SucceSS in SucceSSionthe Bobcats advanced to the postseason for a third year in a row, and fourth time in five years, making it to the Sweet 16 last season. Ohio’s two postseason wins last year increase its total to 13, adding to its lead over all other mac schools.

The Green and White won 48 games during the past two seasons (2010-11, 2011-12), its most since the 1993-94 and 1994-95 campaigns. Also, the 70 wins over the last three years are the most in program history. The Bobcats also achieved their first winning record in true road games over consecutive seasons since the mid-1980’s.

BoBcatS in the PollSOhio finished No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll; marking the first time the Bobcats have been ranked to end a season. the last mid-american conference team to be ranked in either poll was Kent State during the 2008 season. That squad was coached by new Ohio Head Coach Jim christian.

The Bobcats have been ranked during four separate seasons, the last occurring in 1994-95 when the team reached No. 14 in the nation. That year, Ohio won the Preseason NIT with wins at Ohio State and No. 14 Virginia before toppling George Washington and New Mexico State at Madison Square Garden.

the highest ranking ever for an ohio team took place during the 1969-70 season when it reached no. 5 in the land. That squad is most well-known for opening the season with wins over four Big Ten foes (Northwestern, No. 13 Purdue, No. 16 Ohio State and Indiana).

The Bobcats would finish 20-5, losing only one MAC game en route to the NCAA Tournament where it fell to No. 15 Notre Dame in the Mideast Regional.

how DoeS 5 Become 1?no player in the history of college basketball has ever recorded 2,000 points, 900 assists, 650 rebounds and 300 steals for a career. One current Bobcat has a chance to accomplish this feat.

In the history of college basketball, only 12 players have ever recorded 900 assists. That list is headed by names like Bobby Hurley, Chris Corchiani and Ed Cota, while also featuring Keith Jennings, Steve Blake, Tony Miller, Aaron Miles, Greg Anthony, Doug Gottlieb and Orlando Smart. Currently, Cooper has 743 assists and is just 157 assists shy of 900.

BOBCATS IN THE MAC Payton. Of those two, only Payton had more than 300 steals. However, no one has ever reached 650 rebounds, until possibly this season.

To reach 2,000 points, 900 assists, 650 rebounds and 300 steals… D.J. cooper would need to average in 35 games 11.6 ppg, 5.9 apg, 3.9 rpg, 1.2 spg.

Cooper has averaged at least 13.5 ppg for all three seasons and averaged 5.0 and 5.4 rpg during his freshman and sophomore seasons. His lowest spg total was 2.3 during his sophomore year, but during that time, he also averaged 7.5 apg. It stands to reason, that cooper has a legitimate shot at putting up career numbers no one has ever seen before.

cooPer’S career marKScooper broke ohio’s all-time assists mark against Kent State last season, a record that had stood since 1990 (Dennis whitaker, 651). The senior also owns Ohio’s top two single season marks (263 in 10-11, 218 in 2009-10) and led the league in helpers during his freshman and sophomore seasons. Last year he ranked second in the league with an average of 5.7 per game (Jarod Oldham, UB, 5.9). With his sixth helper in the game at UMass on Dec. 19, Cooper became the all-time MAC assists leader, and now has 787 for his career.

his 279 steals currently have him ranked for first all-time as he passed Sonny Troutman (259). Cooper also owns the single-season mark in that category (93 in 2009-10) and finished 16th nationally last season with an average of 2.31 steals per game. He needs 66 steals to become the MAC’s all-time leader in this category as well.

Cooper is also one of 33 1,000-point scorers in Ohio history. he now is fifth all-time with 1,767 career points. He currently stands among the top five scorers all-time in MAC history but will need a gargantuan effort to eclipse all-time leading scorer Bonzi Wells (Ball State, ‘98 - 2,485).

nOthinG like PlayinG at hOmeThrough nine home games this season, Ohio has averaged 5,903 fans per game, which is No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference by a significant margin. Toledo ranks second in the league, averaging 3,689 fans per game.

cOmfy cOnvO cOnfinesThe Convocation Center opened with the beginning of the 1968-69 season and has been home to the Bobcats ever since. Over that time frame, the Bobcats have amassed a record of 441-136 (.764). last season, ohio had is best record at home in the history of the program, going 16-1.

Thorns, also appeared on the watch list for the Bob Cousy Award presented to the nation’s top point guard and was named to the All-District 17 Second Team by the NABC. Thorns led TCU this season in scoring (13.5 ppg), assists (4.66 apg) and 3-pointers (72). He also produced one of the top seasons ever for a TCU point guard in 2010-11, as he finished as the only individual ranked among the nation’s top-12 players in both assists per game (No. 4) and assist-turnover ratio (No. 12).

Christian came to TCU after serving as the head men’s basketball coach at Kent State for six seasons where he won at least 20 games in each campaign. In his six seasons as head coach of the Golden Flashes, Christian climbed to second place on the all-time career victories list, only 10 triumphs shy of the record.

Under the guidance and leadership of Christian, the Golden Flashes garnered five postseason appearances in six campaigns, including a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2008. Not only was the former Kent State head coach selected as the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in two of his final three seasons, but Christian also led his team to its first-ever top-25 ranking after peaking at 23rd in the nation in the Associated Press poll and 24th in the ESPN/USA Today poll.

The 2007-08 campaign presented itself with one of the greatest seasons in the history of Kent State men’s basketball. The Golden Flashes finished witha 28-7 overall record, including a school-record 25 regular-season triumphs, en route to securing their second Mid-American Conference regular-season andtournament crowns. For the second time in the three seasons, Christian guided the Golden Flashes to a berth in the NCAA Tournament where Kent State recorded a ninth-seed, which was the highest seed in program history.

Christian’s time as Kent State head coach was highlighted by numerous individual standouts, including two honorable-mention All-Americans (Antonio Gates, DeAndre Haynes), two MAC Players of the Year (DeAndre Haynes, Al Fisher), three MAC Defensive Players of the Year (Demetric Shaw, John Edwards, Haminn Quaintance), one MAC Sixth Man of the Year (Kevin Warzynski) and a total of 19 All-MAC selections, including six first teamers.

Christian spent three seasons at Big East member Pittsburgh, where he served as an assistant coach under his former high school coach Ralph Willard. During his time, Christian aided the development of Vonteego Cummings, who was a two-time All-Big East Conference award winner and former NBA talent forthe Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors.

Christian served as an assistant coach at Miami (OH) under current Arizona State head men’s basketball coach Herb Sendek during the 1995-96 campaign. The coaching staff put together by Sendek that season served as an all-star cast almost a decade later with three current NCAA Division I head coaches com-ing from that program in Christian, Sean Miller (Arizona) and Charlie Coles (Miami, OH). In his single season, the RedHawks recorded a 21-8 overall record, including a 12-6 mark in conference action. The RedHawks earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament during the 1995-96 season.

Christian notched a pair of stops in Bowling Green, Ky., as a member of the Western Kentucky men’s basketball program. Christian got his first taste of col-legiate coaching under Willard as a part-time assistant coach for two campaigns. In his first two seasons, Western Kentucky notched a 35-25 record, including a 21-11 overall record during the 1991-92 campaign.

Christian returned to the Hilltoppers for the 1994-95 campaign where he helped Western Kentucky post a 27-4 overall record, including a 17-1 record in Sun Belt Conference action. That season, Western Kentucky recorded the fourth-most victories in program history to go along with crowns in both the regular-season and tournament championships en route to securing a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Christian’s first full-time assistant coaching position came at St. Francis (Pa.) - a member of the Northeast Conference - under Tom McConnell. In his two seasons with the Red Flashes, Christian guided the development of two-time All-Northeast Conference performer Deon George and Jason Roberts.

A native of Bethpage, N.Y., Christian was an all-state guard at St. Dominic High School while playing under Willard. Following his prep career, Christian wasrecruited by Rick Pitino at Boston University where he played two seasons before transferring to Rhode Island. Christian played his final two campaigns under Tom Penders at the University of Rhode Island where he helped the Rams reach the Sweet Sixteen of the 1988 NCAA Tournament. The former standout guard guided the Rams to victories over Missouri and Syracuse before dropping a 73-72 decision to Duke for the right to advance to the Elite Eight.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in consumer affairs from the University of Rhode Island in 1988, Christian spent one season playing professionally inAustralia for the Sydney City Comets. Christian and his wife, Patty, were married in the summer of 2005, and have three children, MacKenzie, Zach and Jay.
