these two teams meet in Jacksonville. The Mullen-Kirby Smart clashes will likely defi ne the division over the next decade, but it may take Mullen some time to catch up in the talent department, where he starts with a defi ciency this season. It would also help Mullen’s cause if the Gators got some competent play at the quarterback position, something they’ve lacked of late.

It’s arguably the best rivalry in college football, and it’s made more intense by the fact that Auburn is one of the few teams to enjoy any kind of success against Bama over the last few seasons. Gus Malzahn’s club won in Jordan-Hare last season and will be looking for its fi rst two-game winning streak against the hated Tide since Tommy Tuberville capped off his legendary six-game streak in the series in 2007. As if these two teams needed any extra motivation, the winner will likely earn a spot in Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.

2. BRYCE LOVE | RB | STANFORDThere have been 30 play-ers in Division I history to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a season. None did it more effi ciently than Love, who averaged 8.1 yards per carry in his breakout junior season. His numbers could have even been gaudier had he not been slowed by an ankle injury in the lat-ter half of the season.

4. J.K. DOBBINS | RB | OHIO STATE Dobbins rushed for 1,403 yards as a true freshman despite getting more than 20 carries only one time (in Week 1). His 7.2-yard average trailed only Bryce Love and Rashaad Penny among players with at least 175 rushing attempts. Dobbins’ biggest obstacle: He will face more competition for carries than most of the backs on this list.

3. JONATHAN TAYLOR | RB |WISCONSIN Taylor burst onto the scene in Week 2 of his true freshman season by rushing for 223 yards in a 31–14 win over Florida Atlantic. He topped the 200-yard mark two more times

and ended his fi rst season with 1,977 yards on a 6.6-yard average. He will be the offensive star for a preseason top-10 team.

>HEISMAN TROPHY CANDIDATES1. TUA TAGOVAILOA | QB | ALABAMA No player who has yet to start a game has received such offseason buzz as Tagovailoa — not even Tim Tebow in 2007. Alabama’s dual-threat sophomore quarterback teased us with his play as reserve in garbage time throughout the 2017 regular season before starting the second half of the National Championship Game and leading Alabama to a comeback win over Georgia. If he maintains that level of play — assuming he wins the starting job, of course — the native of Hawaii will fi nd himself in New York in December.

5. KHALIL TATE | QB | ARIZONA Tate’s numbers were obscene after taking over as the Wildcats’ quar-terback in Week 5. Consider the following: In his fi rst six games, he averaged 201.2 rushing yards per game while averaging 10.0 yards per passing attempt. That’s an unreal combination of rushing production and passing effi ciency. Tate should thrive under new coach Kevin Sumlin.

6. JAKE FROMM | QB | GEORGIA Used pri-marily as a “game manager” early in his true freshman season, Fromm took on a larg-er role in the offense down the stretch. He was nearly fl awless in wins over Auburn (SEC Championship Game) and Oklahoma (CFB Playoff Semifi nal) and also played well in the title game loss to Alabama.

7. WILL GRIER | QB | WEST VIRGINIA Grier thrived under Dana Holgorsen in his fi rst season at West Virginia, throwing for 3,490 yards with 34 touchdowns and 12 inter-ceptions. If the Mountain-eers emerge as contenders in the Big 12 — which is quite possible — he could emerge as a legitimate Heisman contender.

8. TRACE MCSORLEY | QB | PENN STATE The case against McSorley: Penn State lost offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead, its top rusher (Saquon Barkley) and its top pass catcher (DaeSean Hamilton). The case for McSorley: He will need to become an even bigger part of the Nittany Lions’ attack and could post the best numbers of his three years as the starter.

10. RODNEY ANDERSON | RB | OKLAHOMASlowed by injuries during his fi rst two years at Oklahoma, Anderson averaged 134.9 rushing yards over the last eight games — highlighted by a career-high 201 against Georgia in the College Football Playoff loss.

9. JARRETT STIDHAM | QB | AUBURN Stidham is poised to have a big junior season as the Tigers could skew more to the passing game thanks to the de-parture of Kerryon Johnson (1,391 rushing yards) and the return of their top six pass catchers.

11. Jake Browning | QB | Washington12. Drew Lock | QB | Missouri13. Ed Oliver | DT | Houston14. Brian Lewerke | QB | Michigan State15. AJ Dillon | RB | Boston College16. 1. DAVID BEATY, KANSAS (3–33, three seasons)The Kansas administration continues to support Beaty, but that cannot continue much longer un-less the Jayhawks begin to show signifi cant prog-ress. The numbers are horrifying: 1–32 vs. FBS opponents; last in the Big 12 in total offense all three seasons; last in the Big 12 in total defense in two of his three seasons; and negative scoring margins of 24.7 points per game (2017), 17.0 per game (’16) and 30.8 per game (’15).

3. BRAD LAMBERT, CHARLOTTE (17–41, fi ve seasons) After going a combined 10–12 as an FBS Inde-pendent in 2013-14 (the program’s fi rst two years in existence), Lambert and the 49ers have strug-gled in their transition to Conference USA. Char-lotte is 7–29 overall and 4–20 in league play since joining C-USA in 2015, including a 1–11 mark in 2017. The 49ers scored seven points or fewer in fi ve of 12 games last season.

4. SCOTTIE MONTGOMERY, EAST CAROLINA (6–18, two seasons)Montgomery was considered a rising star while serving as the offensive coordinator at Duke, his alma mater, but he has struggled in his two years as the head coach at East Carolina. The Pirates have won only three games each season due largely to some epic struggles on defense. Not only did ECU rank last in the nation in 2017 in both total defense (541.7 ypg) and scoring

defense (45.0 ppg), but the 7.7 yards per play al-lowed was the worst in college football in at least a decade.

5. MIKE JINKS, BOWLING GREEN (6–18, two seasons)Bowling Green averaged nine wins from 2012-15 and won three straight MAC East titles (’13-15), but the Falcons have slipped down the league’s food chain. They closed 2016 with some momentum — consecutive wins over Akron, Kent State and Buf-falo — but went 2–10 in 2017 thanks to a defense that allowed more than 500 yards per game.

2. BOB DAVIE, NEW MEXICO (30–45, six seasons)Davie orchestrated a nice turnaround in Albu-querque, guiding the Lobos to consecutive winning seasons in 2015-16, but things took a turn for the worse in 2017 — both on and off the fi eld. UNM slumped to 3–9 overall (1–7 in the MW), and then Davie was suspended for 30 days in wake of an athletics department inves-tigation into the football program. Tough times for the former Notre Dame coach.

6. KLIFF KINGSBURY, TEXAS TECH (30–33, fi ve seasons)Despite winning only six games in 2017, Kings-bury was retained for a sixth season at his alma mater for two reasons: The Red Raiders showed signifi cant improvement on defense, and they closed the regular season with a win at Texas. Still, the pressure will be on to take a step for-ward in 2018. Texas Tech is 16–29 in the Big 12 under Kingsbury’s watch and has not fi nished higher than a tie for fi fth place.

7. LOVIE SMITH, ILLINOIS (5–19, two seasons)It’s been only two seasons, but the Lovie Smith experiment is not going well. Illinois regressed from 3–9 overall (2–7 in the Big Ten) in 2016 to 2–10 (0–9) last fall, with eight of the nine confer-ence losses coming by 10 points or more. The Fighting Illini were very young in 2017 — they started nine freshmen and four sophomores in the fi nale against Northwestern — but there is no indication that they are talented. Recent hires at Purdue (Jeff Brohm), Minnesota (P.J. Fleck) and Nebraska (Scott Frost) will make Smith’s job more diffi cult.

>GETTING WARMLARRY FEDORA, NORTH CAROLINAThe Tar Heels have had a losing record in two of the last four seasons — including a 3–9 mark in 2017 — and have won more than eight games only once in Fedora’s six seasons. Another disappointing season would no doubt put him on the hot seat.CLAY HELTON, USCHelton is 21–6 overall and 15–3 in the Pac-12 in his two full seasons as the boss at USC, but the locals don’t seem convinced he is the right coach for the long term. Lopsided losses to Notre Dame (49–17) and Ohio State (24–7) over-shadowed an otherwise solid 2017 season.

PAUL JOHNSON, GEORGIA TECHJohnson signed a two-year contract extension in the offseason that carries his deal through the 2022 season, but things could heat up in Atlan-ta if Georgia Tech struggles again in 2017. The Jackets are 17–19 overall and 9–15 in the ACC in the last three years.

DEREK MASON, VANDERBILTMason reached a bowl game in 2016 and has defeated Tennessee in consecutive seasons, but he is 18–31 overall and just 6–26 in the SEC in four seasons. A defense that shined in 2015 and ’16 took a big step back last fall.

MATT WELLS, UTAH STATEWells won a combined 19 games in his fi rst two seasons but is 15–23 over the last three. He has one win in the past two years over an FBS team that went on to have a winning record (Arkansas State, 2016).

EVERETT WITHERS, TEXAS STATEHe’s recruited very well, but Withers will need to show some results on the fi eld in the very near future. The Bobcats are 4–20 overall and a horrid 1–15 in the Sun Belt in his two seasons.
