PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Av-Elul 5772 August 2012

Summer provides a wonderful break from the routine of the year, and I always look forward to it with great anticipation. As August approaches, however, I am always eager to get back to more normal activities. Of course, for me, much of this involves the return of students and beginning of classes at UK (and, unfortunately, the resumption of meetings). In terms of my Jewish life, and OZS, the end of the summer break is something I really look forward to. It will be wonderful to have Rabbi Smolkin back on the bima after his well-deserved vacation. We are fortunate at OZS that we are able to manage when our rabbi is not around, but he brings a life and spirit to services that is hard to match, and things just aren’t the same without him. Before long, the religious school students will be back, with all the hustle and bustle that brings to OZS on Sundays and during the week. It is especially good to see the children begin to reappear (although I always wish for more of them) at Shabbat services. After a break during July, the OZS Board will begin meeting again in August, and this year, as I have written earlier, I hope we will be able to work with the congregation as a whole, in the wake of our wonderful Centennial celebrations, to look ahead to our second century. We will consider together how to make OZS thrive in an ever-changing world, and how we can best serve our growing membership. With the passing of Tisha b’Av, the spiritual mood takes a definite positive turn. We now look forward with anticipation to some of the best parts of the Jewish year, the celebrations for the High Holy Days followed by Sukkot. These are, of course, busy times for our congregation, but wonderful occasions for fellowship, joy, and celebration. So, although the calendar says that we still have nearly two months left of summer (and I’m afraid the summer heat will be around for a while), in a practical sense, a new season begins this month, and I am excited to get things underway. - - - Jon Glixon President

Mitzvah Project

To raise money for the Burn Unit at Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio

I would like to help the Shriners make the children in the Burn Unit as comfortable as they can while being in a very scary situation. In addition to monetary donations, art supplies are needed for the recreational rooms. A box will be placed in the synagogue’s lobby for these supplies. The following webpage has been created on the Shriners Hospital website to accept donations:
