My Dear Friends,

I still remember some of the songs we used to sing in

the church of my childhood—songs I don’t hear much

anymore but songs that were spiritually formative for

me. “Am I a Soldier of the Cross?” is one of those

songs. It goes on to say,

Sure, I must fight, if I would reign; Increase my courage, Lord;

I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain, Supported by thy word.

As a child, I’d sing that with chills running up and down my spine.

Another one of those oldies but goodies is “Work for the Night is Coming.” It

closes with the words that have haunted me all my life:

When man’s work is o’er.

Those words put in my mind the thought that we aren’t placed here forever.

What we have to do, we’d better be doing—for no one can turn back time.

I’ve drawn some solace and comfort knowing that Jesus felt this way also.

One time He said,

“I must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day; the night is

coming when no one can work.” (John 9:4)

Jesus, even more than us, must have felt the pressure of time running out.

For me, it doesn’t get easier as I get older. In fact, the added years intensify in

me the need to get as much done as possible with the time that remains.

And frankly, I don’t like the direction the world is headed either. I guess if it

were just about me, I’d not think so much about it. But, I do think about it

because I wonder what kind of world my grandchildren will live in and have

children of their own—that is if Jesus doesn’t come back first!

These two factors—so little time and so much that needs to be done—make

me want to focus more than ever on the things that really matter. There are

all kinds of things that we can do, but what do we really need to be doing? I

feel the time running out on my pastoral life, but with parents and their

siblings living up into their 90s—I could have another 30 years. I don’t want

to play shuffleboard for the rest of my life.

What is it that God wants to bless? That’s what I want to be about! Don’t

you? I am actively praying for God to reveal the next chapter in my life. There

is another song that I had completely forgotten that my African friends

reintroduced to me. How I loved singing it with them.

I’ll be somewhere working;

I’ll be somewhere working;

I’ll be somewhere working for my Lord!

Yes, I will! I can’t wait to worship with you on Sundays!

Thank You We would like to thank our Mt Auburn family for the cards, prayers and visits

after the passing of Rob’s mother, Dica. Mt. Auburn is truly a compassionate

and caring congregation and provided so much comfort to us!

— Rob and Danita Forgey

As we celebrated our daughter Gabrielle's baptism this past weekend, we

wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you to the wonderful congre-

gation and staff of Mt. Auburn for all of the love and support you gave our

family throughout our adoption journey. The church has been so generous

in so many ways-allowing us to hold fundraisers here, praying for us and for

Gabby as we waited, and welcoming our new addition with open arms and

excitement when she finally came home! We are so blessed to be members

here, and to have such a loving church family surrounding us. Thank you!

—Chad, Jana, Griffin, Cooper, and Gabby Hennessy

Church Family, Thank you all so much for the constant support you show

me. From all of the thoughtful concerns and prayers to generous financial

contributions, I am beyond grateful. In this past month, you have provided

over 64% of my financial needs for Cambodia, and I am happy to share that

after all of the mail I received, along with both weekends of taking up an

offering, I have just surpassed my goal of $5,000. Thank you all so much for

showing me that it is possible, with God's provision through your support, to

raise all of my needs in under one month. I am so blessed and I cannot wait

to share with you about how He moves in my life this summer. I love you all!

Cost Estimates Being Gathered

for Children’s Ministry Area Renovation

With a final “tweak”, the plans to renovate the Children’s Ministry Area are

now in the hands of contractors for them to give us estimated costs for this

project. No addition to the building is planned, but the area on the east side

of the former Fellowship Hall would be refurbished and two new classrooms

added. If this project is undertaken, it will be done so with money on hand

and will not include any new borrowing of money. Keep watching for more

details.

VBS 2012: Daily Donations If you have joined us before for VBS, then you are probably aware that

we ask the children to donate something each day throughout the

week. We collect a different item and challenge the children to a daily

goal. These goals, if met, result in some sort of competition and mayhem

on Friday involving myself, VBS coordinators, Pastor Ben and the Day-

care staff. Needless to say, the children love it!

This year we will collect food for families here in Johnson County. Dona-

tions will go toward the Food Pantry here at Mt. Auburn and any extra

items will go to the Lord's Locker in Trafalgar. Below you will find a list of

requested items.

The question has come up, “Why take an offering

in JAM?” The reason is really quite straight for-

ward. Our purpose in JAM is to teach children how

to worship. Offering is a critical element of wor-

ship. When the prophet Isaiah found himself in the

presence of God (in Isaiah 6) his response was “Here I am, send me.” Our re-

sponse to worshipping God is to offer ourselves for His direction. Offering

money is symbolic of offering ourselves because it represents something of

what we have earned by His grace.

In JAM, we generally explain the offering in terms of the worship theme of

the week. For example, on Mother’s Day we dealt with a scripture that spoke

of Jesus’ ancestors (family). So the offering was framed as a way in which we

help the family of faith and invite others into the family of Jesus. The follow-

ing Sunday’s theme dealt with keeping our eyes focused on Jesus remem-

bering from the scripture from Matthew 14 of Peter walking on water. The

offering was framed around helping others to see Jesus more clearly, love

Jesus more dearly, and follow Jesus more nearly.

In worship, the offering is the occasion of commitment that says, “Yes, Lord I

have heard Your voice and I want to be part of what you are doing in the

world.”

Have you had the appropriate legal documents prepared so your family will

know what your wishes are? In case of an emergency, will they know what

to do? Jon E. Williams, Certified Elder Law Attorney, will address these and

other questions at the Health Ministries’ next session on June 3 at 1:30 p.m.

Listed are some of the topics that are of interest to all of us:

• Wills, Revocable and irrevocable living and testamentary trusts

• Endowments

• Durable powers of attorney

• Appointments of healthcare representatives

• Living wills and special needs trusts

• The right nursing home/assisted living facility for you or your family member

Summer Clothes Needed for Homeless Tuxedo Park Baptist Church has asked Mt. Auburn to collect summer clothes

for the homeless. Please bring in children, youth and adult summer clothes

beginning next week through June 3. A collection box is located in the hall

leading to the youth rooms.

No More Blue Jeans For Shalom Circle We just want to say THANK YOU so much to all of you who have been such

wonderful, willing participants to provide blue jeans throughout these many

years. Shalom Circle has been making camp bags for the campers at

Fletcher Place for a very long time, but that ministry is no longer needed.

(Yes, they still have summer day campers; but they just don’t need the same

contributions any longer.)

Shalom Circle is shifting our Fletcher Place mission to supplying bags for the

homeless. We will be providing hotel-size toiletries, toothbrushes and

toothpaste, and a hand towel & washcloth.

Again, we want to thank all of you who kept us supplied in blue jeans all

these years. And we also give special thanks to Edna Francis who turned

these old blue jeans into camp bags.

Turning Point Cell Phone Update To date we have collected 22 old cell phones that were taken to Turning

Point on Monday, May 14. Donations will continue to be accepted. Please

note, that chargers are not needed. You may remove the SIM cards before

donating, but if you don’t, the phones are taken to a group that refurbishes

them and cleans out any remaining information. Once they are given to a

victim, the only thing they are able to do with the phone is call 911. If you

would like a 'receipt' for your donation, please contact Marlene Withrow and

she will obtain one from Turning Point. Thanks for your continuing support

on this. — Marlene Withrow

Volunteer Opportunities Volunteer opportunities are continually available at The Franklin United

Methodist Community for groups or individuals. You can help with various

group activities (Bingo, parties, musical events) or by visiting residents 1:1

(Going for walks or giving rides in wheelchairs, reading, playing games).

Other opportunities are also available including playing music and helping

in our General Store or at our concierge desk. Our residents will truly enjoy

and appreciate your volunteer assistance and you will have the opportunity

to experience the great joy that comes from giving of yourself. If interested

please call Jack Cronin, Director of Activities at 736-1167. Thank you.

Girl Scout Troop 1554 recently purchased and planted

the geraniums on the eastside by door #9. They will con-

tinue to water, deadhead and fertilize them over the

summer. We thank them! Here’s a note from the Troop.

Thanks to Mt. Auburn and all their service to Girl Scouts (and others!) and for all you allow us to do there on your property—from service unit meetings to holding large events. Mt. Auburn has always been very generous to the scouts in the area and we appreciate it so much. — Elizabeth & Troop 1554: Carinne, Emma, Kara, Emily, Jessica, Ivy,

Laura, Morgan and Jillyan

Dear Parents,

We want to inform you of a great educational

experience for you and your 3rd-5th grade child.

During the month of July during our Sunday

school hour, we will be working on a 4-week unit

that will cover the issues of poverty and modern-day slavery amongst chil-

dren in the world and how we are called to have compassion on others.

Although these topics may seem to be heavy for children, we believe it is

important for children to be aware that there are people around the world

who live in suffering and that we, as Christians, are called to help. It is our

hope that if the children of this generation grow up caring about what is

happening not only inside, but outside their immediate sphere of influence,

then we will see a generation filled with compassion for the lost and hurting

people in this world. As believers in the healing gospel of Jesus Christ, we

ought to be modeling this compassion and concern so that our children will

imitate Christ. This is why we encourage you to participate in all of the

learning activities along with your child.

Thank you for your participation in this ministry learning experience.

In Christ, Doris Waters

Dr. Hertel will follow Pentecost Sunday, May 27,

with two additional messages on the Holy Spirit.

June 3rd is Trinity Sunday. The message for this Sunday is –

“The God We Hardly Know” taken from John 16:4b-15

June 10th will be the final message in this series on the Holy Spirit–

“How to be Filled with the Spirit” from Ephesians 5:18

June 17th is Father’s Day and Pastor Ben Greenbaum will preach a message

titled “Bound by Love.”

June 24th will feature two entirely different worship experiences.

9:00 Our traditional service will welcome as guest speaker, Mrs.

Amy McCabe. Amy has been attending Mt. Auburn with

her family since the beginning of the year. She is a

seminary student studying for the ministry. It will be a joy

to hear Amy in this service.

10:30 The contemporary service we will be the final celebration

of our children for the 2012 Vacation Bible School.

New Veterans Memorial Planned The Veterans Memorial will be a monument placed at Freedom Park in

Greenwood and will be the first memorial/monument to recognize those

individuals who have served in the Military, Police, and Fire Department. The

initial ground breaking was performed on May 19, which also kicked off the

fund raising for the memorial. Over $100,000 dollars of "in-kind" donations

have been received from several companies in both Indianapolis and Green-

wood, but approximately $100,000 of cash contributions are needed to start

the construction with a total of about $500,000 to complete the memorial.

Pastor Jim has allowed me to address this to the congregation on June 3 at

both services. I will also have an informational table to allow anyone who

has questions or would like to contribute. Johnson County has the highest

percentage of military veterans in Indiana and we feel this Memorial would

be a great service to them. Please help us if you can.

NEXT NEWSLETTER

The next newsletter is scheduled for June 27. All items to be included in the newsletter should be sent to Amy Shockley by Monday, June 25.

Another school year has quickly gone by!

As you know, when a student is finished

with a particular grade in school, they are

ready to quickly be promoted to the next

level. As soon as a first grader steps off the bus on

that last day of school, they are a second grader! It was in this spirit

that the Sunday School teachers and I decided awhile back to try promotion

Sunday for classes at the beginning of the summer as opposed to the end.

After all, we have always sorted the VBS classes according to the grade that

the child is entering into in the upcoming school year.

We will be promoting children on Sunday, June 3, in all children’s

programs. On that Sunday, you may check your child into the grade level

they will be in for the 2012-13 school year. The children who are not

currently scheduled to attend school will stay in the same age group until

their birthday. This would include the nursery and toddler set. Sunday

School teacher dedication and third grade Bible presentation will still take

place in September. If your third grader needs a Bible for the summer, please

let me know.

I will be updating all information on children for my files and class lists.

Please fill out an information form on your child(ren). You may pick these up

from your Sunday school teachers, Cornerstone teachers, or my office.

Please return them as soon as possible. New attendance sheets will be

available as well, and I will try to update them quickly and accurately. Please

inform me of any changes that may need to be made to lists as I do them.

With a little patience and cooperation, we can have updated records and

information for all of our students.

I look forward to a summer with you and your children. Thank you in

advance for your cooperation.

In Christ,

Nancy Van Dyke, Director of Children’s Ministry

Can You Help? Can You Help? Can You Help? Can You Help? Dr. John Komary, who lives in our community in Golden Grove, is looking for

a person that can host an adult Chinese female and provide a place to stay

for about 2 months this summer. This woman is willing to pay for the privi-

lege of living in your home. We have a person, Jessica Chung, who can tutor

her in English, but she needs a place to stay. Can you help? If so, call either

Jim or Marsha at the church (535-8555).

Summer Special Music: The weather is warm, the sun is shining, the birds are

singing – I’m sure that these details bring one particular

thought to the minds of at least some of us: summer

special music. Or maybe not, but it’s now high time that

our Mt. Auburn musicians make plans to add voices and

instruments to our summer worship. Please let us know soon that you

would like to participate by signing up on the choir room bulletin board or

contacting John or me.

You Too Can Enjoy Financial Freedom! The following story is not for the faint of heart. It is a story of bondage; and of

freedom. It is a story of despair; and of hope.

The story began with the first car loan, acquired 15 years ago, and the student

loans for college. It continues with more car loans, credit cards the family “just

had to have for emergencies” that became, “we can make the payments!” Always

asking, “How much down? How much a month.” Instead of asking simply, “How

much.” This family wandered into $160,891 of debt, not counting their house! We

played the “credit card shell game” for a while and transferred balances from one card to another and looked for new, low rates. We locked in a few rates and called

ourselves smart; but the debt remained.

On a warm, sunny day in June, 2008, we decided that we had had enough. We

were sick of making good money, but always being broke. We were sick of the

mental gymnastics that were required to keep shuffling the debt. We were sick of

random fees charged by banks and credit cards just to see if we were paying at-tention. That June, we decided to take action. We set our sights on the card with

the lowest balance; a Visa card with $3,072 on it and pulled the trigger. By Sep-

tember it was gone. We took aim next at one of our vehicles.

In January 2009, both of us had stumbled across the same book on the same day;

one from the local library, the other an audio download. We began to read/listen

to the book on the same day and began discussing it when we were just halfway

through, shocked that the other had been reading/listening to the book at the same time. The book: Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover. All of the infor-

mation in the book was common sense. None of it was new. However, it was pre-

sented in such a way that it motivated us to step up to the next level. We followed

the book for about a year and then decided to take the full plunge and attend

“Financial Peace University.” Convinced that “Dave” wasn’t going to teach me

anything I didn’t already know, I was shocked to find out how off base I really was!

We are now 48 months into our “Total Money Makeover.” We are budgeting every

month before the month begins. In the past, we never really talked about money.

We didn’t fight, but we didn’t talk either. Now we are talking about money and

planning the month ahead because WE are now in control. In the past 48 months,

we have paid off $141,601. At the rate we are going, we expect to be debt free

(not counting the house) before the end of this year!

In a country of 609.8 million credit cards, and 3.5 cards per cardholder, and a

credit card revolving debt of $852.6 billion, we are a family striving for total

weirdness! Less than 25% of the American population does not have a credit card,

and we intend to join them. The average FICO score in America is 769, and yet our

goal is FICO = ZERO. The bottom line is, who gets the money? Our family or the

bank? Embrace weirdness! Live for your family and your future! Sign up to attend Financial Peace University at Mt. Auburn NOW!
