OFFSHORE WIND ENERGYFrom Site Investigation to Engineering Design.

l Wide spread range of professional engineering and technical competencies. l Highly skilled teams of top performers. l Experienced senior project management teams throughout the process.l Consultancy throughout the project. l Proactive and agile communication and information sharing between the various phases of a project. l Active client dialogue. l High-end offshore equipment. l State-of-the-art laboratory and engineering design.

by Jens Brink ClausenDepartment Director Marine Survey, Geo

Throughout the years, Geo has developed a unique work process whereby we assist our offshore wind clients from the initial Scope of Work through to the final engineering design of any offshore foundation.

Geo’s suite of solutions ensures a full integration of data, analysis, tests, reports and consultancy between our engineering teams: Geophysical surveys, geotechnical site investigation, laboratory testing and engineering design.

OUR VALUE PROPOSITION

Geo has carried out site investigations for more than 50 offshore windfarms.

ALL ABOUT THAT COST AND RISK

Today’s cost and risk focus in the offshore wind industry is both needed and important. Throughout Europe, many companies continuously strive to optimise all processes within the offshore wind market.

We firmly believe that the industry is moving in the right direction. A solid political framework across Europe is necessary to ensure continued healthy investments as well as development of projects.

We want to do better yet. We want to minimise risks and lower the costs in order for the wind industry to deliver truly sustainable energy to the market place and its end-users.

Cost and risk is not just limited to what we deliver, but it is also an insight of how to integrate the workflow and shared knowledge to benefit an entire windfarm project.

Geo has worked with geotechnical surveys, site investigations, laboratory testing and design optimisation for a lifetime. We have invented several new methods and ways to undertake the complexity of gathering the accurate amount of information in order to deliver solid knowledge and consultancy to our customers. Cutting costs must not transform into cutting profits, which would drain the entire industry. Instead, it is a fundamental question of how we make the many work processes come together as an integrated flow of knowledge.

This is one of Geo’s many core competencies, both as a full-service provider and as a strong partner among many players.

The industry predicts that approximately 20% of the costs of a wind farm is dedicated to the initial geotechnical phase. Keeping cost and risk in focus, a good head start begins with a well-prepared Scope of Work (SOW).

The sooner we are involved in this initial phase, the better we can determine the amount of data, analysis and tests needed in order to create a cost effective engineering design.

As engineers, technicians and geologists in Geo we would like to believe that all our work is pure science. To some extend this is true, as we apply numerical modelling, advanced mathematics and laboratory testing in our products and services. However, no data is worth much unless we are able to apply a professional judgement. The ability to transform complex data, analysis, tests and reports into meaningful knowledge is key to any cost effective work process.

A GOOD HEAD START IS HALF THE BATTLE

Innovation is not always about creating new costly inventions. More so, it is to use old plus existing methods and applying experience to them, in order to create new and better ways of use.

Psst..!

During the past 5 years, Geo’s laboratory has expanded its capabilities by 300%. This is due to a consistent increase in market demand for sophisticated and complex laboratory solutions that provides customers with detailed results as well as the necessary consultancy to accompany the test results.

Our state-of-the-art laboratory is an integrated part of Geo’s value proposition; however, it also operates independently to serve clients worldwide, especially in the SOW phase, when clients try to determine what tests they need.

As a market leader, we work closely with several international universities and research institutes:

l The University of Stavanger, Norway.l IsamGeo, Wiesbaden, Germany: Numerical modelling.l Deltares, Netherlands: Cyclic testing.l The Technical University of Denmark.l Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland.l NGI, Norway.
