The FCF Pledge - "I share with you the warmth and glow of this campfire. These crimson
flames are a symbol of our fellowship and adventures in camping. I promise to share with
you the warmth of Christian friendship and with others the light of my Christian testimony. I
promise to keep alive the spirit of FCF in my personal life and to observe at all times the
principles of Royal Rangers."
It is my hope and prayer that as you read through this History of the Ohio Royal Rangers
Frontiersmen Camping Fellowship (FCF) that you will feel the past warmth and glow of
many a campfire. I hope that the past Christian friendships will be remembered and that you
will remember many a Christian testimony throughout these pages.
I hope you learn of events and happenings that occurred long before some of us Ole Timers
and Young Bucks became involved in this great Chapter. May this reading be fun and
allow you to enjoy the past to present.
Thanks to the many present day Frontiersmen who took precious time to meet with me and
share their memories. There are too many to list so I will not try that way I won't forget
anyone.
I also want to thank all of the Frontiersmen who have made sure to bring Young Bucks to the
FCF Trace's hoping that they could possibly touch the hem of the garment of Jesus. Without
these Frontiersmen making that journey, there would be no Ohio Royal Rangers FCF. You
my friends have made the History of the Ohio Royal Rangers FCF. For that, I Thank You.
Finally, I want to say that all the information contained in this history is as accurate as
possible. Remember friends, I received most of the information from our Ole Timers
from way back.

The Beginning
During the year of 1968 the Ohio District Council of Assemblies of God Men’s Director Ellis
Domionni who was also the Ohio Royal Rangers District Commander met with a few men in
Cleveland, Ohio. One man in particular was ask to become the Ohio Royal Rangers
Frontiersman Camping Fraternity (FCF) President. That man Ray Lambert accepted the
position and went to another District where he went through what was called back then the
FCF Initiation. Another man that was helpful in starting our FCF Chapter was Sonny Green.
Sonny joined right after Ray. This, was the beginning of the Ohio Royal Rangers FCF
Chapter”Johnny Appleseed”. The Johnny Appleseed Chapter had become apart of the
Colonial territory.
The first initiation for the Johnny Appleseed Chapter was conducted later that summer during
the Saturday of the Ohio District Royal Rangers Pow Wow. Ray took men from the District
to a farm not to far from the District Camp which was at Big Prairie, Ohio
Back then the FCF Chapter got together during the District Pow Wow’s and would meet and
fellowship during this event. It wasn’t until approximately 1975 that the Johnny Appleseed
Chapter started to hold what is now refered to as the District Spring Trace. This was due to
the National Royal Rangers FCF deciding that the Ole Timers and Young Bucks should meet
more than just at the District Pow Wow’s. In 1975 Sonny Green was appointed the Territorial
Representative for the Colonial Territory.
The Spring Trace of 1977 was the first year that the Johnny Appleseed Chapter gave out a
Trace patch for those who attended the event.
The Johnny Appleseed Chapter was a part of the Colonial Territory until 1981 when the FCF
territories went from 4 territories to 8 territories. The new Territorial name for the Great
Lakes Region was called the Voyager Territory.

1971 Pow Wow
During this year Norm Nethers, "Big Fox" was initiated in (while he was Ohio's first Deputy
District Commander) at Big Prairie Campgrounds; his most memorable part was after all the
'foo-fa-rahr ~.:." there was no wooded area large enough for the overnighter, "so they bussed
us over to Mohican State Park, near Loudonville, where they found an area to spread us out
and bed us down, but first Ray Lambert, built a little fire in a picnic area, for the presentation
of the meaning of the FCF Fire logo and the five logs --when a Park Ranger came on the
scene -apparently someone reported a fire -- and ALMOST THREW US ALL OUT OF THE
PARK -- Ray explained who we were and what we were doing; after which the Park Ranger
made us put out the fire and finally agreed to let us sleep there (as planned) but made
someone stay there all night (with the bus to take us back in the morning) to make sure none
of us would start any more fires! Good! We just wanted to get some sleep anyway -- but we
had a light rain during the night, so we did get dampened a bit, but not our spirits! It was a
great experience! " "Big Fox" was the second Pastor to come into the FCF in Ohio at that time; the first was Rev.
Mike Brandenburg, pastor at Berapark AG, Cleveland.
1973 Pow Wow
During the 1973 Ohio District Pow Wow Ray Lambert inducted some Young Bucks and Ole
Timers into the Ohio FCF Johnny Appleseed Chapter. During this year one certain Young
Buck named Tom Bender "Little Coon" joined. Here are his words. "Ray Lambert was the
FCF President then. We have had some shinin times since then. I was 15 at the time and Ray
sat there blind-folded with a tomahawk, sticking it in the ground all around the stalking stick
I was supposed to take without getting my hand butchered; it looked pretty real to me. And I
did get that stick without as much as a knick on my hand!!!"
1975 Pow Wow
This was the last year where the FCF initiation was conducted at the District Pow Wow. One
of the Ole Timers that came into FCF that year was Jon Miltenberger "Little Turtle". One of
his highlights was the Indian Chief where you had to earn your "Stalking Stick". He stated
that most guys had to go back and get the stick again because they gave it up after getting it
from the Old Indian Chief. "Little Turtle" said he never gave it up once he got it. He was
lucky. Another Old Timer that came in 1975 was Jim Barger "Eagle Heart". "Eagle Heart"
later served as our Chapter FCF President from 1978 -1986. Eagle Heart" also has served as
the FCF Voyager Territorial Rep for one (1) year where after that he was appointed to
Regional Coordinator for the Great Lakes Region Royal Rangers. Another young man that
went in 1975 was Jim Hoyer "Red Hawk". His most memorable moment was he had to do a
one (1) handed push up or eat a worm. Fortunately, he didn't have to eat the worm. Must be
nice to be young enough to do a one (1) handed push up. I wonder if "Red Hawk" could do
one today.
There were no records kept of how many young bucks and ole timers came in during this
year.
At all Spring Trace's there are numerous events that take place on Saturday of the trace.
These events could be Hawk & Knife Throw, Seneca Run, Black Powder Shootin, Flint &
Steel and so forth. All events would have a winner in the Young Buck (boy) category and the
Ole Timer (adult) category. There is also a Buckskin Ceremony where the Frontiersmen can
move up to the Buckskin Status. New Wilderness members are called out also during the
trace.
1977 Spring Trace
This is the first year that we have any records as far as how many joined Ohio FCF Johnny
Appleseed Chapter. Thirty six (36) joined this year at Spring Trace. The Trace was conducted
at Mohican State Park near Wooster, Ohio. One of the major events that took place during
this trace was Commander Jim Barger "Eagle Heart" was elected the Chapter President.
"Eagle Heart" served in this position until 1985.
1977 Ohio Royal Rangers FCF Spring Trace Patch
Another Young Buck that joined this year was Jeff Apke, "Sleeping Bear". His most
memorable moment was his entire initiation from the "kick-a-poo" juice, to when he was
"branded" into the FCF. He also really enjoyed when he got older and became a
Commander and his two sons Aaron and Andrew, entered FCF. Now fellows I know what it
is like having you own son join FCF but a man must really be blessed to have two (2) son's
join FCF. Whoa! "Sleeping Bear" is a Blessed man.
1978 Spring Trace
This year twenty eight (28) Young Bucks and Ole Timers joined the Johnny Appleseed
Chapter.
1978 Ohio Royal Rangers FCF Trace Patch
1979 Spring Trace
This year thirty three (33) men and boys joined the chapter. In 1979 Chuck Hugi "Running Deer" went through the initiation. He shared that at the time he was the Akron Section Commander and some of the Frontiersmen were out to get him. "Running Deer" had to go through each station twice. Two (2) raw eggs, two (2) cups of kick a poo juice. After hearing the story, I've got to thinkin that Ole "Running Deer" was a real lucky varmint back then.
Another Ole Timer to join this year was Gary Bayes "Deer Slayer". He stated that the most memorable moment that night was when "Eagle Heart" had a funeral service for a worm.
1979 Ohio Royal Rangers FCF Spring Trace Patch
1980 Spring Trace
This year forty two (42) folks joined our great chapter. Our present District Royal Rangers Commander, Harry Hunt "Three Feathers" joined during this initiation. He stated that the one memorable 'moment about this trace's initiation was that it last all night long. It never ended. Another Ole Timer that joined this year was Scott Rathfelder "Smiling Fox". His most memorable moment was "we were standing in line when the sun went down and still standing in line when the sun came up the next day and I was still smiling. I do remember pushing a stick up a hill in the leaves and mud. Also the survival event where we had to eat grubs to survive which I think was shrimp, but I thought for sure they were squirming on the log. The kick a poo juice, wow, was that ever something to remember. The initiation was really fun for me and a huge challenge. The night was very beautiful, I remember Pastor Neller from Fostoria doing one of the classes, a great man of God”.
1980 Ohio Royal Rangers FCF Spring Trace Patch
1981 Spring Trace
In 1981 the National Royal Rangers FCF started up four (4) new territories in which the
Johnny Appleseed Chapter became a part of the Voyager Territory. The five (5) chapters
that make up the Voyager Territory still today are Ohio - Johnny Appleseed Chapter,
Michigan Henry Rowe Schoolcraft Chapter, Illinois - Abe Lincoln Chapter, Indiana - Simon
Kenton Chapter and Kentucky - Blue Grass Chapter.
During this year's spring trace the Johnny Appleseed Chapter took in thirty eight (38) new
members.
1981 Ohio Royal Rangers FCF Spring Trace Patch
Another Young Buck who entered FCF during 1981 wrote the following as part of a letter to
George Emerick "Stumbling Bear" on behalf of Noel Mehlo who passed away in 2006. "Noel
meant a lot to me and I know he is with the Lord. When I was initiated into FCF, Noel was
my Sponsor. I was the same age as my oldest son Jay is now. The initiation took place in the
woods next to the A/G campgrounds in Big Prairie. It rained the whole night. We were not
allowed to talk during the whole process. We trudged through the mud and the rain until it
was over. They decided to have mercy on us and let us sleep in the hall. I remember Noel
coming to check on me and to tell me that I did well. That was nearly twenty five (25) years
ago. I really thank God for sending Noel into my life." This Young Buck then, is now
Jonathan Thompson, Missionary to Zimbabwe. Commander's, as I sit here typing this right
now I can't help but think that Noel Mehlo is up in Heaven fellowshipping with the souls that
Missionary Jonathan Thompson has won to the Lord that have went onto Heaven.
1982 Spring Trace
Twenty eight (28) old timers and young bucks became members during spring trace this year.
1982 Ohio Royal Rangers FCF Spring Trace Patch
1983 Spring Trace
This spring trace saw twenty two (22) members join the Johnny Appleseed Chapter. This
was the year that our Voyager Territorial Rep., Mickey Click entered FCF. He shared stories
about jumping over a log with a balloon between his legs, eating an egg raw, and drinking
kick a poo juice. Sounds like he ate pretty well that weekend. Another Ole Timer that joined
during this year was Commander Bill Black "Black Wolf.” Black Wolf remembers there was
one station that as he walked towards it, "I told my patrol that if anybody was going to be
singled out, it would be me". And that is what happened. "As we walked toward the station I
could see the men running it. They were Don Prince, Mike Smiddy, Paul Hickman, Jack
Patchell, and I believe Don Sumner. These were all men from my church and the Cincinnati
Section and I knew there was no way to avoid it. Don Prince was my first commander in
Rangers, but it didn't matter. I was awarded the privilege of wearing a medium size mill
stone around my neck for that entire station". Oh the memories!
1983 Ohio Royal Rangers FCF Spring Trace Patch
This was the year that I came in also. It was a great blessing for me. I remember being placed
by myself after the initiation and council me for the rest of night. What a great time in the
Lord it was. My close friend Skip Henry "Whiskered Owl" had encouraged me and guided
me for over a year to join FCF with neither one of us realizing what an impact it would have
on my life and others. On the Sunday night following my initiation into the Johnny
Appleseed Chapter I was able to share the whole experience with my unsaved father who
passed away later that night of a heart attack. To this day I have the comfort of knowing that
the last word's I shared with my father were about Jesus. Praise God. I later found out
through my mother that my father confided in her how proud he was of me because of my
involvement in the Royal Rangers Ministry. I found this out the night before I earned my
Buckskin in 1984. My physical witness to my father was one reason I chose the FCF name
"Kodiak".
1984 Spring Trace
This year the Johnny Appleseed Chapter inducted twenty three (23) new members into the
chapter. During this trace one of the Ole Timers that joined was Joe Cashman "NightHawk",
our current FCF Chapter President. His favorite memory from that night was after he cooked
his egg the Frontiersman gave him kick a poo juice to drink with it. He felt like the egg
finished cooking in his stomach with that kick a poo juice.
1984 Ohio Royal Rangers FCF Spring Trace Patch
1985 Spring Trace
The chapter inducted forty three (43) members this year. Scott Rathfelder "Smiling Fox" and
Ron Best “Broken Hawk” became the Co-Presidents of the Johnny Appleseed Chapter
during this Trace. Commander Jim Barger "Eagle Heart" resigned as Chapter President at
this Trace. He was appointed by the National Royal Rangers Office to serve as the Voyager
Territorial Representative. "Eagle Heart" felt it would be best for the Chapter if he resigned
so he could put his full attention on the Region. There was a chapter election and Scott
Rathfelder "Smiling Fox" and Ron Best were elected as Co-Presidents.
1985 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
One Ole Timer that joined this year was Pat Fortunate "Care Taker". He chose this FCF name
because he always has felt that he truly has a responsibility that God has placed upon him to
mold and shape young men who HE has placed in his care.
Bill Ringed "Peace Eagle" also joined this year. I can't figure how he came up with a name
like that when every time he see's me he gives me grief. Just joking Bill.
1986 Spring Trace
This year our chapter accepted forty nine (49) new members into membership. Scott Rathfelder “Smiling Fox" who was Co-President with Ron Best stepped down to spend more time with his FCF trade which is Smiling Fox Forge. During 1986 Jim Barger "Eagle Heart" was appointed as the Great Lakes Region Coordinator by the National Royal Rangers Office.
This was also the Ohio Royal Rangers FCF 20
th Anniversary of the Frontiersmen Camping
Fellowship. The patch you see above is a celebration of twenty (20) years that FCF has been active throughout the United States that was designed by the Ohio Royal Rangers. To this date, this is one of the most sought after patches for trading throughout the country with other FCF Members.
Below is the patch that the National Royal Rangers FCF designed to celebrate the 20
th anniversary of FCF.

1986 Spring Trace Cont.
In 1986 a young boy at the age of 12 joined the FCF chapter. Back then at the Phase II or simply the initiation, now called the "Big Adventure," there were different stations that we varmints had to go through and come out with at least 3 beads. "I remember one station was set up with a real deer head and the head/skull was carved out in order to set a bowl. In the dark it looked liked real deer brains in the opened head. At this station the members took us one at a time up to the deer. My friend that I went through with was ahead of me. I remember him coming back just shaking his head saying to himself “I can't believe what I just did," thinking he really ate deer brains. I was next and Commander Harry Hunt "Three Feathers" stuck a big wooden spoon into the deer's head and gave the spoon to me to partake of the brains. I half gagged the stuff down, but I was determined not to lose another bead. The next day after the initiation was over "Eagle Heart" informed us that the brains were really cold oatmeal with food coloring. No wonder "Three Feathers" and the rest of guys at the station were laughing so hard at the look on my face while gulping down that big ball of mush". This young boy received his Buckskin Membership in 1989 and his Wilderness Membership in 1991 at the age of seventeen (17). This young man is Commander Bill Barberee "Renard Blanc - White Fox in French.
Ole "Grey Beard" Jim Hoover joined this year also. He said his favorite memory was the
Kick a Poo juice. Man, that stuff sure has left an impression with a lot of folks over the years
1987 Spring Trace
In 1987 there were sixty six (66) young bucks and ole timers that joined the Johnny Appleseed
Chapter. One of the Young Bucks that entered FCF this year was Brian Thornberg, "Fire Hawk".
His most memorable moment was, he had to choose the good drinking water from the bad
drinking water. Unfortunately "Fire Hawk" chose the wrong water and it was the Kick a Poo
juice. He said the after taste lasted for several hours and burned just as long but the memory has
survived for 2 decades so far. "Fire Hawk" says he still drinks water but now it is always crystal
clear.
1987 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
1988 Spring Trace
Forty Two'(42) candidates were welcomed in the Johnny Appleseed Chapter this year.
1988 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
This year's patch was designed in the shape of a heart because the Ohio District Royal Rangers Commander Joe Jones had open heart surgery before the Trace. Everything went well with the surgery and the patch was how the Chapter showed how much we loved him.
Also this year Rev. Norm Nethers "Big Fox" was appointed as the Voyager Territorial Rep. He served for ten (10) year. As "Big Fox" would like to say he did the Territorial Rendezvous complete tour. Started with Michigan in 89, Indiana in 91, Illinois in 93, Ohio in 95 and finished up Kentucky in 97
1989 Spring Trace
This was a good year for the Johnny Appleseed Chapter. The chapter accepted fifty nine (59)
new members into the chapter. During this year Mickey Click "Longhunter" was appointed
the President of the Johnny Appleseed Chapter. "Longhunter" served in this position for nine
years.
1989 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
1990 Spring Trace
1990 was a huge year at Spring Trace. The Johnny Appleseed Chapter took in seventy two
(72) new members. During this year an Ole Timer that joined was Commander Doug Cooper,
"River Buck". He remembers that during the night it rained five (5) inches soaking us up to
the bone. For some it made it the most miserable night but "River Buck" feels it instilled in
him a sense of perseverance.
1990 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
1991 Spring Trace
The Chapter accepted forty five (45) new members at this Spring Trace.
1991 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
During 1991 the National Royal Rangers FCF designed a special 25th Anniversary Patch to
celebrate the 25th
years of the Frontiersman Camping Fellowship.
National FCF 25th
Anniversary designed by Commander Fred Dever.
1992 Spring Trace
This Spring Trace saw the largest group of candidates to join the Ohio Royal Rangers FCF
Johnny Appleseed Chapter. Ninety three (93) candidates became Frontiersmen.
1992 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
1993 Spring Trace
This year's trace brought in fifty five (55) new members. During this year's trace Commander
Dave Stewart joined the chapter. His FCF name is "Demon Slayer". Cool name for a cool guy.
1993 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
1994 Spring Trace
Seventy six (76) new members joined The Johnny Appleseed Chapter during the 1994 Ohio
FCF Spring Trace. An Ole Timer that joined this year was Rich Rogers "Sparking Hawk".
1994 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
1995 Spring Trace
This was another great year for the Chapter. Ninety two (92) Young Bucks and Ole Timers
became members during the 1995 Spring Trace. Richard Pendleton "Silver Hawk" was one
of the Ole Timers to join the chapter this year. His most memorable moment was the most
brilliant lighting storm and heavy down pour at Yoder's Farm that lasted most of the night.
Another Ole Timer that came in this year was Brian Lamb "Mighty Ram". His most
memorable moment was as he sat around the fIre on Friday night in the pouring rain trying to
put together his choker that had one of the pipe bones that was solid. I had a young buck
whose neck was smaller who at approximately 2:00 a.m. offered me one of his bones that he
was not going to use.
1995 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
In 1995 Ohio FCF Johnny Appleseed Chapter sent five members on the chapter's first ever
Pathfinder Mission's trip. It was a Gold Pathfinder trip to Martines, Mexico. The men that
went were Harry Hunt "Three Feathers", Mike Felkner, Gary Jones, Dennis Holland
"Smiling Cloud", Mickey Click "Longhunter" and Dave HatfIeld "Kodiak". These men
poured a roof on a church by hand and made 16 pews.
1995 Spring Trace Cont.
Also during the year of 1995, the Voyager Territorial Rendezvous was hosted in Ohio at
Camp Cotubic near Bellefontaine, Ohio
1995 Voyager Territorial Rendezvous Patch
1996 Spring Trace
This was another great year for the Johnny Appleseed Chapter. Ninety (90) new members
joined the Chapter. A major change was made prior to the trace by the Ohio District Royal
Rangers. The Chapter name, Johnny Appleseed was changed. It was brought to the attention
of the District Staff that Johnny Appleseed had a few skeletons in his closet, so after meeting
to address the topic the District chose the name Coureur de Bois which means "Messenger of
the Woods".
During this trace the Chapter celebrated the 30th
Anniversary of the Frontiersman Camping
Fellowship. Below is a picture of the 30th Anniversary FCF trace patch

Also during this year a team of eight (8) Frontiersmen went to Poinciana Arriaga, Mexico on a Gold Pathfinder Mission's trip. These members were Joe Cashman "Night Hawk" Sam Garza, Ron Grewell, Juan Rivera, Terry Rudes "Hawk" Mike Felkner, Dennis Holland "Smiling Cloud" and Mickey Click "Longhunter". These men built the church from footer to roof. Concrete block walls, steel trusses, sheet metal roof deck. Poured about 1/3 of the concrete floor. Build 20 pews.
Another joined FCF this year was Eddie Rodriguez. His most favorite moment was after
the closing ceremony as they were packing up their gear in the muddy Yoder’s farm an
Ole Timer that he had never met before came to him told Eddie he had a gift for him. He
handed Eddie a white heavy Frock. He ask Eddie to try it on and then ask if it fit. Eddie
told him yes it does. The Old Timer told him that it was his. Eddie doesn’t remember
who the Old Timer was but will never forget the moment
1997 Spring Trace
The 1997 Ohio FCF Spring Trace fifty six (56) new members joined the chapter. The one change
that was made at this Trace was that the event patch was designed in the shape of the State of
Ohio. This patch has become a popular trading patch with Royal Rangers throughout the world.
1997 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
Another special event that took place was that the Ohio Royal Rangers designed a special set of
event patches that had a special symbol representing "Love Builds" on each patch to celebrate
the opening of the Heartland Conference Retreat Center, which was the Ohio District's new
campground. Below is the special patch for the Coureur de Bois FCF Trace patch.
1997 Ohio Royal Rangers Special "Love Builds" Spring Trace Patch
1997 Spring Trace Cont
During this trace Paul Miller "Broken Arrow" had the honor of joining the Coureur de Bois
Chapter with his son Paul Miller Jr. "Pole Cat". He stated that it was a great blessing coming in
with his son, something that they have shared and achieved together.
During this year the chapter sent seven (7) men on a Gold Pathfinder trip to Las Margiritas,
Mexico. These men built wood trusses with sheet metal deck and built 18 pews and a pulpit. The
men that went were Don DeCoursey "Singin Wolf, Steve Jackson, Dave Moore, Dan Holloway
"Close Shave" Juan Rivera, Mike Felkner, Harold Jefferies, Mike Theeck, Dennis Holland
"Smiling Cloud" and Mickey Click "Longhunter".
Another special memory of one of our members was, after being in FCF only 1 year I worked
really hard to get my outfit together to become a Buckskin member. The only part of my outfit
left to complete by Saturday afternoon was my walking stick. I left the stick up next to an old
abandoned RV I think it was and my fellow FCF brother Michael Johnson burnt it Friday night.
The next day panicked I walked around to find another stick! I saw an old timer was selling
one, really nice hand carved, with a bear head on it! Of course the name I had chosen for myself
was Smiling Bear so it would work. I asked the man how much he wanted for the Staff and he
said $50 bucks. Disappointed I started to walk away he said young man how much money do
you have? I said $15 bucks he said ok give me the $15!!! That man became a great friend of
mine til this very day his name was George Emerick "Stumbling Bear." Gets me teary eyed
remembering this. Because men you never know how tall a man can stand until he stoops to
help a boy. That Staff is still one of my prized possessions!
1998 Spring Trace
Seventy two (72) Young Bucks and Ole Timers joined the Coureur de Bois Chapter in 1998.
This turned out to be the last year that the Spring Trace was held at Yoder's Farm in Big
Prairie, Ohio: During 1998 Mickey Click "Longhunter" was appointed the Voyager
Territorial Rep. He served in this position until 2009. Also during this year Dan Holloway
"Close Shave" was appointed the President of the Coureur de Bois Chapter. He served in this
position for five (5) years.
1998 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
One Ole Timer who joined the FCF Chapter in 1998 was Dave Rose "White Buffalo". He
stated his most memorable moment during his Big Adventurer was "that it rained so much it
looked like an old picture of the gold mine rush with all the muddy roads and we had planks
laid across the road so we could walk from one side to the other. We all had to be tailored
out by 4wd truck and trailer."
This year the chapter sent a mission's team to Palo Solo, Mexico. On this project the team
built wooden trusses with sheet metal decking and built pews. The team consisted of the
following members Norm Nethers "Big Fox" Harold Jefferies, Mark Stewart, Ron
Grewell, Mike Felkner, and Dennis Holland "Smiling Cloud".
1999 Spring Trace
Fifty Four (54) Young Bucks and Ole Timers became members of the Coureur de Bois FCF Chapter. This was a special trace this year because it was the first trace to be conducted at the Heartland Conference Retreat Center. It was a treasured event because everyone realized that the Frontiersmen of the Coureur de Bois Chapter were camping and standing on Holy Ground. What a blessing it was that weekend.
1999 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
This year the chapter sent a mission's team to Miguel Higaldo, Mexico. The team worked with missionaries Dave Cave and Gerald Sanders to build a wood truss/sheet metal roof, and 20 wood pews. They also installed electric lights and outlets in the church and rewired the small old church and the Pastor's little house. They also left enough money in the project account to pour a concrete floor and install new metal doors in the church. Those in attendance were Dennis Holland "Smiling Cloud", Joe Cashman "Night Hawk", Dan Holloway "Close Shave", Rich Rogers "Sparkling Hawk", Jeff Jefferies, Terry Rudes "Hawk", Mike Peters, Doug Cooper "River Buck" and Mickey Click "Longhunter".
2000 Spring Trace
The year 2000 brought a sharp increase in new membership to the Coureur de Bois Chapter. Seventy five (75) candidates became members. Pat Naugle "Horse Trader" joined FCF during this trace. His favorite memory is the watching of the fire all night along with spending time with God during the Big Adventure. Another Ole Timer to join this year was Rev. Roger Mays "Cherokee Songbird". "Cherokee Songbird's" comments were, "The thing I remember most coming in was when I realized what the "initiation vigil" adventure really represented and having successfully completed it. Sometimes we old timers don't handle the physical testing as well, but the adventures are conducted with a great goal and purpose".
2000 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
During 2000 the Coureur de Bois sent a Mission's team to Leona Vicario, Mexico. They again worked with missionaries Dave Cave and Nancy Cave to install a concrete roof on a 44 by 58 foot building. The team placed inverted "T" pre-stressed concrete trusses on 2 foot centers, placed pre-cut Styrofoam inserts, and covered the Styrofoam with reinforcing wire. The roof itself consisted of 2 inches of concrete, mixed and carried up to the roof. The team consisted of Mickey Click "Longhunter" (5
th trip), the organizer and team leader, Dennis Holland "Smiling Cloud" (6
th trip), Jeff Jefferies (3rd trip), Terry Rudes "Hawk" (3rd trip)
and first time team members Paul Miller, Jr. "Pole Cat" and Nevin Zimmerly.
Special mention should be given to Dennis Holland "Smiling Cloud" who attended
every Chapter's Mission's trip from 1995 until 2000. Great job "Smiling Cloud".
2001 Spring Trace
During the Spring Trace in 2001 sixty one (61) new candidates became members in the Coureur de Bois Chapter. An Ole Timer that joined this year was Kelly Barber "Wolverine". He said he “really didn't have any special moment during the Big Adventure this year but his step to Buckskin in 2005 was very memorable”. We'll share this story in 2005.

Another Ole Timer who joined this year was Commander Dave Morrison. He stated that "I was chosen as a missionary for our group and what an awesome experience. I have been to a lot of camps and a number of national training camps - but my entry into FCF is still my favorite campout".
2002 Spring Trace
Eighty One (81) new members joined the Coureur de Bois in 2002. The 2002 Spring Trace was really special to me personally. This was the year that the new Royal Rangers Outpost I belonged to sent 2 candidates to join the Coureur de Bois Chapter. One of these candidates was my son Brandon Hatfield "Fire Eagle". "Fire Eagle" stated that preparing for membership was a real challenge. It all paid off when he arrived at Trace and was assigned to a Patrol. The only way new candidates could pass through to become members was to depend on each other and work together. A challenging night at trace taught "Fire Eagle" the importance of team work. The other candidate from my Outpost was John Devore "Silent Fox". Silent Fox stated that how excited he was when he arrived at the Trace not knowing what to expect, however he was looking forward to the challenge. Being chosen as a "Missionary" for his patrol was an honor because he had to depend on his entire patrol to survive, which they did. "Silent Fox" felt like he learned what it was like to be a Missionary and what it was like for them to depend on the Christians back home. The whole experience was a real excitement from the start. One of the events that occurred during this trace was that the "Kangaroo Court" was brought back in active sessions. At this court a new judge was created by accident. He started off his court with a scripture about submitting to authority then shared his only two (2) rules for his court. Rule 1 was "the Judge is always right". Rule 2 was "If you think the judge is wrong refer back to Rule 1". Of course the Kangaroo Court is always handled tongue-in-cheek type of fun. The judge then held his first case where he brought charges up against his own son for waking him up from a nap. The judge found him guilty and fined him $5.00 and told everyone that if the judge will hang his own son then no one is really safe in his court. The judge .... was "Kodiak" his son was Brandon Hatfield "Fire Eagle".
Norm Weber "Saw Bones" remembers "My favorite FCF memory was the first counsel fire after the Big Adventure. The fire felt warmer as friends became family. This is where the term Disciple became real, not only to the world but to one another. To learn from some and teach to others. But to pray regardless for the Service God has put us in together".

2003 Spring Trace
2003 was another great year for the Coureur de Bois Chapter. Seventy (70) new members
attended the trace and joined the chapter. Before the 2003 trace Joe Cashman "Night Hawk"
was appointed as the new President of the Coureur de Bois Chapter. He still serves in this
position still today.

2004 Spring Trace
During the 2004 Spring Trace fifty (50) new members joined the Coureur de Bois Chapter.
2004 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
During February of 2004 Coureur de Bois teamed up with the Voyager Territory and sent a team of Frontiersmen on a Silver Pathfinder Mission's trip to Costa Rica to Campamento La Cumbre which is Camp Summit in Spanish. This is a 90 acre Royal Rangers campground in Costa Rica founded by Commander Doug Marsh who was appointed National Commander in January 2007 in the United States. The members from the Coureur de Bois Chapter were Dave Rose, "White Buffalo, Pete Angerer, "No Sox" Dan Appenfellder, Paul Miller Sr., "Broken Arrow" John DeVore, "Silent Fox" Brandon Hatfield "Fire Eagle" Dan Holloway, "Close Shave" Don DeCoursey, "Singin Wolf"' and David Hatfield, "Kodiak". "Fire Eagle was one of the first Young Bucks to go on a Pathfinder Mission's trip. Their projects were to make over 800 foot of gutters by shaping, forming, cutting and welding them for the multipurpose building, pour a concrete floor for the Royal Ranger supply store, put a roof on a dorm, wire a dorm, put tile in a dorm plus many more jobs. They worked from 6:00 am in the morning until 6:00 pm at night and later every night. Missionary John Anthony got his money's worth out of this group. Out of all of the excitement on this trip though was that these men got to meet Gilbert Kerby and Bubba from Kentucky. Gilbert and Bubba must have been child hood friends. If you ever see one of these fellows ask them about Gilbert and Bubba.
2005 Spring Trace
This was similar to the previous year where fifty seven (57) new members joined the Coureur de
Bois Chapter. One of the members that joined was Joe Whitmore "Deer Stalker" the Youth
Pastor at Real Life A/G in Batavia, Ohio. "Deer Stalker" also was the guest speaker for the
Saturday night Council Fire. He shared a wonderful message from the Lord that night.
Another Ole Timer who joined this year was Red Jentz "Sunny Skies" He stated that the most
memorable thing from my Big Adventure was having Logan Gerkin come over to my fire in the
middle of the rainy and cold night and thinking here is a 30 year old man. Next morning I was
very surprised to find out he was 18. As I got to know Logan more that day, I became surer of
my commitment to RR and the value that it has in the lives of men and boys.
Another event that took place at this Trace was the Buckskin Ceremony. There was one
Frontiersman who had done everything to earn his Buckskin except for one thing. Here are his
words. "My most memorable moment was when I became a buckskinner. It took me a long time
and when I went to trace I still wasn't sure because I had no sponsor when I got there. But
someone came forward and at spring trace 2005 and I got my Buckskin".
When I read his words he sent me about "Wolverine's" Buckskin Ceremony, I realized who
stood up for him. It was yours truly "Kodiak". I remember him and I getting some moans and
groans when he announced his FCF name. (The chapter being in Ohio and a wolverine being
from Michigan). I'm sure glad I stood up for him.

2006 Spring Trace
During the 2006 Spring Trace sixty (60) new members joined the Coureur de Bois Chapter.
At this trace we had two great testimonies. One was from Josiah Signer who was involved in
a serious auto accident earlier this year. His testimony was that he wanted to recover enough
to come to trace. He sure was used by God to bless us all. The other great testimony was
from a young man named Jacob. Jacob is deaf and he went through the Big Adventure with
his Foster Dad, who signed to Jacob so that he could understand what was happening.

*****Please note that this is the first official record of information about the events that go on during the trace in regards to competition *****
Had some real fun events on Saturday of the Trace. Here is the list of winners:
Archery Bryon Fleck, Young Buck Jeremy Goodwin, Ole Timer
Rifle DJ Rose, “Bright Eyes” Young Buck Dan Davidson, Ole Timer
Flint N Steel Chris Hardulak, Young Buck. Chris Christofis, “Broken Horse”
Knife Throw Chris Christofis, “Broken Horse” Mickey Click, “Longhunter”
Hawk Throw BJ Puga, Young Buck Greg Nowski, Ole Timer
We also had a few Frontiersmen move up to Buckskin. Four of them accepted the
challenge and completed all of the requirements to become Buckskin. Kevin Fleck
“Sun Beam”, Brian Thornberg “Fire Hawk”, Tucker Jones “Tall Knife” and Dalton
Rose “Little Gator”. Great just what we need, another Gator running loose in the
Chapter. Just pullin you leg Little Gator.
2007 Spring Trace
We sure had a great time at the 2007 Ohio Royal Rangers Coureur de Bois FCF Spring
Trace. We had our President, Ole "Nighthawk" back with us this year and as you can
probably guess he brought "the rain with him for Saturday. It was still nice to have him
back.
We had all kinds of new candidates come in and join our chapter this year. We had 45 of 'em.
Whoa! What a gathering. Congrats to them all and we are honored to have you as new
Frontiersmen in the Coureur de Bois Chapter. We also had 142 members attend this year.
That is close to a record.
You know Pilgrim, the ole Kangaroo Court Judge "Kodiak"; he had a hangin on Saturday. Shoot far he even hung one of the new candidates, Rev. Joe Winters. Rev. Joe fell a sleep in "Kodiak's" bunk after lunch. Rev. Joe is "Kodiak's" Pastor. Ain't no one safe in court anymore. "You know how grumpy the judge get's when he doesn't get his afternoon nap. He even fined "Rattle Gator". The court raised $132.00 in fines. Give the judge his nap or we'll all go broke!
We also had a few Frontiersmen move up to Buckskin. Two of 'em accepted the challenge
and completed all of the requirements to become Buckskin. Kris Burgess "Thunderheart"
and Anthony Hembree "Wild Heart". I'd like to also mention that we had two earn their
Buckskin at the fall trace a few months back. Brian Brollier "Bearded Owl" and his son
Matthew Brollier "Little Fox". Congrats to these Buckskin Members for all of their hard
work and hopefully in a few years they'll earn Wilderness.
Guess what folk's? We had a Buckskin member become Wilderness this year at the
Territorial Vigil in Indiana. John Hembree "Many Waters" past his Vigil the week before
trace. Way to go "Many Waters", we're proud of you.
Here's a copy of the Trace patch this year.
Looks purity doesn't it? A special thanks and
a good job to Jerry Yoder for designing this
patch
2007 Spring Trace Cont.
We had a Chapter Scout election and things didn't change much. Congrats to DJ Rose for
earning the privilege of serving as our Scout and to Evan Fortunato for earning the privilege
of serving as Asst Scout. Congrats also to Dalton Rose "Little Gator" and Charles Wilhem
Sky Watcher" for makin it real close in the competition for Scout and Asst. Scout. The four
of them were separated by 12 points. Great job Young Bucks.
There was a Hum Dinger of a council fire service Saturday night. Rev. Roger Larison,
"Stump Preacher" shared a great Word from the Lord to us. The Holy Spirit moved them
Young Bucks and just used them fellow's to bless the socks right off of us Ole Timers. It's
great to see our Young Bucks step up for the Lord like that.
2008 Spring Trace
It was a wet, muddy and soggy time, but what else should we expect when we have our
beloved President “NightHawk” with us... but thankfully God provided for us
We had a very good turnout - 148 members registered with us. We had several who just
wanted to pay their dues, and we had several returning members show up. We had 64
candidates who showed great perseverance and resolve and were welcomed into the
brotherhood.
2008 Ohio Royal Rangers Spring Trace Patch
Also on Sunday morning, we were treated to hear from the candidates who were chosen by
their "patrol" to be a "missionary Our guest speaker for Saturday morning was Bill Barberee.
He inspired us with a great devotional even though we were enduring a mild shower. Our
speaker that evening at Council Fire was Bart Ellis, Missions Pastor from Miamisburg
Assembly. Even though Pastor Ellis was a candidate, he gave a great message and we had
several who came forward for salvation and rededications.
Also on Saturday evening, we introduced 7 members into the rank of Buckskin.
Congratulations are in order for: Sean Murphy “Gracious Warrior”, Raymon Hein “Young
Wolf”, Ben Johnson “Ironman”, Henry Jentz “Bellowing Bear”, Caleb Lopez
“Shaanwanwaki”, Red Jentz “Sunny Skies”, and Randy Fetters “Iron Rail”. At this time, we
also selected Andrew Apke to become the new District Scout and Nathan Fetters as the
Assistant District Scout.
2008 Spring Trace Cont.
On Sunday, our Territorial Representative, “Longhunter” (Mickey Click), informed us that 2
young men had passed their vigil and that congratulations are in order for Tucker Jones and
Anthony Hembree who are the newest members of the Wilderness.". We heard from Ray
Hein, Richard Rodich, Paul Rogers, Bill Hart, Tony Leisure, and Kevin Moore. We were
then treated to the announcement of 2 new staff members. They are John Hembree—Events
Coordinator and Bill Gibson—Company Clerk. Congratulations to both of them! Bill brought
up that a need for a company detail was in order. Look for the form on both the District and
the Chapter websites for more information.
The last order of business that was brought up was the need for grounds improvements. As
those of us who were there know, the north end of the meadow became a true swamp (just for
GATOR). It was so bad that the decision was made to have improvements made. Member
Gary Bayes said that he would donate his time to make the improvements as long as there
was material. President Joe, after informing the assembly of the need, stated that it would
take approximately $1,000.00 to provide the materials. Several members pledged their
monetary support, then the hat was passed and we were able to make a very good start
2009 Spring Trace
Trace was a good time... only problem was we were down on candidate numbers this year....
we only had 34 candidates who braved the trials and were inducted into the fellowship this
year.... though the number was small, they were a good group and will make the entire
membership proud...
And as always, good ole Night Hawk didn't let us down..... It rained most of the day on
Friday (and boy did it rain)..... However, the Lord let His light shine and Saturday and
Sunday were picture perfect....
Our Territorial Representative, Mickey (Longhunter) Click informed us that this year's
Territorial Rendezvous will be his last as rep.... He has turned over the reigns to John
Hembree “Many Waters”....
Our guest speaker this spring was Tom Bender.
Now talk about some preaching.... Tom did an
outstanding job...
Most notable this spring was the patch.... for those
of you who collect patches, if you weren't at trace,
you will want to get with me at Pow-Wow (I still
have a few left that are for sale)..... The patch was
made in commemorative to George Emerick “Ol
Stumblin Bear” himself. Rumor has it he has
broken every Chapter President that we have had.
Maybe that is broken in every President....

2010 Spring Trace
This year’s Spring Trace saw 40 new members join the Coureur de Bois Chapter.
Also with this year’s Spring Trace started a new tradition where a past President of the Chapter
would be recognized. We started with our first President Ray Lambert “Winter Hawk”.
Winter Hawk served from 1968 -1977. Ray passed a few years back and is missed very much.
If God had not given Ray the burden to minister to boys the Coureur de Bois Chapter would not
be what it is today. I have no doubt in my mind that Winter Hawk has a special place in Heaven
today.
Also at this trace Henry Jentz “Bellowing Bear” was elected Chapter Scout. Zack Fortunato was
elected Asst. Scout.
This year at Fall Trace we recognized Jim Barger “Eagle Heart” who served as President of the
Coureur de Bois Chapter from 1978 – 1985.

2012 Ohio FCF Fall Trace Patch
Coureur de Bois Chapter
Since 1968 at least one thousand eight hundred and seventeen (1887) Young Bucks and Ole
Timers have joined the Ohio Royal Rangers Frontiersman Camping Fellowship (FCF). That is a
lot men and older boys who have felt the call from God to advance their involvement into the
Royal Rangers Ministry. I believe that FCF has always been a tool that God gave the
Commanders of Royal Rangers to keep the older boys attention when Satan is using everything
else to take them away from us. I have personally seen it in the two (2) outposts that I've had the
privilege to belong to. Frontiersmen, FCF can and will change an older boy's life so that he can
defeat Satan with God's help. Think of how many Frontiersmen have joined FCF as a boy and
stayed involved as a Commander because of the FCF Ministry and the added adventure FCF
gives the boy. Only God really knows.
In closing, it is my prayer that all Frontiersmen will remember that FCF is for the older boys to
come to so that maybe they can touch the hem of the garment of Jesus. If we Ole Timers will
continue to bring older boys to become Young Bucks then we can say that we have done our
best to "Reach, Teach and Keep Boys for Christ.
Friend's, we have created a History of the Coureur de Bois FCF Chapter that we must
continue to pass on to our Young Bucks. Good Job My Friend's.
May we all earn Wilderness!

I’ve shared with you the warmth and glow of these many a camp fire. I truly hope that you have
enjoyed reading them as much as I have enjoyed collecting them. Each year there will updates
to add to these stories so that you can remember how great the Coureur de Bois Chapter of the
Frontiersman Camping Fellowship is. I want to encourage you to remember that the only way to
do this is to become an Ole Timer so that you can bring Young Bucks into the Chapter and keep
it growing forward. This way there will always be a History of the Coureur de Bois Chapter.
Remember, “May We All Earn Wilderness”
