Many of us have heard of the Examination of Conscience that we do in preparation for Confession. Often, we ask a series of questions based on the Ten Commandments to know ourselves and our sins better. Another prayer, called the Daily Examen, comes from Saint Ignatius of Loyola, is another technique for becoming aware of God’s presence and work in our lives. Sometimes we do not respond to that work (sin) and

other times we are overwhelmed with gratitude for His gifts.

The Examen is a prayer that I have committed to pray fifteen minutes a day for the last five years. It is a huge help to me as I seek to live my life in relationship with God.

1. Become aware of God’s presence. Look back on the events of the day in the company of the Holy Spirit. The day may seem confusing to you—a blur, a jumble, a muddle. Ask God to bring clarity and understanding.

2. Review the day with gratitude. Gratitude is the foundation of our relationship with God. Walk through your day in the presence of God and note its joys and delights. Focus on the day’s gifts. Look at the work you did, the people you interacted with. What did you receive from these people? What did you give them? Pay attention to small things—the food you ate, the sights you saw, and other seemingly small pleasures. God is in the details.

3. Pay attention to your emotions. One of St. Ignatius’s great insights was that we detect the presence of the Spirit of God in the movements of our emotions. Reflect on the feelings you experienced during the day. Boredom? Elation? Resentment? Compassion? Anger? Confidence? What is God saying through these feelings? God will most likely show you some ways that you fell short. Make note of these sins and faults. But look deeply for other implications. Are you concerned about a friend? Perhaps you should reach out to her in some way.

4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it. Ask the Holy Spirit to direct you to something during the day that God thinks is particularly important. It may involve a feeling—positive or negative. It may be a significant encounter with another person or a vivid moment of pleasure or peace. Or it may be something that seems rather insignificant. Look at it. Pray about it. Allow the prayer to arise spontaneously from your heart—whether intercession, praise, repentance, or gratitude.

5. Look toward tomorrow. Ask God to give you light for tomorrow’s challenges. Pay attention to the feelings that surface as you survey what’s coming up. Are you doubtful? Cheerful? Apprehensive? Full of delighted anticipation? Allow these feelings to turn into prayer. Seek God’s guidance. Ask Him for help and understanding. Pray for hope.

St. Ignatius encouraged people to talk to Jesus like a friend. End the Daily Examen with a conversation with Jesus. Ask forgiveness for your sins. Ask for his protection and help. Ask for his wisdom about the questions you have and the problems you face. Do all this in the spirit of gratitude. Your life is a gift, and it is adorned with gifts from God. Amen. http://www.ignatianspirituality.com

40 Days For Life

The Spring 40 Days for Life campaign is in full swing. Prayer, fasting, and community outreach are the three components of this peaceful attempt to bring an end to abortion. Do you have an hour to go out and pray in front of the Chandler Planned Parenthood? Can you fast for a day, or maybe just an hour, for the unborn? Can you say a rosary for all those who are hurt by abortion? Visit www.40daysforlife.com for more information and to sign up, or contact Doris Ramirez: [email protected]. You may just find that in trying to save a life, you change your own!

Thank you for supporting Christ the King Catholic School at the 12th Annual Dinner and Auction last weekend. The evening was a great success in every way measured - making new friends, seeing old friends, good food,

excitement, and knowing that the money invested keeps our Catholic School strong. We honor the people and hard work of the last 50 years, and toast to the people, work, and success of the next 50!

Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness; opened my eyes, let me see.

Beauty that made this heart adore You, hope of a life spent with You.

So here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, here I am to say that You’re my God. You’re altogether lovely, altogether worthy, altogether wonderful to me.

King of all days, oh so highly exalted, glorious in heaven above.

Humbly You came to the Earth You created, all for love’s sake, became poor.

And I’ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross. (repeat)

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I be-

lieve in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all

things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered

death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds

from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of

sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

You spoke my name, and took my hand, and called me friend. Such faithful love, so undeserved, a heart transformed. Though I wandered and have strayed, still your mercy reigns. You were broken for me, arms wide open on a tree. You stand knocking at the door, off’ring all I’m hoping for. To those in dark the Lord cries out, “Come and be saved.” Along the way we shall find rest, the Lord is good. For God comforts well his own, we are his alone. You are mine, I am yours, Lord. Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee, and thou with me, Lord. Thou my heart's great love, and I am thine own, Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight. Be thou my dignity, Thou my delight. Thou my soul's

shelter, and thou my high tow'r, O raise thou me heavenward, O pow'r of my pow'r.

Riches I need not, nor vain empty praise. Thou my inheritance, now and always. Thou and thou only, the first in my heart. High king of heaven, my treasure thou art.

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart. Naught is all else to me, save that thou art.
