Cooking Tips•Starttheself-cleaningcycleofyourovenwhileitisstillwarmfrom

prior cooking.•Donotpreheatovenexceptwhenrequired.Ifyoumustpreheat,most

ovens will preheat in 10 minutes or less.•Don’tpeek!Eachtimeyouopentheovendoor,thetemperaturedrops

25 to 50 degrees. Avoid lifting pot lids for the same reason.•Turnofftheovenorrangeafewminutesbeforecookingtimehas

elapsed. It will still retain enough heat to finish the cooking.•Oncewaterreachesastateofboiling,itdoesn’tgetanyhotter.Turn

down the burner and maintain a boiling temperature.•Acleanovenorrangecooksmoreefficiently.Keepdrip-panandoven

Water Heating Tips•Afaucetthatleaksonedrippersecondcanwaste400gallonsofwater

in a year.•Replacingoldershowerheadswithlowflowunitscouldsaveafamily

of four as much as 15,000 gallons of water per year, reducing water heating costs.

•Lowerthetemperatureofyourwaterheater.A10-degreereductionintemperature saves about 13% of your water heating costs.

•Awaterheatertemperaturesettingof120degreesisfine,unlessyourdishwasher doesn’t have a booster heater.

•Placeyouhandsonyourwaterheatertank,ifitfeelswarmthenyouneed an insulation blanket.

Laundry Tips•Mostpeopleintheapplianceindustryagreethatcoldwaterwashesjust

as effectively as warm water.•Soakcyclescanallowforshorterwashtimes.Forheavilysoiledclothes,

instead of a heavy wash cycle, try soaking and then using a shorter wash cycle.

•Smallersizedloadsrequirelesswater.Yourclotheswasherusesjustabout the same amount of energy regardless of how much clothing is being washed.

•Bycombiningloadstogether,youreducethenumberofloadsyouwashwhich in turn reduces your energy use.

• Ifyouarethinkingofreplacingyourwashingmachine,considerahorizontalaxis,orfront-loadingunit.Recentresearchhasshownthatthese machines can reduce energy use by more than 50%.

•Yourdryerismostefficientwhenfullyloaded.Combinesmallerloads of wash into one dryer load, but be careful not to overload. Overloading makesthedryerworkharderandmaycauseexcessivelintandwrinkling.

•Cleanthelintfilteraftereveryload.Lintonthefilterreducesairflowandmakes the dryer work harder.

•Dryloadsconsecutivelytotakeadvantageofheatbuild-upinyourdryer.•Removingclothesassoonasthecycleiscompletenotonlysavesenergy

but also prevents wrinkling.

Dishwasher Tips•Yourdishwasherusesthesameamountofwaterregardlessofhow

many dishes are washed. Wash full loads whenever possible.•Airdrydishesinsteadofusingyourdishwasher’sdryingheater.•Usealighterwashcycleforlightlysoileddishes.

Lighting Tips•Turnofflights.Trymotionsensorsthatturnlightsoffautomaticallywhen

everyone leaves a room.•Timersthatautomaticallyturnlightsonandoffcanreduceyourenergy

use and increase safety by making a house seem occupied even when people are away.

•Keepfixturesandbulbsclean.Dirt,alongwithbeingunsightly,canabsorb as much as 50% of the light.

•Themoneyyouspendonlightbulbsisprobablyonly5%to10%ofthetotal cost. The other 90% to 95% is the cost of electricity to run those bulbs.Lookformoreefficientratherthancheaperlightbulbsandconsidercompactfluorescentlights.

•Useonebulbinsteadofmultiplebulbswheneverpossible.Asingle 100-watt incandescent bulb produces the same amount of light as two 60-watt bulbs and it uses 20% less energy.

•Translucentlampshadesprovidemorelighttoaroomthansolid colored shades.

•Usedimmersorthree-wayincandescentbulbstocontroltheamountoflightthatyouneedinaroom.Dimmingthelightstohalftheilluminationcuts energy consumption almost in half.

Heating and Cooling Tips•Eachdegreeathermostatisraisedcansaveuptothreetofourpercent

on the cost of operating an air conditioner. Thermostats should be set at the highest comfortable temperature – 76 degrees or higher – and kept there.

•Cleanorchangeairconditionerfiltersmonthly.Theflowofairisthe key to cooling, so don’t make your system work harder than it has to. Makesureairventsareclearoffurnitureorotherobjects.

•Duringsummer,cookmealsanddryclothesduringthecoolertimesofthe day.

•Amicrowaveovencooksupto75%fasterandsavesupto70percent of the energy used by a conventional oven.

•Don’tletheatgoupthechimney.Makesurethefireplaceflueisclosedwhen you are not using it.

•Usefanstokeepairmoving.Aceilingfanusesaboutasmuchelectricityas a light bulb – far less than an air conditioner.

• Ifyourheatingsystemhasapilotlight,turnitoffduringthesummer. A pilot light typically costs $3 to $5 per month to keep lit, so why not turn it off when you aren’t using it.

•Haveyourheatingand/orcoolingsystemtunedandinspectedbyaserviceprofessional.Lossesfromapoorlymaintainedsystemaccumulateover time – sometimes at a rate of 1% to 2%, each year.

•Sealingairductleaksintheatticcanreduceheatingcostsbyupto 20% with reductions of 10% common!

•Aprogrammablethermostatletsyoueasilylowerthethermostat during periods when no one is home, as well as lower the temperature overnightwithouthavingtofreezeinthemorningwhilewaitingfortheheat to rise. You might save as much as 20% on your heating costs and recover your investment in the first year.

•Replacesingle-panewindowswithenergy-efficient,high-performancelow-E windows. In colder climates, the heating savings can be considerable.

•Caulkwindowsanddoorstopreventdrafts.•Abreezeonasummerdaycanbeenoughtokeepyoucool.Insteadof

turning the air conditioner on, open doors and windows on opposite sides of the house for cross ventilation.

•Plantshadetreestoblocktheheatfromthesun.Asthetreesgrow, they can dramatically cut your cooling bills.

•Closedrapesandshadesonwindowsduringthedaytokeepheatfromthe sun out of your house. (Particularly on windows with an eastern and westernexposure).Intheevening,openingdrapesandshadesletsheatescape through the windows.

•Considerusingadehumidifierinsteadofturningontheairconditioning.You will be comfortable at much higher temperatures if you reduce the humidity.

•Useanatticfantogetridoftheheatbuild-upinyourattic.Heatfromyour attic eventually finds its way into your home.

• Ifyourheatingandcoolingsystemismorethan10yearsold,considerchanging out your current system with a new energy-efficient heat pump. Today’s high-efficiency heat pumps can save 30% to 60% over youroldexistingheatingandcoolingcosts.
